Big claims from Germany on Kieran Trippier and Bayern Munich ‘talks’ – Surely not?

Prominent German outlet BILD have claimed that Bayern Munich have scheduled talks with Newcastle this weekend to discuss a possible loan deal for Kieran Trippier.

As news emerged on Friday about the German giant’s interest in the Toon vice-captain, conflicting reports cast doubt on the seriousness of the intention to sign the right back.

Bayern have already been active in the January window this year signing Spurs’ Eric Dier, but the Bavarians are keen on adding a right back to their squad as well.

Newcastle have gone public about their issues with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules and are offloading players this month to help balance the books. Javier Manquillo is expected to finalise a move to Celta Vigo soon, seeing him reunite with Rafa Benitez.

With FFP and PSR in mind, it seems highly unlikely that Newcastle would sanction a loan deal for Trippier without a future fee in mind. The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder contemplated that any fee above £5m may see Toon chiefs seriously consider an approach for the 33-year-old wing back.

I can understand why a massive offer would be considered for a player turning 34 later this year – who is also entering the final 18 months of his deal. However, suggestions we’d hold talks over a loan deal are slightly mystifying. How does a temporary move for one of our most influential figures stand to benefit us in the short or long-term?

Trippier is reportedly Newcastle’s joint second highest earner, on parity with Alexander Isak, and is currently one assist behind league leaders Mo Salah and Ollie Watkins.

  1. £5m is hardly a drop in ocean for FFP and is one of our main men on and off the field. It doesn’t make any sense, wonder if something else going on that may also explain his plummeting performances?
