Down and out! Brighton 1-0 Newcastle

Buckley does the damage for Brighton
Newcastle were sent tumbling out of the FA Cup by Brighton this evening at the AMEX Stadium.

There can be no excuse for a performance like that. Quite frankly we were awful and the whole team, from manager down to each player, must take a portion of the blame.

I’m honestly trying really hard to think of a player to give some grudging credit to and I’m really struggling. The only candidate I can think of is probably James Perch which says a lot. Too many poor individual performances and a lack of effort and intent done for us in the end. We weren’t good enough to win and that pretty much sums it all up.

Newcastle made just one change from the side that lost resoundingly at Fulham last week, and it was enforced change with Fabricio Coloccini sitting out the match after picking up a groin strain in training. James Perch deputised and didn’t actually do a lot wrong. He was probably our best outfield player, but I’ll be glad when Colo is back against Blackburn hopefully.

I’d like to go into detail regarding the match but the simple fact is that there wasn’t a great deal to talk about. Certainly not in the first-half anyway. The highlight was probably an attempt from Leon Best who cleverly trapped the ball from a Yohan Cabaye pass before firing just past the post.

The second half had a bit more bite to it though as the tackles started to fly in. Yohan Cabaye may well be crossing his fingers and hoping that the FA don’t investigate his wandering foot which ended up in the face of a Brighton defender.

Newcastle had a lot of possession but they just didn’t do a lot with it. There are a number of reasons for this in my view. One being Jonas Gutierrez wandering all over the place and doing not a lot. The same can be said of Hatem Ben Arfa while Shola Ameobi and Leon Best offered virtually nothing up front and at times looked like they had barely even seen other.

The winner came on 76 minutes courtesy of another player who had a stinker – Danny Simpson. Well the goal wasn’t scored by him so I lied, but his weak attempt at trying to dispossess Will Buckley on the halfway line allowed the Brighton man a free run towards goal. Buckley jinked an twisted his way into the penalty area before shooting at goal and seeing his shot fortunately deflected off Mike Williamson over Tim Krul and into the back of the net.

Some have credited it as an own goal against Mike Williamson but I’m not so sure. I’m really to angry to give a toss about it in truth. The nuts of it that it hit the back of the net regardless of who is credited with it.

What followed the goal is what annoyed me the most. The sheer lack of urgency and fight on display from the lads representing NUFC was disrespectful to say the least. At times we were playing at walking pace which is just not cricket when your chasing a game.

Newcastle did have half-hearted appeals for a penalty waved away after a shot from Yohan Cabaye struck the arm of a blocking Brighton defender. I’ve seen them given but my instant reaction was that it would have been a harsh decision. I certainly wouldn’t be happy if it was awarded against Newcastle, and being honest if we’re going to start looking at the penalty and bemoaning it then there is something wrong.

We weren’t good enough. End of!

  1. It would be wrong to simply blame the referee for our defeat, however it was a clear penalty in my opinion. Nevertheless, we were woeful today and didn’t deserve to go through. Hat’s of to Brighton, they didn’t fear us one bit, and after the performance we put in it’s not hard to see why. Good luck to them in the final 16, but we must now turn our attentions elsewhere.

  2. It’s kind of funny how things conspired against us for their goal

Simpson’s weak challenge was because he was the one player in our defence already on a yellow card and didn’t want to get sent off.

William gets himself in a good position, but the ball deflects off of him over Krul, who was midway through shifting his body at the time, and into the back of the net.

It’s luck of the highest order.

    Anyway, onwards and upwards.

  3. Toonsy I think you have covered most of it right there, and you were spot on with ‘We weren’t good enough. End of!’
On the Willo part he has scored twice now and both times have been against us 😳 im sure he hates that stat

  4. Not a good performance at all, the only player that I can say had a good game was Santon. Cabaye was uncalled for with what he done kicking that guy in the face so expect 4 match ban brought up soon with that, the hand ball decision pissed me off even more considering 2 penalties were given against Fulham that weren’t supposed to be penalties in my opinion and when we get the dogs whip its threw straight back into our faces. I am glad I did not go to this game as I would have been on the pitch ready to knock that referee out, oh well that puts Ashleys “Road to Wembley” campaign out the window lets see if we snuff the premier league now.

  5. Probert is Trelford Mills love child i am sure of it . There can be no other reason for him not giving that penalty , god his father must be proud .

  6. I think we need a commanding defender in asap but I just can’t see it happening in the next 3 days.
I will feel alot more confident when we get our 2 Demba’s back and I think the players will feel the same. But we need a top notch CB and not one that has no Prem experience like Mariappa 😡

  7. It’s a bitter pill to swallow but as dire as we were offensive wise, I still couldn’t see Brighton doing anything.
The strange thing is, I said the same against Fulham in the first half last week and I would have bet my house on us not losing.
At half time in this game, even though we passed it about as if practicing and going nowhere, I still couldn’t see any way we could lose it.

I said to my son, “the only way Brighton will score is from a dodgy penalty decision or a fluke goal and low and behold they get one.

What annoyed me most about the whole game was after Brighton scored because it appeared that it was us that were 1…0 up and were just playing it about with no urgency to add another; it was weird.

  8. Big Dave,

Mariappa played in the Premiership with Watford before and he handled Tottenham quite easily on Friday night, the only reason Tottenham won was the Watford keeper having a howler.

Mariappa would be fine by me.

  9. Watched newcastle today and I can confidently say it was the worst I have ever seen ameobi play. Can’t wait for the two demba’s to play. It was the first time in a long time nufc had a real chance of progessing far in the fa cup and there was no effort in today’s performance. If any nufc players are reading this comment then they should buck up there ideas and perform to the high standards that everybody knows they can play at.

  10. Perch probably was man of the match, how fucking mad is that 😕 Disappointed in all the lads, and in Pards for choosing that fucking ridiculous formation.

  11. Oh come on. This was not bad football. BHA was given some room to do some holding in the box and neither Best nor Shola could fight their way out of it. Brighton put a choke hold on Ben Arfa and the Newcastle players did not seem to want to pass to him anyway. (Is something simmering in the locker room?) Too bad Perch played so well. Now there will not be a new defender coming in. And Willo again showed he does have the touch to put the ball in the back of the net. If only he could do it in the opponents goal! Other than that goal, Willo was super. No complaints about Krul, Santon (David just needs to learn when to shoot or cross) Jonas was a demon, Danny G made no mistakes. Simmo was Simmo. Cabaye may need a rest, he is looking a bit edgy. Howay the lads.

  12. BIGDAVE, we could have had the best 2 central defenders in the world at the back today and it wouldn’t have made any difference because in reality we weren’t even troubled much apart from that deflection.

It’s gutting but we have lost an FA cup game which isn’t alien to us is it.
We don’t become a **** team overnight and 6th in the league is no fluke.
I do agree though that we need a strong centre back in for the prem run in though.

  13. the blame has to go to pardew we looked as though we set out for a draw very poor in front of goal no pace or quality in midfield defence not the same without saylor missed colo jonas had a very poor game hba is not a winger and ameobi should never put a toon shirt on again poor substitutions 👿

  14. DAVE there have been some canny c/h come oot of the ccc,the everton and england c/h,dawson at spurs, lescott at city ect ect,not saying the watford lad is that class, but is he worse than what we have on jabba budget???

      (Quote)

  15. i think the way newcastle played today was a disgrace and can’t see how anybody can be defending them. Yes the goal was a fluke, however there was no effort put in by the lads. They should sit down tomorrow and hav a big think about if they want to be successful or just be the best of the rest as we always are 😡

      (Quote)

  16. The more I read Demba’s comments, the more I expect him gone in the summer.

He has no intention of staying with us and it’s clear with how he answers his questions.

He always talks about finishing the season with us and how he has to come back and help us reach our targets this season.

Couple that with Philippe Auclair’s comments about knowing Ba’s advisors very well and knowing all about their “very specific plan” going forward….

Doesn’t bode well. Ah well, We have Cisse now, so as long as we sign a quality replacement we will be fine.

  17. Seriously someone who has to shape things up is Shola! What tha hell is he doing on the field? He barley runs and the only thing he suppose to be good at, in the air, he fails miserbly.. Leon is trying at least

  18. HITMAN, you don;t believe what you just said, I know it’s because your gutted that you said it.
Pardew is a very good manager.

      (Quote)

  19. no way HITMAN you can’t just turn on your manager like liverpool fans on dalglish. on week they say hes a legend the other they say its time for him to go.

      (Quote)

  20. we need a total revamp in the summer. get rid of all the players who are terrible or don’t give a sh#t and get in people who want to play. ive seen more effort from 7 year olds than i did see today 😡

      (Quote)

  21. FJ right enough he was in the prem with Watford but I still don’t think he is the answer.

Wolfie do you still believe we will spend the £25 mill ? and yeah your right even with 2 good CB I don’t think we could have won because we were never going to score wit the 2 strikers we played.

Ice I know what your saying I just don’t think we can afford to buy a player that might struggle to get used to the Prem, and I really don’t see him as being anybetter than Willo ???
I think we need to spend proper and go all out for Samba

      (Quote)

  22. The players should be ashamed of themselves.
    No fight. No spirit.
-Pardew should have changed things far sooner.
All in all, a giant balls up.

    A real disgrace.
I had to squint a few times during the match, to make sure my grandma wasn’t playing !

    Awful
    Enough said.

      (Quote)

  23. A lot of people on here are not giving Brighton the credit that they deserve. They’re a Championship outfit and matched us today, hats of to them. For me, we only lacked in an attacking sense and had Ba and Cisse been playing we would have won with ease. Today wasn’t a case of bad defending and it does not add fuel to the fire in our search for a centre back. We simply need to forget about today and now give a top six finish in the Premiership our full attention. Just look at the players we missed today; Colo, Raylor, Tiote, Ba, Cisse… when these lads are back we will see a different NUFC and hopefully we can get back to winning ways. Howay the lads!

      (Quote)

  24. DS, you do know that we will have stinker games don’t you.
It doesn’t mean the players don’t care, it simply means that things don;t always pan out how we think or even they think or even the manager thinks.

I’m as gutted as the next man with how we played but we don;t have too many so called **** players.
If we got rid of the so called **** players and replaced them with the players everyone thinks we should have, then the league, the FAcup, Carling cup and Champions league are all ours, ours, ours I tell you, oursssssssssssssssssssssss MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA 👿

Seriously though, we are doing fine and had a hiccup , it won’t be the first or last and all teams are going to get knocked out of the cup except 1, the one who wins it and it’s not us that’s gonna win it this season.

The performance was gutting but I can see why they performed like that as I noticed when a few players fell over, I saw that they still had their trunks on from their recent trip away lol

      (Quote)

  25. Wolfie, you are just too positive 😆

You still on the footy mad board under a username mate? 😆

  26. I would argue with anyone who watched that march that James perch wasnit man of the mAtch, head and shoulders above every better player on paper than him, time to stop hating and start appreciating, did a good job in a very poor team performance

      (Quote)

  27. DAVE aye ive said it a lot samba is the kiddie, but jabba wont pay the cash
so its all dreams plus hes 28,over age 😀 😀 😀 we could have five play-makers in the team but with best and shola up front they would be lucky to score 20 between them in a season no wonder cabaye is starting to lose the heed

      (Quote)

  28. I agree James Perch had a solid game which considering the stick he gets, (uncalled for stick really), he still confidently steps into any role Pardew gives him.

      (Quote)

  29. Gary Watson @ 33 yeah they got what they deserved, but to be honest I don’t think they played well and were there for the taking, only we were to toothless to take them 👿

      (Quote)

  30. aye perch had a canny game wont dispute that but come on we were against a team in mid table in there lge lets not go over-board about it,plus the rest were **** so he would stand out imo

      (Quote)

  31. HITMAN, he’s a top manager in my mind and will prove his worth as time goes on.
All managers make mistakes with selections they believe will do a job .

      (Quote)

  32. wolfie hope and pray your right brilliant defender and not bad as a last 10 minute centreforward 😆

      (Quote)

  33. Where was the fight, pride of wearing the Newcastle shirts. The bottom line the team were rubbish. We are once again the joke.

    The manager should sack himself

  34. SPENCER, trust the Wolfman. 😀
Poolie, he will be a great addition and by the way, where in Hartlepool are you from as I’m from Hartlepool. 😀

  35. We all just need to take a look at who was missing today because we all know they would of made a difference , were all pissed off because we are out the cup , to a side from a lower league but we are still 6th in the premiership with a good chance of Europe next season . Lets get the lads from Africa back and Colo fit and all will be well . Also let one of the African lads bring a witch doctor with them to put a spell on Probert the love child of Trelford Mills . It was a fecking penalty .

  37. Kid, it wouldn,t have mattered if simpson had been sent off. When he plays we play with ten men anyway. Actually with amoebi it’s nine men. Pathetic.

  38. Icedog – fair comment, not going to advocate perch for a knighthood or anything but 11 players were given a Newcastle shirt today with specific instructions and while 10 of them made a balls of it, he cruised through rather comfortably if I am honest. He knew what he had to do and did ot effectively, no frills or **** ups, he should hold his head high despite a bad day at the office

      (Quote)

  39. BIGDAVE, I would have Perch as a back up but no I wouldn’t have him as first choice centre back.
I just think he can do a job as he proves as a versatile player.
When Samba arrives, we are sound central defensive wise..

POOLIE, so you’re on Elizabeth way or a street just off them eh.

      (Quote)

  40. BIG DAVE – I agree that they weren’t brilliant either, but they do deserve credit for showing no fear against Premier League opposition. Buckley seemed a decent player today and I wish him and Brighton well.

The Newcastle that played today were merely a wounded animal. The fact remains that when every player is fully fit and available for selection, we actually have a canny little team!
