Alan Shearer names Newcastle star in Premier League Team of the Week despite Liverpool loss

Alan Shearer has selected Anthony Gordon in his Premier League Team of the Week despite our disappointing defeat to Liverpool, saying “he had Trent Alexander-Arnold on toast in the first half.”

The former Everton man was sensational before he was substituted in the 65th minute, scoring the opener and causing havoc all afternoon with his pace, direct running and energy down the left.

He ran rings around Alexander-Arnold, who should’ve been sent off in the opening 10 minutes after taking out Gordon to stop a dangerous counter attack.

Many feel Howe got it wrong in taking off Gordon, but it was great to see the 22-year-old looking razor sharp, fit and scoring his first league goal at St James’ Park, adding to that assist in our opening day win over Aston Villa.

Here’s Shearer’s TOTW in full, featuring former Toon target James Maddison, recently linked centre-back Joachim Andersen, alongside Liverpool duo Darwin Nunez and Jurgen Klopp:
