Job done? Brighton 2-0 Newcastle

Hoskins makes it two
Hoskins makes it two
I said prior to the match yesterday that I wasn’t especially bothered about the result against Brighton, and now we’ve been beaten again I stick by that.

Of course it’s never nice losing a game, but as soon as I saw the team-sheet I knew we’d be in trouble and to be fair it isn’t the result that is getting to me.

Instead it’s the performance of what are largely backup players who failed to cover themselves in any glory when there was a chance to put down a marker for a spot in the first-team. With a chance to impress only a couple of players took the opportunity to shine with the rest proving why there is such a distinct difference between this season and last.

In many ways last season was built on through the strength of players itching to prove a point, players like Ryan Taylor and Leon Best who would get a chance and try to impress enough to keep their place in the first-team. We haven’t had that this season and the only players to come out of the defeat yesterday with any real credit are Vurnon Anita and Gael Bigirimana.

The truth is that Newcastle deserved to go out yesterday and were second best in pretty much every department. Sure it’s good news for our fixture list as we set about trying to maintain Premier League survival, but the fact remains that it’s another game we lost, and we’ve lost another player to boot after Shola Ameobi became the scapegoat for Lee Probert and the home crowd.

I’m also sort of blaming the fact we were down to ten men for the result but it was with eleven men when we were at our worst and Brighton deservedly took the lead just after the half hour mark after Wayne Bridge crossed for Andrea Orlandi to volley past Rob Elliot. James Perch had already cleared off the line and the best that Newcastle could offer in return were long range efforts from Gael Bigirimana, Shola Ameobi and Vurnon Anita, none of which looked likely to beat Casper Ankergren in the Brighton goal.

Shola Ameobi saw red in the 63rd minute after picking up a second yellow meaning that he will now miss the game with Norwich next weekend. In truth it was a harsh red when you look at the offences individually, but in a weird way it brought out the best in United and we actually started to play a bit with Sylvain Marveaux – on for Gabriel Obertan – looking to pull some strings.

However with just a few minutes left on the clock Brighton put the away side out of their misery and after Mike Williamson got caught the wrong side of Will Buckley the Brighton forward had the simple task of slotting the ball past Rob Elliot.

Another season and another FA Cup exit to a lower league team although on the day you’d be hard pushed to suggest just who was supposed to be the Premier League in all of this. Job done in terms of fixture list reduction, but it’s no real consolation to fans at the end of the day.

Howay the lads!

  1. MM against Man U and Arsenal we were not abysmal going forward its just the defence are ***** . If Pardew sticks with the way we played in those games attacking wise and adds at least 1 very good CB we will be fine . How far off is HBA from a return ? a lot rests on him Cabaye and Marveaux carrying on his good form and imo its good Tiote is off too the ACON and Anita makes the DM position his own .

      (Quote)

  2. I don’t think Anita is a DM. He always looks far better as a standard CM or moving forward.

  3. That simmo song is stupid. i wish the fans would drop it. The kid seems to have his mind on other things, namely Tulisa, getting her into bed, and living the playboy life. We don’t need that ****.

      (Quote)

  4. Wonder if West Spam would do a swap deal Simpson and Willo for Tomkins , they along with Fulham were reported to want Simmo . It would be a master stroke from us plunging their defence into total chaos while we get a decent CB in . Lets face it their manager once signed Rozenthal and CaCapca for us so he probably rates Simmo and Willo

      (Quote)

  5. Axel ,Knowing our luck they would go there and play brilliant 🙄 tbf Simmo aint as bad as Wilo.

      (Quote)

  6. Kim – perch is not a footballer. He’s bad everywhere. The only thing he does we’ll is to put in two or three crowd pleasing tackles per game. That perchinho song should be dropped as well.

      (Quote)

  7. RE Anita: He is a harrier who likes to pressure the opposition into less dangerous areas and keeps the ball moving with his crisp, incisive passing.

  8. Been reading in the dutch press that Sissoko has already agreed too join Spurs and its now down too the clubs too agree a fee . So thats him off our list then . They are also reporting here possibly Heitinga too Ajax as a replacement for Anderwiel if he leaves in this window . Us ,Arsenal and Spurs have shown an intersest in Anderwiel so thats us out of the running then .

  9. I would say of this ‘reserve’ team…

Elliott….happy with him, got some stick when he first arrived but every time he has played this season he has looked reliable and he is more vocal than Krul and tries to lead the defence.
Tavernier….I still have hopes for him, he got beat by Bridge but Obertan didn’t track him and he will be beaten by worse players than Bridge. He has hunger and a bit of pace about him and gets forward. I would be happy for him to be backup to Debuchy next season and he would do okay in a better team.
Williamson…gets a lot of stick but keeps trying to be fair to the guy even though he isn’t top level and we all know. How many players would get the stick he gets and get a ‘strain’ or something and go hiding. It’s not his fault that the club won’t recruit any CB’s.
Perch…Is good enough to be on the bench with the likes of Jonas and playing in this sort of game.
Santon…We signed this guy and then didn’t sign the other half of a fancy, top level team. Like trying to put the cart in front of the horse. If we wern’t going to spend to challenge for things and are going to spend more time defending than keeping the ball and attacking then we might as well have bought a defender of a LB and sacrifice the dribbling for a bog standard LB that can defend well.
Marveaux…He should be first choice until we have real competition in midfield ie. HBA & Cabaye all knocking on the door.
Bigi…Put in the effort that said ‘pick me’ and not only that, he has the talent to make it as well. Worth noting he is 18 and some of the other ‘kids’ were about 21.
Abeid…He is drinking at the last chance saloon unless things drastically improve.
Obertan… I still think he is worth having as competition out wide and to bring on against tired legs. I prefer him on the left to every time I have seen him on the right.
    Shola…………………………………
Sammy…I’m yet to be convinced that he ‘has it’. Like Shola, he has something, but it’s debatable what it is. Seriously, he has some tricks up his sleeve and some decent control but he is still far too lightweight and he seems to have lost some pace, he looked quicker last season. Unless he doesn’t and it was just that his movement was more intelligent, therefore creating the illusion of pace.

      (Quote)

  10. Axel

Not surprised Spurs are trying to sign Sissoko. They don’t at all need him, but he’s cheap, highly rated and Levy probably smells a profit at the very worst.

      (Quote)

  11. When Anita and Bigi were defending high up the field and preesing the opposition early then we looked at our best imo.

I agree that Anita has more to him going forward, and with a bit luck could weigh in with 2-3 goals per season. We just need to get the defensive rock in front of the back four back into play. I think that defensive rock is Tiote, no matter what people say. He must be coached or nurtured through his bad patch, cos last season he was a 10 million man for sure. This year he is a liability.

      (Quote)

  12. DJG

My biggest problem from Sammy Ameobi is that he copies Shola’s lackadaisical approach to the game. Far too often flat footed and standing with his hands on his waist.

I don’t think he will make it. Lacks end product.

      (Quote)

  13. Did you read that on a box of cornflakes Kid? 😆 I think he’ll be a top player for us.

As for Perch – as a DM he’s effective imo. Puts tackles in, keeps passing simple and pretty much almost scores every game. No issues with him there at all – just dont put him in defence!

      (Quote)

  14. Munich

I have a feeling that Tiote’s for will improve once he has Anita and Cabaye in front of him. Both always make themselves available and hi will hopefully realise he doesn’t need to try and be the “creator”.

      (Quote)

  15. In terms of new signings, I’m not sure the likes of Douglas, Remy and other foreign players are what we need in the mess we find ourselves in.
I honestly think we need to look at players who will be good for a battle, players who will leave blood, sweat and tears out on the pitch for us.
When we have our players fully fit, I think we have plenty of flair players in Marv, Benny, Cabaye, Cisse, Santon, Debuchy and Anita.
What we are missing is grafters, the sort of work Jonas was doing last year and even the graft Best was putting in at the start of last season for Ba.
The likes of Remy and Douglas are great when ya top 5, but bottom 5 I’d worry that about their commitment, heart and desire.
I mean, Douglas is in a Twente team up the top of the Dutch league, Remy also up there with OM, so what would there motivation really be?.

      (Quote)

  16. The Kid, spot on regarding Tiote. He is brought up in the cloggy league, similar to Anita, where they don’t give the ball away. That’s half the trouble with the pirhouette scene that he keps getting caught in. If he believes in the player he is passing too then he will give the ball. It’s as if he looks at the easy ball, thinks “no chance” spins and knackers himself by closing the space. Good footballers also need good footballers around them.

He also still needs to get his tackling sorted out.

      (Quote)

  17. Yeah Tiote will come good. No biding he’s had a nightmare this season but then who hasn’t?

      (Quote)

  18. Shamrock Perch will be an excellent back up defensive midfielder next season, cos with our full strength team available he won’t be anywhere near the team.

He shouldn’t be played in defence as full back / CH imo. A no frills tackle and give it defensive midfielder who knows his own limitations. Basically that is what Perch and Willaimson are. 1 million pound players who can step in when needed, but you cannot build your team around them, and that is what old sweet talker Pardew has unleashed on us. Not any more Alan.

We will need the Taverniers, Perch etc next season, but only from the bench.

      (Quote)

  19. I might be alone in this, but I much preferred the look of Dummett to Tavernier. Big, strong and agile. Most importantly, he always tries to play it forward on the ground. These guys will learn a lot from Debuchy and Santon.

On another note, when Ferguson first burst on the scene he was a direct and explosive winger that always tried to run up the line. However, ever since he properly joined in first team training he has stopped trying to beat players and instead tries to cross the ball from deep.

I sound like a broken record I know, but I really don’t rate Carver and Stone. They are clueless and aren’t fit to lace some of our players’ boots.

      (Quote)

  20. Yeah he’s obviously a back up player, but a good one in my opinion – as a DM – nothing more.

      (Quote)

  21. I think it will do Tiote good too be away for a while so long as his country has a good ACON ,that might invigorate him and we will see the Tiote of last season when he returns .

      (Quote)

  22. I just wonder if the likes of Abeid realise that they will get a chance to start a game like this and if they don’t put in 95% effort and grab it with both hands it could be their last chance at a club like this. I don’t think Abeid looked bothered, he was strolling around like it was a training session. Pardew missed a trick not recalling Inman and playing him. He would have grabbed the chance. But Pardew gets these things wrong every game, it is not a one off.

      (Quote)

  23. The Kid – I agree with you regarding Carver and Stone. The seen to be more mates with the players than coaches. Like I said the other day, I’d love to see someone like Tony Adams or Sol Campbell as a defensive coach, and Nicky **** in as a midfield/general coach. Young lads who haven’t long finished playing and have been at the big successful clubs.
I also think players coming in will know of them and take notice.

      (Quote)

To be fair, we would only need Sissoko if we planned to offload Tiote. However, after his form this year we’d do well to get a bag of Haribo and a dish cloth for him 😆

  25. MUNICH MAG
I think part of the difference between Perch and Tiote in midfield is like you say, Perch knows his limitations and Tiote perhaps doesn’t. When he was playing with better players I think it flattered him a bit. He is trying to be too clever and teams are targeting him in possession now. I definitely think it is in the team talk of other managers, it’s no coincidence at all. Perch when he gets the ball he very very rarely gives it away. Tiote is becoming like Nicky ‘hollywood pass’ **** and thinking that he is a better player, in a better team than he actually is.

  26. THE KID its maybe time too get Dummet loaned to a championship team instead of loaning him back to st mirren , he has been getting rave revues north of he border but the championship will provide a sterrner test for the lad . The same with inman he is playing really well for Crewe but maybe a step up in division would be good for him too and get a Tavernier loaned out again . As for Abied and Amalfinato a return too france maybe . I did not understand the latter,s signing he is already 22 isnt he ?he is hardly a gifted up and coming teenager and if he was that good he would be in the first team by now . At least on the bench more often .

I would like to see Amalfitano come into a side doing well. Don’t think I have seen enough of him to judge yet.

  28. Come the summer I’d like to see the back of Simpson, Williamson, Gosling, Abied, Obertan, Ranger and Xisco. There 7 players in our squad I don’t rate good enough to wear the strip.
How many of those could be replaced by free transfers in the summer – coz I’d put all 7 up for free themselves just to get them out!!

      (Quote)

  29. SHARPY 17 how about Steve Howey and Stuart Pearce as a defensive coaching team and while we are at it Ginola in as skills coach to work individualy or with small groups of players . Honing their passing and shooting skills .

      (Quote)

  30. SHARPY Xisco and Simpson will be leaving anyhow their contracts are run down at the seasons end as for the others i agree and maybe its time for Harper too hang up his gloves and given a job in the backroom staff .

      (Quote)

  31. I would like to see Harper get a good testimonial to raise money for charity for 20 years service at the club. Come on Derrick and Mike, sort it out and do something good for once.

  32. I was shocked by Abeid. Heard good things about him. Cant even say he was *****, he just dint even try to get involved. Shocking and he can fook off.

  33. For a team Pardew was saying should be fighting for a top 4 place this surely has to be one of the biggest shambles of all time. How could he be so far off in his statements from last summer? Let’s look at the reasons:
    1. Injuries. We have had more than a few. The list is long including Cabaye, Saylor, Ben Arfa, and several others of less importance. Should we have expected and prepared for more injuries with more games? Of course. Did we? Of course not. That would cost money.
    2. More games. This depends on how far we go in Europa but 6 more games in the first half of the season took its tole. Should we have brought in several more players in preparation? Of course. Since we didn’t should we have kept the likes of Best, Guthrie and possibly even Peter? Of course since we didn’t reinforce properly.
    3. Ba and Cisse. Demba Ba was never going to be happy staying with us given our wage structure. Once he started banging in the goals again this season he was sure to go. Should Pardew have known this and played Cisse more in the CF position to prepare us for Ba’s leaving? It’s only hind sight now but since we had no intention of matching Ba’s wage demands it surely should have been a priority. Will Cisse respond and bring us the goals we need? It depends on what service he gets in large part. Right now we are hopeless getting the ball to our forwards.
    4. The players have let Pardew down. There are several players who appear to fall under this heading. I would put Tiote, Jonas, Obertan, Shola, and possibly Cisse in this group. There is some excuse for Cisse as he played out of position for the most part.
    5. Poor manager. Is Pardew going to be able to salvage this season and bring us something better next? Both very difficult questions to answer at this point. The only thing that might save him this season is the fact that several teams are as poor as or worse than us. Name your own 4 or 5.
    6. Poor ownership. This speaks for itself. An owner that hides and speaks through others (Mike was willing to spend last summer but we just couldn’t make it happen) is poor and weak. Low marks indeed from me and others for little or no effort in the summer and keeping a complete fool as managing director.
That’s my list of the reasons we are where we are. It’s clear from this that we are deep in the brown stuff for many reasons but the buck stops with the owner for me.

      (Quote)

  34. Axel – I’d take Pearce but I don’t think he’d leave the England set up. I don’t think we need Ginola as much as **** or a coach who can discipline the team to tighten things up when needed.
Personally I think Campbell and **** would be a very good combination. They are both young with good footballing brains and it would be good to have a black coach in the club as well.

      (Quote)

  35. I’m also starting to think that perhaps Pardew needs some help in his trainer team. We have been so one paced all season, up until perhaps the Man Utd game. Why has it taken us so long to get our season kick started ?

      (Quote)

  36. Sharpy17, Campbell wouldn’t set foot back at the toon after the way they booted him out. Not sure if I would like him back either to be honest, he has too much going on elsewhere and wouldn’t provide the commitment that we would need. Now his mate Tony Adams is another issue, he would be a great defensive coach. Someone also mentioned Jap Stamm earlier, another world class defender..

      (Quote)

  37. Geordietwo @ 192 I agree with most of that but @ 6 > (Mike was willing to spend last summer but we just couldn’t make it happen) ??? how do we know that he was willing to spend

Sharpy what would make **** a good coach has he got much coaching experience, and why would having a black coach be good for the club ? do we get extra points because of their skin colour ? as IMO it wouldn’t matter what colour the coach is aslong as he’s a good coach

      (Quote)

  38. Munich – Why weren’t you saying he needed help last season? You just cannot make a silk purse out of a sows ear – it’s impossible!!!

      (Quote)

  39. Axel – aye, I know Simmo and Xisco are away and the buggers won’t be missed, just added them to the list as I ran through the squad from defence to forwards or the players we should get rid of in the summer – I know it’s unlikely but they could get offered new contracts on the meantime. Personally I’d see Simmo leave for a couple of mill now if an offer came in.
As for Harper, I agree player/coach role would be a good call for him next year – he’d be worth having around in a crisis

      (Quote)

  40. I don’t really buy Pardew’s line that some of those players should be in the development squad, they’re old enough to be challenging for the first team.

Look at Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, the list goes on, they have plenty of players who are early twenties and younger who play in the first team. By 21yrs old you should be good enough to put in a good display against a championship team.

It’s always the same with our youngsters, compared to alot of young players in other Premier League squads ours are just simply not good enough. How many of our young players have really made it big in the recent past? Carroll, Saylor, Krul, have and will have good Premier League careers, but Shola, Chopra and many before them have never lived up to the hype they were given at a young age.

      (Quote)

  41. The game is riddled with ex-players who were top class, only to end up being very average coaches/managers.

I dont give a **** what the name is of our back room staff as they are good at their job. Something needs changing and if Pards is staying then he definitely needs to think about changing his support team around…

We are getting the basics wrong. That’s not injury or morale – it’s the simple stuff not being covered in training.

      (Quote)

  42. Tino maybe because they’re not good enough, or they haven’t had enough 1st team footie. most of the teams you mention loan their younguns out for a season loan of 1st team footie of a good standard, our younguns seem to get a couple of weeks here and there ❓

      (Quote)

  46. Dave – I would say the other teams quite often play their youngsters in the first team without having being on loan, but some do get sent out for a season. Some of our young players, given their age, should (if they were good enough) be able to start in the first team.

I think we have to be honest and realistic and say some of them are never going to be premier league players.

      (Quote)

  47. Stuart79@197, I don’t know mate, maybe we were all caught up in the success of the run we put together to reach 5th place.
Looking back, I think Ba and Cisse’s goals covered up a lot of cracks, and were the main difference and won us the knife edge games. The same games which we have been losing this season for some reason.

Whereas last season I don’t think we really played “samba football”, as some punters are intimating. I think we were more workmanlike and extremely effective in front of goal. Coupled with a strong defence and an iron-strong will never to give in, that was where we built our success.

This season a lot of those factors have been missing from our play, and we started the season with a shocking lethargy and lack of tempo to our play. Maybe for some reason the players didn’t have the belief they could repeat that performance ? Maybe Pardew and his backroom staff didn’t have that belief and it carried over to the team ?

      (Quote)

  48. Munich

Agreed. We played samba football for about 8-10 games last season, but they just happen to be the last 8-10 games, which is why so many remember us as a good footballing side last season. It’s also why I wanted Ba replaced with a proper left forward. So many remember Ba playing well on the left, but in reality he wasn’t that great there.

You must be winding us up. Samba football for the last 8 to 10 games??

MM is correct in stating Cisse and Ba covered up alot of cracks in the team. Games that were on a knife edge or we were second best were often won with a glimpse of genius from Ba, Cisse or Barfa.

I never saw samba football games. Small glimpses during the odd game but that’s about it.

      (Quote)

  51. Dave – no mate, you don’t get bonus points and its not a racial thing, I just happen to believe that with a number of young black players coming through it would be good for them to have a black coach to look up to and it would make our club more diverse. But my initial post was that I think he would make a good coach!.
As for ****, I think he has a steal about him, similar to Gary Neville who has equally little experience but is doing a good for England in my opinion. It’s just my opinion mate, but I get the feeling that that crop of Fergie boys would all make decent coaches

MM – Campbell lives up this way with his missus and I reckon he’d love a coaching role regardless of what went on. But I agree, personally I’d prefer Adams anyday.

      (Quote)

  52. Big Dave @196 what I was trying to say was that Pardew has often stated that Ashley was willing to spend on a defender last summer. I just don’t know what to make of that. If he wanted a defender in and Llambias couldn’t get one doesn’t that mean Ashley should have sacked Llambias and hired someone who could get a deal done? To me you do your job or you face the consequences. Is that not the case with Llambias? I would suggest as long as Llambias doesn’t overspend then Ashley says nothing and does nothing about it. So here is where we are. 15th place and the whole side is struggling now. So it is the owner’s fault as I see it mate.

      (Quote)

  53. It was not just Ba & Cisse last term. There was hunger, never say dis attitude, total team work, tracking back and working their socks off. I absolutely believe that alone will turn over most teams if your team is half decent. A bit of guile and skill thrown in and suddenly you are mixing it with the very best.

It’s the lack of a plan, effort & fitness that has undone us this year. Anything less than 100% for 90 minutes and you are in serious danger of being turned over.

      (Quote)

  54. What’s really concerning wether we played samba football or not is the fact that the team Pards had fired up and motivated last season has vanished . Same team ,same manager so what is the difference injuries aside ,even when we had a relatively injury free team out it didn’t look right to me . We know defence is weak ,but what has happened to the rest of the previously spirited team ,it’s all wrong . Saw a glimse of last years fight re Manure ,Arsenal but last years team would not of collapsed in last 15 mins V Arsenal and that’s the difference ,there is no self belief which could just be a confidence thing of course but there seems a more deep set problem there . Finally I have to say all season we have looked very unfit and so slow what IS going on in training. 😕

I also thought the same when he played for us, a pure coincidence that he had a wee hen from up north, and his mate Chrissy Houghton looked out for him. Good decision to recruit him for the toon, but about 4 years too late.

Tony Adams would make a good trainer I reckon. Ex England captain, a good communicator, and a winner into the bargain. He ‘s been pretty naff as a manager though but 😳 Maybe he’s one of that group who keep getting jobs based on there brillaince as a player, but cannot hack it as a manager ?
