According to Mark Douglas at iNews, Newcastle are eyeing summer moves for Bayern Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz and Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher; two players currently beyond our budget this month.
It’s been made fairly clear that there’s not an awful lot spend this month due to ongoing FFP constraints, but there’s expected to be much more movement – in and out – at the end of the season.
Both Gallagher and Wirtz have been linked with Newcastle in previous windows, with Howe thought to be a long-term admirer of the former. As for Wirtz, he’s been 20-year-old German is one of the most exciting young attackers in the Bundesliga, bagging eight goals and 12 assists already this season.
Gallagher splits opinion. He is considered to be the perfect Eddie Howe player by some, as he’s one of the best pressing midfielders in the league and has outperformed the likes of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez at Chelsea this season. However, he wouldn’t come cheap and it’s hard to know where he’d fit once Sandro Tonali returns from suspension.
As we reported last month, Douglas believes the ‘expensive’ Wirtz isn’t an attainable option this month – Leverkusen would also refuse any winter sale now they are top of the table – yet he’s seen as a potentially ‘transformative’ signing.
It’s not particularly exciting news for this window, but it seems they are two players to keep an eye on ahead of a busy summer at St James’ Park.
Newcastle have to sign a striker now, and on terms. Just talk to the Epl. For terms, not cash. Because if they wait to the Summer, they could be battling relegation. Get rid of dead wood also.
