Journalist claims Newcastle have shortlisted two Ligue 1 stars ahead of January window

According to Ligue 1 journalist Ignazio Genuardi, Lyon’s Rayan Cherki and Nice’s Khephren Thuram are ‘on Newcastle’s shortlist’ heading into the January transfer window.

Italian outlet  Tutto Juve had previously reported that Newcastle, alongside Juventus, were interested in signing the 20-year-old, who is looking to leave his boyhood club following their turbulent start to the season.

Lyon currently sit bottom of Ligue 1 without a win all season. It’s understood that manager Fabio Grosso was planning on leaving Cherki out of the squad for their clash against Marseille, which was postponed due to fan violence before Sunday night’s game. As a result, it’s believed he’s considering an escape route from the Ligue 1 giants.

The versatile attacker was involved in 11 goals last season – five goals and six assists – and can play down either flank or as a number 10 or false nine.

As for Thuram, Genuardi states that we’re planning to sign a holding midfielder in the new year and remain interest in the Nice star after considering a bid for the 6ft 4′ Frenchman over the summer.

Thuram plays alongside Cherki with France’s U21s and has been tipped to seal a move to the Premier League, with Liverpool heavily linked with the 22-year-old over the summer.
