Guess Who?

Guess Who?
Most of us, of a certain age and from a pre-Playstation era anyway, will have played a game called “Guess Who?” at some point in our youth.

If you haven’t then I’ll try and explain it to you. Essentially you have a load of pictures of different (made up) people. You then pick a card which will match one of the people and your opponent will have to guess who it is by asking questions about what he/she looks like.

Is he male? No, so then you knock down all the pictures of the male characters as you know it is a female. Does eh have glasses? Yes, so you’d then knock down all of the pictures for those females who do have glasses. It carries on so you have only a few left and then you can guess and, hopefully, you get it right. I lost the cards out of my set so I used to choose one in my mind. Poor soul.

Anyway, youth revisited, I started thinking that that game I used to play all of those years ago is a little bit like how our transfer rumours seem to start. Based on the things we know, like where we’ve been scouting, what we’ve achieved so far in the transfer market, and what we are looking to carry on achieving, it could quite easily be a game of Guess Who!

Is he French/Dutch or does he play in those leagues? Has anyone really heard of him? Does he have something in his history that could put other, perhaps bigger or better, clubs off of him? Is he under a certain age? The answer to most of those would be yes so you’d keep them tiles up.

Are they already well known? Do they have an already established reputation? Are they overvalued? Is he over a certain age? The answer to most of those would probably be no so down those tiles go.

The point I’m making is that most of the stories you can read in the press can be discounted just by looking at the way we have been doing things lately. And the most impressive thing is that a lot of the fans are now also on board with the way we’ve been playing the transfer market game.

It’s unlikely that we’ll see much transfer movement until the European Championships are finished, but I think most fans understand this and realise that it’s not always a bad thing waiting and seeing what happens.

And yes I’ve just used a game to try and get my point across, badly probably, but still….

  1. Surprised the pc equality brigade never got their mitts on guess who there was always like 3 women and a **** load of men, Bit like a michael barrymore pool party… 😯

On topic I agree as ive just read the fail linking us with defoe again for no logical reason, Not in any way shape or form does he fit the profile of a potential united signing but who gives a ***** if it fills an inch or two… 🙄

  2. CC…PC brigade couldn’t really say much as in those days most women were in the kitchen and didn’t have time to be part of a board game 😯 😉

  3. Used to love that catchy little jingle they advertised it with… “Does he talk bullshit, is he a ****?” It’s got to be Troy!

My god not a day goes by without you mentioning your secret crush. 😛

    Don’t worry Chicken, it’s our secret. 😛 😳

  5. i hate the close season – but i spend my time (more than is healthy)- scouring the web for snippets of transfer rumours affecting us. every time i log on i hope that we’ve signed somebody – as far as i’m concerned if its somebody i’ve never really heard of (like Cabaye last year – Tiote the year before) – then its much more exciting.

i’m a sad case really – like a lot on here i suspect. Still – it could be worse – i could be a mackem

  6. Due the past few seasons transfer dealings I’ve totally disregarded any connections with players. (unless my source phones me on the bat phone).

We seem to get players who never even come on the radar.

  7. Troy, you normally go into hibernation after your transfer goes… normally you spend many months sleeping of the embarressment in your cave 🙂

  8. @7 shame, you’ll have to think of a new way to draw attention to your pathetic existence now. Maybe you could think of a witty sign off for all of your posts? Something like woohoohoo – that would be hilarious! 🙄

      (Quote)

  9. The papers etc know fuk all, as we never get linked to the players we sign.
As for guess who it was a **** game 😉 it was more for old people like Ice 😆

  10. I reckon forget about Debuchy. Media coverage will have bumped his price up. As Stavers says, our signings seem to come out of nowhere. Think the Ben Arfa saga was a lesson they don’t want repeating, fair enough we got our man in the end but only as no one else was interested.

Shame, but he’ll go for close to 10 million and if we spend that on a right back I’ll be shocked to say the least

  11. Im thinking we might get kalou. He’s mates with Tiote and I believe they have comparable personalities outside of football, so like Tiote, kalou might think of Newcastle as a good place to continue his career.
I don’t think we’d be interested if there was a fee involved but since he’s on a free, has European experience and would fit nicely in the LW role that Ba was playing in last year, he might be a real possibility

  12. If the price for de Jong is 10 mil then I think we’ll be waiting for that price to drop. I honestly don’t believe his game is built for the prem and I wouldn’t be surprised to hear there are differing opinions within the club on him.

      (Quote)

  13. The Anita rumour came from nothing so there might be some truth there, but then the agent has tried to make it public to increase the fee. We know Ashley doesn’t like those tactics and I think they will backfire on the agent.

  14. I think we’ll be looking in Italy again this summer as we tend to like bringing in players in bunches of certian cultures so they can feel comfortable.
Santon is the only natural speaking Italian in the squad and so they may try to remedy that.
Problem is it is difficult to pry Italians away from serie a. Most know it’ll be the death of any national team aspirations they may have.

  15. I think the Clyne deal will be done but the club is testing palace’s resolve in the face of arbitration.
We are considered the best of the rest and unless one of the top 4/5 clubs come in for him, he’ll view us as the best option. I think that will happen because the bigger clubs may want to wait to see what he can do in the prem first because they all have there own young rb prospects that they’re developing.

  16. I think we may be bringing some more players in from the lower leagues as well. I think pards is keen on a couple of them from seeing them in his time managing down there. We obviously need more numbers in the squad this year so he may be allowed to take a punt on a couple to fill out the squad. Probably players like perch who can play a role in multiple positions.

  17. Unfortunately our success in the French market will make it difficult to get good deals this summer. A player that maybe valued by 3-5 mil by their clubs will mostly likely see that players value jump to 6-10 mil simply because we have made contact. Clubs can use our name to start a bidding war because if we’re interested, he’ll be a quality player based on the success we’ve had there.
We’ll have to rely more on players forcing a move to our club despite interest from others which ultimately gets us a more driven and committed player IMO.
And of corse there’s always the release clause players.

Poor Toonsy put all that thought into it 😐

  19. Maiga tore a Cisse muscle Jersey… The muscle sits just above the signature line on the medical clearance form 🙂

      (Quote)

  20. Sorry Jersey, read the article but it has been a long day for me 🙂 🙂

      (Quote)

  21. Ha I think pards pulled it for him because maiga was throwing all his toys out after the deal fell through.

      (Quote)

  22. Its fine mate I know Australia is 2 days ahead of us so the article is old already to you 😉

      (Quote)

  23. The Maiga deal falling through seemed suspious at the time but Cisse coming through the door soon after certainly put the talk to rest.. no one gave a **** after that 🙂

  24. i see the rags are saying chelsea are likely to bid 18mil for benny cannot see it myself with the m/f players they have already signed without ever playing in the PL,i would take 25+mil for him like if it was spent on more new players

      (Quote)

  25. Ice didn’t they get hulk? They play the same position. Benny won’t fancy that

      (Quote)

  26. Ice, it also comes down to how many players can Chelsea have on their feckin list.. they have signed/been linked with a shed load of players..

      (Quote)

  27. I love how some chelski fans didn’t want dimateo because he couldn’t lure the big name players.
Chelski have £€$₩¥£ for that. Don’t need a manager to do that job.

      (Quote)

  28. Personally think its bollocks considering they have mata, sturridge and malouda and have already bought Hazard, Marin, De bruyne all attacking mids/wingers and are apparantly getting Hulk as well.

Just the press finding another way of having a pop at us after their beloved twitching hunchback got the bullet and turned their ba and krul stories to ****…

      (Quote)

  29. AMF aye they have spent nearly 100mil and they gave their last manager 18mil pay off still chicken feed to roman 😯

      (Quote)

  30. JG they have payed 32mil for hazzard to make things tick and hes got no PL ex,think he might be in for a slight shock imo

      (Quote)

  31. At least we won’t have to read stories about our players going to Spurs now 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

      (Quote)

  32. Ice I think he’ll be fine because Mata will do all the work. He’d struggle more if he was asked to do too much. His pace will get him some goals and he can pick a pass but agree that he won’t be living up to that fee next season. After that who knows.

      (Quote)

  33. Krul has to get a shout against my Portuguese.
Skeltonberg was at fault for both goals against the germs

      (Quote)

  34. Good point CC… I reckon they would have some one ready and waiting to replace the tax dodger. I can’t see it being a spur of the moment thing.. if you will pardon the pun 🙂

      (Quote)

  35. CC aye you have a point or maybe they are going the chelsea way,the chairman/owner buys the players the manager just has to get on with it 😉

  36. Has ‘arry been sacked? Did I miss something?
Wouldn’t want vertonghan now as it would seem he’d have one eye here and one on his next move.

  37. Look at Man U and the Gunners, those teams are the managers team and they have both been sucessful in the past decade and a half. Chelsea were sucessful when Morinho had his team.. when a manager has to adopt a team it can end in tears.. just ask AVB

  43. Ice ,I reckon it’s true if it’s sky ,even if its the Italian version . At least it will not be PL club 😉

  44. There were reports last week that they were interested in ba but couldn’t reach his wage demands. Maybe they upped their offer.

  45. T.C@57 -Well he did save em from the drop and get them competing at the top of the table ,so it’s a kind of success I guess. 😉

  48. Kim – not saying he wasn’t a success, but “unparallelled” – they must be having a bubble! (as old melted welly face would say) 😆

  54. Why is it reported in euros when turkey don’t use the euro and neither do we? Or maybe it’s because it is Italy reporting it. Why Italy and not UK or turkey? Strange.

It’s news to #nufc if Demba Ba has left, let’s put it that way. You’d think they’d have to talk to someone at the club first…
