Pardew blames lack of attack for Brighton cup exit

Pardew laments attacking threat
Alan Pardew has blamed a lack of creativity and goal threat for our rather dismal FA Cup exit last night.

I’m inclined to agree with him. I’ve calmed down a bit now and had some time to reflect, and aside from lacking in the attacking department we weren’t too bad and had control of the rest of the game.

Unfortunately though, if you can’t create chances or put them away then you’ll be in trouble. Brighton scored with their only real effort on target but if you can’t find the back of the net yourself then you are in trouble.Hopefully this situation will be rectified when we get our main strikers from Africa.

“It’s disappointing because we wanted to go through in this competition, of course,” Pardew told the official club site after the game.

“We didn’t threaten the goal enough tonight. We didn’t have enough creativity. We controlled the game today for long, long periods, but didn’t threaten the goal enough. The whole game we had a good grip on, without ever really unlocking them.”

“The goal was disappointing and maybe because Danny got booked he had to pull out of the challenge, and that set them on the break. They then got a bit of luck to get the goal.”

“They defended well to be fair to them, but we should have threatened the goal more with the possession we had.”

Another disappointing weekend, and it all starts up front for me. To me Shola and Best just weren’t good enough yesterday, either individually or as a pairing. Whenever we got forward there was nowhere to go and the move broke down.

The strikers aren’t the only ones who should garner some criticism however. Our wingers were both awful and I’m struggling to recall a time that Hatem Ben Arfa actually did anything of note. Likewise Jonas Gutierrez, who spent most of his time not being where he was supposed to be leaving our left side pretty vacant.

Still we must now bounce back against Blackburn on Wednesday evening. A positive result at Ewood Park will set us up for the home game against Aston Villa a week today, and if we can get four points from that we can still push on at least give qualifying for Europe a real good go.

“We’ve now got a big game on Wednesday night and we need to make sure we get the right response. There’s two big games this week,” Pardew explained.

“Blackburn is not a good place to bounce back and will be a tough game, but we will threaten the goal a little bit more on Wednesday I hope.”

Wellin terms of our attack at least, we certainly can’t be much worse!

  1. Yes, and who is to blame? Mostly his tactics which obviously didn’t work. Best on the wing? And Jonas in the nr 10 role? Which happen to be the only role he saw Ben Arfa in. So he reshapes the team and tactics to make space for a number 10. And then puts Jonas there and Ben Arfa on the wing. Baffled

  2. Before Ba came to our rescue we were left with Championship stikers once AC was sold ( and he`s playing like one now ). Pardew is trying to build a decent squad but this takes time and he can only work with what he`s got. We are fortunate to be where we are and I hope the new stike force will gel to the rigours of the Premiership.
There is still a lot to be done as we look to strengthen the squad and who knows who we will let go as this rebuilding continues.
But better times are certainly happening at last and long may this continue.

  3. Basically sums up the game this article as we all know.
We simply weren’t in any trouble but we had no bite for the reasons mentioned.
Let’s put it on the back burner and concentrate on Wednesdays game.

  4. Toonsy-I think Jonas was supposed to drift and not actually stick on the left, we played 4-3-3 and it seems like Pardew wanted Jonas to wonder and maybe add an extra option to wherever we went forward or plug any defensive gaps. Unfortunately he did neither, or failed at both, and I don’t really blame him for it. As long as Pards takes note and realises that formation with those players doesn’t fcking work then it’ll all be dandy 😛

  5. Pards has got it spot on imo as I said earlier we could still be playing now and I dont think we would score unless from MF, simply because Strolla is ??? well strolla and Best needs 20 chances just to get one on target.
It’s all good people saying what do you want from our 3rd and 4th choice strikers, but before the start of the season they were our 1st and 2nd choice strikers, I don’t think they’re good enough simple as that.
Best has scored in 2 games out of 16 or so 👿
strolla has scored in 1 out of 8 starts.
you can have a cracking side creating lots of chances but if the str4ikers cant score whats the fuking point, and im sure the other players think along those lines.

  6. totally agree with pardew but he should also say his subs at the end were never going to change the game big fook up on his part i thought

    simpson isnt good enough IMO

  7. Sorry–I thought it was Pards’ formation that didn’t work. It was excellent against Fulham in the first half and hasn’t quite worked since then.

Shola and Best didn’t connect because Best’s orders were to play out left. Jonas was nowhere to be found on the left because those were his orders–wander & prod in the middle. Seemed like we played a 4-2-3-1, right?

  8. Pardew has said this as he saw Kenny do it with the Liverpool players afew weeks ago.

However all it has done is **** me off more!!, even could see what was wrong but there was only 1 person who could do anything about it… HIM!!!
If he’s coming out and saying this now, why not do something about it yesterday?!
Ferguson should have been on sooner and Lovern should have been on to try and offer something different upfront, and that should have been done at half time for me like.
Was watching SSN yesterday and Paul Walsh was watching the Huddesfield game, Jordan Rhodes hardly had a kick all game yet the ball falls to him and he scores. That’s the type of player we missed yesterday.
I’m all for good team spirit, but if Pardew didn’t see enough from the players, why wasn’t he on the touchline barking at them or making changes sooner

Newcastle contacted Ajax last night. They are VERY close to agreeing a fee I am told. All parties want this done ASAP.

dan i posted that on last thread 😆

  10. Sorry but I believe in the KK way of thinking the best form of defence is attack, but to do that we need proper strikers that can hit the back of the net.
I know Simmo can be very average but he was still part of the best defence in the prem at the start of the season ❓
I blame not having Colo and Saylor as I think they had a big calming influence on Simmo and Raylor, but Perch and Willo arn’t in the same league, we still badly need a commanding CB but I fear we wont get one.

  11. There is something horribly seedy about the last pic with Pardew in it-just look at Paul Barron’s (our goal keeping guru) face in the background.

They should personally reimbursed every supporter who travelled down to Brighton for that farce.

It might well have been Saylor’s birthday but does that excuse the incredible amount of drink and girls they got through 2 days before the match they were “taking very seriously”?

    Hardly. 🙄

      (Quote)

  12. Pardews 4-2-3-1 formation doesn`t work, the players are like headless chickens. Jonas is lost and Santon is isolated too many times. Best and Shola either too far apart or chase the same ball and space, in other words Totally effin inept setup!
4-4-2 has served us well and by the way Simpson rash challenge and yellow card cost us! He should have made the challenge red card or not!
FKIN steamin, get it sorted 😈

  13. From the article of NUFC players in Tenerife; none of the players (besides an injured STaylor) seems to be drinking. Guti, Colo, Best and Pardew all looks sober. I see this as tabloid’s at it’s best.

  14. hey if pardew was there and hopfully keeping a close eye we would be saying he’s a genius if we won 8.-0

players need time off to although swiging bottles of champas is a touch much i agree… theres a line but i am sure these are the worst pictures available otherwise we’d be seeing them

lets just get that europe spot and yesterday will be forgotten im sure

  16. This Tabloid bullshit designed to cause unrest because beer can be seen e.t.c.
Naturally that will be blamed on why we got beat.
If Pardew had took the players on an army assault course to make them fitter, that would also have been blamed on our performance ,citing that they were burned out.

If they were told to relax at the Priory clinic it would be blamed for screwing with their heads and that’s why we lost.

At the end of the day, we got beat by a fluke goal , away to Brighton and as dire as we were, we controlled the game.

      (Quote)

  17. @19/20/21

    Actually that is fair comment.

Could be all made up bullshit for a change eh?

You have to admit though it doesn’t look too innocent does it and I doubt Taylor drank by himself all night?

I’ll maybe hold my judgement for now.

      (Quote)

  18. Geordie dan-its only tayls drinking as far as I can see, Colo, Jonas, Bestie=no drinks, or Pards either for that matter. Its paper trash talk. Also, wasn’t Barron fired with Hoots? So I highly doubt that’s him i nthe picture…if it is, he’s not a Newcastle employee.

      (Quote)

  19. PUP I agree with you if the other players or Pards was drinking then there will be pics, as for Saylor on the champers well it’s not as if he was doing us any harm as there was no way he would have been playing

      (Quote)

  20. Cannot see anything out of the ordinary in those pictures. Only Saylor seems to be drinking, it’s his birthday, and he is cream crackered anyway. This is probably one of the few chances he has to have a few drinkies on his birthday.

lets not look for excuses we were **** and if we had a different strike force yesterday the game would have ended very much differently

and if the players were a bunch of tw@ts it wouldnt have been kept until sunday to break the news

Don`t see Fergie doin something like this! Amateurish to say the least !

      (Quote)

  25. PUP I have nowt against the lads haveing a few beers and a laugh either as I think it helps them all bond, and tbh I think if they were going for a **** up they would have tried to ditch the manager 1st 😆

I can’t see anyone paying £15 mill for him I would say £8 – 10 would do it and I think he is worth it 😕

  30. Don’t see the harm in a few drinks, even though we lost. If we won it would be a non issue. To me it already is. Its not like they broke any laws 😕

in the interview he also said the club had broke promises to him so it was personal now as far as hes concerned. But he signed a contract last january for about 4 years or could be 5 years so they got him by the short and curls i think.Agree hes a very good player just what we need but 15 mil is just way to much for player his age

  32. Also forget Samba. He’s decent but he is 28 which is too old for the policy. He ain’t exactly quick now and his pace is only going to get worse…

  33. i am not a one to slag pardew off he has done a terrific job but he knew ba was going to the ACON he also knew ameobi is not a goal scorer best has only 4 goals we all knew them two would not score goals he should of brought in a loan striker like robbie keane just to keep things ticking over 🙄

  35. He is a bit of a genius this Alan Pardew working out that it was a lack of creativity and striking fire power that caused us to exit the FA Cup. Next he will be telling us it is Monday tomorrow.

      (Quote)

  36. Toonsy I know what your saying but I think a commanding CB is as important as pace, as for his age 28 I think that is the right age for a CB I don’t really see an issue of a 4 yr contract which takes him to 32 🙄 but then that 12 yrs younger than me 😆

      (Quote)

  37. B Dave @40, these are players who we were told the FA Cup is/was a serious target!! Getting paid £ thousands a week, I expect them to be professional and sort out the lack of tactics and problems that caused us to be humiliated by a much smaller club before we play another smaller club in the cup, not partying at 3.00am in the morning 72 hours before we play our next game, and still we play the same tactically naive set up.
Pardew called this badly wrong, and now the players wives/partners see what they were upto (Pardew has lost their trust too) absolute **** up!! It could end up in the wives pressurising the players to leave cos Pardew condoned it and can1t be trusted!!

  39. Hope Lovenkrands gets a chance against Blackburn ,its too early for Ba and Cisse to be back so i hope a 442 with Best and Lovenkrands upfront . I would consider giving Cabaye a rest as well ,if he is not banned for that so called kick that a lot of people got worked up about . I honestly don’t think it was intentional but maybe that is me looking at it through black and white glasses . If colo is fit then push Perch into a defensive midfield role and HBA in the attacking midfield role with Jonas and Obertan down the wings .The Blackburn game could be a game where Obertan can show everyone that he has a bit of talent and not just speed .

  43. Jan Vertongen has just finished playing against Feyenoord , so he can hardly be on a plane to Newcastle can he . What some tw@ts set on twitter is unbelievable .

  44. B Dave, the pics show them there, drinkin or not and cosying up to girls inc Pardew. Trust and respect gone for the manager from the wives and girlfriends etc Imagine if you got caught and you said to your wife “Love I wasn`t drinking” it makes it effin worse, cos you weren`t pissed you should have known better. Still never mind eh? The manager was there so it`s ok!
The fact is we were woeful yesterday and Pardew has allowed the players and himself to be ridiculed, rightly or wrongly. It should not have happened and let`s hope there are no repercussions before Tues night window closes.
One less trophy target for our top players to aspire to!!

      (Quote)

  45. TAE @ 63 he looks well pissed off.
CT so we have to keep the players wags happy now ❓ if your trust and respect for the manager has gone because you believe this crappy story in the people, well then I don’t think you had much trust in him to start of with.
I just don’t see what the fuss is about, it would have been different if they were partying hard and getting smashed, but if they had of been i’m 100% sure we would have seen them pics instead of the ones with the story ❓ 😕

      (Quote)

  46. I was a real supporter of Pardew until the last two games which he has single handedly thown away.

Brighton were **** scared of us and ready to be put to the sword…Who cares they may have scored a couple…We could have smashed them 5 or 6 if we had attacked them!

Pardew needs to have a bit more faith!

      (Quote)

  47. BillytheFish I agree that Pards has to take some of the blame as he got it wrong, but why let the players get away scot free ?? they were **** and not one can be proud of their display so does Pards have to take the blame for the players looking like they didn’t care less.
I said during the game that Brighton looked very weak and were there for the taking but if we are relying on Strolla and Best to score the goals we’re fuked, and there isn’t really much Pards can do about that, until we get our proper strikers back.

      (Quote)

  48. It will be interesting to see if Pards continues with this experimental formation or chucks it all together. 1st half against Fulham, it looked fantastic. Since then, it hasn’t come together at all. And yesterday’s subs seemed really bizarre.
