Alan Shearer has been speaking about Saturday’s 3-0 win over Sunderland, our rivalry with the Mackems and the Black Cats’ laughable decision to decorate the away bar with black and white signs.
Speaking to Gary Lineker and Micah Richards on the Rest Is Football podcast, he shocked a few by revealing his wish to see Sunderland back in the Premier League, believing it would be great to have them back to ensure two Tyne and Wear derbies each season. Some will agree, but I didn’t expect to hear Shearer say that!
He described our 3-0 ‘battering’ as ‘men against boys’ after Sunderland ‘rolled out the red carpet’ for Eddie Howe’s Mags and the 6,000 away fans, laughing at their owners for placing Newcastle signage all over the away bar and the apology statement that followed.
Here’s what he had to say when asked about the derby, followed by a clip of him mocking Sunderland’s pre-match own goal:
“We don’t like each other and it’s pretty nasty but they are great games to play in.
“I mean, they might not thank me, but I really hope that Sunderland come up because Newcastle vs Sunderland games haven’t happened for such a long time that you do miss them, because they are great games to play in. It’s very, very nasty.”
Some interesting choices by Sunderland leading up to their @EmiratesFACup tie 😅 pic.twitter.com/0tnpFD6C75
