Howe calls out two VAR errors live on Sky Sports after Liverpool 4-2 Newcastle – Video

Speaking after last night’s 4-2 defeat at Anfield, Eddie Howe spoke to Sky Sports about the series of penalty incidents that went against us against Liverpool.

He accepts we didn’t defend well enough – particularly for their final two goals – but bemoaned decisions to reward Diogo Jota’s dive and deny Sean Longstaff a penalty after he was tripped by Endo just after he took the ball down on his chest.

The boss was baffled by Jota’s decision to go down ‘two steps’ after the alleged contact from Dubravka and felt their first penalty, which was missed by Mo Salah, was very soft after ‘minimal contact’ from Sven Botman on Luis Diaz.

Howe believes we must create our own luck and seemed to accept that we didn’t deserve anything in a game Liverpool dominated. However, the nature of their fourth goal was hard to take an an utter shambles after blatant simulation. Here’s what he had to say after the game:

  1. I don’t think we were wretched at all.
There are some games where we manage to grind out a win, despite the opposition (usually the big boys) having dozens of shots. We’ve won games with just one shot on target.
Yes it was disappointing but I’m guessing Gordon, and maybe a couple of others aren’t fully fit and the results will improve. Gordon’s well off the mark speedwise.
What I do want to say though is, I never understood why we brought in Pope when Dubravka was constantly top of the “Saves Made” stats. Worthless stat I know but he didn’t deserve to get dumped like that and I hope his performance last night will stop those unthinking fans claiming Pope is better than Dubravka.
Dubs has played 7 games and hasn’t made a single blatant ****-up, unlike the half dozen or so that Pope made this season before taking a break.
Fans claim we’ve let in too many goals with him between the sticks but when they’re rolling them across the goal 4 yards out for tap ins, maybe the blame should be placed elsewhere.
And FFS let’s remember who we are playing!
