Game On! Sunderland v Newcastle

Sunderland's Stadium of Light.

Sunderland's Stadium of Light.
The natives pile in at Sunderland.
It’s here. It’s finally here. The 147th Tyne-Wear derby is almost upon us, and what better way to spend it than on here with over NUFC fans?

Of course you could always argue that being at the game would be better, but with tickets for this one pretty much out of reach for a lot of fans it appears that won;t be the case aside for a lucky 2,500 or so travelling fans.

On the other hand there are plus points when it comes to avoiding a trip to Wearside in person. You won’t pick up any of that stench that emanates from the area and you won’t come face-to-face with the arsehole of humanity that reside in Sunderland. The y really are a “special” bunch!

Banter aside there is more than just a match to be played today. This one is too big to be called “just a game of football”. It matters to too many people in the local area, on both sides of the divide, for it to be called “just another game”.

Last time out we saw that both managers “get it” when it comes to the importance of this fixture. Both Alan Pardew and Martin O’Neill had words during the game and it was an altogether unsavoury incident. However it’s something typifies the passion and intensity this fixture brings with it.

Anyway I don’t need to write much more. Suffice to say that team news will be added below and I dare say that people will leave links to streams in the comments section below. For now though we’ll just have to wait and see how it all pans out.

Howay the lads!

  1. Never in a million years should that have been a red card. He was late (since he was being pulled back!) and caught him. He didn’t jump in. It wasn’t reckless. FFS football is being ruined by these moron referees.

  2. Kim – Ref had no choice really.
    Studs up onto fletchers shin.
Tiote is a fuggin liability imo. Not worth the risk.
gonna be a struggle now 👿

  3. Always a shame when one goes off in a derby as it ruins the game and it always seems to happen too.

  4. Changed the game totally, Tiotes sending off, sooner he’s gone the better, and that trip on Stanton was a yellow all day.

  5. Benny just run through em like a knife through butter 😉
No goal for the slayer today now as Perch on for him.

  6. 91 was for Strolla getting took off, Ash I agree Tiote is a fuking fool, that thinks he’s a hardman but then most of the fans think the same, I just think he’s no better than DeJong, Cattermole, Henry etc and for me he has spoiled this game now

  7. Wasn’t a sraight red but Tiote needs to pull his fucking head in…. he has let his team mates down… gonna be tough now

  8. We’re going to have to hope Benny and Cabaye have good second halves, the counter attack will be vital, we can’t def for a whole half…

  9. ASH1001 – Nah. Just Matt Le Pissier 😉

I think it’s important that this doesn’t turn into a Tiotehunt. He’s a great player 95% of the time. The other 5% he loses his head and that is what could end up costing us. He needs to cut that part out of his game. Not saying he should stop tackling, but he also needs to learn that a ref with a red card record like Atkinson will send people off for high feet and studs showing

  10. My question if anyone can give me an answer:

Why wa Tiote sent off? Surely not because it was high as that would mean Larsson should have gone for his king fu tackle on Strolla. Was it because it was late? Surely not as Gardner would have gone for a late tackle on Santon. Why then?

Not being biased but good grief it was just a late tackle, made by someone off balance becuase he was being fouled himself. The ref has made a complete fck up here!

  11. I hope Atkinson has a good look at the red card from a different angle when the game ends. (Or at half time) But Tiote is becoming a liability that is a fact. His reputation is starting to precede him and he’s becoming like Clattermole.

  12. There seems to be a big hole nw in the midfield after tiote send off..Hardly seen Perch. 😯

  13. Regardless of what you think of Tiote, In any other game that is a yellow at most. This referee is weak and the home crowd are dictating the decisions.

It’s a shame because Ameobi was having a good game.

  14. Tiote was always likely to go in this game ,it’s a shame Catermole ain’t playing then there would be a chance of things being evened up 😉 I also think they are targetting our danger men as Cabaye is getting het up and even Shola got carded ,Benny has two on him now they have the extra man too.

  15. Now Wilkins is saying it was calculated. Hilarious. I wonder if the same would be said had Paul Scholes made that challenge?

“Haha! Look at ol’ Scholesy, still can’t tackle, haha”

    F**king joke!

  16. Agreed Stuart, how it can be high when Larrson was flying around like a bloody ninja is beyond me. They’ve had several late tackles now, when will they be punished for it I wonder?

  17. @Kid – agree with you 100%. I don’t understand why fans on here are slating Tiote. There are 50 tackles like that every weekend in the PL and I bet half of them don’t even get yellow cards.

  18. Pards really will earn his wad today if we pull off a win with 10 men, Talk about bragging rights 😉

  19. The Kid @116-agreed. I don’t get it. It’s like the hunt on foreigners for diving when Ashley young is probably the worst of the lot.

Tiote is intending to hurt people by a slightly late tackle which he was already committed to before the whistle went, but Scholes is just an honest challenger when he tears through the back of people and chops them down. 🙄

  20. Header from Fletcher there. You know, the one that Sky have built up to be the best in the air?

He’s only good in the air because his ears are like fucking wings off a 747. Ugly kernt

      (Quote)

  21. Gav @ 124 or anyone else fans are slating Tiote because they don’t see it as a 50/50 tackle, and if you do thas your choice but don’t expect everyone to see it the same

      (Quote)

  22. Big Dave – I didn’t say it was a 50/50 challenge. I thought it was a foul, and possibly should have been a yellow card. But to give him a red was incredibly harsh. Don’t let me spoil your ride on the anti-Tiote bandwagon though.

      (Quote)

  23. Gav sorry I mis read your post I thought you were saying it was a 50/50 but it was there is 50 tackles like that.
As for band wagons im not on any band wagon but if I think one of our players was dirty I’ll state it and won’t shy away. I’m pretty sure if that was a Mackem that made the tackle you wouldn’t being saying it was harsh so don’t let me spoil your ride on the hypocrites wagon 😉
