Richard Keys is at it again. He’s rarely got anything good to say about Newcastle United and he’s now commented on our 3-0 win over Sunderland.
The disgraced former Sky Sports presenter has slated the club for our post-match celebration photo at the Stadium of Light, claiming it was “embarrassing” and “crass.”
Ignoring the fact we do it after every win – albeit in the dressing room – Keys felt we wound up the home crowd and made ourselves look “daft.” A soft perspective to take when it was the perfect opportunity to capture an iconic picture in front of 6,000 Mags who filled out the entire away end.
We hadn’t played Sunderland in almost eight years and had just battered them in their own back yard after a long wait for a derby win. He says we ‘inflamed the home crowd’, but most of them had left by the time we took the photo!
Here’s what Keys had to say on his personal blog, where he makes a fair point on the lack of VAR before throwing his toys out of the pram on our post-match celebrations:
“I agree with those of you who believe that games are better without it [VAR]. The derby at Sunderland was a barn-stormer, a proper football match, all the better for not having it.
“It ebbed and flowed – there were tackles that had people out of their seats, scraps and no interminable delays when a goal was scored, because someone in the bunker was trying to find a way to disallow what we all pay to see. It was a joy.
“I’m convinced that the lack of VAR is one reason Championship football is so popular now. No VAR – that’s the point – not whether the system is good or bad.
“And come on Newcastle. That picture on the pitch at Sunderland was embarrassing. Save it until you end the trophy drought.
“It was crass – inflaming the home crowd and making yourselves look daft at the same time.”
I see you are back on the old “let’s have a go at Keys” bandwagon again Olly.
No mention of any of the other 20 pundits who all agreed that the team photo was a bit much, over the top, unnecessary, provocative, cheap and crass, nope, Keys is the only one you are interested in.
