Sloppy seconds! Newcastle United 0-3 Manchester United

Evra makes it two!
Newcastle deservedly lost at St James’ Park this afternoon as goals from Johnny Evans, Patrice Evra and Tom Cleverley handed the Red Devils a 3-0 victory.

I’ve been trying to think hard for positives to come out of the game today and I just can’t. People will no doubt blame tactics like they are the be all and end all of everything, but to me that is taking a fair portion of the blame away from those responsible for this result.

I’ve said many times that I can handle defeat. I’m not one of these that will spit the dummy and get all reactionary over a result. I do however have one very simple expectation, and that is that the players who wear the black and white stripes give it all they’ve got. That’s why some of the “lesser lights” of the history of NUFC are my favourite players, because they gave everything. Today at least, not one of them did and for that they should be embarrassed.

To stand any chance of beating Manchester United you have to be on it from the word go and the Newcastle players just weren’t. Tactics, tiredness, motivation or just plain poor performance, or perhaps even a combination of all of them, ensured that Manchester United soon asserted themselves on the game.

Danny Welbeck should have put the away side ahead within five minutes but his shot from a Michael Carrick backheel was scuffed straight at Steve Harper from 12 yards out. That should have woken the home side up, but it didn’t and just three minutes later Manchester United were ahead courtesy of a thumping header from Johnny Evans who lost Mike Williamson at the corner.

Just four minutes later there was nearly more embarrassment for the hosts when Steve Harper decided not to clear Mike Williamson’s backpass. Under pressure from Danny Welbeck, Harper lost possession allowing Welbeck a shot at an empty net which fortunately rolled wide of the goal.

With 15 minutes gone Harper was once again called into action as Wayne Rooney fired a freekick towards goal that Harper palmed wide. However from the resulting corner the away side made it 2-0 through Patrice Evra who was allowed a free run at goal after being ignored by Jonas Gutierrez. The French fullback stole in at the near post and nodded past a helpless Harper.

It wasn’t until 18 minutes that Newcastle managed to get their first sight of goal with Jonas Gutierrez flashing a shot wide of goal from 20-yards which seemed to signal some form of fightback from the real United. Ba fired over from a Yohan Cabaye corner whilst Cabaye himself fired a drive over the bar. Further chances for Gutierrez, Ben Arfa and Cisse followed although none of them were exactly guilt-edged as half-time loomed.

Half-time: Newcastle United 0-2 Manchester United

Newcastle had to do something in the second half if they were to find a way back into the game, and they very nearly did within five minutes of the restart. Shane Ferguson lofted a cross into the box which David de Gea flapped at before Demba Ba headed against the crossbar. The rebound fell nicely for Papiss Cisse who headed towards goal only to see the Manchester United ‘keeper claw the ball away from behind the line.

To me it looked over the line in real time, but TV replays have shown that it might not have been the case. The rules state that the whole of the ball must be over the the whole of the line and to me, on closer inspection, that didn’t seem to be the case and, begrudgingly yet correctly in my view, nothing was given. If it was it might have been a different game…

Newcastle had their spell of dominance and Manchester United soon reasserted themselves. Demba Ba nodded wide for the home side while Wayne Rooney and Tom Cleverley spurned chances for the away side. Robin van Persie then found the back of the net but was correctly judged offside. That happened on 65 minutes and just six minutes later the game was put beyond any doubt when Tom Cleverley’s shot found the top corner of Steve Harper’s net. Cross or shot? I don’t really care to be honest. It counted and that was that.

The game pretty much petered out from then on with everyone involved with the home side feeling deflated. Mind you the blame lies firmly in our court for starting off so slowly. You just can’t do that against Manchester United and they made us pay by pretty much killing the game off in the opening 15 minutes.

Up next, a two week international break, followed by THE derby.

Howay the lads!

Just logged back in and expected to have got my **** chewed for my last posting
… nah mate ya safe, we don’t read your posts 😉 😆

It’s because the “proper” banks screwed the world economy and put every fecker into recession, refusing to give out mortgages loans etc to people, then expecting the aforementioned people i.e the taxpayer to bale the feckers out whilst stilling paying their executives millions of £s in bonuses that allowed leech companies like Wonga to make money, all the feckers are as bad as each other…….come the day of the revolution though 😈 😯 😉

I thought you knew that the idiot Tray or whatever his name is on that other site was the nephew of Les Kellet, the wrestler from the ’70s.

He puts up a picture and blabs about it.

    Gone viral apparently… 😆

  7. Big Dave,
Your bromance with Ashley is getting embarrassing. 😳 It’s time you announced your love for him on here because everyone else can see it. 😉
It’s always Ashley this, Ashley that…. sounds like love to me 😆 😆

  8. Aussie-So is Dave just flirting when he constantly reverts to making childish jibes about poor Mike’s weight? You might be onto something there…. 😉

  9. Newkie, I think I am, it’s like back at school where you pick on the girl that you actually really like becasue you are too scared to really approach her and ask her out 😉 😆

  10. On the sponsership thing…. not really seeing where the rage is coming from – Real have BWIN and they are a betting mob and they have probably had a hand in ruining more families than anyone. Like any addiction gambling can no longer be a choice for some people and a company like BWIN takes advantage of that. I also agree with Richie’s assesment of the banks.. They are a bunch of arseholes as well 👿 … Anyway i hope this Wonga thing is BS and the name sounds ****. And as people have noted, it does seem to have a stigma attached to it… I’m hoping that there is a more reputible company out there looking to sponser us. 😕

Stevo someone said Gosling and vuckic were stretchered off 😯

  13. I think Vuckic broke a finger nail and Gosling pulled a hammy while bending down to see if he was ok… Xisco ran on the pitch when he saw two men lying on the floor and thought he was missing out on something…

  14. Newkie….the only thing that has me doubting it’s real is the fact it isn’t surrounded by a couple of hundred sports direct stickers 😆

  15. Urgh.
    I think it’s disgusting.
Gambling comparison is relatively fair, however I’d argue that the majority of people using the websites are fine with the money they’ve lost (obviously not “fine”, eg say I’ll have lost money overall betting but don’t mind as I enjoyed having a flutter).
With Wonga I doubt you’d find anyone that was happy with either the corner they’d been forced into, or the daft and naiive decision they’d made.
Many on here were annoyed that Ashley was allegedly getting “free advertising”, why? Because advertising meant he’d get increased sales. Well if Wonga get increased business through sponsoring us then that is a lot more lives directly ruined as a result.
So the difference between alcohol/gambling sponsors and Wonga is that I believe NOONE derives pleasure from the loan shark parasites but do in the majority of cases of the former.
Tbh I enjoy smoking, with all it’s frenzied stigma and don’t understand why gambling/fast food/alcohol sponsors are allowed either, but that’s a whole other discussion.

  16. It’s quiet on here… Big Dave must be over Mike and Dekka’s, Ice is feeding the birds and trimming bushes, Kim is looking for a half full glass, Troy is arguing with B&B offline, Rodz is working for the man, JJ is trying to comprehend his own tactics and formations and Richie is burning his scone down at the beach 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

  17. What’s everyone’s problem with Wonga? Are they less ethical than Northern Rock who offered 125% mortgages? Oh and then evicted them once they couldn’t pay their mortgage when the cost went up.

Also what a master stroke by renaming St James’ Park , St James’ Park! All the moaning about Wonga and they come up with this! Perfect!

      (Quote)

  18. Stuart there offer is 4,000%+
    Don’t see the difference?
Banks at least try and set there stall by only lending to people with the means to get it back. Obviously that went to trash somewhere down the line, but it’s a lot better then going with the intention of preying on people that have no guaruntee of income.

      (Quote)

  19. Been announced on the club web site, Wonga will also invest in the academy and youth develoment.. check it out..

Don’t banks prey on people without the funds to buy a house, so they have to borrow money off them in order to buy it? If they miss a couple of payments they get eviction letters and by doing what they did NR nearly brought an entire country to it’s knees! Pretty unethical if you ask me.

How many people have lost their jobs because of the actions of banks? I reckon that’s worse than lending someone £100 and wanting £180 back.

      (Quote)

  21. That’s a little dramatic TC… not every one that takes loans are doing it to pay bills or put food on the table. We live in a must have it now society and the act of saving to buy something no longer seems to exist. Credit is out of control and it is a goldmine for places like Wonga and the banks. A lot of problems could be solved by some going without a new I phone or the latest brand of sneakers…

      (Quote)

  22. Solano , the likes of Wonga and the rest of the payday lenders havent played a part in ruining the nation , the nation had been ruined a long time ( banking wise at least ) well before these companies came along. They have found a market and are taking full advantage of it. Yeah it prob is immoral but what isnt? Banking its self his highly immoral and designed to put people into debt for ever. Mortgage is latin for life debt. Credit cards is another scam. If you thought about it hard enough the list is endless for banks. My only concern is with a new sponser is a) How much are they paying a season? and b) how does it look on the jeresy if Im going to buy it or not.

      (Quote)

  23. Banks (at least they are supposed to) perform checks to make sure that people have the employment means to be able to pay the loan back. Wonga don’t.
Banks don’t charge such extortionate fees. Wonga do.
Banks don’t target people persuading them to borrow money for “nights out” and other stupid things that guillable people will fall for. Wonga do.
Not even going to bother having a discussion whether or not Wonga are ethical. That is an objective NO.
The only debate is whether you are happy to ***** yourself out to vultures. I am not. And I’m devastated that we have sold our soul to get our stadium rights back.

      (Quote)

  24. I’m confused…
At first every journo says no stadium sponsorship, now they saying they have bought the naming rights to St James’ too.

Which is it? Also what exactly are they paying us in this deal?

      (Quote)

  25. @Johnno
I’d agree with credit cards in part. but do they agressively target the naive and vulenrable?
Banks aren’t angels, but the difference between them and Wonga is so, so massive.

      (Quote)

  26. Wonga don’t force people to take loans.

If you take out a short term loan, you agree to the terms to paying it back so you can’t blame the corporation. You can only blame yourself if you can’t afford it.

Its like blaming the bookies for being immoral because that give odds which earn them profits, not the gambler, or casinos for that matter.

If you decide to take the option or risk, knowing the implications because they are open in black and white for all to see. There is absolutely nothing immoral about it IMO.

  27. @Aussie
The world is full of stupic, commercial needy people yes. Wonga are exploiting that, and making the situation much worse for these people. It’s immoral.
As i’ve said, i don’t want to get into a debate about whether Wonga are justified in their business. I don’t think that should be in question.

  29. Wonga is a stupid name though, thank goodness they are keeping it St James’ Park.

I would also like to know the figures of the sponsorship, because 8mil a season doesn’t seem like much at all for both shirts and stadium rights.

    Weren’t Virgin Mobile paying more?

How can anyone force or persuade someone to take a loan?

Are you seriously telling me that if someone went to Wonga and said “I need a night out tonight so lend me £100, but I’m not too sure I can pay you back” that Wonga would still lend the money?

      (Quote)

  31. Change a name that has been there for a over a 100 years, then charge some fecker to change it back 😯 😉

      (Quote)

  32. SSN write it that our sponsors are a digital finance company?! 😯 – infact, even when David Craig was breaking the news I don’t remember him saying Wonga – I know that it is, I just don’t get the reluctance to add that piece of information.

I can’t say I’m happy it will be Wonga and won’t be buying a shirt, but being brutally honest, my hatred of Wonga doesn’t run as deep as some and as a toon fan – it is pleasing to have St James Park back.

Wonga aggresively target people, claiming it’s a “lifestyle choice”
Read the two links I posted.
I think some are just convincing themselves Wonga are fine to feel better.
If you’d said football doesn’t have to be responsible for it’s morales you’d have a case. The defending of Wonga is unbelievable though.
    I’m off.

  34. @Stuart.

Why do you think people use Wonga when they’re interest rates are 1000x more than a bank?

“The world is full of stupid, commercial needy people yes. Wonga are exploiting that”.

Mate, there arn’t many companies that don’t exploit it. Should you have to pay 45 pounds to watch a game of footy. Or 45 pounds to buy a replica kit just so that these footballers can be paid ridiculous salaries?

We get lied to in advertisements, with products highlighting the vitamens in their food but they don’t advertise the cancer causing preservatives and flavourants.

We buy jewelry from places like De Beers for thousands despite them exploiting miners who risk their lives to get paid nothing.

If you are going to judge Wonga then judge everyone else.

Here in South Africa there is a bank who disposessed a woman’s house because she couldn’t make payments of R2500 a month.
They auctioned the house and sold it for R1000!!!!!! Now the woman has no house and is still in the same amount of dept.
Why didn’t they just let her raise the money to buy her own house back from the auction then???

Pharmaceutical companies sell drugs that treat symptons but stiffle any progress made in curing diseases because that would cost them profits.

The world is immoral and corrupt and sick! If you look at the bigger picture, Wonga is not that bad.

  40. Kim, I have to correct you there, a past girlfriend I had was the root of all evil 🙂 🙂 🙂

  41. Roy @ 288 , Im not sure a company is allowed to pay in dead bodies if Im honest. I could google it , but Im pretty confident in my answer.

  42. Better to be sponsored by a cigarette company who sells cancer causing products that are proven addictions.
Or alcoholic companies that exploit peoples stress levels by providing a drug that helps us forget and lose inhibitions.

How many rapes, murders, car accidents, broken families and physical abuse does alcohol cause???
Do we blame the company, NO, we blame the individual for not having the control.

Same for Wongo. If you can’t pay it back, don’t take a lone. If you can’t afford to risk money, don’t gamble and if you get aggressive when you drink, don’t drink.

Simple… I’m not saying these corperations are good. But its the world that we live in and as such, we as individuals must exercise our own control. Use our own brains.

    I rest my case. 😆

  44. On the alcohol note, best sponsor we ever had was Newcastle Brown Ale…

Also, Northern Rock, our previous sponsors went broke because they loaned out money that people couldn’t afford to pay back. No???
