Eddie Howe’s Mags have generally done brilliantly to cope with the number of injuries in recent weeks, especially when you consider how many games we’ve had to play. However, it’s fair to say our away form is becoming a concern.
After last night’s 3-0 defeat at Everton, we looked at Premier League tables based on our form home and away this season. The difference was huge. At St James’ Park, we are showing title-challenging form, yet we’d be fighting relegation based on results on the road. See both tables below, starting with our away form.
Away form
P7: W1, D2, L4 – 5 points
- Man City 1-0 Newcastle
- Brighton 3-1 Newcastle
- Sheffield Utd 0-8 Newcastle
- West Ham 2-2 Newcastle
- Wolves 2-2 Newcastle
- Bournemouth 2-0 Newcastle
- Everton 3-0 Newcastle
Home form
P8: W7, D0, L1 – 21 points
- Newcastle 5-1 Aston Villa
- Newcastle 1-2 Liverpool
- Newcastle 1-0 Brentford
- Newcastle 2-0 Burnley
- Newcastle 4-0 Crystal Palace
- Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
- Newcastle 4-1 Chelsea
- Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd
Only Burnley, Luton, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United have picked up less points (4) than the five we’ve collected in our seven away games so far this season.
Again, fatigue and injuries have left us fighting an uphill battle at times, but that can’t be the sole excuse for our poor results – and several below par performances – on the road. With Spurs away to come on Sunday, let’s hope we can show signs of improvement soon.
Speaking after last night’s defeat at Goodison Park, here’s what Howe had to say on our concerning away form:
“That’s a concern for us. Our away form has not been what we want it to be or what it was last season.
“I’m struggling to find a reason for that because our home form has been so good. We’ve been dominant and we’ve performed so well. “But we haven’t replicated that away so it is something for us to look at and reflect.”
