Sven Botman has been speaking to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie ahead of tonight’s trip to Anfield, featuring some pretty alarming comments on his recent knee injury.
The Dutchman has revealed that he suffered ‘big damage’ in his knee in our 1-0 win over Brentford but played the next two games – a 0-0 draw at AC Milan and 8-0 win over Sheffield United – as no one had picked up the injury at the time.
He admits the issue then ‘blew up’ the day after our big victory at Bramall Lane, with some specialists claiming he’d played through a ‘total rupture’ in his knee.
This explains why he went on to miss the next three months, but it’s a real concern that our medical team missed this, as he admits in the Sky interview that surgery (which was likely if he didn’t rest) would’ve kept him out for NINE months.
Here’s what the 23-year-old told Keith Downie about his injury lay-off:
“I did my knee against Brentford but then played two games after that (without realising). It blew up the day after Sheff United game & the scan showed some big damage in my knee…
“Some people (specialists) said it was a total rupture, others said that it wasn’t. So I’ve done everything to rest and avoid surgery. The operation would’ve kept me out for 9 months but I’m back & feeling like my old self again — so it seems like I made the right choice.”
