Has Captain Colo played his last game for us? And who should succeed the curly-haired one?

Colo's gannin yem...
Colo’s gannin yem…
It’s nice to see that Fabricio Coloccini has been given permission to travel home to Argentina for a bit of treatment on his back.

Apparently our El Capitano has fractured two bones in his back after completing a rather acrobatic overhead kick clearance against Southampton over a week ago.

Colo is being treated by the Argentinian FA so it’s not like he’s gone home on a jolly or anything like that, but whilst he is there I suspect some of those “personal problems” that became apparent during January will be on the agenda. If you recall it was San Lorenzo who wanted him in January, and Colo wanted to go to them, but the fact they couldn’t offer any money for the player proved to be a rather large stumbling block and in the end there was no way out of his fresh new deal with United so he stayed, at least until the summer anyway.

So here he is pictured at a San Lorenzo reserve game, which is unlikely to quell the speculation that he’ll be away in the summer. This image was taken from San Lorenzo’s Twitter account and is no doubt being used as a PR initiative by them, but it doesn’t bode well for the longer term future of Fabricio Coloccini and United.

To be honest I don’t really have a problem with it. He supports them apparently, his Dad works there, and just because he’s fractured two bones in his back it doesn’t mean that he has to be strapped to a bed to recover or anything like that. In fact my Brother-in-Law has done much the same and is pretty much free to move about as he likes as long as he wears this bodysuit thing under his clothes which you can hardly notice in fairness.

However if, or when, Colo leaves he will be leaving more than a hole in our defence. He is our current Club Captain so that is a role that will need filling should he pack his bags and head home. Who is the man to fill that role though?

Yohan Cabaye has worn the armband in recent weeks and looks to be at the head of a French invasion which sees many of his compatriots line up along side him each week. Cheik Tiote has also worn the armband on occasion as have Jonas Gutierrez and Steven Taylor. For me Cabaye is the man for the job but who would be your pick to succeed Colo if he does leave in the summer?

  1. Cabaye no question for me as well. Quality player, team member and bloke!

But riddle me this plz Toonsy…I’m no doctor but if I had 2 broken bones in my back I wouldn’t be sitting, hunched over a little wooden chair somewhere in Argentina.

The initial news was that he’d be out around 7 weeks from the initial diagnosis which meant Colo would be back in training around the end of April/start of May and if we’re honest Colo isn’t going to come back and risk aggrevating the injury but he may just pop back to say his goodbye’s then that will, unfortunately be that.

It does seem rather coincidental that his injury lasts just long enough to keep him out until he can go home again though doesn’t it?

Such a shame as nobody was happier than me when he signed the contract that everybody thought would keep him here until he retired.

Goodbye and good luck Colo. 🙁

  2. Personally, I think the whole thing is all smoke and mirrors . He may well be hurt, but I think its a done deal.
Give em hell themorra neet lads /Toon 2-1. Howaaaaaaaaaaaaaay the Lads.

  3. More on Hatem:

Pardew added: `My reading with Hatem is that he is in a good place. He knows with the injury he sustained we have to be very careful of because more importance is his welfare going forward.
`We can’t take any risks. He had a slight strain and we are just checking it is nothing more than that and I think that will be the diagnosis so the alarm bells are not ringing and he is not in a bad place with his psychology so I don’t think there is anything untoward in that.
`If I am honest, with this game in particular, him missing is not going to make a great impact because the team is in a good place and we can beat them without him, no problems.’

Well that’s OK then Alan. Now you can try him again at -6c on an artificial pitch.

  4. <<<<<<< dos not think collo will be a big miss meself, the simple fact is hes way to slow for the way we want to play attacking football and any1 that watched the barca v ac milan game just has to look were there back 4 camps on the half way line.Which we cant really do cause of collos lack of pace

      (Quote)

  5. So pissed off with the news on Hatem . . . but yeah, Cabaye for me. He looks the perfect midfield general.

  6. GEORGIO
thought it might happen playing him on that plastic pitch wernt smart but pards really had no choice in the end

      (Quote)

  7. Well it takes approx 17 hours to fly to Agentina ,even first class it’s a long time if you have a couple of broken bones in your back I would of thought 😕 ,not sure I’d wanna do it.

Good question Toonsy and I voted Cabaye as with all our French speaking guys it makes sense ,plus the fact he seems a natural leader and I think the others all respect him too. One day I would like to see Saylor as captain too.

      (Quote)

  8. <<<<<<<<< thinks cisse would of played meself if it wernt for his virus only really the young kid and afra left he could play there and that match wernt the right 1 to be playing the young lad

  9. I think Cabs has done a great job as captain since Collo has been out and IMO is the obvious choice for the armband next season with Saylor vice captain. The great thing now though is that we have a number of leaders on the pitch with Debuchy, MYM and Sissoko also capable of standing up to be counted when needed.

Colo has done a great job for us and was huge last season, but being honest he’s not been too canny at all this season. I don’t think he’s played his last game for us just yet but I definately see this as his last season with us.

      (Quote)

  10. The Benny injury is a right **** up ,I thought clairfontaine were setting him right ,what a bloody waste of time that was.

      (Quote)

  11. Sharpy@14 ,I agree he’s not as fast as he was but he’s an intelligent player and having to play alongside Wilo instead of Saylor did him no favors imo.

      (Quote)

  12. Ice – from the last thread, I hope my wishful thinking is correct but time will tell. Regarding Marv, I’ve called for him to be shown the exit door many a time so far this season – not because I think he’s **** (unlike my opinion of Obertan) but because I’ve seen too many times him not give 100% and it does my head in that. It was the same with Laurent Robert, if Marv upped his workrate then he’d be in the starting 11 far more regularly IMO

      (Quote)

  13. <<<<<<<< thinks collo has defo played his last game for us meself and him and williamson will be out the door this summer which leaves us looking for 2 new centre backs next season

  14. My main choice would be Saylor, but voted Cabs as at this moment in time it makes more sense.
On Colo I have no doubts hes played his last game for us, and we just have to get on with life without him he was a good CB but a **** captain so we just have to get another good CN as for captain it’s not a problem as imo we have a few players that would make better captains.

  15. hope ben afra aint turning into a nother K Dyer, promised so much but always injured any 1 know whats the most number of matchs afra has started in a row for us

  16. Kim – Sir Bobby Moore couldn’t have coped with Willo as a partner!!. That’s said, Colo has made some mistakes this year that were solely down to him. He’s been the best CB NUFC have had during my time supporting the club though and for that I will always be grateful to him, despite his antics in Jan.

      (Quote)

  17. I still hope we can keep Coloccini, the fact he was at San Lorenzo watching a reserve match meens none the f*** up. If not, I hope we’ll make something big for his last match of the season at SJP vs Arsenal. For me he’s the best CB we had at the club, with Woodgate. And he was not a **** captain, he was an inspirationnal player, that doesn’t means than I had to be kind of Nolan figure, last season Williamson looked great when he played alongside him, and I STaylor improved too by playing alongside him. The problem is, we didn’t improve squad as we should this summer, and it was difficult to be as good that last year with injuries. If he leaves, I want Cabaye or Steven Taylor if fit as team Captain. But for me Coloccini remains a Toon Legend.

  18. not a patch on Kevin Nolan in the captains dept,some1 who talked to the fans and when he spoke looked like he felt honored to be the captain

      (Quote)

  19. So you mean that Coloccini never felt honored to be Newcastle United’s captain because he never talked to the fans?? On the pitch at his best he played like a real captain, I don’t Ask more from him!

  21. @ToonArmyElite – I never said he was great this season, but who was untill the transfert window?? For me Only Davide Santon and Ben Arfa before his injury! Since the Aston Villa Match, Coloccini played at his best level. The same goes for Cabaye, who has never been as good as now, same goes for Steven Taylor and Jonas, whether you like it or not, in view of the fact that peeps always find an easy target, it was Willo and Simmo, now it’s Jonas Tioté and Santon.

      (Quote)

  23. <<<<<<<<<< wonders what the other players thought of collo trying to jump ship in january i would hardly call it inspirationnal meself bud 🙁

      (Quote)

  24. Sharpy@17 ,Laurent Robert was a good player but prone to diving early doors before Sir Bobby put him straight on it. Maybe Pards needs to take the same action with Marv but on consistancy not diving 😕

  25. Sharpy says, “Regarding Marv, I’ve called for him to be shown the exit door many a time so far this season … because I’ve seen too many times him not give 100% and it does my head in that.

I’ve never seen him not give 100%. I’ve seen him not be entirely match fit, and disappearing at times, but then I’ve often see Tiote in the thick of it and he gets criticised for that. He won’t get fully match fit if Pards won’t back him 100%.

Ice says, “Marv has the most assist than any other player in club (6) not bad for the amount of time on pitch imo” I would add that he has made loads of opportunities too that haven’t quite ended in a goal.

      (Quote)

  26. Just seen Pards on SkySports News. I nearly spat a mouthful of tea when he said of Shola, “He’s a fabulous person and player and we’re very, very lucky to have him”. 😯

His words were funny enough, but what did it for me was the stunned silence from the journos followed by Pards’ apprehensive, almost embarrassed, look around the room as if the journo’s were waiting for the punchline. 😳 😆

      (Quote)

  27. TAE – Colo may not be the fastest but I don’t think he’s particularly slow such that it would concern me at all.

      (Quote)

  28. I wonder if the Colo injury is sufficient to stop him playing and we can get something from his insurance. Better than getting nowt from a mutual termination of contract.
Benny gets his sicknote signed just in time to miss another game. Turning out to be another Dyer at this rate. At least it will put other clubs off coming in for him in the Summer.
Pardew claims he will be playing a strong side against Anzhi but no doubt he will play Shola (why can’t Shola get an extended sick note? ) and Campbell will get to sit on the bench to watch the entire game.
    Cynical ? Moi ???

      (Quote)

  29. The big difference between Benny and Dyer is that Dyer didn’t score goals or make them. Dyer was the oh so nearly man, just like Shaun Wright Phillips.

      (Quote)

  30. I can remember saying to my brother Dyer was better than Gerrard he still laughs at me even now 😀

    Cabaye for captain for sure.

People seem too be thinking our board will just let Colo leave for nothing. Have you learned nothing these past few years?

  31. On topic, Yohan by a mile. Still don’t think Colo should be at the footie, he should be apologising to his wife for being a c*nt and hoping she’ll take him back, assuming it’s how we think it is. If she doesn’t he can watch the footie and head back here, raise the funds to buy his contract out…

I don’t agree that Colo was a **** club captain. Ideally he should have spoken to the media more but I remember reading several interviews how proud he was to be club captain, how him and Jonas are always the first in training leading by example and ofcourse all the behind the scenes commitments he did on behalf of the club as partof his duties.
So no he wasn’t the all round package but neither was the not so saintly Nolan who was complicit in getting his mate to move to Cesspool etc

  40. Ice @ 47 I tend to agree with that, but if the stories regarding Colo and a bit on the side are true then maybe he should have thought about his family first 😉 . on him staying when we went down, I don’t know but I never heard of many teams after him as he was **** that season and he was on £80+ k a week so did he stay with us through loyalty or because no one would take him ??? I do agree that he has turned out to be one of the best CB we have had, but I still maintain that he was IMO a **** captain and has never been a leader. and I can only ever remember 1 or 2 interview , I know people say he wasn’t into talking to fans etc but you wouldn’t has guessed that when he wrote the love letter to his San Morino family after he failed to get an escape route from the Club he captains, while that same club was fastly being dragged into relegation trouble 😕

      (Quote)

  41. Ice I meant to add if Colo’s intentions was 100% about his family why didn’t he just get compassionate leave or just fuk off back to Argentina in Jan, why did he hang about and muddy the water while trying to get the club to give him away for free to San Morino, as I said if it was just his family he was worried about he would have took the 1st flight out ❓

      (Quote)

  44. As for leading by example ? so when he let his head drop in lots of games this season that was the example he should have been setting to the other players ❓ is that the example your talking about 😕 or the fact he wanted to fuk of for free in jan when we were deep in trouble ? are they the examples of your type of leader ❓ because I expect more from a leader

      (Quote)

  45. lol ok you never said that…. haha

Our best player last year and BPL team of the year was he a **** captain then? when we finished 5th

When he lets “his head drop” lol The whole team have been dreadful up until recently. You could say the same for just about everyone in our team.

Again you seem to be so ****-hurt over this letter to San Lorenzo 😀 So what he wants to go home to Argentina no one really knows why. Why is he a disgrace for that? lol

  46. Prem @ 42 😆 😆 Those latinos, I can’t work them out. This new guy was as reticent as Colo. I thought he’d had a malfunction after he was wheeled onto the balcony. He was like that picture of Colo above. Like the popes, Colo’s got a lot of apologising to do for past sins and indiscretions.

TAE – I think its a bit harsh claiming Colo’s slow just because that other dirty, cheating little latino got the better of him.

  51. Santii – Okay, so the pope hasn’t apologised for the crusades or the inquisitions, and centuries of violence and homophobia. But be careful. Although Suarez is a dirty cheat and happens to be latino or hispanic, it doesn’t read too good when you step back from it. Remember what happened to Big Ron. You don’t dislike your bro that much do you?

      (Quote)

  52. MC – Got to disagree. Sometimes, after a lot of time has passed, people tend to remember the best bits and reputations grow. I remember JW and PA very well, and believe Colo has done better in the b&w imho.

  54. I don’t think you can doubt Colo’s ability, he’s still a good player, last year was a great player although this year its seemed his heart wasn’t in it. As for how he is as a captain-I think he’s good at keeping people calm and focused when we’re doing well, but ***** once the pressure is on. Really, that is a true test of a captain…and the same can be said for a manager I suppose. But we seem to be playing better without a player who last year was probably our player of the year…says a lot really.

But like Dave, I expected more loyalty from him, if he was porking other women that’s his business but it doesn’t give him an excuse to go crying to Argentina and expect us to let him go for free. Pathetic antics if true, but if he and Lorenzo can muscle up some doller I guess he can ****** off with my thanks 😉

Bayern have been in the final the last two years, something has to give. They’ve also got the best team that they’ve had for many a year, their defence is far better than both Barca’s and Real’s, tonight was unusual, they had the mindset of just sitting back on the aggregate score. Also Dortmund are beast and are the wildcard to go through the main pack.

      (Quote)

  58. @Sharpy re previous thread
But these are back up players. What is the alternative? We don’t even have Europe next year, so are you suggesting we need players to replace people like Obertan/Williamson for cup games?!
If Coloccini stays, and the rest of the squad remains intact, all we need is a young back up striker. No other signings imo.
Yeah it would be nicer to see less of people like Willo, but it’s just not feasible.
And suggesting Shola’s Europa record isn’t decent is madness! Who cares who the opposition is, the back up players main role is in the cups in fairness.

Saying Colo was a **** captain is blasphemous. You’d be one of the first to say a defence of Simpson/Williamson/R Taylor is dire. Yet we had one of the best clean sheet records last year, one man has a lot to do with that. Arguably the best CB we ever had, sure a vocal captain is nice, an English XI would be nice, no substitute for true quality and leadership by example. His performances didn’t drop this Jan even when he wanted out, so you can’t question him there.
