Gareth Southgate speaks out as Newcastle announce St James’ Park friendly

Gareth Southgate has been speaking to the press following confirmation that England will play Bosnia and Herzegovina in a St James’ Park friendly on June 3rd.

This will be one of two friendlies for the Three Lions as they make their final preparations before heading to Germany for the Euro 2024 tournament which will kick off on June 14.

After the news broke, Southgate shared how happy he was to be coming up to the North East to play in a stadium that hasn’t hosted an England game since 2005 when the played Azerbaijan.

The 53-year-old head coach claimed that they are ‘really looking forward’ to playing in Newcastle, adding that it will be a ‘special occasion’ to play in such a football-mad city.

“We’re really looking forward to taking the team back to the North East and to a city that is synonymous with football in this country.

“We will follow that with another special occasion at Wembley allowing our fans the opportunity to give us a final send off before we head to Germany for another exciting summer.

“Both opponents in June are sure to provide stiff competition and play an important part in our preparation for the tournament.”

There are a number of Newcastle players who will be hoping that they could have a part to play in this tournament with Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson, Nick Pope, Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento all in with a chance.
