Gareth Southgate has been speaking to the press after handing Anthony Gordon his first senior call-up for England, explaining why he’s selected the Newcastle winger ahead of a Wembley doubler header against Brazil and Belgium.
He’s praised the winger’s “consistently good performances” and revealed that he was very close to being selected for the last squad in November.
Southgate has also hailed his work-rate, goalscoring – especially against some of the “big teams” – and attitude, with his versatility also appealing after he shone as a false nine with England’s U21s last summer. Watch what he had to say below:

“Consistently good performances. He was very close in November and has continued his form.
“His scoring, his work for the team, is excellent. He competes, which is important. I really like his attitude.
“He’s another one who we watched closely with the U21s, where he did well as a false nine (at the Euros). He has had a very good season and has got goals against some of the big teams as well, which for us is very interesting to see.”
