Pressure grows on Pardew

Plenty to ponder for Pardew
I think it’s safe to say the honeymoon period is well and truly over for Alan Pardew now.

Whilst some fans have been dead set against him from the start, I think it’s fair to say that he’s done enough to win the vast majority around, especially last season when we played some great stuff and finished in a very decent and unexpected 5th place in the league.

However things aren’t going to plan this season and whilst I never expected us to really match what we achieved last season, mainly due to a failure by the ownership to add to the squad over the summer but also because I feel last season we had a lot of things go our way. I didn’t expect us to be this rubbish though and we are getting to the point now where questions need answering.

We’ve lost three games on the bounce now – two at home and one away – against teams that we shouldn’t have lost to. Granted any team can beat the other on the day but the fact is that we just haven’t looked like winning. Not even close. I dare say we could still be playing at Southampton and we still wouldn’t have mustered a shot on target.

The result yesterday really tipped my opinion. We we’re awful and I’m that p*ssed off about it still I haven’t even bothered writing a match report about it. In fairness I can write a brief one now which sums up our “performance” at St Mary’s. We never threatened. Southampton bossed us and deserved the win. The end. Sound about right?

Anyway I’m digressing as it isn’t just about the performance yesterday, which was woeful (I may have mentioned that previously…). It’s about the performances in general. I can take losing if we’re still performing and looking likely to get out of this rut we are stuck in, but we’re not and somebody has to start taking the blame for it.

Whilst I sympathise with Pardew in the sense that we are dealing with an awful lot of injuries right now, ultimately it is his job to get the best of whichever players are fit and available for selection. For whatever reason, that just isn’t happening.

If things aren’t working, which clearly they aren’t, then I expect to see something change. Isn’t a definition of madness trying the same thing over and over again but expecting different results? That’s what I’m seeing. No change in formation, approach or tactics, just the same thing time and again.

Pressure is growing on Alan Pardew in what is a results based business. Ultimately results have been poor and if they continue in that vein then surely it will only end one way? I don’t buy this eight-year deal being a sign of security either. Contracts are worth nothing these days and I have no doubt that Mike Ashley would have made sure he doesn’t have to pay out any huge compensation figure should the worst happen.

I don’t think Pardew is set for the chop yet and I honestly think he’s earned a bit of patience, but if things don’t improve soon enough then surely something will have to change?

What do you think?

I’m surprised Harry Redknapp gets another chance with his record of sackings. Finished 4th last season. Yet he’s everyone’s choice for the England job.

Don’t mention Portsmouth Fawlty. Bloody rotters. I think I mentioned once but got away with it. 😯

  3. Looks like most of us are anticipating a finish in the mid 40 point range for this season. How will that sit with Ashley going forward? Would Pardew come back for another season and would Llambias still be MD? I would bet Pardew would be gone and Llambias would still be around with another sucker as manager. Who looks good for that seat, with no power or say in signings, a cheap owner, and the mentally deficient Llambias down the hall?

  4. BB@130-Depends mate. I agree if he loses 3 more on the trot he will get the sack, I said the other day that if he lost the next two it might happen…but that doesn’t mean I’d agree with it.

I can’t really put it down to a pure result basis. What happens if we play brilliantly but we’re only just outdone? If there are signs of encouragement he should obviously stay. Further deterioration? Well…..Ideally I’d keep him til Jan though, unless Mourinho decides he wants to come home and help us in memory of Bobby..

I believe you also stated that the squad was in decent shape and asked me to be patient at the end of the last window. You couldn’t see the problem with the transfer policy. Did you say that or have I got it wrong?

‘Supporters have been brain washed into thinking not selling a good player is a great transfer window, instead of actually adding to the success of last season.’

I actually think if anyone was interested in Tiote (were they??) for £12-15mill say, we should have sold him and got a centre half and RB/LB or a winger. Players can be bought in from the continent for a bargain and have one great season before tailing off. Look at when we bought Bassong for £500,000 and sold him to ‘Arry for £7 million or whatever it was. I don’t think Tiote is going to be a flop, but he is always going to be a liability. I think we really under-performed in the transfer market this time compared to being spoiled for the last few seasons.

  9. I know they are all puppets and jobs for the boys etc. but in the real world if Lambias had another transfer window as poor as this one he should be sacked IMO. We were in a strong position and we have gone backwards/ done nothing.

  10. Please, please, please play a 433 formation Alan. I beg of you! At least it will bring an end to all this talk about it being the panacea for all our on field issues. Christ it won’t matter what fecken formation we play, we are playing ****. Still we need to give Pardz a chance to turn it around. To be fair, in a season and a half, this is the first really bad run we have had..

      (Quote)

  11. But what a bad run it is Aussie. And just before we have a really nasty run of games including Man City and Man United. For me that is the big concern. We definitely need wins against Wigan and QPR or we will slip further down the table. Draws against Fulham and Stoke would be helpful as well.

  12. Troy, I did state the squad was in decent shape. I also asked you to be patient because of that. I still think we have a decent squad. I couldn’t see the problem with the transfer policy and I still don’t. So you are correct, I did say that. You have not got it wrong.

      (Quote)

  17. We have discussed what might happen if we lose the next 3 games but does anyone think that Pardew might be sacked if we lose at home to Wigan? That would make 3 straight home losses and I can’t see us winning away to Stoke. Might that be enough to do it? I hope not but surely by then he would not fancy his survival chances with Ashley.

  18. Troy, you blame the lack of spend. I blame the poor football manager who can’t get it right on the training ground.

Troy, as it should support your argument, please let me know where we figure in the league table of squad values. So forget the Andy Carroll money and how much is in the bank, let me know how much we have spent on our current squad, and how that compares to other EPL clubs?

Toonsy is right. The honeymoon period is over. Its now time to ask the hard questions about this man’s credentials.

      (Quote)

  19. BB from 2003 to today we have spent a net total of 3.9M pounds on players 168.1 M pounds to buy, 164.2M pounds earned on sales). A not very impressive 15th place. We have been outspent by the likes of Stoke, QPR, West Brom, Fulham, Norwich, and Everton who all have much smaller grounds. The link is:http://transferleague.co.uk/. I was shocked since it includes a few pre-Ashley years when we were supposedly famous for over-spending. Just a quick look-around not definitive by any means but it suggests we consistently underspend but were poor in general with our purchases from 2003 to 2008 which of course includes the Michael Owen years.

      (Quote)

  20. G2 I hear that but its not the question I asked. Look at each club’s current squad, look at how much was spent on each player, and come up with a total spend. Thus the Carroll sale and other sales are irrelevant.

      (Quote)

  21. another measure that troy should use is the league table of wages outlay for current squads. are we outspent by the likes of stoke, qpr, west brom, fulham, norwich and everton?

      (Quote)

  22. Ah I see BB. That sounds like a full time job for some energetic person. It would be interesting but all I see right now is a 14th place team with a 4M pound net spend last summer complaining about injuries as if no other team has them. The value of the players is in the eye of the beholder to some extent anyway. What is Willo worth compared to what we paid? Would anyone pay 1M for him? I think in general we could get more than what we paid for about half of the starters: Krul, Tiote, Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Ba (since we paid nothing), Saylor, and possibly Santon and that’s about it. But are we building a successful, highly competitive side? No. Do we have a fantastic manager to take us to a cup or league title? No. Do we have a football owner and managing director with football in their blood and great ambition for the team? No.

      (Quote)

  23. Yes that’s interesting Wellington but does it mean that Everton have a team that is inferior to us because they have a smaller supposed net value on the market? Or does it mean they are more shrewd in their purchases and get better value? Or does it mean that Moyes gets more out of players who were valued for less? I think it’s pretty clear that Moyes gets more out his players than Pardew does this season and I could see our players valuations dropping by the end of this season as well if they stick around. I am seeing a lot of anxiety in Pardew’s body language that I didn’t see when Everton was struggling but the Moyes has a much better overall track record than Pardew I think.

      (Quote)

  24. We have the players to beat all of the teams around us on the table. Regardless of how much we have or haven’t spent, our players are all playing poorly. They are not poor players, they are just playing that way at the moment. 😕

      (Quote)

  25. I’m sure QPR outspend us for wages, Everton are probably close to even, maybe less.

    Won’t know til I get Football Manager 2013 😆

      (Quote)

  26. G2: It doesn’t mean any of those things. All it means is that the market value of Everton’s team is less than ours. But what you are asking is, why is that the case?

Well, as you’ll note from the table, they are older, which greatly affects the value of a player’s contract. Moyes has the liberty of keeping his veterans on the books and is permitted to buy older players where appropriate, whereas (at least for now) Pardew has been obliged to move them on to reduce the wage bill and seems to be barred from buying players over 27. To take a particular example, Tim Krul is rated at twice the value of Tim Howard, because Krul has all of the best years of his career ahead of him. The market doesn’t much care how the two are playing today.

Regarding the strength of Everton’s team, one should also note that a great many of the squad have been playing together for several seasons. The importance of familiarity was very nicely demonstrated at the last World Cup, where France (with its players scattered to the four winds) failed to impress, but lowly New Zealand (with the core of its team huddled together at the country’s one professional club) went home undefeated.

I don’t think much of the amateur psychology. Pardew and Moyes express themselves in different ways, as the English and Scots are known to do. What else can one say?

      (Quote)

  27. Fine, let’s talk wages. I don’t have the current season figures and doubt that anyone does. Last season’s are here: http://www.sportskeeda.com/2012/05/24/chart-showing-turnover-vs-wage-bill-in-the-premier-league/

There are some definite “breaks” in the distribution. The big 3 spenders are obvious, with Arsenal & Liverpool hanging on and Spurs and Aston Villa a little further back. Then there’s a cluster of 8 teams (including us & Everton, and Stoke rather dropping off the back), then a tail of four, and finally Blackpool footing a wage bill scarcely more than 1/8th of Chelsea’s.

Though I’m not sure what can really be said about this other than, “Liverpool are overpaid and useless.”

  28. We’ll have overtaken Everton now I imagine…although Barton and Smith and Nolan and Jose to a degree were big earners…Yeah I’m not really sure what you can get from it. I think BB just means we should be performing better with our assets. Or something.

  29. Ahh right…fair enough, for another time then.

I’ve just had a thought, what were the odds on us to go down at the start of the season? I’ll need to send this info to Wraithy asap… 😆

    @B&B

I believe you are missing my point.

I am able to identify that we are underperforming. That has been a rant of mine for many a week. I have criticised Pardew repeatedly over the past few weeks. He’s calling it wrong on many fronts at the moment.

My sole point about this, is about giving him time to resolve the issues. He’s simply deserves that time. He worked absolute wonders last season.

We are only a third of the way into this season, having suffered more injuries and suspensions than last year. Cisse is clearly out of sorts and Pardew quite rightly wants to keep playing him in order for him to find his feet. I agree with that strategy. You don’t find your feet on the sidelines.

I find this idea of sacking Pardew at this stage, absolutely mind blowing. It beggars belief it’s even being considered by many including you.

I again ask you to look at Evertons history. We are now in a similar position. They’ve sold many a player for big profit, qualified for Europe, struggled in the early stages of the premier and then came strong at the end. Moyes has worked wonders and the board have shown loyalty. I’ve no doubt there were many Everton fans calling for his head when they were languishing near the bottom in the early part of his Everton career.

Regarding the money being spent in the summer. Well, if we had got a CB we may now be more organised instead of being in disarray as shown at Southampton.

I see Curtis Good is not the best CB at Bradford yet, though he may be by Xmas. Apparently he pulled out of the first team squad last week. The reason given was he was tired from training!!!! 😳

      (Quote)

  32. Brendan@187 – So Pardew has played Anita as a #10 week-in, week-out? Watch the games more closely, mate. 😉

Troy@188 – “Fatigue” from training doesn’t necessarily mean “tired”. I think it implies minor injury or risk of injury.

  33. Bradford City boss Phil Parkinson has said that new signing Curtis Good was left out for Saturday’s game at Bristol Rovers because of fatigue.
The 19-year-old defender joined the Bantams on loan from Newcastle until 2 January last Thursday.
“He had a bit of fatigue from some training and I didn’t feel confident putting him on the bench,” Parkinson told BBC Radio Leeds.

Bit tired from training. !!!!!!!!!!!! 😳

If he had been injured however slight then the manager would have said so.
    Fatigue means tired, lethargy, listless.

The poor lad was tired. Do you not know Australians are made of paper mâché . Once an Aussie gets a sweaty and hot they turn into mush.

It’s a classic case of Aussie mush syndrome. Ask our Aussie friends on here. 😛 😛

      (Quote)

  35. Troy interesting that bit about Good being tired from training. Was that because of the demands of previously training at Newcastle or is the training harder at Bradford? Somehow I suspect the latter as said very early on this blog this season that I thought our players were not as fit as other teams. We rarely win the second ball.

  37. Troy@191 – I’m quite familiar with Australian football. The A-League is played at a low tempo and their training isn’t particularly intense. In both cases this seems to be due to the climate. But are you really claiming managers always announce injuries and injury concerns in plain language? 😆

If a manager says fatigue then I would expect him to use the word in the right context. Tired, listless, lethargy. You even try and explain why he could be fatigued. You state the Aussie league is played at a low tempo and the fitness levels won’t be up yet.

Why would he use the word fatigue if he was slightly injured.

I find it astounding that a player can be pulled from a game because he’s fatigued. Even if you were knackered, you wouldn’t let on and would try and convince the manager you were feeling fit.

These players get plenty of time to relax and sleep. They don’t have to work night shifts or get up at 5 or 6 in the morning! Ffs 😳

    @Johno

Thanks. I see us exactly in the same boat as them. No manager can achieve great things with the resources Moyes and Pards receive.

We simply haven’t got the squad to compete strongly whilst in Europe. I would expect us to slowly improve on our recent form and finish roughly in the same position as the expenditure league table. 10th to 7th.

      (Quote)

  46. Agreeing with Troy once in a thread usually comes as a shock. Multiple times is making me think I must be high 😯
Fatigue is always associated with tiredness. Why wouldn’t he just say he had picked up a niggle? I’m sure the Bradford manager isn’t trying to play mind games with upcoming opposition managers. Fitness obviously isn’t up to scratch. Another indication that the fitness coaching is also letting us down, among every other bloody thing this season.

      (Quote)

  47. My point about comparing wage bills and money paid for our current squad against other teams is that some fans keep blaming the board and not Pardew for the current malaise. I’m saying that Pardew took charge of a highly talented side irrespective of whether or not the Carroll cash is sitting in the bank. His very expensive, well paid bunch of soccer stars is like a Rolls-Royce in terms of quality compared to some other clubs’ family saloons and estate cars. If anyone had the choice of squads to take into the new season, where do you think ours would rank? Do you think he would have swapped ours for WBA’s?

I take Troy’s point that it seems crazy to be calling for his head so soon. However, I see all the signs of a man who has lost confidence in his own ability. The more wrong calls he makes, the more he loses the players. Once a club gets into a malaise like this, it is usually a sign of unrest and disenchantment in the camp. The rumours of this were rife in the summer. What seems like a very good team on paper can prove ver different on the football field, and who is to blame for that?

You may say it’s crazy to call for Pardew’s head so soon, but it is a seemingly crazy statistical fact that, on average, managers only last a little over a couple of seasons. It is also seemingly crazy for any business to appoint a man to a top job who has been sacked by his previous employers for presiding over dreadful runs of poor performances. Other crazy statistical facts are that we’ve went about two years without scoring from a set piece and lord knows how many games since we came back from a goal down. Whose responsibility is that?

The stakes this season are massive, and we can’t afford to keep capitulating. Unfortunately, there are no signs that anything is happening on the training ground to put things right. Is it so crazy to ditch a manager these days when, these days, the manager seems to have little or no input scouting and selecting the personnel, something that was the main part of a manager’s job in the past?

Finally, Troy, you say Pardew needs time. However, you never seem to deal head on with my point that Pardew said he was happy going into the season with the squad he had. You keep blaming the board for letting him down. Okay we’ve had a good share of injuries but injuries are inevitable; we’re playing other clubs who also suffering the same way.

The fact is that clubs haven’t got the time to give a manager because, if the manager ever turns a major slump around, it is rarely in the same season. The stakes this season are simply too big. Okay, we’re not in a mjor slump quite yet, but I can’t see how he’s going to turn this around. With every loss the pressure is going to mount further on Pardew, the fans and crucially the board.

I only brought him back in the conversation cos I was referring previously to the lack of quality CB’s at the club.

I’ve no idea if he’s good or not. I bloody wish he would turn out to be the best CB at the club by Xmas. I just mentioned it to have a tongue in cheek jibe at you.

  50. Troy@200 – I’m glad that you’re being so pedantic about this. It helps me to see how other people feel when speaking to me!

Quite simply, fatigued doesn’t mean tired. It’s a term with a wide range of meanings, including the ones that you picked up from the dictionary after being questioned. Nor do people – even the paragons of learning chosen to manage football clubs – always speak precisely. All you can really conclude from that statement is that the player had some physical problems (likely minor) from training.

I do explain why the lad might be fatigued. I don’t, however, share your certainty over what precise problem is being identified by the term. If you have a crystal ball, please start using it for good rather than on him!

      (Quote)

  51. Solano@204 – Thought experiment time. You’re managing a small club, and have just signed a kid from a Prem team for six weeks. The lad’s knee swells up after training and the physio wants to monitor the situation. Resting him doesn’t cause squad problems.

Do you want to tell the fans that he’s injured, risking abuse for making a crocked short-term signing? Or do you just say he’s fatigued and assure people that he’ll play in the next game?

You mention WBA but we are only a third of the way through the season. There’s a hell of a long way to go. I’m as frustrated as the next man but to sack him now would be wrong IMO.

People deserve chances and Pardew has earned his chance as a result of last season.

We have not got the financial clout to pick and choose managers. A new manager means starting all over again. I rate Martin O Neill highly yet his team are worse off than ours. I dare bet there expenditure is larger than ours.

Have you not learnt anything from the past? We are a club renowned for chopping and changing and having no stability.

Who would you bring in? Who would do this job? We struggled to attract anyone of quality last time.

I accept Pardew stated his squad was strong enough. I don’t believe he could have predicted the severe drop in form of Cisse who was prolific last season.

      (Quote)

  53. @Wellington
I’m not saying they were wrong to rest him. I’m just saying that fatigue is generally used to describe tiredness. You are basically now saying that he might have said fatigue to appease fans where previously you said fatigue could mean an injury…
I think i’d be more concerned if we signed a player that wasn’t up to speed fitness wide than if a player got a niggle. Niggle can be clear in a week. Not being fit enough having been here 2 months is pretty poor tbh.

I don’t have a crystal ball personally but my grandma Baba Vanga the psychic lent me hers.

I have been speaking to Shakespeare beyond the grave about the meanings of the word fatigue.

I’m in total confusion who to believe now cos Shakepeare was a genius with words and how to use them. Or you? Could you tell me your background in lexicology?

The reason I’m confused is because Shakespeare states fatigue means tired.
Yet you state; fatigued doesn’t mean tired. 😯

Please enlighten me where it means minor injury?

I thought minor injury meant minor injury. 😯

Wellexogolist – a person who uses words out of context. 😛

  56. Troy and Strumpet – Just because the more successful teams are the ones that keep their managers does not equate to “keep your present manager no matter what and you will be successful”. The very difficult trick is to appoint the right man in the first place. You don’t start with a man whose track record is one of failure.

  57. Read something interesting yesterday where in Moyes’ first season he finished 5th and in his second, 17th. Most clubs would have pulled the trigger, but they didn’t….a sign of things to come for us? Or is 17th too close for comfort.

  58. Newkie I think it comes down to the board. If the board have faith in Pardew he would stay if we finished 17th. I dont think this board give too much thought to fans opinion. And run the club as a business and take away as much emotion as they can from decisions.

No but it definitely makes your point on the average managers length at a club completely invalid.
It’s already been said before, who would you like instead? I’m sure there will be a queue of managers waiting.
Pardew has at least proved that he can:
Get the most out of average players (Willo/Perch/Raylor/Best)
Manage difficult egos (telling HBA he had to prove himself to start above Oba and that not cause a French meltdown!)
Sometimes get signings from the board (Cisse even though it wasn’t “crucial”)
Turn a defence with only one defender of actual quality into a well drilled, disciplined unit.
Now he is suffering a hit in every one of those points, but he has proved he has done it before, so he deserves a chance to prove it again.
We have had such a string of dross this last decade, Pardew led us to one of our highest points tallys ever and people want rid? Madness. If Colo hadn’t got that stupid suspension I think we’d have 6 more points right now.

  60. Curtis Good has just got back from 3 weeks playing in the Middle East. Nowt at all to do with the slow tempo of the A-league or Newcastle training methods.

  61. Johno-that’s what I meant though mate. Is it too close for the comfort of the board? They have shown a willingness and intent to provide/create stability and clearly see Pards as their man, but they also have a ruthless streak as shown by the sacking of Hughton, as well as other decisions.

Which side will they come down on..

    @B&B

I’ve never suggested that you stick with the manager no matter what. That would be ridiculous. My point is, we are a third of the way thru the season and there’s two thirds to go.

You want him sacked now cos we are 14th.

His record could be blemished by over eager chairman.

For me, it’s far too early to even suggest it.

  63. Strumpet – Why is my average manager length at a club point completely invalid? It shows that managers don’t stay in their posts for long. It is the nature of the job. It is a very potent fact that the odds are stacked massively against any manager not just Pardew. That fact stands before you even look at what Pardew has done to merit his job.

I don’t think Pardew has proved he can get the most out of average players. The players you’ve mentioned have simply done okay.

You cite HBA’s difficult ego, but what evidence have you got that he is an unjustified trouble maker?

Sometimes get signings from the board. It was all his skill and no other manager could do this, I suppose?

I don’t think there is any evidence that he has turned the defence into a well drilled disciplined unit. He has got most of the rest of the side to help, and a good goalkeeper.

  64. Troy, I never said I wanted him sacked now. I said I can’t see him getting out of this mess because he’s clueless. He has never got us playing the controlled, possession football he talks about. The odds are stacked against him and his days appear numbered. He would never have been my choice, not least because his record is ****. That said, I’m not pushing to get rid of him. I’m don’t mind PROVIDED we don’t get involved in a relegation dog fight. I’m happy as long as we stay in the EPL and do okay. Anything else is a bonus. I’m not into chopping and changing managers if it is at all avoidable. However, Pardew is fighting massive odds against him. All managers are. It’s just a footballing phenomenon!

Jeez. I’ve been under the impression you wanted him sacked now. Why have you let me post for hours on end when you now have exactly the same point of view as me.

    Incredible 🙄
