Premier League announce two rule changes ahead of 2023/24 after Newcastle complaints

The Premier League have announced that they will introduce World Cup-style amounts of injury time to prevent time-wasting, also declaring that only one person will be allowed in the technical area.

This comes after a season where Newcastle received a host of time-wasting complaints, with Erik ten Hag criticising how little the ball is in play during out games. In addition, Jason Tindall also a prominent figure on the touch line alongside Eddie Howe.

The duo were often in deep discussion in the technical area, but from the 2023/24 season this will now be banned, with any aggressive behaviour towards either sides’ staff members resulting in an automatic red card.

The Premier League have also released a statistic that shows that the ball was only in play for 55 minutes on average last season, and will now adopt a similar injury time style that we saw used in the World Cup.

While this will likely result in much longer games – extending it by 30 minutes at times – the aim is to eventually stamp out any time wasting in the long run.

Although this has been an issue in the game for many years, of course a ‘solution’ is only presented when Newcastle start to use these tactics to our advantage.

  1. Feels like the author is offended that the PL have introduced the measures.
No one can deny Newcastle honed these tactics and while not alone they were very effective and often really fucking funny.

I’m not sure what the issue is if they’re applied consistently and I’m sure Howe / tindall will be smart enough to find other ways to eke out small margins

  2. Moronic. Just stop the watch when it’s out of play like rugby. Then time wasting doesn’t exist.

  4. Another “everybody hates us” article from Reynolds.
Do you really think these rules were brought in just for us?

The Jason Tindall comment tagged on the end of the paragraph like a little orphan was interesting. I had to go find a real article to figure out what he was talking about.

It’s all very well adding time on for time considered “wasted”, but we are much more sophisticated than that in out time “wasting” tactics.
Nick Pope taking to the ground with various “pulls” isn’t time wasting. It’s a tactical time out that allows Eddie to chat to the players, more an opportunity for restructuring.
And when outfield players go down against more “high-energy” teams, it’s not a ploy to make the game shorter, it’s a ploy to dictate the pace of the game, knocking the opposition off their stride.

The new rules don’t prevent that.
