Would you take Andy Carroll on loan?

Would you take him on loan?
New Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has refused to quell speculation linking Andy Carroll with a loan move to AC Milan.

This will of course send media outlets into a frenzy linking Carroll with loan moves here, there and everywhere, including us, of that I have no doubt.

Carroll has struggled since joining Liverpool from Newcastle, but he did start to show a marked improvement in performance towards the tail end of last season and he showed glimpses of what he is capable of for England at EURO 2012. From an outside perspective, the difference between Newcastle’s Andy Carroll and Liverpool’s Andy Carroll is simply a question of supply – Liverpool, Steven Gerrard aside, seem unable to supply him with the balls that he likes to attack, and the problem is that I can’t see that improving once Brendan Rodgers implements his tippy-tappy style of play.

Rodgers was asked what he would do if AC Milan did actually make an approach for the former Newcastle number nine, and this is what he had to say:

“It’s something I would have to look at, I have to be honest. I’m not going to sit here and say I will never let anyone go on loan, then come in here in two weeks and a player’s gone, and you’re saying ‘you said you wouldn’t let them go.”

“There are many things to going on loan. Is it going to be beneficial for the club, that’s the most important thing? Sometimes a player going out on loan – in general, not just Andy – can benefit the club in the long term.”

“It gets them game experience, and they come back a better player, a more confident one. Certainly more so than if they’ve been sitting on the bench for the majority of the season.”

“Andy’s always going to be linked with clubs, whether he was here or not. I have spoken to him on his holidays, he knows exactly where he stands, but I have had no inquiries.”

I think you know where I’m going to go with this. Would you take Carroll back on a season long loan deal?

Personally I wouldn’t, except in one circumstance which I will explain later. The reason I wouldn’t take him back? It’s not because of anything that has gone on previously, it’s not the notion that he gave up his Geordie passport when moving to Liverpool, nor the fact that he gave up what he said was his dream for some extra cash.

The only issue I have with it is that it would be a loan deal, and to me we’ve moved on from acquiring loan players unless there is a chance of a permanent deal at the end of it, which will never happen with Andy Carroll. So the option would be to take him, let him try and find form, then send him back to Liverpool a better player. No thanks…

The only viable reason for us taking him back on loan would be if we failed to get a striker in over the summer. It would help us out and give us a short term fix to a problem that, hopefully, won’t exist anyway.

It’ll never happen, but I’d be interest to see what people think, which is why I’ve added a poll so get voting!

  1. Yep, big change of heart from me, surprised myself by feeling sorry for him during the game at St James’ 😯 but is still a decent player 😉

    i remember BATTY saying he could fk off and wouldnt take him back for nowt when he left,two-faced fecker 😀 😀

  3. Carroll is world class in the air, better than anything we have at Newcastle when a cross comes in the box.. Doubt Liverpool would loan him to us because we’re fighting for the same 4th spot..

  4. dog well i remember being shot down by you dave and cough cough rich wen i tryed to defend him against fatty ,all 3 of you realy showed your true colours that day 🙂

  5. he doesnt fit in Rodgers style. In fact i cant see him playing for milain either. But i dont care, i just dont want to see him here next season!

  6. Liverpool fan here, I hope for our sakes he doesn’t go to your lot otherwise we will really struggle to keep up with you again this year. If you can keep hold of Ba and Cisse and add Carroll to the mix you would probably have the best strike force in the league. He was starting to hit form at the end of last season, he was a beast against Chelsea in both games so if you signed him, you’d be signing a fitter, sharper Andy Carroll than what we saw for the first 15 months, and a player that can do it in the big games.

    Good luck to you lot next season, been a pleasure having a team playing attractive football in the mix for champions league places without spending hundreds of millions.

  7. hell no i would never have him back. the bloke has no loyalty he only cares about money hense why he left for liverpool. and to be honest he wouldnt get into the newcastle team anymore

  8. I voted No, only coz my heart carried more weight than my head on this one.
    He’s a really good player and a really handful up front, and I defended the lad when he left saying he was kinda backed into a corner a little bit.
    But when he blatantly dived to try and win a penalty and could have got Krul sent off, I’m afraid I lost all respect for the kid – seriously bad crack for me that like.
    Head says he’s a good player. Heart says he’s a tw@t.

  9. COOP dont think you need to worry he wont be comeing back here ashley has said loans are a waste of money and will not go down that path,mind it was his mouth piece that said it 😉

  10. I’ll give this question a whirl on this article as well, coz I’ve had nee takers on the last 2 🙁

    Does anyone else agree that it would be worth offering £9-10m to Palace for Clyne and Zaha?

      (Quote)

  11. SHARPY they are asking 10mil for zaha alone if thats the case nee chance,mind i could see us going for clyne if this french deal falls through 😉

  12. The romantic in me would love to have him back, coming on and score a hatrick against the bindippers. Unfortunately, this is the same romantic who brought into the Owen signing, KK’s return and Shearer’s appointment.

    In football one thing is for sure, never go back.

    The team and style we play has moved on leaps and bounds since he left. We played some fantastic football last season and to move on we need a certain type of player. Sadly the answer is not Andy Carroll

      (Quote)

  13. I’d have him back so long as we didn’t change our style of play simply to accommodate him. He doesn’t fit Rodgers style so don’t think he will be in pool next year…especially if they sign Dempsey as rumoured

      (Quote)

  14. Yeh I would like him back ,but it would never happen,he’ll most likely get loaned to stoke or something 😉

    Sharpy@13 Still pondering that one tbh .

  15. It would cost ower much for a start.Then he would be arrested aboot two nights later,so no thanks…

  16. Jose…I’ll just repeat a comment on I said on a previous thread…

    “Aye, Brendan Rodgers would never pay a Gatesheed born, owa 6ft target man cos that doesn’t fit into his fantastic, passing style of football at all, nope, no way…….who was that Danny Graham fella again?” 😉

      (Quote)

  17. Batty….and we were right 😆 …my attitude has softened towards AC has softened a little, but a young un with his agent whispering in one ear and Nolan in the other was probably easily swayed……he was still a greedy fecker tho and could have turned down a move and stayed if he wanted 😉 😆

      (Quote)

  18. Yeah I think I would take him back but I cant see a deal happening. Im not trying to suggest that this article is suggesting a deal is in place or anything like that.

      (Quote)

  19. Andy can’t pass, can’t control a ball, can’t do anything expect be big. Plus he we have moved on – our players are technical – he doesn’t belong.

    He should try Stoke or Big Sams West Ham. He (like Liverpooi showed) is a step back to the dark ages.

      (Quote)

  20. I would have him back tomorrow but only if there was the chance to make it permanant, I was gutted at 1st with him until it came out that it was our then captain fantastic tugboat Judas Nolan that talked him into going, from then I have felt sorry for him because he was young and stupid and I think he soon realised that he’d made a big mistake.

      (Quote)

  21. Stardust you are right he would fit in at wham. Seriously he needs to work on playing with the ball at his feet or he’ll never be more than a crouch

      (Quote)

  22. Perfect replacement for Loverboy and Best! Plus he can shine Cisse’s boots while he’s sitting on the bench 😉

      (Quote)

  23. Ice – they must be pi$$ed if they want £10m just for Zaha. I’d probs go with £7m for him and £3m compo for Clyne.
    My only reservation would be that Zaha is similar to Sammi and Clyne similar to Tav.
    I do think Clyne would be a good buy for £3m tho and would have the all important sell on value.
    I think I’d like us to go for Cissokho, if Debuchy doesn’t happen. It would be good to have a natural left footed player at left back, then move Santon to the right. Then Clyne could cover both LB and RB if we got him.

      (Quote)

  24. You guys are mad for saying we should “have him back”! I would never have him back after he walked out for £££. Besides, he doesn’t suit our current playstyle; he is more suited to playing in a team of Long Ball (destined to go to a team like Stoke, West Ham, etc.).

      (Quote)

  25. I don’t think hed get into our first team, Cisse is possibly the best striker I’ve seen here in a long time based on his all round performances, movement, awareness and the like. He had a couple of quiet games, but he hadn’t yet learned the language, and he has a chance to come on even further.

    Ba was great after Ramadan last year up until just after he came back from the ACON, looked sharp, two hat-tricks, great touch. After the ACON he seemed to lose a yard of pace, maybe it was just burn out, or he could be a form striker.

    Carroll would offer us a totally different type of threat, however I wouldn’t play him ahead of Cisse & Ba, Liverpool simply wouldn’t let him go to sit on a Bench. Having said that I’d take him back if Ba ends up leaving (don’t think he will), but we still would need another striker, and one in the mould of cisse / Ba.

      (Quote)

  26. Take him back, leave him to play our low level cup and European games, and other than that he can rot just like he does with liverpool 😛

      (Quote)

  27. I don’t agree with those saying he suits a long ball style, he doesn’t, never did at us. His style prefers wing play and crosses into the box, he was good at holding the ball up and linking the play, bringing in the likes of Nolan from midfield. He was also a powerhouse running at players. Those who say he thrived on long ball play must not have attended hardley any matches.

    Yes he did offer a lot of danger from long free kicks etc, but thats when we were getting the balls in the box. Not just a lump it type.

      (Quote)

  28. he would have to get rid of his ****** pony tail i reckon, he looks a proper wanka with it.

    Did you see De Jong’s quotes today? I beats the hell out me how come we have such a good scouting network but we managed to find i guy that has no intentions of coming to newcastle and we are not even on his radar.. we then put in bids for him, fly over to wrap it up then come home with nothing other than a well polished knob from amsterdam straza. The whole thing looks to be a proper fiasco with regard to De Jong. Two vital bits that we didnt tick off… Does De Jong want to play for NUFC – NOPE. Did we have a bid even in the ball park of Twente – NOPE… why bother going over there? madness, sheer madness haha.

  29. Kev @33

    Agreed-Shola and Bestie were/are far better “target men”, Bestie has much better control from the head/chest and Shola can actually pass…

      (Quote)

  30. I wonder if Liverpool will retain any strikers for next season given Brendan Rogers will be looking to implement a strategy of totally dominate possession in your own 🙄

    And I wouldn’t have Carroll back either…

      (Quote)

  31. Right, I’ve sorted it:

    LDJ = £10m
    Debuchy = £7m
    Douglas = £5m.

    Write those off and go for:

    Zaha = £6-7m
    Clyne = £3m (compo)
    Cissokho = £5m
    Guidetti = £6m
    Good = £500k

    I really think that would be a better use of the same money, and would give us excellent depth to the squad of players we already have.

      (Quote)

  32. Craig I did say before that Jabba and co would be happy with all the rag s linking us to LDJ and he could be just a smokescreen to keep a target out of the headlines

      (Quote)

  33. Dave – I reckon Baines is off to Man U.

    So other than another defender, you’d agree? … could I tempt ya with Sakho in place of Zaha?

      (Quote)

  34. Sharpy I was worried at 1st about Douglas with his reputation but maybe he has wised up a bit with age plus I think a move could be a good thing.
    Debouchy is the main one I would like I just think he’ll do real well with us and the fact that he seems to want to come to us

      (Quote)

  35. Dave – I agree, but do you not think that Santon could do equally as well on the right?.
    My concern is that Lille will accept no less than £7m for Debuchy – especially if reports that Inter are also sniffing are true.
    I just like the idea of having a LB at left back.

    I know Pardew seems keen on Debuchy, so that is most likely who will come in. Just thinking of alternatives.

      (Quote)

  36. We will not go for Carroll.

    If we had wanted a Carroll style forward we would have bought Bas Dost.

    I still believe that Pardew intends to play Jonas and Santon in the full back positions but is still considering which one to put at RB with the other at LB.

      (Quote)

  37. Sharpy I have a feeling Simmo wont be here so I would like a back 4 of Saylor, Colo, Santon and Debouchy, and it would be even better if Simmo was here and him and Douglas could be fighting it out for a starting place 😉

    Ice I liked Lovens and think he was a good player I just don’t think we had people on the same wave length as him to see some of the sweets runs he made

      (Quote)

  38. It seems as if we are not looking to recruit a striker, so as a back-up I would take Andy Carroll back on loan. However, Cisse and Ba would still be my main strikers. In my opinion Andy Carroll’s all-round game hasn’t improved. However, put the ball in the box and on his head and he’s dynamite.

    Haven’t you noticed that LDJ has pretty much told us to Foxtrot Oscar, the bloke obviously wants to go to Borussia Mönchengladbach 😆 😆

    Dave… I agree about Douglas, although other than seeing him gan radge on youtube I’ve seen **** all of him :mrgreen:

    Richie – thanks for pointing it out to Munich that I had written LDJ off and was offering alternative options. 💡 .. Which I’m guessing aren’t fancied, as only Dave has spoke about them.

    There was me thinking it was only Ice that didn’t read my postings properly 🙄 🙁

      (Quote)

  48. Sharpy…I’m not sure about Zaha as haven’t seen or even read that much about him, wouldn’t mind the rest of them though.

    Ref Ice… he always reads posts properly, the problem is that by the time he gets to the end of a sentence, he’s already forgotten the start of it 😉 😆

  49. Sharpy , I would quite like us to sign Clyne as backup but would still want a first teamer in ,also think 6-7m for Zaha is a bit steep really.
