St James’ Park has been confirmed as being one of the 10 stadiums selected to play host to EURO 2028 as the competition comes to the U.K. and Ireland.
There have been six selected from England – Wembley, St James’ Park, Villa Park, Goodison Park, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the Etihad – with one from Wales (Cardiff’s Principality Stadium), Scotland (Hampden Park), Northern Ireland (Casement Park) and the Republic of Ireland (Aviva Stadium) also featuring.
The last time we hosted the European Championships was 1996, where St James’ Park was selected to host three games featuring France, Romania and Bulgaria.
After a return to Champions League football for two decades just last week, it seems fitting that the news that we will be hosts to international football should follow soon after.
Though there have already been big renovations since the takeover, the stadium is expected to undergo massive changes prior to the tournament, with plans to expand to up to 65,000 seats.
