Have we got our transfer priorities wrong?

Well, where do we start?
With all this talk of Andy Carroll it’s pretty easy to get distracted with regard to what else our team needs over the summer.

In fact this whole Carroll fiasco has made me wonder if we’re barking up the wrong tree in terms of where we should be looking to strengthen first.

Obviously we have the two young lads – Romain Amalfitano and Gael Bigirimana – already signed and initiated in the black and white stripes but I get the sense that they will be more for the future or for backup and will effectively replace the spaces once occupied by Alan Smith and Danny Guthrie. However there are a number of other positions we need to strengthen if we are to make the most of our jolly into Europe and look to try and repeat the feat over the course of the next season.

Yes we need to strengthen our attack but we also have a defence that needs bolstering, and to be honest I would prefer it if we looked at that first. Good teams are built on solid foundations and all that….

That is not to say that we have to be entirely systematic in our approach to transfers and I dare say things are being looked at that nobody knows about, but I would personally prefer it if I knew we had a new centre-back on the way along with a new right-back/left-back. Of course rumours are that Douglas and Mathieu Debuchy are being eyed to fill those roles, but as yet, nothing…

I’m fairly hopeful that it will all come together come the end of the transfer window but until then I do worry. Perhaps I shouldn’t? Perhaps I should have a bit more faith? Whatever. I just think that I’d be a little less apprehensive if we could get an actual first-team player through the door that would strengthen the squad in any number of places where we look a bit light on both numbers and quality.

The question is, where do you start?

  1. Worrying is the last thing you should be doing. We’ve signed two excellent talents to add to the fact that Vuckic, Abeid, Tavernier and Ferguson are now another year older and wiser, with the final “internal” good news being that Steven Taylor, Sylvain Marveaux and – albeit to a lesser extent – Gabriel Obertan all appear to be back to proper, full fitness. I used to hate it under Shepherd when the old “they’re like new players” lines were trotted out, but we have to be honest here and admit that, in Taylor and Marveaux, it’s completely true!! Into this mix we throw the fact that all of our best players have now grown as a squad and I don’t think I’m alone in being supremely confident that Debuchy, Douglas and Carroll will also be back in the squad.

I’ve never been this excited about Newcastle United since KK welcomed Big Al to the club. And I still have a feeling that there’ll be another player or two to come after the three mentioned.

  2. We will only have our priorities wrong if we sign Carroll and not a centre half or Debuchy.

As we are in talks with Lille, Liverpoop and have a opening bid on the table for Douglas and are “increasingly optimistic” on getting them done according to journos id say they have it spot on at the mo… 😉

  3. All good with the transfer plans… the problem is the media, they have taken the Carroll talk and made it bigger than Ben Hur.. So if you base what we are concentrating on right now from the articles in newsnow for example, you would swear that a striker was a priority, when it is not the case at all..

  4. Im not concerned when it’s all around press speculation, and if the right one isn’t available then we don’t want to buy second best, wait for the next window, it worked for Cisse. We have a good transfer policy now and If it ain’t broken, don’t try and fix it.

  5. You’re bang on the money here…Carroll is only a half decent move at best and that’s only in the instance we lose Ba.

He will actually unsettle the team…we don’t need players taking sides in the Taylor / Carroll school yard fistycuffs and there’s not doubt he’ll prove divisive. if allowed back

He’s no where near as good as Ba or Cisse and there’s no way we’re gonna play all three at the same time and if we start changing our tactics to suit Carroll we’ll get drawn in hoofing it up the park instead of working it down the wings like we’ve done so well at last year.

Hopefully it’s all just paper talk to distract attention away from our real targets and objectives

  6. This is a devious plot by Ashley to divert everyone from the real issue which is keeping Demba by getting him to accept a new contract. It goes like this – we will go back for Andy Carrol or at least make an official enquiry, which Liverpool will sling back at us as derisory, but not derisory enough to not keep the door open. Liverpools pride will be such that if we know that we are sniffing then they will want to rub the noses in it. £20M for AC – yeah right not even Ashley is that daft, but if it were a player and a fee and Demba was the player? Why Demba why not Papiss? Answer cos Demba has a clause and has not signed a new contract with the Toon. So Ashley bluffs and double bluffs in the negotiations and if Demba goes Carrol arrives. If he signs a new contract Carrol goes to West Ham or maybe Toon on the last day of the transfer window as Rogers won’t keep him. He would make a good impact sub but Demba is more likely to be on the team sheet at the start. Who knows AC may learn a bit from Ba and Cisse and Liverpool about negotiating strategies – Twocing is the best they can hope for in that line

  7. ime not bothered one way or the other over judas,i want the defence sorted ie a couple of players in there, hoped it would be done and had them in for most of pre-season at least 🙁

  8. Definitely the wrong policy..As I’ve said we need a CB, RB and Left wing/forward more than an actual striker.

See we’ve missed out on Clyne then…we need to wrap some deals up asap.

  10. Doesn’t matter where we start, as long as we finish with the desired result. And tbh it seems like we are trying to fill all three positions, I wouldn’t think we are chasing Carroll more than other positions its just the Carroll saga will bring more media coverage, naturally.

I’m a long time reader, rare poster, of this blog. But Toonsy, I find many of your articles to be very negative. More optimisim please! Other than that you always write a good article.

  11. Ice-I know mate, I really rate Marv as well and actually mentioned him a couple of times in the two seasons gone when all reports were linking him to liverpool after his contract ended. Though I wanted him as a left back because of how defensive Jonas was

Problem is, we only really have him and Benny as senior wingers and from what I’ve seen both of them tend to run out of gas at about 70mins if they’ve been doing their jobs properly. Its not all bad as its a good opportunity for Sammeobi/Fergie or even Vuckic to get on the pitch and show what they can do, but that still leaves us with the problem that only those two plus Ba are senior starters. If we plan to play all our matches in 4-3-3 this season we will need a recognized senior player that can start matches or indeed change a match as a sub.

      (Quote)

  12. Hardly surprising that the Andy Carroll situation dominates headlines ,since we sold him for shed loads and now want him back on the cheap. But I have to say it’s not stopping me worrying about are other areas we should be sorting out. If this is a clumsy attempt by the board to keep us distracted from our real and pressing issues then it’s a massive fail 🙄 I’m sure most of us will be very ,very p’d off if our defence is not sorted out soon .This is the main business they should be concentrating on first and foremost.

      (Quote)

  13. And as I suspected Spurs have kept VDV….still a big possibility of losing Modric I suppose but right now they’ve spent enough to make themselves a top class side, let alone Chelski…

  14. Bit annoyed to miss out on clyne. but that may be because pards rates tavernier more highly..

Do we know of simmo is anywhere near signing yet? if he does i don’t think we are in great need of a right back as we’ll have about 5 capable of playing there. so do we are”need” debuchy? i’d argue that a left back is more of a necessity.
As is centre mid. with the 4-3-3 we were playing Jonas in the middle. not ideal.

      (Quote)

  15. To be fair, I think we have our transfer policy pretty much right, although I can understand why fans worry about our defensive cover.

We have never been a club that has quite managed to fully establish a solid back line and we normally just about get there, only for injury or transfer to scupper a promising solid defence.

This time though, I really believe that we are so committed to bringing in the required quality that we will not accept also rans or over priced players who could possibly upset the apple cart.

Debuchy and Douglas have obviously had the full scrutiny of our scouts and appear to fit the bill for strengthening what we have at the club and if the price is right then I’m sure we will get them over the line.

I don’t think Pardew has his priorities back to front or anything like that…I just think he would prefer to bring in HIS targets rather than settle for the lesser contingency option if he can possibly do that.

I think we all know, it’s gonna be a season of mixing and matching, assuming we at least progress a bit through certain competitions, which will stretch what we have to the limit, which includes strikers, assuming we lose Ba and Cisse, yet it will be no different at the back…especially central defence, where we do not boast full on bonafide centre backs apart from Willo, Colo and Taylor, but we do have “in the trench” cover with the likes of Perch e.t.c, who can do a job in that position but are not actually ideal if we have aspirations of consolidation in the prem, whilst adding a potential trophy to the cabinet.

It appears that Pardew has started in the middle and is slowly spreading it out with the strikers all but sorted barring one tasty extra, which now leaves a little bit of smoothing over at the back, which should give us a fairly solid foundation for this season with some quality rotational back up for a push on for the cups hopefully.

Plus the fact that I’m not very well hung but that’s another story that I won’t go into because it has no relevance on football but if anyone really wants to know, it doesn’t even show much of a bulge ,even in tight tracksuit bottoms, which pisses me off, yet I try not to let it bother me and try to concentrate on Newcastle. 😀

      (Quote)

  16. Solano-To be honest, I’m more comfortable with Santon, Jonas, Marv(probably too lightweight for Prem left back, but he can play there) and Perch on the left. For me Perch is actually better on the left, which I don’t really understand but there we go.

On the right I guess Jonas could still be there, but I’d never have Saylor there, not unless we bring in a truly top class central defender. Though we do have Tav, so I suppose he can do a job there.

I think Simmo and Santon are actually pretty even in what they offer overall-with simmo being a bit better defensively and santon offensively, but Santon has much more time ahead of him and should be bedded in properly soon..

  18. Hang on a minute! They can’t win, can they?

If they leave the persuit of any player until late in the window, they get stick for not getting going early enough. If they pursue all avenues at once, they get stick about prioritisation!

We all know that most transfer activity happens in the last couple of weeks of the window. Why on earth would you set about your targets sequentially? They know what they want, mostly who they want, and they go after all of them at once. Priority doesn’t enter into it.

How good to our recruitment guys have to get before we trust them? They have to be the best in the country, if not the world based on the past few years. Give ’em credit!

  19. I do worry that we have our transfer policies wrong. I know we are talking with Lille, Lpool and Twente – but the reality is that we still haven’t brought any players in for the positions we are short in yet – and we are already 2 pre-season friendlies in.
The reason why I think they are wrong is because Ashley likes to do deals on his terms, bringing in good players on the cheap.
Yes Debuchy wants to come to us, but Lille won’t be rushed and won’t sell cheap, even when they find his replacement they will still play hardball – coz they don’t need to sell.
Lpool will not sell Carroll for less than £15m and we won’t pay £15m. They are one of our main competitors this season so they aren’t going to loan Carroll to us of all teams! – plus I don’t want him back.
Twente have already said they won’t sell Douglas for less than £5m – so we offer £4m???. They already have Douglas’ replacement and have money in the bank from the LDJ sale so they sell Douglas on the cheap.

It’s all well and good having top targets, but what’s the likelihood of signing them?
My big fear is that we go into the last week of the window (which I know is a way off yet) with Pardew sat in a press conf saying ‘we are still one or two players short’. We were told the targets had been identified and signed early in the window – yet 3 wks in and we aren’t close to signing and first team players – while teams around us have 2-3 plus players in already.

I’m pretty pissed off on missing out on Clyne like. He’s a 21yr old full back with bucket loads of potential that would have cost 2-3m in compo. Hes a good player who would he worth five times that in the next 2 years. Because we are busy pissing around!!!

  20. @newkie, maybe there’s been progress in the Simpson talks which is why we are shifting some focus to attacking signings.
Centre back is the main and only real necessity atm.
do believe simmo is vastly underrated just because he doesnt offer much going forward.

      (Quote)

  21. Sharpy, maybe we didn’t want clyne?
I rate him and wanted us to sign him but we do have: simmo/santon/raylor/perch/tav all capable of playing there…
Also i find much what you are getting annoyed about regarding bids and stuff ridiculous as thy are based on speculation from the rags!

Wolfie@16 You just reminded me of something they were talking about on breakfast T.V this morning. They were saying about this story in the press about a chap who got stopped at the airport on suspicion of smuggling something onto a plane down the front of his trousers ❗ .Turns out he’s this famous bloke who has a 13 and half inch manhood 😯 Lorraine kellys face was a picture when they told her 😆 Funniest bit was this guy reckons he’s gonna ware cycle shorts in future so as to make it clear he’s not a smuggler 😯

  25. Kim, I’d like to believe that the bloke was me but alas, he isn’t. 😥

I was once stopped at the airport by a pretty female luggage checker and she searched my suitcase, then she started sniffing up , making me paranoid.

She kept searching, then stopping and sort of sniffing towards my direction, which made me fidget and start to sweat.

She then said, “something smells nice and strong and it’s coming from your direction, what have you got on?” and I said, ” well, I’ve got a raging hard on but I didn’t think you could smell it.” 😯

  26. Ice @ 21, did you ever read Soccernomics? The author’s talked briefly about AC Milan’s special academy and medical expertise. They said something to the affect that their medical team had all kinds of things that they looked at to determine who would pose injury risks and that so far their method has proven successful…maybe this is one of the things to look at…

      (Quote)

  27. ST – Clyne = £3m and could be sold on at a profit, just as they are talking about doing with Tiote. You either keep a really good player or sell him for £7-10m and make a profit.

Also, how is it paper talk when we went to Holland and bid for LDJ and lost out, discussed Douglas and still haven’t agreed a fee. We’ve wanted Debuchy for ages and Pardew has discussed him – yet we haven’t agreed a fee, and Pardew has discussed Carroll this week as well, not from the papers – from the horses mouth mate!
We still haven’t agreed any fees, nobody in for a medical or over looking at the ground and training facilities – we are not close to signing anyone and I dont need any paper to tell me that.

      (Quote)

  28. Just remember, this club are well known now for leaving us all wondering about certain signings and having us all thinking things are dead in the water, then bang, we end up with Cisse and what not, so it’ll be nice to see what falls out of the lucky bag.

      (Quote)

  29. Sharpy that only works if clyne actually plays. would he get into our team? no he wouldn’t. Even less likely of we sign debuchy as well!

Yeah perhaps discussed players, means eff all, we have no idea what rigorous negotiations take place.

“we are not close to signing anyone” have you honestly learnt nothing from our last few transfer windows?

      (Quote)

  30. Also Sharpy ldj stated himself that he preferred going to that German team, what the hell are the board supposed to do about that?

      (Quote)

  31. Solano-Nah I agree about Simmo, thought he was a good player, maybe just not good enough for a European push. But with all the stick he gets here I’m not so sure he’ll be staying.

When Colo was stalling with his 80k around deal or whatever people were banging at the board to get it sorted, yet when Simmo wanted an upgrade on 20k or something he was a greedy c*nt…anyway, Debauchy would be an improvement regardless and right now i’d rather see any signing that improves the first team-as opposed to AC…

CB is priority though like you say.

      (Quote)

  32. Wolfie – it’s also well known for failing to bring players in when needed.
This time last year we started the season without the CF we had been chasing, and were fortunate that Ba was in form and didn’t get injured. Then fortunate (IMO) to get Cisse for as little as we did in Jan.
But then in Jan, we didn’t bring in the CB that we were chasing – and again (IMO) were fortunate with players not getting injuries.

Let’s be honest here, last summer we chased a CF and failed and Jan we chased a CB and failed. Yet people want to buy into this romantic belief that Newcastle have a trick up our sleeve and will shock the world. Not for me like, I want new signings in early to gel with the squad and be part of the pre-season preparation – not signed in the last week and being eased in when the season has already started.

      (Quote)

  33. Wolfie@30

Let’s hope it stays the lucky bag eh. We got Cisse one january, the January before that we were delving into the free transfers for quality like Aliadiere 😆

      (Quote)

  34. Newkie i feel bad for the guy. seems like he’s brilliant with the team, friendly with the fans on twitter, arguably our second best defender last year and yet perchs name gets sung not his! he must be so confused. i reckon everyone chanting willo’s name would be the last straw for him 😆

      (Quote)

  35. Sharpy if signing 17 goal striker for free and one of the best midfield talents in Europe for less than 5mill isn’t a trick our sleeve i don’t know what is.

Which clubs are you envious of this window? i can’t think of any super $$ clubs aside. stop berating our incredible transfer strategy.

      (Quote)

  36. SHARPY@36, aye I know what you’re saying but we took a gamble to be fair and sometimes , in our position, you have to take a calculated gamble and fortunately it paid off.

This time round, we are still taking a gamble on targets but I think we are more in control of the gambles now, knowing that at least we do have cover for the time being which puts us in a position to at least tough any transfer dealing out and not look as though we are playing the begging game or the desperation game, which clubs are looking out for so they can play stump up the fee games.

Ashley and Llambias are more astute than they are given credit for and so it Pardew in my opinion.

There is a saying that my Nana made up, in the 1920’s and her saying was, “all good things, including potential transfers, come to those who wait”

Well actually , my Nana didn’t make that up herself but she told me she did and me being a naive 2 year old, fell for her lies didn’t I. 😀

      (Quote)

  37. Not really sure what the panic is , we have a few deals been negotiated and they take time. Im 100% confident that club will bring in the players they feel we need to compete next season.

  38. Let’s not forget that the European championship has not long finished and players and clubs are still playing catch up in the transfer stakes, which includes replacements for those that are hankering for a move.

Of course , it would be nice to get targets over the line to give them some pre-season bonding with their new team mates but just think of Cisse and how he hit the ground running.

      (Quote)

  39. I’m just amazed that after the windows we’ve had, our new reputation as the undisputed kings of transfer genius, and finishing 5th in the prem, people are still whining about transfer strategy and claiming to know better. Because obviously we’ve recruited nowt but rubbish in the past three seasons.

    Weapons-grade muppetry. 🙄

  42. ST – yes I’ve learned from the prev windows – we didn’t sign a CF last summer and didn’t get a CB in Jan!!
Ba and Cabaye were very canny signings, I agree. They were also signed fairly early on in the window – and that’s my point!! I want good players in early.
At the start of last season you can not dispute that Pardew himself was disappointed not to get his CF and again in Jan when we failed to get a CB!
re LDJ – yeah, he said he wanted MGB so why waste time going out there to speak with him?!
We could have found out that he wanted CL football over the phone, then move on rather than waste another week.
We are now doing the same with Douglas! just get the fee agreed and negotiate.

      (Quote)

  43. Solano-Exactly, seems the perfect pro as well really. I mean if you have twitter you do need to take the bad with the good, but what some “fans” were calling him is disgraceful really. And with Stevie T rumoured to be on around 50k given how often he gets injured, I can see Simmo’s argument about wanting more than half of that, considering how often he’s played..

      (Quote)

  44. SHARPY even pardew said he wanted players in early and had been working on targets before season ended, but euros might slow them up so wanted them in before then, but some clubs were holding back hopeing to get a better price 😐

      (Quote)

  45. Sharpy a manager is always going to want more players. it’s up to the board to make sure it’s within final constraints.
we have no proof we went out there to speak to him! and you were.moaning we didn’t get him.
This isn’t football manager i doubt it as easy you presume it is. they can’t agree the fee at the drop of a hat.

What do you mean we didn’t sign a cf, we signed Ba!!

Again, which clubs are you looking at enviously? if you can’t think of one, maybe just maybe this whole transfer malarky isn’t as simple as you make out.

      (Quote)

  46. Ice – I understand that it takes time mate, what’s pissing me off is chasing targets who don’t want to come (LDJ) or players who would cost too much (Carroll). Then with players we could buy(Debuchy,Douglas) not getting the fee sorted. Part of the delay is us going in too low!
I get Twente moved the posts with LDJ but they haven’t with Douglas and Lille haven’t with Debuchy.
There may be benefits with playing the waiting game but the players also loose out on vilate time to bed in and be properly ready for the start of the season.

      (Quote)

  47. @newkie i know it was really bad. huge shame really. as we would have one of the best back up rbs in the league.
i think if he was treated better by fans he would be more tempted to sign up and fight for his place. unfortunately if i were him i would leave: probably not first choice next year, having had a great season holding together hba and willo, pretty average prem wages and abused by fans. why the hell would he stay eh.

      (Quote)

  48. Excuse me for my ignorance but how would we be allowed to approach a player to see if it is CL that they want before their club says yes?

      (Quote)

  49. Solano-Yeah agree completely, and given how Perch and Raylor have been he probably could have covered both wings like, his hustling and pace were his main attributes so he’d be less reliant on his left/right hand side anyway you’d assume…

But yeah can’t see him staying, he’s been constantly slated and Perch now a hero must be frustrating. Maybe he should have just played **** for us on purpose when we signed him, then upped it and we’d have given him a brazilian name as well? 🙄 😆

      (Quote)

  50. We, might be getting it wrong.

That’s as far as we will go.

      (Quote)

  58. You’re right Sharpy. I wish they would hurry up with Debuchy and Douglas, if that’s who they’re really after.
If there’s one area you really want your players to have time to gel before the season starts, its in defense.
I think if they want to mess about getting deals done the area we can most afford to do that in is for forwards. I don’t see that as being a priority really. We could even wait until January for another forward.

  59. Debuchy`s manager at Lille is saying he wants to keep him for another season, and bring some youngster on , under his wing. Also on talk sport Reading have finished their transfer buisness with the signing of Marriappa. Who i think will be another good signing for them. So the moral is we keep Simpson for the season, Spend the money on Carroll and Douglas and buy Debuchy next season when Simpsons contract runs out. Easy peasy.

  60. Toonsy I don’t think we have got our priorities wrong or hope not anyway, im sure we must be trying to get other players in, and its just that the Carroll one has flew because of the links we had with him.
But I just wish we would hurry up and get the players in to give them time to settle.
But if the stories about our bids for Debouchy and Douglas are close to the real bids well then I don’t think we have a chance of getting them for that.

JJ I think the LDG was just a piece of **** as im sure they ( Carr) would have none he had no interest in us

Newkie where did you hear that Saylor was on £50 k because I have never heard that figure being mentioned and I would be pretty sure that he wouldn’t be on anywhere near that money ❓

  61. I was really bummed today when Clyne seem to Sign for Southampton. Thats a real drag along with De jong I just feel all sinked in the bay right now. The other thing is that the press build up all the transfers on another way than last summer. Then we just suddenly had the player in town signing. Now that the papers talk about all the changes it seems nothing is accurate just speculation. We need more bodies on the field for next season. Do not think that the youngsters manage the european campain. We need experienced players on those positions so that we can have our 60 games next year and hopefully a throphy. Get Debuchy, Douglas, Cissoko, Anita so that the Defence shapens up.. HWTL……

  62. Debuchy has supposedly made it very clear that he wants to leave, so I would imagine the club will be happy to offload him once someone offers a reasonable fee, no matter what the manager says he wants.

  63. PAULMAG Debouchy has allready said he wasn’t interested in staying for another yr so cant see him wanting to hang around till next yr or I can’t see lille wanting to keep an unhappy player

  64. Big Dave I know its all speculation. Modric wanted to leave Spuds last season, but they managed to keep him and im sure theres others, but i cannot think of any. But cheers for replying.

  65. Just posted my reply, then went on the previous post and read the comments and came across the the one and only Craig Chisholm who seems to only down on everything, what is wrong with you man,you have a negative spin on everything that comes on here.Where has it been quoted OFFICIALLY that we have bid any money for any player,NUFC do not do business in the open, have you not learnt anything yet.You reckon we have bid **** money for certain players,WHY? just because you read it on some **** site. You also say we are the only team to have been weakened, the only players to go so far are the ones that did not play last season or would not play this season, none of our top players are leaving, believe me Craig we have everything in place to move upwards,we are getting stronger, have faith bonny lad,if your not happy then go and spout your negativity somewhere else

  66. the Mildge I know what you mean. Thats why i posted an earlier comment to go on the nufc website and see how happy and united the squad are. Its certainly not all doom and gloom like some people think. Reference to white water rafting. I defy anyone to look at those photos and not be cheered
