Hidden transfer clause made public as ‘insider’ reveals Newcastle agreement

According to The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, a hefty percentage of any fee Newcastle United receives for Miguel Almiron will go back to his former club Atlanta United.

As revealed by their ‘MLS insider’, they agreed on a 20-25% sell-on clause when Miggy completed a £21m move to St James’ Park back in January 2019.

It remains to be seen if Al-Shabab – or any other Saudi side – will strike a deal with Newcastle for the 29-year-old, but it seems a sizeable chunk of any transfer fee will go to the MLS side.

The Guardian report that we’re demanding £30m, while The Mail’s Craig Hope suggested that Al-Shabab’s initial proposal was around the £17m mark. A £30m sale would see Atlanta bank £6 – £7.5m for the Paraguayan (leaving £22.5 – £24m for Newcastle), while a £17m sale may earn them £3.4 – £4.25m and £12.75 – 13.6m for us, hypothetically speaking.

The Chronicle report that Almiron has told Toon chiefs he does not wish to leave this month, as he and his young family are settled on Tyneside. But, whether he does depart this month or in the summer, it’s worth noting that up to a quarter of the transfer fee received will be heading back to his former club; who had current CEO Darren Eales in charge when we negotiated that deal four years ago.

  1. That’s it Olly, you’ve finally gone full tabloid.
    A sizeable chunk?
    A hefty percentage?
    A hidden transfer clause?
A 20 – 25% sell on clause is hardly unreasonable or uncommon.
And it’s not a “hidden” transfer clause. It’s a normal clause that can appear in a players contract. Just because you didn’t know about it, doesn’t mean it is “hidden”.
And by the way – 20% is not a quarter.
Apart from that – spot on as usual!

“20% is not a quarter” – I said up to a quarter and it’s 20-25%. The latter is exactly a quarter.

Anyway, I do find it amusing how much time you spend reading articles you love to slate. Can’t be that bad if you keep coming back 🤣
