What have we become?

Losing influence?
Losing influence?
If you are a fan of Alan Pardew then look away now. This is not backed up by stats, it’s purely my opinion based on what I have observed with my own eyes – so if you don’t like it, that’s your bag. But you’re wrong! Haha.

Every single member of our squad is absolutely clueless in the final third. They don’t know what to do with themselves when they find the ball at their feet with a chance of shooting or putting in that final pass! It was painful watching us against West Ham. The only time we genuinely threatened them was when Sammy Ameobi fluked a cross onto the opposition post and even then Gouffran bricked himself.

I used to think Obertan was a headless chicken, but maybe Pardew just got to him faster than he got to everyone else?!

OK we have not been helped by a lack of spending, but would it matter if we did sign more players? It’s obvious to every man and his dog that Pardew has no idea how to set these players up in a style that suits their natural game.

It’s like he has intentionally gone out to find square pegs (the players – Cabaye, Sissoko etc) and tried to force them into round holes (his own rigid style of play). We are screwed. I’m not saying it’s all down to him. Our players have to take some of the blame for a complete failure to show any pride in their own performances, but I see no intention by Pards to allow certain players to approach the game according to their own positive attributes.

I have quickly realised recently that our signings have been cheap because THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE WORTH. Yes we have one or two players capable of the odd bit of magic, so so do most teams in the Premier League. The truth is, we have a squad full of average players being managed by yet another English head coach who’s head is stuck in the early 90’s.

We don’t have one out and out winger capable of consistently crossing the ball, we only have one decent striker and our back line is not convincing. For all the positives that come with Santon – he is a full back that appears incapable of putting a string of strong defensive displays together! Why is he so special exactly? Debuchy? I know he needs bedding in time, but right now Simpson is the better player for me. Steven Taylor is still prone to the odd complete implosion.

Take a look at central midfield, where we are ‘well stocked’. With what exactly? Our only holding midfielder Tiote lost the plot about 18 months ago and not managed to find form since. Cabaye is clearly on his way out. Anita is a steady player, but does not pull up trees going forward or back – leaving who? Gosling? Sicknote that never lived up to the hype. Bigi? Sissoko is a proper midfielder, but seems stunted by our game plan. A lot of potential, but we all now what Pardew and company do to prospects!

The only player capable of turning a game on it’s head is Benny – and he is constantly stunted by being played out of position, or surrounded by players that have NO CLUE how to express themselves or put pressure on the opposition. My point is our midfield is well stocked with ok, steady players. But Benny aside not one of them is actually top notch at anything specific such as tacking, scoring, crossing or even passing. You know, the basics…..

I am struggling to remember a more boring Newcastle United team. We lack imagination, drive, zeal, heart. I cant even accuse the lads of playing ‘Wimbledon’ style football. At least they had a purpose, a unity and a plan. We just clear the lines then dither a bit before giving the aback. It’s embarrassing to think that these are the same colours being worn as the ‘entertainers’ era. What a disgrace.

If we played to our guys’ strengths and just went for it – what would we have to lose? We might lose the odd game? We do anyway. All the time! If we are ever going to compete with the likes of Spurs on the world market again, we need to focus on a brand. People still remember the ‘entertainers’ all over the world. We can still get that back. We just need a coach to bring a similar kind of football back and some clever PR to draw the fans in. Yes it’s a bit risky, but why not give ourselves an identity that the neutrals want to be a part of, regardless of the results? I really don’t see how it can go any worse than our current course is taking us. Hell it might even pay of Ashley’s loan a bit quicker if it takes off!

I’m not convinced this squad is a genuine topeight side even with a top notch manager at the helm, but I am sure as hell that what quality our players do have is not being utilised by our current coaching staff. Look at all the ‘quality’ youth players we have ahem…nurtured…over the past three seasons. Thank God at least that’s successful because with these players taking off we don’t need to spend money on new recruits. Oh wait… Hmm yeah that’s right the FOOL and his back room staff have screwed every prospect they have touched too. Round of applause everybody! Another fine job!

It’s about time we put in a manager that knows what he’s doing and gave him some bloody money to spend – unless of course Mike is happy having us flirt with relegation every year… A dangerous game but it would not surprise me in the least! Yes he was saddled with unforeseen debt when he took this place on, but that’s his mistake for not doing his homework properly – it’s a bit harsh to make the fans pay for his mistake year after bloody year.

I see Joe Kinnear had the cheek to point out Pardew has signed 16 players and spent £60m in the last 2/3 years. He forgot to mention the outgoings. In the last five years we are UP almost £20 million in transfer fees alone.

I appreciate the whole Financial Fair Play framework, but one minute we are told we re making signings – the next we are being told we have to sell to buy. Which is it?! Why bring in Joe Kinnear if we had no intention of spending money this summer? Baffling. We need to make two changes, because Mike Ashley is going nowhere. 1) – Get a proper commercial director in and increase our global brand and 2) – Drop Pardew and his backroom staff and bring in a modern thinking team that can get our players expressing themselves whilst delivering a brand of football we can all be proud of again, regardless of results.

The end.

I couldn’t possibly comment – I’ve never seen most of the buggers that far up the pitch 😯 🙂

  2. Dear Newcastle Fan’s,
You have to have more faith in your team and stop being so negative.
We have a strong squad and a world class manager at the club. If your feeling down go and buy a Newcastle top with my name on it or your favourite players. Morecambe was a great win but there’s no pleasing some people at this club.

  3. we have a decent squad…on paper but Pards doesnt have any idea how to play them. I honestly believe he’s lost the dressing room. too many bottlers not enough steel.. We have a buffoon as DOF that has been given petty-cash to buy players off a Chairman that wants out.. 😎

On the positive side, The Ameobis can save our season 😆

      (Quote)

  4. Yes-Pardew coached all the skill out of Obertan that Sir Alex put in, and that’s why he sold him to us for 3mil 😯 😆

For me you defeated half of your points here

“I see Joe Kinnear had the cheek to point out Pardew has signed 16 players and spent £60m in the last 2/3 years. He forgot to mention the outgoings. In the last five years we are UP almost £20 million in transfer fees alone.”

Exactly. Which other manager has had to deal with this set up? Or rather, dealt with this set up and brought about success at the same time? Pardew has square pegs in round holes because he doesn’t dictate the transfer policy, or the scouting polcy-Ashley does. We buy players who will increase in value, not players who will benefit the team or suit a style-hence the signing of Anita, heck you could even throw Cisse into that bracket imo. Our youth set up and players are largely *****-yet Beardo’s name rarely gets mentioned, loved the guy as a player but is he here for sentimental value or ability? Same goes for Stone, Carver, etc etc…Geordie boys to keep the geordie public on side?

I don’t really care if Pardew stays or goes-what irks me is that people don’t get that every other manager who comes in will have to work under these conditions-and the problem is any good ones won’t consider it to begin with. Those chirping about Benitez last year were off their fucking rocker.

We need 3 points against Fulham. If we lose then I’d sack Pardew and bring in Kinnear because the moaning is getting worse than the football we play to be quite honest. No offence Shamrock though, you’re not as bad as most 😆

  5. We need to sign the other Ameobi (toni?) last I heard he was tearing up the Icelandic league, we’ll win a cup as well as top 10 imo.

  6. “I think we’ve said, and just taking Demba out of the equation for a second, that we need and would like another striker or maybe another two flair players in the side, so we are the market for anybody in that field that we think is going to work for us,” Pardew said.

“We work in a small spectre of the market in terms of the finance we have available, so that’s what we’re concentrating on.” meaning.. if we can get a quality international player worth 6mil, who’s under 26 and French who will be happy to b paid peanuts but will cost us under 1mil, or on loan then we’re ready to do business.. 😛

  7. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho reacted angrily when told he had only won three of his 15 meetings with former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola, whose Bayern Munich the Blues face in the Uefa Super Cup in Prague on Friday.

“Your statistics are very wrong,” he said. “Go and see what happened when I was with Inter in the Champions League semi-final, the King’s Cup final with Real in Spain, the Super Cup in Spain.

“Maybe you are right and I am wrong but I don’t care. This is not about us, it’s about Chelsea and Bayern. If you want to ask questions about Chelsea I am here until four o’clock. If you want to ask questions about Real or Barcelona then I’m not here.”

But clearly only **** managers like Pardew make fools of themselves in press conferences 😆 😉

      (Quote)

  8. NEWKIE – Dortmund and Arsenal are proof that you don’t need to spend big to challenge. Even Swansea and Everton are playing better football with better results than us. That’s all down to Pardew.

I was one of those ‘chriping’ on about Benitez. He would have come and he could have worked under these conditions – he did at Chelsea.

Better than Benitez we could have had Pellegrini. Pellegrini no joke. We could have even gone for Martinez but nope…….let’s stick with Pardew and give him another season!

100% agree about Stone, Carver, Beardo. I wouldn’t even want Shearer at the club unless he had proved himself elsewhere.

      (Quote)

  9. Pardew get’s sacked.

    Kinnear temporarily replaces him.

Who would we realistically want to see come in to replace Kinnear?

      (Quote)

  10. KK-Arsenal and Dortmund are fantastic clubs with great youth set ups, Arsenal play some of the best football and have done for years and their fans still want their manager and owners out 😆 Anyway, transfer deficit is what I was referring to-and players being sold from under the manager.-Wenger is more than happy for his top players to go and is happy not to spend, Pardew puts up with it because he has to.

The fact you can compare us with Chelsea-who will spend 100mil each window while we will barely push 1mil in outlay is crazy. Benitez’s wages likewise. He’d have never ever ever considered us and nor would Pellegrini. Martinez is *****, took a stable PL club down after years of fighting relegation and years of average transfers. Good football wooptie do.

Agree with you about Shearer though, each time I see him on MOTD I’m convinced I’d make a better manager than he would. In fact I know I would.

  11. kk what have you got against Carver ?? he was assistant manger last time Newcastle got to the Champions League he has a 2nd 3rd and 2 5th place finishes as assistant manger… i think that counts as proving himself as a coach.. expanding on the backroom team might be an idea instead of sacking the coaches. say what you will about Pardew he has done well under the conditions and tactically he may be lacking so get a tactical coach in… they got in a fitness coach to pick up the slack

      (Quote)

  12. Rattled a few cages there Shamrock. I largely agree with you but only when I get very very angry. Krul’s OK right?

      (Quote)

  13. Georgio-rattled a few cages? I’m the only one that’s disagreeing with him! And to think, this used to be the happy blog. 😆

      (Quote)

  14. John – You’re surname isn’t Carver……is it? 😆

I think he was incredibly lucky to work for SBR but i don’t think he was there because he was/is a decent assistant/coach. I think he is there because he is a Geordie who once played for the club, that’s all.

Nothing else he has ever done anywhere else shows that he’s deserving of the job he has (like a lot of our current backroom)

As i understand it SBR tried to replace him with Mourinho!

      (Quote)

  15. KK-Bang on the money-he did try to replace him with Jose. Imagine Jose instead of Sourpuss. **** our luck 😕

      (Quote)

  16. Jose turned the job down but he has only joined rich clubs, Real madrid, Inter milan, Chelsea, FC porto. He wouldn’t do so well under Ashleys budget.

      (Quote)

  17. This club would have to spend 200 million at least to have a title challenge. He gets that help at Chelsea.

      (Quote)

  18. Shamrock ,good read mate ,it’s fair to say for all Pards restrictions he does seem out of his depth with our Flair players . Christ he even played Tevez out of position 😉 who does that .

      (Quote)

  19. Stem-exactly. And that’s why I can’t understand anyone who thinks Benitez would have come to us. Chelski will throw blood money all over the place, Ashley buys to sell. It’s a system that can work don’t get me wrong-but we need the right coaches and a manager who is willing to accept it. Considering nobody else seemed up for it when we sacked Hoots I don’t see that we have too many options.. 😕

      (Quote)

  20. so pardew has told Cabaye he expects him to play against Fulham because Arsenal have not upped their offer . Their is a couple of things that could happen then ,Cabaye plays and we are ***** (again) and Cabaye does not look interested while on the pitch . The crowd react and the atmosphere in the stadium gets ugly and we loose the game , or Saturday morning Arsenal up their offer too 12 million just too test Ashleys nerve and the player refuses to play again , leaving a team almost devoid of creative players without one of the couple of players we have that can (when he is in the mood) create things . The worst of all this is , the rumours started that Cabaye was a wanted man as soon as last season finished and yet all we have heard is we only need a couple of strikers in and guess fucking what , we have 1 loan striker in and the clock is ticking down fast . Our defence is poor and yet nothing is said about that by those running the club also , WHY THE **** HAVE WE NOT STRENGTHEND THE TEAM IN THE PLACES THAT NEEDED IT MOST. 1 cb 1cm and 2strikers that can play through the middle and out wide would have done the job . Harper ,Perch and Simpson are off the wage bill Williamson , Gosling and Cabaye could be sold that makes 6 off the wage bill and transfer money in from 4 plus all the new tv money . Was it too much to ask 4 good new players in ? they dont need too be marquee signings , just an improvement on those that have gone or need replaced and thats not hard and would not cost a kings ransom if the scouting was up to the required standard which is begining to become apparent its not . Their is better and cheaper leagues to scout than France its a pity Carr does not see that . The season has started and we are the laughing stock of the PL again ,Thanks Ashley you fat **** .

  21. A good read Shamrock. Thanks for the post. I agree with your basic premise. A 2-0 win against a poor division 2 side (picked by the bookies to be relegated) doesn’t change anything. We have been poorly managed under Pardew for more than a year now. First he claimed Willo was excellent, then he finally realized differently and dropped him from the starting 11. This was our target man from corners and most set pieces for half a season! He also claimed our youngsters were excellent 2 seasons ago then said they had let him down last season. Most of what he says to the press is bollocks. Running away from the supporters after the Liverpool 6-0 massacre. First man down the tunnel in a sprint. He ran faster than any of our players did that day. I could go on and on but what’s the point.?And I admit Ashley is useless as well so who would he come up with as replacement? Probably someone equally useless. Sorry to be negative and I hope I’m convinced otherwise by our play this season.

      (Quote)

  22. Newkie Sir Bobby Robson was the best manager this club ever had. I think he would have stayed under Ashley. He loved the club to much to walk away from it. How the hell do you replace him ? I have never really excepted any Newcastle manager after him. Bobby set a high standard and was a victim of his own success.

      (Quote)

  23. Every home game this season is probably going to be a real test for Pardew if he stays with us. And the away games probably won’t be great for him either. The influence of a great manager can’t be overestimated. We don’t even have an average manager unless Pardew proves it this season by finishing mid table. Ashley would be thrilled with that I’m sure. Personally I’ve watched enough Pardew football to last me a lifetime. What we need and what we’re going to get are probably 2 very different things but I continue to hope for improvement all through the club, from the owner on down.

  26. Heads cow, DJEB @28 I like it. In German he would be Schafe Kopf or sheep’s head. He’s as thick as a cow if he doesn’t play Ben Arfa where he belongs, in behind 2 decent strikers. Get a real winger before the window closes as well Joe and do something useful about Cabaye. Either sell him and bring in a replacement quickly or find out if he’s willing to work hard for us this season.

  28. All this bollocks about us going after Ba. He just managed to escape this loony bin! 😆 Seriously he would never come back. His agents will want a sweet deal for themselves and he’s after more money not less. As for Gomis, I’m sick of hearing stories. Either sign him or move on Joe. Only 3 days to go now. We look like rabbits in the headlights again.

      (Quote)

  29. Spot on again DJEB. Most of the players look afraid to even try short pass football. Most teams close us down early in the game and then we just resort to hoofball. Nobody wants to be caught on the ball and the team clearly loses faith in itself. That is up to Pardew to change but I doubt he can do it.

      (Quote)

  30. Gomis is the player that we need …if pards stay here…because bafe gomis is one of 5 best player in europe who can keep the strongly and various pass around him….he have a biautiful head play and a massive shot ❗
Trust me he is the best choise miracle we can have today ❗
If pards still hoof bal…gomis can be very very important for success and wining games ❗

      (Quote)

  31. Short pass football requires great commitment, effort, and fitness. Look at the teams who play it. They are all extremely fit and confident. We don’t look that way at all. Watch Fulham against us. They will press us hard early in the game and knock us off our early passing attempts. Then we’ll play hoofball to Cisse. Only Ben Arfa and a couple of the other players will try to maintain control of the ball. It just doesn’t work when applied in a half hearted way by a team lacking in confidence.

      (Quote)

  32. Sorry he can keep the ball extremly very well upfront and pass well around him ❗ he is strong and very good ability with his feet ❗ after hatem and cabaye …gomis can be the third best french signing ❗ seriously ❗

  33. It’s obvious we have a lot of underperforming players at the club. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that they started underperforming with Pardew as manager. I just haven’t seen anything from him to convince me anything will improve this season over last. He isn’t changing his approach at all. Some of the players already look beaten after 2 league games. Cabaye isn’t the only one to lose faith in Pardew by any means.

      (Quote)

  34. U re wright georditwo…but if pards change for 4 3 1 2…with lots of move …the team can play short pass and try to keep the ball better than 4 4 2 ..
If pards play conter attack with this tactics and free hba behind gomis . Cisse …i m sure we can beat any team ❗
Toonsi have wright when he say we have good players but wrong tactics …i m agree with that ❗ all my post repeat that since 2 years ago ❗ ❗

  35. Robson was disappointed with the club’s opening salary offer, stating “…it was miles below the going rate”, but negotiated a one year, £1 million deal.

Robson was critical of Shepherd, claiming that while manager he was denied information regarding the players’ contracts and transfer negotiations. He also criticised Shepherd and the club’s deputy chairman Douglas Hall, for their focus on the first team and St James’ Park, causing them to neglect less glamorous issues, such as the training ground, youth development and talent scouts

Makes me happy that Freddy Shepherd is no longer there. Mike Ashley way better than that joke.

      (Quote)

  36. Good post DJEB @36 but Pardew will probably find a way to turn him into ****. What is Joe doing other than enjoying a few pints? Why leave it so late in the window? The only reason I can see is they are waiting for the money from Cabaye and Pardew is sweating in case Cabaye isn’t sold and sulks all season.

      (Quote)

  37. No dream pardew never be sacked just perhaps before 2019…1 years before the end of his fucking contract….it s too expensive for the clown ashley now for sacked him ❗
    Defently sad story …. 👿

      (Quote)

  38. Good way to put it DJEB Pardew has no dream for the club, he just wants to survive and collect his pay. As he says, thank god we don’t have to play in Europe this season. Ask Swansea’s manager how he likes playing in Europe for a different attitude altogether. They are building a very good team with growing confidence. We are not.

      (Quote)

  39. What have we become?

We have become the football equivalent of Sports Direct IMO, and will remain that while Ashley is in charge.

JFK bangs on about Pardew getting 16 players and spending £60 in the last 2/3 seasons – that’s £3.75m per player – that’s gonna buy you some real quality players isn’t it. £60m – £45m came from the sales of Carroll, Ba and Forster – so Cashley has actually invested in the region of £15m in the last 2/3 years – thanks for that 😉
I know he wants to make the club self sufficient but we still need strengthening FFS and we still need to be a PL outfit.

Anyone who knows anything about Sports Direct knows that you can buy cheap tat for next to nowt. Ashley has employed JFK and Pardew (cheap tat) for next to nowt.

If you’re not going to buy top quality players then you need a good manager/coach to get the most out of what you have. I know some people rate our squad – but let’s be honest – how many of them would actually get into a top 6 team?.
Only Cabaye bid for this summer.

We need a new CF and we need more creativity in the team – but what we need more than that is a good coach/manager to get the most out of the squad we have.
But just like one of the 20,000 zero hours contract staff at Sports Direct hoping for permanent contract – I won’t hold my breath 🙄

  41. Can’t believe anyone can defend Pardew.

Do you not watch the football he produces on the pitch? Let alone the results?

We play close to the worst football in the league. He is a poor man’s Big Sam.

You can ***** about lack of investment and poor squads as much as we like. At the end of the day. The most important aspect at the club is the man in charge. The MANAGER.

He is supposed to get the BEST out of the players available to him. We have far from the best squad. But we certainly have a squad that should be capable of challenging for the top 8.

Yet we struggle to match the likes of Brighton, Morecambe, Norwich, Blackpool, Crystal Palace. They all look more organised than we do!

Its disgusting that this is accepted and defended by certain supporters.

Talk about being blind to the obvious.

I don’t care if we don’t sign anyone. It doesn’t matter with Pardew in charge. If we sign nobody and get rid of him. It’s a HUGE leap forward.

  45. JJ – I can’t believe Ashley gave him an 8yr contract with go get out clause FFS.
Gus Poyet, Roberto Di Matteo and Steve McClaren all out of work at the moment. Any of those would do a better job than Pardew IMO.
But Ashley isn’t going to pay out that kind of compo to get rid of Pardew and he’s not daft enough to walk away from this deal he’s got himself isnt he?!.

      (Quote)

  46. He played Tevez as a left wing???? Said he didn’t defend enough for the team.

Christ. This is the buffoon we have in charge.

Recall him doing the same to Cisse and Sissoko, who have never been the same since.

Can’t wait for him to ruin Remy. Probably ***** that Remy doesn’t get back and help out the right back enough.

      (Quote)

  47. “I didn’t rate him that yr,thought he was a jammy sod, and.a lot of PL clubs had a poor yr”

    Ice,
    Exactly my sentiments.

We finished fifth. Yet that year didn’t give me anywhere near as much enjoyment as it should have.
It felt as though we fluked every win. We played aweful disjointed football most of the time. Had so many last ditch blocks and clearances off the line and some great individual goals.

Eventually I figured. Maybe I should lighten up and give Pardew some credit. He can’t be THIS LUCKY I said. Even though it felt like every goal every moment was pure ****.

Yet, now his luck has run out. And he has shown his true colours.

Now, not only do we have the pathetic football. But we have the results to match it.
I’ve never been so bored and unhappy, or less excited about watching my side play. That is why I want him out.

Even if we are to be a middle table relegation scrap team. At least get someone in that will give us a bit of fire and passion and fight and entertainment for goodness sake.

Was a decent squad at that stage at West Ham. Should have been at least mid table. But he had them in a relegation scrap.

They scored 35 goals in 38 games that season.

  51. Sad to say but spot on again jazzyp @251. We need a new and better manager. Plain and simple. With experience with foreign internationals if at all possible. Could we lure Solskjaar (not sure of spelling) in? Pardew has had his time. 100 games in charge now. Very poor overall and getting worse not better. Ashley has to wake up soon or he’ll be desperately spending in January to save us again.

  52. Sorry for that. Posting on 2 blogs again. 😳 Some interesting things over there though (won’t mention the blog). They have some good posters but not as many as us. 😆

G2 to be honest mate I do think we do have some good players, but pardew hasn’t got a clue with tactics or how where to play them to get the best from them,we are fed up with it what about the playersthemselves feel, could be one two will want to move on in jJan,I woundnt blame them you can only take so much

  54. Ice,
under Robson we played with two out and out wingers in Robert and Solano with and out and out attacking midfielder in Dyer. A defensive midfielder who chipped in with goals and was a real threat from set pieces in Speed and then we had a target man who scored in Shearer and an absolute workhorse with frightening pace in Bellemy which meant the opposition defense had to stay deep which Shearer reveled in.

Such an attacking team. We were the perfect counter attacking outfit. Although our defense wasn’t the best. We challenged top four!

So why Carver would go from that to two or three deep defensive midfielders sitting in front of a back four. With one defensive wing who basically fills in as a third DM in front of a back four. Neither wing can cross the ball our provide width. Only one has the ability to beat his man.

Then we have a striker who cannot hold up the ball but works his but off playing next to … um… um… nobody or Shola. Or Sissoko who is played out of position.

So now the opposition can push up as much as they like and we still don’t have the pace or numbers to get beyond them.

We sit back, invite pressure and we hope for a miracle goal while defending for our lives.

Our defenders aren’t as bad as they look. They are just constantly under pressure.

Our strikers aren’t as bad as they look. They have ZERO service. So when that ONE chance comes along. They are under so much pressure its ridiculous.

Our midfielders aren’t as bad as they look. But they are all in a similar mould, sitting deep and they are simply no options in front of them.

So who is at fault??? THE **** POOR MANAGER!

And that doesn’t even mention the set pieces. Which are diabolical!

What has it been? 300 corners? No goals.

    Unbelievable.

  55. Also remember Robson had Steve Clark with him as well. Who clearly has done very well for himself. Maybe Carver is just as frustrated as the rest of us. Who knows.

  56. Two players we should be looking at are:

1 A creative no.10/attacking midfielder who can find a defense splitting pass and is comfortable in the attacking third.

2 We need a striker next to Cisse or Remy that can hold the ball up in the final third and allow our midfield to push up and join our attacks.

But with Pardew’s poor tactical brain. He’d end up using someone like Gomis like a donkey. Play long diagnol balls and hope Cisse can feed of the scraps while the rest of the team remained deep and defended.

  57. I’m not defending Pardew because he did play Tevez and Mascherano out of position – that said Barca have played Masch as a CB like.
But when Pardew left them on the bench that was out of his hands I believe. My understanding was that WH paid on appearances – so they were available if needed but I think he was encouraged not to select they unless absolutely necessary.

  58. I don’t want to build anyone’s hopes up, but under Ashley we have a tendency of making big (ish) changes during international breaks – most have been negative ones like renaming the stadium and such like.
But defeat against Fulham could well give Ashley the international break to replace Pardew?!
Or is that just seriously wishful thinking? 🙄

  59. I agree Ice mate @60. Pardew is not getting enough out of the players he has. We need positive change but will it come? If we are dire against Fulham, say a 0-3 loss will he go? And if so will it be Joe? It seems very likely. And JJ @61 so much of what you describe is absolutely true. Even against Morecambe we were pressed and overrun in midfield for much of the game! That’s downright embarrassing. How can we hope to cope against most Prem clubs with the way we are set up? Use Ben Arfa as a true no. 10 and put 2 strikers out there for god’s sake Pardew. Press Fulham in midfield before Berbatov gets on the ball. He will pick us apart otherwise. No Shola against Fulham please. And Cisse up front alone against their back 4 is a complete waste of time.

  60. looks like Cabaye might be staying after all according to reports. to tell the truth I dont want him here anymore, the little *****. I want him gone so we can release the funds for new players. No Cabaye sale no buys I reckon..

  61. SHARPY@65 if that happens and we have kept all the players we have ,that for me would make it the best summer transfer window under Ashley . Thats how bad the situation is imo . A forward thinking young coach is what we need and at this moment i do not care where he comes from a one that knows the premiership is preferable but not a must .

  62. Teams should always have at least five attack minded players.

In a 4-4-2 (the two strikers, the two wingers and the one central midfielder) like under Sir Bobby.

In a 4-1-3-2 (the three attacking midfielders with two strikers)

In a 4-2-3-1 (which is as attacking as Pardew normally gets) you are left short on numbers in attack. Especially with in immobile forward like Shola. It doesn’t help having a midfielder like Jonas in the top three who can’t pass, cross or score either. He also provides zero width. As we then effectively end up playing with a 4-3-2-1 formation. With the attack minded players all miles from each other and playing as isolated individuals.

I cannot believe this hasn’t been picked up during the analysis of last season by our coaching staff. We simply play too negatively.

It doesn’t mean that the “attacking players” don’t defend. But they don’t make it their priority. They defend further up the pitch. We should be pressing the opposition? Or are we not fit enough? Again, poor management.

  63. Spot on again JJ @69. Many of us have been banging on about this for a while now. Pardew simply doesn’t put out a formation to win. He wants strong defense, and the odd counter attack resulting in a goal to defend. It won’t work in the Prem. His methods haven’t changed so we will continue to struggle.

  64. I just want a manager who sets us up to play to OUR strengths. Not one who sets us up (even at home) to try counter the oppositions strengths.

  65. Axel – like I say mate, don’t want to build up hopes and in reality he’d have only had 3 games. But defeat to Fulham would leave us with 1 point and in the bottom 3 and after last season, I think Ashley may just think ‘enough is enough’. But only 3 games may buy him more time.
The international break just gives him chance to bring someone in and afford them some time to get into the role abit.

Who would you fancy mate?. Poyet, Di Matteo, McClaren or someone else mate.
Di Matteo has a little bit of PL experience, as does McClaren though from a while ago, but you will also know how he got on in Holland – what do you reckon buddy?.

  66. SHARPY first time round Mclaren won the Title with FC Twente second time round he did nowt , i would not want him . A good coach from Holland would be Ronald Koeman he has worked wonders with Feyenoord considering they are skint and has had too put his faith in their young players . They have started this season poorly but still he has had a couple of great seasons . Of the ones you name i would go for Di matteo .

      (Quote)

  67. Axel – if he paid Pardew off then I’d be surprised if he bought a manager out of his contract.
If we replaced Pardew I think you’re looking at either JFK or someone who’s currently out of work. I’d personally prefer to give Di Matteo a go but I think he may have stupid wage demands being a CL winner with Chelsea.
I think it would more likely be Poyet coz he’s pals with Wise and I reckon our regime Wise and Poyet probably move in the same circle.
McClaren could have the gobshite factor we’d loose in Pardew
