Well done Charles N'Zogbia!
It's emerged that Yohan Cabaye was advised to join Newcastle by another Toon transfer target - and former Magpie to boot - Charles N'Zogbia.
Cabaye confirmed his long awaited move to the North East yesterday for a fee said to be around the £4.5 million mark after NUFC activated a release clause in his contract that allowed the French international the right to talk to a club if they met the fee. It's a canny ploy that has resulted in Newcastle gaining an international midfielder for around half of his speculated value. More of the same please.
Of course it's easy to say that Alan Pardew and Co have done a good job in this scenario, but they won't have been the only factors at play. Newcastle have the money, and they can pay far higher wages than what players pick up in France, but it doesn't necessarily mean that a player will still opt to join us. Look at Kevin Gameiro for proof of this.
On this occasion we've unintentionally enlisted the help of Charles N'Zogbia to help push the deal over the line. It appears that he has been selling the club to Cabaye which convinced the 25-year-old to switch from the North-East of France to the North-East of England.
“I spoke to Charles N’Zogbia and David Rozehnal before joining Newcastle," said Cabaye in one of his many post-transfer media interviews. "They both said it was a good choice to come to Newcastle. They said I would have a great time, especially with the fans."
He continued: “And those fans appear special. Before signing for Newcastle, I watched some videos on the internet, and particularly the game against Sunderland when Newcastle won 5-1. I could see there was a great atmosphere in the stadium, and I really want to see what it’s like to play at St James’ Park and in the Premier League."
Before concluding: “I’m very excited about playing at St James’ Park, now I hope I can adapt quickly to the Premier League.”
So well done to Charles N'Zogbia and David Rozehnal for putting in a good word for us. I'd like to do the same in return for Rozehnal but I can't because he was pap when he was with us, but Charlie boy is a different matter.
Players talk, obviously, and if we are getting good words said about us then it's only ever going to be a good thing in my opinion. N'Zogbia didn't have to say anything good about us, in fact he could have been very bitter about us as he owes us nothing. He doesn't play for us any more so what would he have to lose? Nothing.
Perhaps it is true that he fancies a return to Tyneside? Who knows? There has been speculation.....
Maybe Cabaye can put a word in with Pardew and we can see a return of the Zog?
