Have we finally sorted a long-standing problem?

Pardew the peace broker?
I’ve read a fair bit this morning about some form of resolution regarding bonuses to players having been sorted at NUFC.

The good thing to come from this is that it was apparently a cause of some unrest in the dressing room last season so now it’s been resolved it will hopefully act as an incentive and not a bone of contention.

Quite what the bonus is will, quite obviously, remain confidential, but to me it’s important that the players have some financial incentive to aim for as they try and push up the league. I’ll have a stab at the bonus being paid for achieving a top ten finish although obviously I’m just speculating. Sounds about right though doesn’t it?

Needless to say that Alan Pardew is delighted and feels that this agreement will help ensure that the club as a whole are pulling in the same direction:

“I made it a big priority of mine to make sure that go over the line,” said Pardew in quotes attributed to The Journal “It is important the board and the players are going to go together. I think at any football club that is what you need. There has to be a respect between one to the other.”

He continued: “Of course, as the manager it is difficult sometimes because you are in the middle. I am employed by Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias, but my loyalties are just as strong to the players, who I represent and care about and want to try and enhance their careers and make them better players and make the team better.”

“It is sometimes a delicate position, but I am pleased it has got over the line. I think it is important – and I don’t think it should be underestimated either.”

“It seems to me this job comes with tough somewhere in the middle. Some of the problems I have inherited that I have gone on about before have not made things easy and I have picked up history that has gone on in contract negotiations.”

“I think it is very, very important we try and build a new understanding of the club going forward together. The bonus sheet going over the line yesterday is quite significant because it did not go over the line last year.”

“It might seem a small thing, but I think it is important the club and players agree there is something in place for a reward for what you do.”

I think the last line just about sums up how I feel. Of course to real people such ourselves, the fact that footballers are paid tens of thousands of pounds a week would be reward enough for what you do, but footballers don’t live in the real world so I guess it’s all kind of relevant. Would you turn down a bonus in your job for achieving a pre-agreed goal? I wouldn’t.

The evidence is there to suggest that the money is there to be paid, but the players must earn it through performances on the pitch. Performance related bonuses are a good incentive for players to get that bit of extra cash and will hopefully drive them on this season.

It won’t be long before we see if it works or not.

  1. Think Pardew is on dodgy ground confirming the suspected conflict between the players and the board, he looks a beaten man in interview these days

      (Quote)

  2. I thought this was particularly interesting and was actually going to write a thread on this subject. It seems unreal to believe that money has been the deciding factor for these footballers to play at the highest level……..oh wait…… 😆

On a serious note though the trouble with this is this sorts one problem out short term but im sure another will rear its ugly head

  3. I think it’ll be, get us relegated you must stay for promotion.
finish 17th a brand new lonsdale vest (pack of 3)
finish 16th 2 pairs of Donnay trainers
any higher.. youre showing too much ambition, youre transfer listed.. 😆

  4. Apparently we are 12 players down from last season, that is a massive reduction in the wage bill and still more to leave, Lovenkrands looks like going to Rangers, Perch will be off shortly as well as Ranger and hopefully they will just release Smith as he is as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

Unfortunately during this cull we have lost some good uns and as much as i have grown to hate Laurel and Hardy, the idea of performance related bonuses will surely be good for the team, we are going to be a leaner and younger squad, i hope the gamble pays off, thankfully we play Stoke away in October instead of the winter as i fear for our players against a more robust side.

I’m actually going to get that on my shirt in a few weeks.

  7. Just heard a snippet of the Pardew presser on Talk Sport and he says we have a bigger squad than last season? Think he needs to start engaging his brain before he opens his big flappy gob.

  9. Robert in the sense the younguns are more experienced and he is willing to throw them in we do. I’d rather see a young cf than kuqi. Gosling is fit. We’ve lost nolan campbell enrique, kuqi. 40% of those were ***** for us and i’d rather we let the younguns have their chance ahead of those players. Routledge wasn’t brilliant either

      (Quote)

  10. Robert- in terms of more quality players that’s possible. In addition to Ba, Cabeye, Abeid, Obertan and Marvaeux, Ben Ata Gosling and Vuckic are now available to him.

  11. MDS, you are right about that, my point is he is saying ” Bigger ” and again he is not telling the truth, spin and bullshit.
He needs to be careful as he is turning into a young Kinnear.

  12. We probably have a better squad in terms of quality (although this is yet to be proven) but in terms of size I think it’s smaller.

No good having 11 good players if you’re going to be playing 45 games a year. What is in the under belly is just as important and there we are relyoing alot on young players.

      (Quote)

  13. 20/21. Your points are well taken. But are the numbers really lower? Isn’t it really Enrique, Kuqi, Rout, Campbell, Nolan out (tho Camp/Kuqi never really played and rout was on loan), and 5 in plus the 3 coming back from injury?

  14. @Stuart79

Agree m8 We probably have a better squad in terms of quality (although this is yet to be proven) but in terms of size I think it’s smaller.

couple more players we’ll be ok, although the timing aint great. I thought preseason was to let players play with each other..hmm never mind..

Ive got big hopes for Harris Vuckic this season..

  18. NEWCASTLE United target Erik Pieters has told PSV Eindhoven he wants to quit the Dutch side following a bid from the Magpies – according to reports in Holland this morning.

The left-back has been primed as Jose Enrique’s replacement following the Spaniard’s departure to Liverpool.

However, talk in Holland this morning suggest that PSV’s technical director has asked for more time to consider Newcastle’s bid.

Pieters was dropped from PSV’s last game but made a second half appearance in front of Toon chief scout Graham Carr against AZ Alkmaar, which Sir Bobby Robson’s old side lost 3-1.

After the game Pieters stormed out of the dressing room and told local reporters he was “seriously considering” quitting the club and it is understood that has been followed up with a request to leave before the transfer window shuts.

  20. I think we should just forget Ben Arfa this season. He is laid off a couple of months, then when he gets back he will need to build fitness up when everyone around him will be firing on all cylinders. Add to that building up his confidence. I have no doubt this latest injury will have dealt him a serious mental blow.
This means he may well find himself shirking at challenges and not letting himself run with the same swaggerand pace for fear of further injury.
I very much doubt we will see the same Ben Arfa as at the start of last season until well into next season if at all. Great shame.
Ifhe does come back sharp, fit and confident then it will be a bonus, but until then it’s good to think of our club achieving without his assistance, otherwise we may be in for a fall.

    @Toonsy
I don’t think Bobby quite got over you stealing his sweetheart at a tender age but Bobby had a kind heart and expressed his forgiveness before he died.

  27. Anybody else concerned about the report that Pieters is throwing a hissy fit at PSV? Aren’t the Dutch famously argumentative, especially re: football? Does this bode well for the dressing room?

Ah, eff it. We need a LB and quick.

    Pards said..

Meanwhile, Alan Pardew has admitted reshaping his squad has been tough this summer.

He said: “If you are not one of the top clubs it is difficult to secure the players you want.

“Clubs at the top level make it difficult to adhere to the financial structure you want to adhere to. (which means can i pay in buttons and peanuts)

“We think we have signed well in the summer.

“I look forward to seeing that group.

“But I think our fans will see new players on the pitch on Saturday that will impress. It is not complete, but by August 31 it will be.”

  31. Enrique’s move to Liverpool has turned out to be a big bow for Pardew and has resulted him going into defensive mode, blaming his successors, the big clubs (if you want to compete with “the big” clubs, then you have to do the business as they do, not have a proper financial structure, postpone the underground soil heating or agent fees or you need to be Arsene Wenger)…..

I have a bad feeling that MA and DL are planning to go ahead with Shane Ferguson/Tamas Kadar as LB at least till January; didnt Neil Taylor put in a transfer request, had an argument with his manager and was willing to sue the club?
Though I would be very happy if I proven wrong….

Newcastle target Erik Pieters has played down reports that he is on the brink of joining the Premier League side.
Alan Pardew is in the market for a left-back following the sale of Jose Enrique to Liverpool, and the PSV Eindhoven man is believed to be on his radar.
But after withdrawing from the Dutch national squad due to the death of his grandmother, Pieters has told Dutch newspaper AD Sportwereld that nothing is happening yet.
He said: “I am not focused on football right now, only my family counts.
“Moreover, there must first be serious discussions with Newcastle and PSV must be willing to let me go.”

  35. He mentions us by name there, Pieters does. So no doubt we’re in for him. He won’t come cheap, methinks. There was an article yesterday saying PSV won’t let him go for under 8-10m euros, which, I think is around 9m pounds, right?

Frustrating as hell that there’s not already a 2nd LB at the club though. People on here have been saying that Enrique’s gone for months. Why couldn’t the club sort out backup before he actually walked? Annoying.

      (Quote)

  36. Yeah, things like that do take a lot of time to sort out.

FSOTC- I think the problem is I think the club were hopeful of him signing a new contract but he refused straightaway and also I thought swansea dealt with us very harshly, taylor wanted to leave the club but in the end they managed to win him back on side. That may have been his replacement which they couldn’t get

      (Quote)

  37. BBM – Nice words but totally hollow. Ashley will do what he wants as he has shown previously and Pardrew has no say and is just left to look like a ***.

    agreed m8,

but perhaps the Toon chiefs could of asked the questions a while ago regarding the possible transfer of Pieters. I think we knew Jose was off. & yes, the Naylor deal was nearly there but Pards did say we would buy ‘another’ if Enrique left and we signed Taylor. so we’ve had plenty of time to sniff around at possible players..

Anyone else find S Taylor annoying these days? He is always there for a quote about “pulling together” or ” great spirit”. He needs to concentrate on doing the right things when a ball is played over him, and stop having to throw hilsefl around due to being out of position. Stop being Mr Newcastle in the press and get your head down

  41. I think Pards might read this blog. And that last thread was not good reading from his point of view. These latest quotes suggest he’s less than impressed with fans’ reaction to his efforts in the window so far.

Hate to say it (actually no I don’t – it would be boring if we all agreed) but I agree with him.

This copied from my post on the last thread:

All I’m saying is: the ink on the Jose deal isn’t even dry, but you think the club should have committed to another £12-20m and just hope it didn’t fall through.
We should judge when the window’s shut, not now. It’s not as if anyone on here actually knows the first thing about how player deals get done. Ranting because he didn’t have some synchronised signing arranged just sounds like a load of toddlers spitting dummes because they “want it now, now, now!”
It’s not like they’ve done a bad job in the window so far, is it? Given the constraints imposed by Ashley’s business model I think it’s been brilliant. We said they needed to get out of the blocks quickly, and they did. AP said things would then go quiet until the last month and they did. He said things would then pick up, and they did. And there are two weeks left, so sit tight and shurrup about the end of the world being nigh until the 1st of September.
Besides: anyone want to give me an example of a club managing to pull off the miraculous stunt of signing a replacement BEFORE completing the sale of the incumbent? Do you see anyone arriving at Arsenal since their two best players fekked off? Do you think Wenger is a bit of a ***** manager too?

Pards is right: fan expectations of a new LB walking in as Jose walks out are.. hate to use the word…. deluded.

  42. I havent read the earlier comments I have to say…been busy….but I have known Enrique will levae for weeks, if not months, if I know that, the club do. 47. @Whumpie
Why does it always happen that NUFC, under Ashley, is always left under limbo, we are looking for LB cover for over 3 years, and now we dont even have a 1st choice LB

When James Milner left, we were told that the replacement is ready and the club had sufficient 15 days after Milner had filed a transfer request, and I am expecting Milner would have told his decision to the club a good 3 weeks before….
I am not going to start the Andy Carroll replacement saga

I am pretty sure that, if Enrique wouldnt have gone to Twitter, he would have been sold on the last week of the transfer season and Pardew would have given the same reason, “We didnt have time”….

Pardew is talking abt competing against the “big clubs”, MA and DL cant compete with Swansea for Neil Taylor, who was apparently rated as 1 million….
