Worrying update from Italy on Sandro Tonali ban – Set to be even longer than initially reported?

According to Fabiana Della Valle, Sandro Tonali has likely played his final game for Newcastle before a suspension of around 18 months is handed to the midfielder for illegal betting.

The Italian journalist also claims that Tonali will not receive a salary during the suspension and may be banned from training with the first-team, with a fine also coming his way.

It was initially suggested that a plea bargain could lead to a 12 month ban, but Della Valle – the first journalist to report on his betting confession last week – believes it’s likely to be longer.

Tonali came off the bench as we battered Crystal Palace 4-0 on Saturday, with the game ending in a heartwarming round of applause and show of support from Newcastle fans as he led our lap of the pitch.

Though it may be disappointing to lose such an high-profile and expensive signing, it’s clear that everyone involved at the club are fully supportive of the 23-year-old.

Because he was betting on his own team’s games, the former AC Milan man will likely be given a ban of over one year, meaning we may have to wait until 2025 to see him in black and white again.

  1. Juventus’s Fagioli banned for 7 months, Villa’s Zaniolo to be aquitted and “let off” and Toons Tonali to be banned for 18+ months. Gerraway…. Inconsistency at its finest if that happens

    Christ man.

Zonfioli has stated he didn’t bet on football matches (never mind featuring him playing), so if true doesn’t deserve a ban. Fagioli worked with the Italian authorities from the offset, and again I don’t believe bet on how own team. Tonali originally denied any wrong doing before admitting. I love the player, but he’s been so stupid for both himself and nufc.

  3. Can’t see how “they” (who are “they” anyway? The Italian FA? UEFA? FIFA?) can do that. Surely NUFC can pay who they want – ex gratia payments at the least.
Can’t see how “they” can ban him from a third party’s training ground either.
