Watch Howe’s response to Dan Ashworth questions as Man Utd rumours intensify

Eddie Howe has been quizzed on the future of Dan Ashworth during this morning’s press conference at the club’s Benton training base.

He insists that, as of now, we haven’t actually had any formal contact from Man Utd, but accepts that all of the noise often means that ‘something is going to happen.’

When asked what’s going on, Howe said: “[What has happened?] Nothing as far as I’m aware. Obviously it’s been in the news a lot and usually with these things that means something is going to happen. But as we speak now, we’ve had no contact [from MUFC].

“It’s an unusual situation. I’m used to speculation around players but this is different. Hopefully there’s a quick solution.

“It’s a difficult one when you’re in that role, you need longevity to actually see the fruits of your labour. People have done it best in the Premier League with a period of stability. It takes a long time to get those processes right. Let’s see what happens.

“Football always moves on very quickly and I say that regarding the manager’s position. Newcastle is a huge football club and will continue to work in a very efficient way. We’ve got some very capable people here, in all departments, so we carry on. There has to be a succession plan. For everyone. There is a strategy from the board above.”

Asked if Ashworth had said he wanted to stay at the club this week, Howe replied: “No.” A telling sign, really.

Howe is right when he mentions a quick resolution. If he’s staying – which now feels unlikely – we need clarity soon, but if he’s off then time is of the essence to find a suitable replacement ahead of a huge summer for the club.

“The biggest compliment I can give to Dan is when you’re in a position of power the natural thing to do is to try and change everything with a big ego,” Howe continued. “He’s let the same structures exist and survive and we’re still working in the way we did during the first window. I can only compliment him on that. Our recruitment has been good and I include the summer window in that. I think those deals will come good for the football club.

“He’s in a position of power and has a lot of intelligence and information so it’s an unusual situation.”
