“I was really excited” – Howe shares Tonali and Gordon observations following Toon training

Eddie Howe has been discussing his first impressions of Sandro Tonali in training and an update on Anthony Gordon’s fitness following his return from European glory with England U21s.

On our new £52m midfielder, the boss reveals that he trained well last Friday, came through fitness tests impressively and has “fit in really well”, adding that he’s already seen a “big difference” in the Italian’s English since they first met.

The boss added that he was “really excited” to see the group that trained over the weekend, reminding him of what a strong group of players we had following the return of Isak, Wilson, Joelinton, Bruno, Tonali, Gordon, Botman and Schar.

On Gordon, Howe’s hailed his performances in recent fitness tests – suggesting he’s come back stronger after vowing to get fitter – and is “expecting big things” from the £40m winger this coming season. Here’s what he’s had to say on both, starting with Tonali.

Eddie Howe on Sandro Tonali:

“He trained on Friday, he did a fitness test and did well, on Saturday he trained properly and did well,” said Howe.

“I was really excited with the group we had on Saturday morning. It was very strong. We have a lot of good players to come back.

“He’ll fit in really well to how we play. The early signs are very positive. He’s a great lad as well so he’s fit in really well so far. I can’t wait to see him in a Newcastle shirt.

“His English is improving as well. In the brief time I’ve met him I’ve seen a big difference.”

Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon:

“I’m looking forward to working with Anthony,”.

“He did very well in the fitness tests as you’d expect because he hasn’t really had a break. He’s trained very well.

“I’m expecting big things for him this year and was really pleased with what he delivered for England. Amazing memories for him.”
