Job done? Brighton 2-0 Newcastle

Hoskins makes it two
Hoskins makes it two
I said prior to the match yesterday that I wasn’t especially bothered about the result against Brighton, and now we’ve been beaten again I stick by that.

Of course it’s never nice losing a game, but as soon as I saw the team-sheet I knew we’d be in trouble and to be fair it isn’t the result that is getting to me.

Instead it’s the performance of what are largely backup players who failed to cover themselves in any glory when there was a chance to put down a marker for a spot in the first-team. With a chance to impress only a couple of players took the opportunity to shine with the rest proving why there is such a distinct difference between this season and last.

In many ways last season was built on through the strength of players itching to prove a point, players like Ryan Taylor and Leon Best who would get a chance and try to impress enough to keep their place in the first-team. We haven’t had that this season and the only players to come out of the defeat yesterday with any real credit are Vurnon Anita and Gael Bigirimana.

The truth is that Newcastle deserved to go out yesterday and were second best in pretty much every department. Sure it’s good news for our fixture list as we set about trying to maintain Premier League survival, but the fact remains that it’s another game we lost, and we’ve lost another player to boot after Shola Ameobi became the scapegoat for Lee Probert and the home crowd.

I’m also sort of blaming the fact we were down to ten men for the result but it was with eleven men when we were at our worst and Brighton deservedly took the lead just after the half hour mark after Wayne Bridge crossed for Andrea Orlandi to volley past Rob Elliot. James Perch had already cleared off the line and the best that Newcastle could offer in return were long range efforts from Gael Bigirimana, Shola Ameobi and Vurnon Anita, none of which looked likely to beat Casper Ankergren in the Brighton goal.

Shola Ameobi saw red in the 63rd minute after picking up a second yellow meaning that he will now miss the game with Norwich next weekend. In truth it was a harsh red when you look at the offences individually, but in a weird way it brought out the best in United and we actually started to play a bit with Sylvain Marveaux – on for Gabriel Obertan – looking to pull some strings.

However with just a few minutes left on the clock Brighton put the away side out of their misery and after Mike Williamson got caught the wrong side of Will Buckley the Brighton forward had the simple task of slotting the ball past Rob Elliot.

Another season and another FA Cup exit to a lower league team although on the day you’d be hard pushed to suggest just who was supposed to be the Premier League in all of this. Job done in terms of fixture list reduction, but it’s no real consolation to fans at the end of the day.

Howay the lads!

  1. One of the things I notice which is different from last year is the lack of a real bounce back game where the whole team performs better. Last year after a poor performance, particularly on defence we would come back with 2 or 3 games where the defence looked very solid even when we had injuries. We are thin at CB but we were just as thin last season yet the results just aren’t there. What has changed? Team morale does seem lower and fitness is a problem as well. If a few key players went into this season feeling comfortable with being less fit I could see a slip down the table. I’m thinking of players like Jonas and possibly mentally Tiote and Cisse (ie. not physical fitness in their cases but mentally unready for the new season). Since then doubt and disharmony has spread through the team. Add to that the lack of signings, sale of reasonable squad players and the whole Ba/Cisse debacle and you have a recipe for disaster.

  2. I would love Carroll back but it’s now we need a striker not summer . Also he’s crocked at present how bads his injury ? Oh and not £15m ,too much £8m is more like it . 😉

  3. Munich Mag @224 😆 The thought of multiple Derek Llambias’s makes me sick though. Surely the sight of him walking into the offices of different European clubs to negotiate knocks them sick as well.

  4. Even if we could get Carroll for 8M Kimtoon what would he want for a wage? Probably similar to what Ba wanted. It isn’t going to happen unless Carroll goes one or two more seasons with poor performances. Then he might be willing to take a huge pay cut but would he still be worth it?

  5. GeordieTwo@226, I recall even when we won the Championship it wasn’t with blistering performances, more a workmanlike style who ground out results. Last season again our work ethic saw us through, combined with the surprise factor of new players unknown to the old hands. A whole series of factors have contributed to our demise this season, but for the life of me I cannot understand the dreadful lethargy that had spread throughout the team the first months of the season. I recall the early Europa League games were absolutely horrendous to watch yet Pardew came out with some drivel which had me wondering if I had been watching the same match.

Worrying times ahead. With Ba’s goals leaving I can see no end to this spiral. Goals win games. When you have a garbage defence then goals are even more important. We don’t have enough goals throughout the team.

  6. MM @229 ,He’s an oaf who deems it funny to run on the pitch naked 🙄 Now if it were his naked cadaver on the pitch ,now you are talking 😈

  7. Anything that @indykaila says is bullsh*t. He just makes up rumour after rumour and people follow and retweet his b*ll*cks. I only trust a select few journalists. Matt Spiro is one of them, so if he says QPR have been rejected I believe it. Soppy Chops went all the way over there to meet him as well 😆

In my opinion OM are still saying BVB and Schalke are interested because they need us to feel threatened so that we bid what they want. In reality BVB have no place in their fantastic squad for Remy. At the very max he would be on their bench. Schalke also have a quality squad, but I think they are being linked because Huntelaar is constantly being linked to a move away, which would free up a spot for Remy. Can’t see it myself as I think they would aim higher, but you never know.

Nope, I think we are now strong favourites for the lad as QPR have been told where to go.

…His performance today was nothing short of pathetic though. He was a passenger for most of the game. 😐

      (Quote)

  8. I think Carroll would take a big wage cut and crawl on broken glass to get back to the Toon. Can see this happening in the summer for about £12 million and £ 60k a week

      (Quote)

  9. Did anyone watch Mansfield 2nd half assault on Liverpool today ,they had them rocking to the point they brought on the racist to get a second goal. Now if little old Mansfield can put that type of pressure on Pool then with our talent we should be able to do the same to any team in the PL .Trouble is Mansfield have something we don’t and so do Brighton ,it’s called fight and you can’t put a price on that.

      (Quote)

  10. THE KID maybe his performance was pathetic because he wants out of there and knows where he wants to go too .

      (Quote)

  11. The Kid I agree with you regarding Remy to Germany.

He wouldn’t fit into the brilliant Dortmund team, and to be honest they don’t need him either. Way too much for them to invest in a bench-warmer.

Regarding FC Schalke 04, they have made it somewhat unconvincingly through to the next round of the Champions League, but are cack in the league and have just bladdered there manager Huub Stevens. They will lose Lewis Holtby in the summer, although Huntelaar only last month extended his contract. In addition they have the very good and well liked Farfan on the right side, though he has been idling for a move for ages now. All in all, Schalke are a bit of a basket case at the moment, but I cannot see them buying Remy.

The bigger worry is that we buy him and hope he is the answer to all our problems. I think personally it will be a big gamble to take, especially since a lot of punters seem to have watched him lately and came up with the same “disinterested” tag. He isn’t going to turn into a blistering dynamic entity over night. For me a clear no. I just fear that we have put all our eggs in one basket, I hope I’m wrong cos we have to get the next few months spot on… 🙄

      (Quote)

  12. The toon coming up with some kind of cack and taking there eye of the ball under the disguise of “waiting until the summer for Andy Carroll” is exactly the distraction we don’t want.

What a HUGE gamble to take, although I really fear something like that may happen. Pardew has already used the “we need to be patient with our search for a striker” card. Is the guy crazy ?

      (Quote)

  13. Munich

I see where you are coming form and it is a big gamble, but having watched a lot of him in 2011 I think it would be worth it if we can get him. I say this because if he was on form there’s no way we would be able to attract him. The likes of Spurs, Arsenal etc would be interested and he would cost circa £15million. We have a chance to sign a great, off-form player for circa £8million, who looks as though he just needs a move to jump start his career. Even if he doesn’t hit the ground running in terms of goals he’ll still contribute in terms of build-up play, which is what we need to get the best out of Cisse, who is Ba’s real replacement in terms of goals.

      (Quote)

  14. The idea of Carroll coming back worries the **** out of me a bit if I’m honest like. There’s no doubting he’s a very good player it’s just the baggage that comes with him. £15m would be too much IMO – no more than £10m for me and he’d be on £60k pw with score bonuses.

I also don’t really like that tweet re Remy, so he’d come to the toon for his mates rather than the football or wanting to improve us. As The Kid says, he’s hardly playing well at the moment and £10m is a lot for us to pay to improve his social life.

      (Quote)

  15. Was reading that Lille want rid of Kalou in this transfer window , would be a decent loan move with option too buy ,he is a player that can play wide or through the middle and has pace and eye for goal .

      (Quote)

  16. Talk that pards has resigned…

I have just one thought. We constantly convince ourselves that we are a big club which we are.

In that case pards is the luckiest man alive to manage Newcastle he showed that last year in how well we did and the commitment he showed.

8 yr deal and all motivation evaporates along with our form.. Surely not a coincidence.

      (Quote)

  17. So our young signings over the past 3-4 years outside of Bigi are providing to be rather rubbish in the end and/or forever injured.

When is Graham Carr going to get criticism? He seems untouchable despite his young recruitment drive being **** so far. Another 8 year deal.

      (Quote)

  18. FJ,
Do you still maintain that Obertan is technically better than Gareth Bale 😯

      (Quote)

  19. Yeah, I meant technically as in the “tekkers” thing, the flicks and street style stuff. I’ve seen Obertan do more impressive stuff than Bale. Obviously Bale is more effective in an actual professional match but Obertan has a lot of potential in my eyes, he just needs it brought out and has shown that against Man Utd, Bordeaux and Arsenal this season – not exactly lousy teams.

You got a reply for my other comment now?

      (Quote)

  20. FJ

I don’t think it’s all about the players. I think the poor level of coaching is probably the main problem. I mean, Willie Donachie? Come on… 🙄

      (Quote)

  21. Funky – I understand your point. However these kids may have plenty of talent but the abject lazy display at Brighton highlighted complacency and an I’ve already made it attitude.

Something isn’t right at the club that the youngsters have no desire no commitment. They have almost wandered on and found themselves playing in a Newcastle shirt. They don’t appear to deserve it. Abeid is a prime example. Talent no doubt but he looked disinterested

This is why I despair at the amount of foreigners in our team. Not only does it eradicate any chances for us internationally but they have no pride In wearing the Newcastle shirt.

Homegrown talent is becoming a thing of the past. Barcelona had 10 out of 11 in their startin line up come through their youth system and all internationals. Mainly for Spain.

Why this young players don’t have pride playing for the toon is unthinkable. That’s why we mourned the loss of Carroll far harder than ba even though ba was far more reliable and prolific.

Carroll was ours English and played like he wouldnt again.

      (Quote)

  22. FJ,
In 40 yrs of following the Toon, Obertan is one of the worst players I have seen. He panics when the ball is at his feet and often makes the wrong decisions, Reminds me of two former **** wingers at NUFC, Franz Carr and Ian Stewart.
PACE is not enough young man 😉

      (Quote)

  23. The Kid,

You may well be correct, it is likely a mixture of a variety of reasons but Hatem Ben Arfa and Bigi have all come in and ran with it. Even Anita, after a slow start, has impressed when the team went even worse.

In respect of the young kids we’ve signed, I feel the major issue is they have been over-hyped to show we have a “youth policy”. As such, the management have heard this hype so much, they actually believe these guys are top quality and fell for the lie.

They aren’t even that young – most of our kids are now the age where they should be playing first team, it isn’t like they are all Adam Campbell’s age.

      (Quote)

  24. Tony,

I think he has more than just pace – I think his pace is a downfall if anything. He realises he is one of, if not the fastest in the league and relies on it instead of his ability. His most effective moments this season – all against top class teams – have been mixing pace with traditional jinky wing play.

If Pardew is determined to use Obertan as no more than pace – play him up front.

      (Quote)

  25. FJ,
I agree to disagree with you 🙂
If Obertan suddenly develops a brain, i will be the first to apologise to you. 😉

  26. As much as it may seem surprising I cannot see mike Ashley skimping this jan.

The premier league takes on unreal levels of sponsorship next year. If we get relegated it would be disastrous for Ashley. Short term investment would not only guarantee better chances of survival but a tidy sum of money for him to fool us into thinking he will reinvest.

He has to surely take the plunge this jan? Or are we in Denial??

  27. FJ,
Your avatar concerns me! Is it you with no top on 😯
If so you are possibly on the wrong blogs 😆

      (Quote)

  28. Tony,

That is not me. If it was, I wouldn’t be so miserable all the time, lol.

I am reading some people saying Remy will not sign for us because Schalke and Dortmund offer CL football – but isn’t Remy cup tied in Europe? Have Marseille played in Europe this year?

      (Quote)

  29. @Sharpy17 I doubt the story regarding Remy coming here because he has mates has no substance..

People said the same about Cisse because he was best mates with Ba because they were both from Senegal. It didnt keep Ba here.

I remember when ppl use to say Ronaldo was gonna sign for the Toon coz Bobby use to manage him at Barca.

Its all speculation, he’ll come for the money and hopefully because we can be a big club again, being mates with some will probably help him settle thats all.

      (Quote)

  30. “Obertan is technically better than Gareth Bale” lol thats why Sir Alex hardly played him and was delighted to ship him and receive 3mill. hes totally useless

If obertan didnt have pace you might as well play Ashley there instead. he would be totally ineffective.

      (Quote)

  33. The kid – your point regarding getting Remy off form is a very good one actually. Similar to Ben Arfa in a way. We got Benny off form, could you imagine only paying £5m for the kid the way he’s been playing this season?.
Sod it, lets go for it 😛

      (Quote)

  34. Mark #257

Spot on. Remy won’t sign because his mates are here. Surely what will happen is the player will speak to his mates about the club and find out if it’s a good place to be. I’m sure France’s RB signing on the other day would have strengthened our case too.

Now that QPR are out of the running I am quite confident we will get him.

With all of these French players coming in Ashley/Llambias surely have to be looking at our coaching staff. We need a Technical coach. Someone with a bit of pedigree.

      (Quote)

  35. Would anyone be interested in Kevin Doyle ❓
Great grafter, decent finisher and would be a perfect foil for Cisse imo.

      (Quote)

  36. Tony@261 ,Nah ,not for me mate,I have barely mastered the computer and my mobile is out the ark 😆

      (Quote)

  37. Sharpy

It just fits with how we have been operating recently – contract loopholes and off-form players.

Also, unlike QPR, we have already been mentioned by the player as a club he wouldn’t mind joining.

      (Quote)

  38. Tony ,I only need to call/text and more than that I can’t be arsed .What pisses me off is I got to put my glasses on to read /send a text 🙄 I need one of them simple ones with massive numbers for oap’s I reckon.

      (Quote)

  39. The Kid – **** it mate, all in – let’s get the little ******. If nowt else, he’ll fit right in if he’s out of form 😉

Tony – I’d rather have Danny Graham than Kevin Doyle to be honest, he’s younger and would probably cost the same or slightly less

      (Quote)

  40. That and Danny Graham can actually score a goal. Doesn’t Doyle only have about 9 goals for the past 5 years? The guy is a joker who has leeched off so a few teams now because he runs around a lot.

So does Mo Farah but you don’t want him up front.

      (Quote)

  41. Twitter in overdrive.
Pardew has resigned because NUFC have accepted a 17m from the spuds
    for HBA. 😛

      (Quote)

  42. I read we are looking to make a loan move with a view to signing in the summer for Matt Tubbs. Not really, I made it up.

There are several players you can sign for £2m – £3m if you want to cheaply get through to the summer. Jason Puncheon for example.

Charlie Austin at Burnley is a guy who is very similar to Danny Graham and Gary Hooper – score everywhere they play but as they started lower league and worked up honestly, they are never given respect.

      (Quote)

  43. Here’s more from another reliable French journo.

    Julien Laurens ‏@LaurensJulien

Redknapp didn’t convince Remy to join #qpr. The forward said no. Not much more luck with M’vila who is not keen either to join the club.

I’m going to really enjoy watching them go down. 😆

      (Quote)

  44. Just a couple of comments about Danny Graham. He turns 28 in August. He is a 1 in 3 scorer which is pretty decent. If the price tag of 8-10 M pounds is correct it puts him at the upper end of our transfer payouts so not sure. Would he be better than Remy who is younger and a French international? I’m not sure but if we could get Remy for 10M I think I would go for him. Graham would be a nice replacement for Shola though. We would never spend that kind of dosh on a third choice striker however.

      (Quote)

  45. Danny Graham?

How would this fix our problem? We are looking to play 433 and he is a central striker.

      (Quote)

  46. Funky – yeah mate, I’d take any of those 3 over Shola, Ranger or Xisco.
I thought Rhodes would have done a good job for us as well before he went to Bburn. I think we need grafters and players who they are lucky to be at NUFC and will give it their all – similar to Perchino.
I would have also take Chris Woods who ended up at Foxes – £2m for a free scoring 21yr old and you’re always gonna get ya money back.
Nevermind, hoping for an interesting week in the market.

TSG – I’ll quit the fucking toon if there’s any truth to that rumour mate!!!

      (Quote)

  47. Only Artur Boruc’s outstretched leg came between the Senegal striker and a hat-trick as he tore apart Southampton’s defence. Finally, on Sunday, he took the chance to reflect.
‘It was very busy,’ he said. ‘I have all the respect for Newcastle, because Newcastle are a big club with a big history, but when you come to Chelsea it’s a step forward. I can understand [why the Newcastle fans might be unhappy].
‘It’s not like I wanted to leave them in trouble but, if you have Chelsea wanting you, this kind of club are not coming in every day for you.’

We won’t be able to replace Ba this window. He is one of the best strikers the club has ever had. Do Chelsea really need to spend £35M or whatever on a striker when they can get Demba Ba for £7.5M? Ba will score in pretty much every game, the article says Ba hopes to make the step up. What step up, he is there already.

      (Quote)

  48. It isn’t necessarily a fix for us unless Cisse goes down Kid. I would say Shola is supposed to be a central striker as well but he seems to lack the striker part. I’m not recommending Graham just pointing out some facts because his name keeps cropping up with us. I would prefer a younger player who can actually play on the wing like Remy. Surely watching Obertan again on Saturday has made people realize he isn’t going to make it. I wanted to see him in there but really he wastes his pace and doesn’t know what to do in the final third. He just muddles around and screws it up 90% of the time. Obertan is such a divisive player with the supporters, like Perch, Willo, Jonas, and Shola. They all have occassional decent games but mainly they are fill-ins now who usually won’t make an impact. We can’t carry so many of this type of player. Keep Perch as a CDM but shed the rest if possible. Jonas and Shola will probably have to stay because of their new contract extensions unless we can sell them but that was the mistake of management.

      (Quote)

  49. if we didnt have a stupid age limit on our squad we could of had Clint Dempsey knocking goals in for us..

      (Quote)

  50. Why do people keep picking out Obertan? He wasn’t anywhere near the worst player on Saturday and his position seems to be LEFT wing and he was played out on the RIGHT to fit in Sammy Ameobi.

Are we really going to ignore Obertan’s effective games and link up with Marveaux against Man Utd and Arsenal and him being our best player in Europe – because he had a bad game against Brighton?

No wonder players don’t want to sign or leave quick if fans are like this.

      (Quote)

  51. Ba will score plenty more if he gets playing time with Chelsea. It will be a huge embarrassment for us. His goal total for the season could come close to 30 if he stays fit and plays enough. Cisse had better be prepared for the increased pressure now that he is our only real striker. If he folds under the pressure we may go down and Pardew may be gone.

      (Quote)

  52. FJ – Obertan was dog *****.
A few devent runs was about it. Every time he got into a crossing position he dighered. At one point he actually passed the ball to the decender 3 yards in front of him whilst contemplating taking him on. Aweful. I’ with Tony – the lad has no brain.

      (Quote)

  53. I think we have given Obertan a lot of leeway Funky Jesus but I just don’t see enough from him. How many goals does he actually create for us when he’s out there? He is a very poor crosser of the ball in general and he is very uncertain when defended tightly. He has had a lot of chances over the last 2 seasons and really hasn’t impressed in more than a handfull of matches. To me he is a real enigma. I think he drove Ferguson crazy at ManU as well but he finally gave up on him. I think we will eventually do the same.

      (Quote)

  54. Fair enough – different strokes for different folks.

All I can say is we said ALL this about Wayne Routledge and now he is a first teamer at Swansea, getting regular goals and assists and some people now wonder if Pardew got it wrong with him.

We’ve been knocking the coaching all night on here – ever wonder if that is the reason Obertan isn’t hitting full flow or is he the exception to bad coaching while everyone else is good but being coached wrong, lol.

      (Quote)

  55. @funkyjesus

I could name about 10 impressive moves/runs/flicks that Obertan has produced since he signed. I watched him the whole game v Brighton and he swans about with no urgency or fight. He doesnt chase and if a player is close he never attempts to pressure him or tackle.

Got to be Pardews biggest dud for me.. imo

      (Quote)

  56. That’s fair enough kid but what are his totals with us? I think his Prem totals are 2 goals, 4 assists in 28 appearances over 11/2 seasons or so. He was supposed to be a great offensive player with his pace and technical skills but I just don’t see it often enough. What to do with him? Not sure but he reminds me a bit of the early Jonas. Lots of possession, some fancy moves in midfield, some decent pace at the time, but no end product.

      (Quote)

  57. The Kid – he’s a player that scores more goals than the other strikes back Cisse up, but no way I’d pay £8-10m for Graham like – maybe £5-6m tops if he’s 28.
Seemingly Bpool only want £6m for Ince – Lpool don’t want to pay more than £4m. He’s only 20yrs so I’d be hijacking that one like.

FJ – the reason people slate Obertan is coz he’s **** man!. Simple as that. Walked down the tunnel with his hands behind his back as tho he was strolling in the park – and that was probably the most interested he looked all day. The kids a lazy footballer or athlete should I say coz I’ve seen one decent game from him in a toon shirt. Get rid for me like.

Just checked and Tony Adams is coaching out in Azerbaijan 😯
What a waste Tony – fancy a job at the toon kid? 😉

      (Quote)

  58. for an established player fighting for his place in a team of young’uns he did pretty poor, hence his substitution after only 70mins.

      (Quote)

  59. Liverpool buying Tom Ince for £4m – £6m after selling him for £250,000 about two years ago. It’s the reverse of us selling Carroll for big money then buying back at a fraction.

What a bizarre transfer policy they have.

      (Quote)

  60. I’m frustrated thinking about Routledge as well FJ. It makes me wonder about coaching again too. Routledge just looks much more confident and comfortable with Swansea than he did with us. If Obertan left us and the same thing happened I would really start to worry. As it is the coaching staff can’t be as bad as the standings suggest this year or as good as the standings indicated last year surely. That would mean they are probably average, no better and of course they do better when the team is winning and in a positive mood. Only the best can raise the games of players who are low in confidence and I don’t think we have that kind of group of coaches at the moment.
