Don’t call time on Debuchy…… yet!

Will Lille really be able to stand in the way of Debuchy?
As reported by ArchieMag earlier on today, it appears that Lille have put the block on Mathieu Debuchy and his move to Newcastle United.

Now I wonder if that is a wise move, but for whatever reasons (more than likely financial) Lille have decided to go against the wishes of the player and have decided that he will stay with Lille.

However I have a sneaking suspicion that this won’t be the last we hear of a deal for the French international and I still remain confident that he will end up at Newcastle by the end of the transfer window. For this to happen though the player must now try and force things through on his part if he wants the move he claims he so desperately wants.

Indeed Debuchy has already gone on record to register his disdain over the decision of Lille President Micel Seydoux.

“My desire is to leave,” Debuchy confirmed to L’Equipe. “I’m 100 per cent decided. I want to leave Lille. I’ve called Seydoux and left him a message. I’m waiting for him to call me back to clarify the situation.”

“I don’t understand it. One day, they tell me I can’t leave because they haven’t got a replacement for me. The next, it’s because Newcastle’s offer isn’t enough,” said Debuchy.

“One day, it’s the coach who’s blocking me, the next, it’s the president. I get the feeling that everyone isn’t in agreement.”

“Today, I am still resolved to trying something new, to have another experience, and I would like to have a talk with the chairman for things to be clear between us. I’m close to Yohan, and I followed his season. Now I have the chance to play in the best league in the world.”

Player power means a lot these days, even more than contracts seemingly. Generally seeking if a player wants out then they get the move they desire in the end. Notable exceptions are few and far between and no doubt people will cite Luka Modric as an example of a board keeping a player who wants to leave, but ask Tottenham fans if they feel that they’ve had the best of Luka Modric since it emerged he wanted to leave White Hart Lane and I bet you’ll find the answer is no.

The same could be true for Debuchy who clearly wants to leave his current employers, who are playing a dangerous game and risk retaining an unhappy on their books – a counterproductive move if ever there was one.

Of course I’m not saying that Lille should just roll over for us but at the end of the day we’ve been tracking him for a long time now and will have offered a value that reflects his true worth and not a value which has been inflated by oodles of press speculation plus a good couple of international appearances over the summer – appearances that wouldn’t have materialised but for a broken leg suffered by Bacary Sagna.

This saga may appear closed, but I very much doubt it is…

  1. Kim stop complaining you can’t expect Jabba to waste his money by paying going rates on players, we need to be clever and try to screw clubs to save us a few quid, and if we start to pay the going rate for players then all clubs will be holding out when we come in for their players. be grateful he has saved us from going down the tubes 😆

  2. Kimtoon-exactly…especially if Carr is scouting players that we’ll be able to sell on for a profit-which in all likelihood we will be. Surely its in Ash’s favour to spend some money now and sell later. Speculate to accumulate and all that 😉

“Your anagrams are showing, Doctor Stavers.”

Mind you if Aussie is annoyed its probably because that man-sausage one didnt even use all the letters properly. 😕

You could have insinuated exactly the same thing with either of these AND used the letters properly:

    “If **** semi-agape….?”
    or
    “I amuse a *** *****”

  4. In all seriousness I like the fact that we don’t spend silly money on transfer fees as it’s better for the clubs long term stability .BUT there is a time when being cash savvy can cost you a decent player for the sake of an extra million or so ,let’s face it we ain’t talking 12 ,15 or 20 million here are we.

  5. I think playing football manager has actually had quite an affect on how I view real football in terms of transfers-I like paying as little as we can and getting a good deal for monetary terms in that sense-but also the weight of a big transfer can lead to all kinds of pressure. If we spend low there’s less expectation and more space to breathe for both the player and management.

  6. Newkie ,well yeah there is that .

I’m still confused as to what Lille actually want for him as I’m bloody sure I read that they wanted 8m euros at the start of the window and we bid 4m 🙄 which equates to around £3.1 million ,which is low for a French international. Apparently they now want 10 million Euros 😯 If that’s all true then they have indeed moved the post. Will keep trying to track down where I read it as it was linked to a comment from Lilles chairman as well. It’s entirely possible my minds playing tricks on the figures such has this saga been going on for everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrzzzzzzzzzzz..

  8. Kimtoon- I assumed it was 8mil euros they were after, always has been and still is, that’s about £6.5mil isn’t it? but we’re only bidding the equivalent of 6mil euros..

    Thinking of you too..
    Love Aussie 🙂

  11. Don’t be too hard on them, Oz. Pootle beavered away with his thesaurus for 2 days to come up with that effort, and Troy, well, he obviously doesn’t know that you are supposed to use ALL the letters in an anagram 😆

I wondered about a suitable anagram for Pootle, btw, but decided that Pootle is a silly enough name anyway. 😆

Poor old Rodz, he had to spell it out twice before Troy realized he had missed out the I. Which is funny because it is Troys’ favourite letter. Every time he posts, it’s always – “I am, I will , I could, I think, I would, I, I ,I ,I 😕

  13. Not sure I agree that we’re down 4-5 players. Guthrie is a loss for sure, but not sure we’ll miss him much with the little I’ve seen of Abeid, Almalifitano and Bigirimana. I don’t count Loven and Best as losses since I’m not sure they even really played once Cisse came. Tavs is someone we didn’t have last year since he was out on loan and of course Marv and Staylor due to injury. Give me a striker and CB yet and I’d say we are looking ready and would be far stronger than last year IMO.

Where’s Fergie been by the way?

  15. Well, seeing as it’s quiet this morning I think I’ll add a comment…

MDS, the way I see it is at the end of last season, before anyone left, we needed at least a ‘proven’ CB and a FB (right or left, that depends on where Pardew is planning on playing Santon/Jonas). Adding these two players to the squad would have given us a bit of security playing the PL season out. Ideally we’d bring in 4 or 5 (2 or 3 provens and 2 or 3 youngsters) given the extra European matches, but 2 or 3 were what we were short of, in my eyes.

    Since then we’ve lost:
SMITH (I won’t count him cos he was past it)
    BEST (useful as cover)
    LOVENKRANDS (useful as cover)
    GUTHRIE (useful as cover)

    …but we’ve gained:
    TAVERNIER (useful as cover)
AMALFITANO (useful as cover from what I’ve seen of him)
BIGRIMANA (useful as cover from what I’ve seen of him)
GOOD (who knows, but I’d expect him not to be ready for first team)

…so the way I see it, we haven’t really moved forward with regards to transfers INS. We’re lighter up front, and still light at the back. I guess we’ve got ‘new’ cover for RB and CB, but squad-wise I think we’re still 2 or 3 ‘proven players’ short, minimum. Although 4 or 5 would be a more comfortable number to add.

We definitely still need a couple of defenders, and ideally another striker. I don’t class the latter as of much importance due to our wealth of midfielders who can attack I.E. Barfa, Marveaux, Sammy, Abeid and Vuckic (not sure about him).

That’s my take on it anyway.

(no doubt Toonsy will post a new article up now) 😆

      (Quote)

  17. Rodz I see your point but all our outs were proven experienced prem players, at least 3 of the 4 new ones were in Pards own words for the future, so imo we have just added them to the potential younguns group, so are still way short

  18. Is this posturing by Pardew or the real deal? If so, maybe no Debuchy after all…

“I don’t like to think we have a ‘B’ list. It’s an ‘A’ list and sometimes it’s just whether all the ingredients are there. If that isn’t working, you just go to another name on the ‘A’ list. Trust me, there’s not many names on it – there’s two or three in each position in all honesty. All of those players would take us forward.”

  21. In my opinion, though it’s nice to improve the first team, it isn’t crucial like some back up is. so in reality it doesn’t matter when in the window the players arrive as they won’t be needed to fling into the first team anyway.
Players like raylor and perch deserve another season as squad players after last year i think. so if the board said simmo and santon were our full backs this season with tavernier and raylor as back ups i’d begrudgedly accept. obviously raylor isn’t a.left back but he certainly played his part for us there last year.

Centre back is the absolute necessity. We can’t go in short of cover, short on quality i can handle and be patient but.last year was a shambles putting people like Simpson at cb.

  24. I know we’ve lost some players, but to be honest i’d much rather rely on the inexperienced players like Ammy, Biggy and Tav than the proven players like Smith and Lovenkrands. No disrespect to them, but they never really cut it in the PL, whereas these young lads definitely have the potential to.

The only real big miss is Guthrie and Best to a degree if we don’t get someone in.

    …but held myself back 😯 😆

I saw that Northern Echo link too. I said yesterday I doubt we’re pissing around and wasting time by only pursuing 1 (Debuchy) or 2 (Carroll) players. We’ll have our grubby mits in plenty of pies I’m sure. Whether or not we can pull out a juicy plum is anyone’s guess.

Solano, I agree with you at 106, and fear I probably will with 104 too, come the end of the transfer window.

Dave, I think as far as long-term improvement goes, we’ve stepped forward, but short term we’ve stepped back.

  26. When all of the smoke screens, skullduggery, false calls, blather jobs, media speculation is put to one side, we ARE short of a couple of seasoned pros to add to the squad.

The future DOES look bright, with quite a few promising junior players looking to break into the first team squad this season.

However, as fans we need to be convinced that the punters in charge of the club are doing there best to placate the fans, but most importantly the current management team and players currently at the club.

Of course the manager is going to tell the media he’s relaxed about things, but we know the real world may look somewhat different… I only hope the owners will back the manager to the full, at the end of the day he won all the management prizes last season, so must know something about footy…

      (Quote)

  27. Rodz, I think a fairer comparison is with the squad as we started last season, rather than how we ended it. There is no doubt we are stonger this time round. However it is fair that we have more games this season and hence some extra bodies are needed. Looking at our starting 11 a few places could be realistically strengthened, and the names we are linked with would as Pardew said take us forward. As to targets we went from 46 to 65 pts last season. Consolidation at 60+ would be good. Staying in Europe a priority. There are 6 clubs with more resources than us. Hopefully given our management we can still finish amongst them.

  28. agree with newkie @110

Liked Guthrie but the lad has gone for the right reasons. Im expecting Gosling to start showing his ability this year. He times his runs into the box well, He could be a decent goalscoring midfielder in time…

  29. I see we are being linked to Malaga MF Jeremy Toulalan now, apparently we have made enquiries. I also saw Spurs are after Rondon their forward and hope to land him for £8m .

      (Quote)

  30. CC regarding Gosling, I still get the impression that the games pass him by. I think he’s a player in the Danny Guthrie mould, whereas Danny was better… 🙁

      (Quote)

  31. Kimtoon, Malaga are getting rid of everybody cos they have gone bankrupt I believe. A few seasons ago they took Van Nistelroy, and also the FC Bayern Argy centre half Demichelis. Toulalan is in a similar mould, has a lot of Champs League experience, done it all at Lyon I believe. He’d be a canny signing for the toon and would add authority to midfield. He’d be a player who would go straight into the team imo… but his age may be against him…there again, if the price is right, and he talks the official NUFC lingo too… 😉

      (Quote)

  32. We should go in for Rondon for that kinda money…Toulalan though, I imagine he’s already on pretty big wages there…

      (Quote)

  33. Prem@113, yeah that’s a fair comment I suppose. We have ‘gained’ a few since the start of last season through younger player progression and injury recoveries I.E. Saylor, Marveaux, Barfa, Tavernier, Gosling and Abeid. But it’s that ‘new player’ that isn’t a new player thing that I don’t buy into. My main cause for concern is the extra fixtures and pressure this season will bring, and the likely fatigue and injuries that go with it.

Anyway, I’ve got to nip off now. Get my other bike fixed so I have transport after the lowlife cnt nicked my good one on Wednesday.

    Laters gators……. 😎

Guthries tidier on the ball no doubt but i think Gosling could be a bit like Nolan. His anticipation is good he just needs to start finishing better when the chances come.

If they could get Toulalan for a decent price they should look past his age, They did say they would make the odd exception although they might have gone back on that after the impact Fat Sol and Kuqi had… 🙄

      (Quote)

  35. Toulalan is 28 yrs old , good player but do we really need more MFplayers?.
Re .Rondon I mentioned him yesterday to Andy ,knowing Malaga’s position he could be a bargain at £8m or so .He’s scored 25 goals in 67 appearences. I do think he will go to spurs though .

      (Quote)

  36. Guthrie’s problem was that he was so much like Cabaye but basically worse in every way, and not really much younger despite the fact people often called him young.

Gosling is actually a fair bit younger, but his style is also very different and whilst that means he can’t fill the hole left by Cabaye if we do lose him to injury or something, he can at least offer something different to the side. He just needs a run of games and imo he’ll come good.
