Former referee Dermot Gallagher believes VAR made a mistake not overturning the penalty we were awarded in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Wolves, insisting he “can’t see a foul” on Fabian Schar after watching replays.
At first glance and in real-time, it did look like Hwang Hee-Chan had caught the defender when trying to clear the ball, but the foul looked a lot more contentious when slowed down and replayed.
However, VAR did not believe that Anthony Taylor had made a clear and obvious error, suggesting there was contact, and did not overturn the decision before Callum Wilson scored from the spot to make it 2-1.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Gallagher said he “can understand why the referee gave it” but that “you only need to see one replay to know it wasn’t a foul”. Wolves boss Gary O’Neil was fuming after the match, describing it as a “terrible decision” and “never every a penalty.”
Watch what Gallagher had to say on the matter below:
🗣️ “Not a penalty for me, you only had to look at one replay and you knew it wasn’t a foul. The fact it was looked at so many times, I just can’t see a foul.”

After we’ve had some dodgy decisions go against us in the past at Molineux, it’s a relief to see one go in our favour, but you can understand why Wolves fans would be so upset.
