Newcastle set for England complication as Southgate plans Anthony Gordon call-up

According to Mark Douglas at iNews, Gareth Southgate looks set to hand Anthony Gordon his first call-up to the England squad.

It’s his understanding that Southgate is ‘likely’ to select the winger following his impressive displays in a black and white this season, with the Three Lions boss spotted at St James’ Park for our 1-0 win over Arsenal; where Gordon scored the winner in another superb display.

However, it’s believed his selection would add further complication to Newcastle’s ongoing injury issues, as Gordon was deemed too fatigued to start our midweek defeat in Dortmund and could be forced to play up front at Bournemouth this weekend if Callum Wilson misses out with a tight hamstring.

Alexander Isak is also sidelined with a groin problem, while injuries and suspension meant we had just 13 outfield senior players available for the trip to Germany. Many of those will be away on international duty next week, so Howe’s options in training will be severely limited should Gordon link up with England.

That being said, it would be brilliant news for Gordon and one that vindicates his decision to join Newcastle, who told the 22-year-old he could achieve his England ambitions on Tyneside after sealing a £40m move from Everton.
Elsewhere, it remains to be seen if Nick Pope or Sean Longstaff will be selected. Kieran Trippier is expected to make the squad once again, but Callum Wilson may be left out if club and country have concerns over his hamstring.

  1. If called up Gordon should decline.
You just know that he’ll tear a ligament in training or break a leg getting onto the England bus.
