To explain this article before I get going… This is a rough overview of just a few stats and then some gossip and ideas. I’ve divided the strikers into three groups. What we have, who we have been linked with, and few outsiders.
The stats I’m using are career data where available and readily available, I’m far too lazy to do in depth stuff. There is a bit of a profile age, value, gossip etc, then goals per minute. So therefore the lower the number the better. So a figure of under 180 means better than 1 goal every two games, whereas a figure of over 300 means an Ameobi. Sorry about that Shola is actually better than that. The last figure is the assists rate. What this is is the number of assists divided by games played. So not minutes so me being lazy there. This time the bigger the number the better.
So who have we got currently?
Pappis Cisse is 28 has a value (according to transfermarkt) of about £13m scores every 175 minutes and with 21 assists from 268 games that gives a ratio of 0.078. What we need is a partner.
Yoan Gouffran is 27, £6.6m 282mins and 27/317 = 0.085
Gabriel Obertan is 24 £2.2m 415mins and 22/194 = 0.113
Hatem Ben Arfa is 26 £12m 343mins 30/236 = 0.127
Shola Ameobi is 31 £1.8m 276 mins 26/350 = 0.074
Sylvian Marveaux is 27 £2.6m 409mins 25/162 = 0.154
Sammy Ameobi is 21 £2.6m 360 mins 7/61 = 0.114
Adam Campbell is 18 unvalued 182 mins 9/30 = 0.300
So on that basis Papiss Cisse is our best striker with a goal every 175 minutes and Sylain Marveaux has the best assist rate. Adam Campbell has superb figures and should be featuring more often. Whether he is ready to be a regular starter is another matter.
Now for names we have been linked with…
Kevin Gameiro we have been linked with in the past before he took a big money move to PSG, which hasn’t worked out. He is currently not wanted and hence available probably discounted from the £8m+ transfermarkt valuation. He is 26 years old, scores every 194 minutes and has 41 assists from 267 games = 0.153. Whilst he is not the best striker from our big five statistically he is the best in assists by a long way. Up in the Marveaux region. He is described as fast dribbler. Wages may be a problem, he has two years left on his contract and is on about £55kpw.
Bafetimbi Gomis at 27 would normally be expensive at £12.5m but Lyon are keen to sell as they need the money. Gomis has made all the right noises saying that he won’t be forced out etc, however, don’t be surprised if he moves. With a goal every 184 minutes and 36 assists from 370 games = 0.097 he may be the answer. He has been described as Baby Drogba.
Andre-Pierre Gignac also at 27 is a reasonable option at a valuation of £7.5m however with goals at 211 minutes and only 25 assists from 288 games = 0.087 he would not be my choice. He is however described as powerful and dangerous with an aerial presence. Also I know of no gossip that indicates that we may be pursuing him He currently plays for Olympique Marseille.
Loic Remy of course was supposed to be our Christmas Present before he moved to QPR. Available at less than the quoted £8.8m, his wages and court case might prevent us moving for him despite Pardew’s admiration. At 26 his record of a goal every 199 minutes and 24 assists from 243 games = 0.099 are in the right ball park.
Darren Bent is 29 available at well below the £7.9m valuation and a proven EPL goalscorer. With a goal every 182 minutes he is the most prolific of these five players, and with 33 assists from 350 games = 0.094 he is no greedier than the others.
So for me It’s down to who would best suit playing alongside Cisse whose figures surpass all of the above.
Outsiders…
There have been various names mentioned by people on the blog, some of whom I can remember others I can’t so if your favourite is not mentioned please post below.
Brown Ideye at 24 has been mentioned as the next Drogba I think. Anyway at a market value of £9.7m he ain’t a cheap alternative. But with a goal every 180 minutes he looks like someone to match Cisse. And with 32 assists from 219 games = 0.146 his assist rate is very respectable.
Kevin Villand is only 20 so at £7.9m I’m looking for something special. At 215 minutes per goal and 32 assists from 188 games = 0.170 he also looks like a good shout.
My to are Phillip Hosiner from Austria Vienna who at 24 and only £2.2m is a bargain with just 140 minutes per goal and 27 assists from 227 games = 0.119. I would also like to add Angel Correa who at 18 is £2.6m but with a goal every 177 mins and 3 assists from his 11 games = 0.3 he looks a prospect. The other thing I like about him is he plays for San Lorenzo so could be part of any deal with Colo going the other way.
So my choice?
I would have a strike team of Papiss Cisse, Brown Ideye, Phillipe Hosiner, Yoan Gouffran, with Adam Campbell and Angel Correa keeping them honest. However that may be too many for some.
It’s hard to speculate when the summer has been thus far so underwhelming but please feel free to post your thoughts below.
Aussie – What we need is a manager with a plan. Not AP experimenting with Sissoko still. How can Pardew not know which position to play him already?

I expect nowt but hope for a lot during transfer windows, I’m invariably let down but I haven’t got the strength or inclination to spend a whole window being angry so I wait until the it closes before blowing my top…or not(in the unlikely event we do well in one).

Aussie – your point about Core players improving….It does often work both ways…..Every player says that seeing good players arrive motivate, excite and inspire you, and the opposite happened last year after we did so well and bought nobody in.

Aussie – Yip. You’re right my friend. The manager would of been replaced in my opinion. Pardew has struggled to get the best out of his team, and when you don’t spend massive amounts on players, getting the best out of them is imperative.
Pardew lacks a belief that runs through the team no matter who plays, a style that makes players jobs easier. I take Liverpool as a case in point, a lot of their reserves won 4-0 yesterday because of this idea of how to play no matter who plays. They lose Suarez and come and batter us 6-0 at home. Arsenal’s reserves used to get to the final of the Cups almost every year. Wigan, winging the FA Cup beating Man City, they absolutely outplayed them and had some squad players in there as well.
But we have a manager trying Cisse and Sissoko as wingers! I find it hard to accept this to be honest.
That was my point Aussie, but you can absolutely argue it’s only part of the problem, but if AP ends up with Bent then I believe he has got his own way, therefore really making him the entire problem.

I’d play Cisse up front with Marv behind him at the moment, with Gouff and Ben Arfa on the wings.
Then Sissoko and Cabaye in midfield. (Tiote and Anita) to fight for a first team place.
Santon, Colo, Taylor, and Debuchy at the back and Krul as keeper.
We have Hadaira, Mbiwa, Willo (too weak) and Raylor as cover.
Up front we NEED a striker to compete with Cisse. Then we NEED a creative skillfull winger/midfielder to compete with Ben Arfa and Marveaux.
Finally we NEED a versatile defender who can fill in at centre back or right back. Thought we had one in Perch but he’s gone so…
Three quality players. Then our only problem playing wise is our **** manager.

After his incredible stay of execution and time to mull over his part in last seasons catastrophe during his extended holidays was hoping to have heard a more up beat and contrite Pardew to instil confidence in the fans and the team. But not one bit of it, he sounds just as bad as last season, doesn’t know where to play some of his key players, still doesn’t have a defined style of play he can communicate to players to follow, is clearly fizzin that we have had the temerity to question him and his tactics last year. The sooner this man goes the sooner we have a chance of using the players we have effectively. Even Schteve bloody McClaren would do a better job than him.

Prem – Thanks for the new article mate and you’re bang on that we desperately need to add goals to our team. I’m not discounting the players you’ve put forward because I agree that they are all realistic options but I do also thing there may be a shock option as well mate. Personally, I’d love to think that they are going to pull a rabbit out the hat but I’m afraid I 100% believe we putting all of our attentions on signing Bent and Remy. Pardew has openly mentioned those 2 players and IMO they are too transparent to have done this as a decoy. We wanted Remy in Jan so it makes sense to me that he’s a one we’ll go for again and Pardew is a big fan of Bent from his time at Charlton.
I could live with Bent and Remy to be fair, but I think we need a Scott Sinclair or Tom Ince up front as well for me.

Personally I can’t see any reason why Cisse can’t wear a “non-Wonga” shirt to be honest. Unless of course Wonga spit there dummy out and insist on it. However, I get the feeling that Wonga, due to the seemingly sensitive nature of there business, would be in a position to back off and let Cisse play in a different shirt. It’s just a gut feeling that I have. I’d be curious to know what the real deal is, who are the real culprits ? Are Wonga putting pressure on the toon ? Are the Toon putting pressure on Cisse ? Regarding players shirts and sponsors and stuff. Mario Götze was officially unveiled last week as FC Bayerns great new signing from Dortmund. He was photographed holding an FC Bayer shirt showing his name on the back of the shirt…where of course a nice little logo from one of the worlds largest sporting, and FC Bayerns main sponsors also resided. Unfortunately Götze was wearing a tee shirt from one of the worlds other largest sports sponsors (in fact his own personal sponsor)…but no the same as FC Bayerns.
The upshot was there was a humongous cafuffle, and Götze was fined in fact I believe by FC Bayern…. 20k EUROS OR SOMEWHERe along those lines. Peanuts for the lad of course, but the principle involved is quite interesting. Is a player, as own property, FORCED to accept the sposnor of his mother club, although he has another sponsor as himself ? Could this be another Bosman-like scenario ? Maybe the upshot is every player playing in a toon strip with his own sponsor logo on the chest ? 😉

If the blogs I read are typical of the feeling on the ground, i.e. on Tyneside, then there is a huge ground swell of negativity building against ALL things toon., especially Ashley, Pardew and Kinnear. I haven’t read so much negativity before the start of a new season ever in my years of following the toon. 😯 The toons PR group, and Ashley himself need to go more public and get to grips with things.

I have to be honest, I really can’t make my mind up about this ‘Wonga’ carry on.
I understand the religious beliefs of our Muslim players, and part of me thinks both Wonga and the club should jointly say that they have a choice to wear Wonga or not.
However, I am not a religious man but ethically I believe Wonga are parasites and I think our strip looks ugly with it slapped across the front.

Ice – this is the cause of my indecision mate. Cisse clearly doesn’t want to wear it for religious beliefs – yet Tiote has said he doesn’t have an issue with it. So some people’s religious values are greater than other and some people’s ethical values are greater than others – even on here. I know Kim was passionately against the Wonga sponsorship – I less so (despite thinking they are parasites).
The club can hardly say – those who want to wear Wonga can and those who don’t for religious reasons or otherwise – don’t have to. I can’t see Wonga going for that like. So based on that, I can kind of understand why the club are saying everyone wears it.

Just listened to a podcast by a brit really in the know about Cloggy football, and he was shooting his coco going on about Bony. Her reckons he is absolutely top notch, and a snip at 12 million. The same bloke reckons the makkems signing Altidore is absolutely pish. Reckons he will score max 3 goals this season, even with 25 starts under his belt, and is willing to bet that the bloke will be on the bench by 1st of November.

MM@134 the bloke you listened too is 100% right Bony is top notch and Altidore will make as big an impact for the scum as Xisco did for us , truly he is that ***** .Cant believe he scored so many last season . This lack of transfer activity really is starting to worry me ,i hope too **** that joe did some work from his holiday residence and sorted a couple of signings to be finalised in the early part of this coming week.
