Sloppy seconds! Newcastle United 0-3 Manchester United

Evra makes it two!
Newcastle deservedly lost at St James’ Park this afternoon as goals from Johnny Evans, Patrice Evra and Tom Cleverley handed the Red Devils a 3-0 victory.

I’ve been trying to think hard for positives to come out of the game today and I just can’t. People will no doubt blame tactics like they are the be all and end all of everything, but to me that is taking a fair portion of the blame away from those responsible for this result.

I’ve said many times that I can handle defeat. I’m not one of these that will spit the dummy and get all reactionary over a result. I do however have one very simple expectation, and that is that the players who wear the black and white stripes give it all they’ve got. That’s why some of the “lesser lights” of the history of NUFC are my favourite players, because they gave everything. Today at least, not one of them did and for that they should be embarrassed.

To stand any chance of beating Manchester United you have to be on it from the word go and the Newcastle players just weren’t. Tactics, tiredness, motivation or just plain poor performance, or perhaps even a combination of all of them, ensured that Manchester United soon asserted themselves on the game.

Danny Welbeck should have put the away side ahead within five minutes but his shot from a Michael Carrick backheel was scuffed straight at Steve Harper from 12 yards out. That should have woken the home side up, but it didn’t and just three minutes later Manchester United were ahead courtesy of a thumping header from Johnny Evans who lost Mike Williamson at the corner.

Just four minutes later there was nearly more embarrassment for the hosts when Steve Harper decided not to clear Mike Williamson’s backpass. Under pressure from Danny Welbeck, Harper lost possession allowing Welbeck a shot at an empty net which fortunately rolled wide of the goal.

With 15 minutes gone Harper was once again called into action as Wayne Rooney fired a freekick towards goal that Harper palmed wide. However from the resulting corner the away side made it 2-0 through Patrice Evra who was allowed a free run at goal after being ignored by Jonas Gutierrez. The French fullback stole in at the near post and nodded past a helpless Harper.

It wasn’t until 18 minutes that Newcastle managed to get their first sight of goal with Jonas Gutierrez flashing a shot wide of goal from 20-yards which seemed to signal some form of fightback from the real United. Ba fired over from a Yohan Cabaye corner whilst Cabaye himself fired a drive over the bar. Further chances for Gutierrez, Ben Arfa and Cisse followed although none of them were exactly guilt-edged as half-time loomed.

Half-time: Newcastle United 0-2 Manchester United

Newcastle had to do something in the second half if they were to find a way back into the game, and they very nearly did within five minutes of the restart. Shane Ferguson lofted a cross into the box which David de Gea flapped at before Demba Ba headed against the crossbar. The rebound fell nicely for Papiss Cisse who headed towards goal only to see the Manchester United ‘keeper claw the ball away from behind the line.

To me it looked over the line in real time, but TV replays have shown that it might not have been the case. The rules state that the whole of the ball must be over the the whole of the line and to me, on closer inspection, that didn’t seem to be the case and, begrudgingly yet correctly in my view, nothing was given. If it was it might have been a different game…

Newcastle had their spell of dominance and Manchester United soon reasserted themselves. Demba Ba nodded wide for the home side while Wayne Rooney and Tom Cleverley spurned chances for the away side. Robin van Persie then found the back of the net but was correctly judged offside. That happened on 65 minutes and just six minutes later the game was put beyond any doubt when Tom Cleverley’s shot found the top corner of Steve Harper’s net. Cross or shot? I don’t really care to be honest. It counted and that was that.

The game pretty much petered out from then on with everyone involved with the home side feeling deflated. Mind you the blame lies firmly in our court for starting off so slowly. You just can’t do that against Manchester United and they made us pay by pretty much killing the game off in the opening 15 minutes.

Up next, a two week international break, followed by THE derby.

  1. The Kid – I agree with you. For all it’s great that Ba is scoring, Pardew has to set his team up to suit 11 players not just 1.
Sir Alex showed that today with Rooney. He is a 20+ goals a season striker, but Fergie has played him further back to link the play up rather than that poaching goal scorer role that would get him the goals. Fergie obviously sees that helping RVP and that’s the big picture.
When Ba played left of the front 3 last season he still got scoring opportunities, and would again, he just needs to convert them, which he didn’t last season.
Got to play to our strengths not be held to ransom.

Anyway, I’m off peeps – sleep well all 😉

  2. Kimtoon-Probably because he wasn’t “utter ****” in all of them. I know he wasn’t scoring, but I think it’s quite harsh to say that. He lost his touch and form but he still did his running, defending, creating-just as you are saying about Cisse now.

I think they promised him to play there because Pards envisioned 4-3-1-2. Previously he said he saw Benny as a player to play behind the strikers, and that’s where he wanted him, and therefore it would allow both Ba’s to play up front. There’s a number of reasons why that hasn’t happened though.

I do think it was stupid to promise him that and said so at the time. Regardless of that it’s just as well he is playing up front, because like I said, he’s actually scoring 😉

      (Quote)

  3. The Kid-I agree, nobody played at their best, but Benny was one of the better ones. As usual, there’s a sense of danger when he gets on the ball

  4. Slow start and poor defending. Willo and Perch would be hard pressed to make a defensive pairing in the Championship unfortunately for us. It’s not their fault is it Llambias? Interesting to see Ashley Llambias having a good laugh when we were 3-0 down. They must really care how we play. No wait Ashley was rubbing his hands thinking about the gate receipts with another 52,000 in the park.

  5. Another factor is we were beaten by a superior team. With our defence we were always going to stuggle. I thought we played well in parts and the lads tried hard.. Man U are a well drilled side full of quality right across the park (aside from their Keeper)

  6. I didn’t post right after the game because I was feckin disapointed but after some kip, I can look back at the game without the anger/disapointment bubbling away.I feel I am ready to move on now 🙂 🙂 . We need to work on our set pieces both ends, get our defenders back fit and smash the feckin Mackems when we play them…

  7. I only read through about half the comments, but what undoes us in a 442 is that there is always a huge space between midfield and the forwards when coming out of defending and both of our strikers are making identical runs because they’re the same type of strikers.

  8. Had my text read out on talksport 😎  . So chuffed, especially as the American guy (forgotten his name, John something) said that my (very long) text was very well written 😀 .

  9. *John Kruger
Was on the Messi v Ronaldo debate, John Gould claimed Ronaldo was better cus he had to work harder to establish himself so I wrote
“I understand what your saying about Ronaldo having had the tougher job of coming through as a star. However after fairly recently reading Messi’s biography I’d say Lionel had an extremely tough time, had a physical disability which risked him even becoming a professional player, travelled with only his father to a foreign country and then had to fight his way ahead of all the other promising youths in the Barca academy. He had to get into a team that had Ronaldinho and E’to to name two. That is why I believe he had the tougher experiences to be the top footballer, it wasn’t all cooshy at Barca like has been claimed.”

  10. And formations and strikers can be debated forever, but I think we all know that the squad just did not get clicking until 20 minutes in. I’m with a lot of you in thinking that we should just play a solid 451 to get a good feel for the game for the first 15 minutes. Then after feeling confident on the ball and having an experiential understanding of the opponent to really attack the goal.
It was very entertaining to have Santon and Ferguson as fullbacks today, with both defending very well. This could be a setup that serves as very well against the mackems when Colo, STaylor, and Krul will thankfully be back to solidify our backline.

Cabaye has still not really impressed me too much. He did do some things well, but he was mostly average. This needs to be addressed, especially since we dont really have anyone in line to replace him effectively. Possibly Marveaux??

  11. the reason we see young players get moved around a lot is to fill in injuries etc ….when a young player signs his new deal he is told he will get x amount of games in the season ,the manager has to honor that ,its not just a case of your good so you can play there. the manager and staff have to juggle playing time for players.

Just read your previous thread. Good article fella. You’ve picked up all your opinions from me very well indeed. 😉

  13. Early goals killed us, Williamson and Perch give their all and have played no small part in the last couple of years but like plenty of others they are found wanting against top class opposition, Hand on heart dont believe wed have conceded from those set pieces with Colo and Saylor playing.

A Centre half was top priority i (and many others) said it all summer and although i love Bigi and Anita but did we really need two holding midfield players at a cost of £8m+ when we could have had the classy centre half we need for about £6m ??

On the bright side im expecting Krul, Colo, Saylor and Simpson to be ready for the mackems and now weve got this out of the way we have some seriously winnable fixtures coming up, We have played four of the top 5 in the first 7 matches and were still in the top half within a win of the european spots its not all bad…

  14. Newkie my “utter **** ” comment was really about his lack of scoring not all round play ,I should of made that clearer. I will say though that at times he was very selfish trying to shoot /score when a pass was by far the better option and many others made such comments during games if memory serves me. Cisse does at least try to score when he has a legitimate chance rather than fail to pass it to someone better placed. Don’t get me wrong I totally understand why it happened as he was desperate to get a goal and would add it is great that he has 6 for us this season,I just wish the pair could be successfull at the same time 😉 ,it’s beyond frustrating .

It’s no small coincidence either that Harper is in the nets instead of Krul.

Krul saved us many points last season and Harps is clearly past his best and his best was never up to Krul’s standard.

      (Quote)

  18. Troy ,Willo just isn’t in the same class as Colo and Saylor ,he’s o.k for lesser oposition but falls short against an assured attack imo ,his lack of being able to clear from a corner /set piece is poor compared to Saylor who is great at it. So odd that such a tall lad can’t clear with his head and he constantly climbs all over the oposition putting us at risk of concedeing a pen .

      (Quote)

  19. Kim, great to see  We were just beaten by a better team… sure the set pieces cost us but Man U played well. I thought Jonas had a really good game for us tho, ran his **** off for us…
We are going to lose games this season, no point getting to riled up by losses, they happen to the best teams 😉

Troy, nice to see you managed to make my article about you 😉 Very out of character 😆 😆 Thanks for the kind part of your post tho 😉

      (Quote)

  20. Aussie, In my heart I knew we wouldn’t win ,they are dangerous opo anyway let alone after getting beat by Spuds and wanting revenge for our thrashing them last season 😉 The important thing now is that lessons are learnt from our poor starts to games as I will be miffed if we start like that Vthe Mackems. We should hopefully have our first choice CB pair back and hopefully Simmo too for that one. Thank god for the international break I say.

      (Quote)

  21. I agree with Troy@91 😉 and CC@92
The first 15 minutes was a nightmare but for spells we played ok but our finishing wasn’t up to much unfortunately, probs should have had a pen but we’ve had a bit of luck in previous games so can’t really complain…..beat the filthy inbreds in a couple of weeks and everything will be hunky dory

      (Quote)

  22. Yeah, me too Kim, I was hoping for a win but deep down I knew it would be a stretch with the back line we put out.. Man U near on had a full strength team other than Vidic’ missing.
Yep bring on the Mackems and lets hope we have a full compliment of players available for selection 😀

      (Quote)

  23. We all talk about missing out on Debuchy but one I’m most pissed about us missing out on at such a minimal cost was Neil Taylor.

I think he is a cracking little player for Swansea. Him on the left and Santon on the right would have been sublime.
Instead we seem to have wasted 6mil on Anita.

Anita may be a neat little player but he just gets bullied off the ball far too easily.
Obviously he may come right but where as they others showed glimpses of potential, he has shown nothing. In fact, I can’t see him making the side ahead of Bigi who cost us 1/6th of the price.

  24. troy

Harpers reactions were sharp enough against reading and norwich. His kicking has never been great, If you are referring to the welbeck incident. Agreed hes not as good as krul but hes a solid back up. The sort of solid back up we are crying out for at centre half.

    Kim

Agree totally on Willo. He does well against a certain standard of oppostion like he did against Bordeux, Same with perch but yesterday was a bridge too far. Not their fault they just came up against superior players who punish the slightest mistake.

  25. **** me and they call us deluded 😆 😆
“So many lads that have never seen 90 minutes of live football in their life saying Fletcher is average. I’ve seen and played plenty of football and he is far from a one-note goalscorer. Got it all, far as I can see – great touch, strong, clever, good finisher in the box.
He reminds me of, controversially of Cantona” 😯 😆

      (Quote)

  26. JJ, it’s a bit early to call time on Anita… Modric used to get bullied early on and he weighs about 2 stone ringing wet…. give him time and he will come good..

      (Quote)

  27. Kim..That’s a quote from a mackem, I was referring to him comparing him to Cantona 😉 ……he’s decent, but he’s just on a good run at the moment, hopefully that’s come to an end now…imo he’s an average player(hopefully I’m right  )

      (Quote)

  28. Also Sharpy

Please don’t use the excuse “most sides would have struggled against Manure the first 25 minutes” – thats nonsense. We were pathetic. We conceded goals with primary school errors in defence.

If it was a once off against a top team like Man United, then fair enough. It’s not. We have been battered in every single game in the first half.

Many say you can’t blame Pardew for the players lack of trying. I do.

If you are a manager of CEO or foreman and your staff are not performing then you should take the blame for not getting them to play to their ability.

For me we simply have far too many players that don’t know their role. Our set pieces both defending and attacking are horrible and we have no passing game to speak of.

The tactics used are **** poor and we have relied on individual skill to pull us through games. That and luck.

Our coaching staff did a good job last season but they are getting things seriously wrong this time around.

Why is the gap between our defense and attack so big. There is usually a good 20m between our highest midfielder and our strikers. What does that result in… HOOF BALL.

Ben Arfa should be playing behind the striker/s to fill that gap.

We have absolutely no width apart from Santon when he gets forward. Even then he has to cross with his weaker foot or cut in which results in the attacking move losing its flow and the opposition defence can get back into position.

The only excuse I can find for Pardew is in defence where he really doesn’t have much option. But instead of accepting this, he tries to compensate by forsaking our attacking play…

This doesn’t help the defence, it just means we play in our own half which puts our **** defenders under even more pressure.

We have no outlet in attack and therefore just hoof it back to the opposition.

In my honest opinion, no team has played worse football than us in the Premier League this season.

I havn’t given up on Anita. He deserves a season to come good. Just like Gosling for me deserves a run of games to come good and find confidence.

Its just that for me, I struggle to see what Anita’s strengths are supposed to be. That’s my worry. I guess time will tell…

  31. Aussie,

I’m talking about the style of football not the ability. There isn’t a team that has played more long balls than us in the league this year.

That stat came from NUFC Stats, and I think with players of our ability that is just not good enough.

      (Quote)

  32. To be fair Rich i think hes decent fletcher but in a team that creates as little as they do he’ll do well to keep scoring the rate he is. If Colo is marking him theres one winner imho

They obviously have had slim pickings when it comes to quality players on wearyside thats why there are going overboard, They maintain until they are blue in the face that sooper dooper kev was better than shearer because he once got the european golden boot. They fail to mention that was the only time he got anywhere near twenty goals in a top flight season 🙄 😆

  33. One more thing while I’m off loading…

Am I the only one it pisses off that despite using “goal line technology” to prove Cisse’s head just crossed the line.
Everyone is saying that you cannot blame the linesman for not giving the goal.

While I actually agree with this. Why was it such a shocking decision to not allow Everton’s goal against us, when the evidence was exactly the same. The situations are almost identical yet Everton was robbed and we weren’t.

It unreal how bias everyone is towards teams like Man United. Hate the bastards.

      (Quote)

  34. Well, settled down after yesterdays display so will comment calmly and try to be honest think the team are taking the threat of WONGA to heart and giving out gifts I try not to criticise any one in black and white but WTF was harper doing,Willo was marking shadows and Tiote was a loose cannon. You cannot give a team like man u 20 minutes and then turn up for the party Fergie and Santon looked decent,Perchinio and Gutti never stopped. Man utd’s play shows the holy trinity why we need some sensible sustainable investment,What yesterday proved we do not have the players for 442 we’ve no plan B, everyone knows who our best eleven are, and if they’re fit they’re in, that makes us predictable because of a lack of depth. While we piled on some pressure and looked reasonable they always seemed comfortable when they played football and there movement was a pleasure to watch if you were a neutral , Unfortunately as my seat is in the leazes end I am not a neutral.Rant over bring on the makems.

      (Quote)

  35. JJ im sure you feel better now after getting all that outta your system 😆
On the was it wasn’t it goal for me it wasn’t fully over the line but as even SAF said he would be dissappointed not to get it, but until goal line tech comes in it will continue. As for Evra pulling Cisse shirt well I can’t complain for getting a pen because Willo gets away with that a couple of times a game.

      (Quote)

  36. Big Dave,

Sky used the goal line technology which showed the ball just over the line. I guess they still need to work on it then.

  37. CC….he’s ok but he isn’t a regular 20 goal a season man…just in a good vein of form at the mo…imo of course 😉

      (Quote)

  38. JJ…..how could they use “the” goal line technology when it isn’t in place yet? ….or do you mean they used a computer program that used the available camera angles to predict where the ball was 😉

  45. JJ I watched Sky aswell and from all angles and they said it wasn’t fully over the line, but as I said even SAF agreed that he would be a bit miffed if he didn’t get it.
But we shouldn’t be counting on a ref to help us out , we need to do it for ourselfs.

  48. Big Dave, Richie

I don’t know if we get different pictures.
But they had a sort of Hawk Eye technology that showed an animation of where the ball had crossed the line. That animation showed the ball had just crossed the line.

I don’t know if you get the same visuals but it was from Sky.

      (Quote)

  49. I saw the same footage as JJ. I was watching on Turksport in a pub in Durham. There was only a midgie’s **** in it but the whole of the ball was definitely over the line. What was equally as disappointing was the position the linesman took up. If he was level with the posts he might have been able to give it. As it was he was completely unsighted.

      (Quote)

  50. JJ….I know what you mean mate, just saying it is still based on computer predictions from available camera angles……hawkeye is one of the 2 systems that will be used(possibly) and is based on cameras positioned around the goal(I believe) maybe even in the bar and posts, but those aren’t in place/use yet 😉

      (Quote)

  51. In regards to the goal , if the linesman isnt 100% sure he cant give the goal. Harsh and all as it is on us that is truth of it. If that had been given maybe we would of got something out of the game. But we really need Colo and Krul back for the scum game in 2 weeks.

      (Quote)

  52. My idea was discarded by FIFA, it was that once a ball crosses the line it should explode, no margin for error and the decision is instantaneous unlike all the other proposals….genius I say

  53. very dissappointed yet again with our performance ❓ or lack of yesterday.
we dont know how to press the ball and end up chasing shadows. Really embarrassing. Manures passing was sublime, yet so simple. Everytime we got the ball, they were on us, they gave us no time to think or anything.
But when manure had possession, we are too slow to close them down, they move and have plenty passing options, all the time. We ended up panic passing, which generally ended up with us giving the ball away in the centre of the park.
Our passing and moving is hopeless. We dont antisipate a pass, but wait for it to happen, then react. Clueless. Ball watching on set pieces, another joke. Manures movement at set pieces had us tied up in knots.
Willo waiting for the ball to come to him and getting out jumped by the smallest player on the pitch. Utter shyte.
From where I sit in the Gallowgate, it was cringeworthy. Men against boys.
As for tactics ❓ what was the game plan ❓ Headless chickens could play better.
Alan Pardew has been shown up by a far greater manager than he will ever be. Simples.
We try to start every game at such a slow tempo, like we have lead boots on or something. Manure were quite simply awesome in the first 15-20 mins. We were our usual pathetic selves.
So so dissappointed, as I am not seeing any improvements.
I know we have injury woes and player shortages etc and I’m no expert, but I honestly feel AP is at his ceiling, and can give no more. His team set up is one dimensional, his tictacs non existant.
All I see now is wing and a prayer football. Hoping for a little touch of magic from one player or another. This will never work against a good top 6 side, who have clearly done their homework on us, set out their stall with a gameplan to kill us off early.
Cant see anything but a bottom half finish this season. 😥

      (Quote)

  54. 2 yrs on and our problem is still the defence.
    1. Ferguson is NOT a LB. He makes a far better LW
    2. Santon is no better on the right. He has never played there for us since he arrived. Why now ❓
    3. Perch is NOT a CB. far better as DMF. I would play him rather than Tiote who is a loose cannon and out of control. (a ****** liability imo 👿 )
    4. Willo is NOT a PL quality player. End of.
    5. Colo is small for a CB. I do rate him tho as he has a cool head and reads the game well. He needs a a tall, strong, quality CB alondside him tho..
    6. S Taylor is so injury prone, that he has become unreliable. Also, he cant control his elbows, which annoys the **** out of me.
    7. Ryan Taylor is NOT a LB, but done ok with Jonas helping him out.
    8. Never thought I’d say it, but we miss Simpson. Especially on the line at set pieces. 😯 Yeah he’s not the best RB, (cant tackle 👿 ) but he has been consistent and reliable and does his best.
    9. We need more and better quality defenders. Its as simple as that. A solid, reliable defence is the foundation on which the rest of the team is built. We have got to get it right, or the flair players will never get the chance to express themselves properly.
Well thats how I feel anyways.

      (Quote)

  55. forgot to add, GK. Harps was very poor yesterday. imo. His reaction time has slowed dramatically. We need TK back asap. I honestly think he would have saved 1 or 2 of those goals yesterday. The 3rd was just a fluke and unsaveable. But once again, the lad was unmarked in space. we never closed him down and he had time and space to make his cross/shot thing.

      (Quote)

  56. JJ – I wasn’t making excuses mate, if you read on you’ll see that I have questioned Pardew and the players. What I was trying to do was bring a balance to it abit. People come on and kick off at how rubbish the players were – all I was pointing out was that Man U started really strong and, yes the goals they scored were sloppy, but they could have been 3-4 up in that period. But I’m certainly not excusing the players, who started far too slow yet again.
