Hats off to Ben Arfa! Newcastle 1-0 Fulham

Hatem celebrates in style
Hatem celebrates in style
Hatem Ben Arfa struck late to grab three points for United, ending over seven hours of match time without seeing a goal at St James’ Park and securing our first league win of the season to boot.

A piece of magic ensured that we mustered two wins within the space of the week to at least brighten the mood temporarily ahead of transfer deadline day tomorrow.

The most impressive thing for me though was the performance. Although the first half was tepid and devoid of any real attacking intent, our possession wasn’t bad and Fulham rarely got a sniff. However when our key players took to the field in the second period we looked more threatening, more urgent and in the end we could and perhaps should have won by more than one goal.

Our problems are in attack. Papiss Cisse and Shola Ameobi need things created for them and if they don’t get that their contribution is minimal. I actually sympathise with them, especially when you see what happened in the first half where they were left isolated for the most part and on the odd occasion that they weren’t the supply line got a bit greedy and tried something fancy instead of keeping things simple.

In truth the second period started off in much the same vein as the first ended, with Fulham rarely threatening and United lacking bite, but the introduction of Yohan Cabaye, Yoan Gouffran and Loic Remy seemed to tip the balance in our favour and gave Fulham more to worry about.

Hatem’s goal was fantastic and Robbie Stockdale in the Fulham goal couldn’t do a thing about it. It sums Ben Arfa up perfectly. An afternoon spent frustrating everyone by trying too much or by making poor decisions was topped off with that goal which gave us the three points. You can watch it again below.

Papiss Cisse hit the crossbar, Cabaye forced a save from Stockdale who then denied Cisse at the second attempt and Gouffran missed a couple of chances but in the end the one goal was enough for United.

We now have two weeks off as the international break kicks in and when we return we have games away at Aston Villa and at home to Hull to contend with. First off though we need to see what kind of squad we have left to utilise once the window closes. I suspect it won’t be too different to the one we have now and certainly won’t be added to but I may be wrong.

That’s for tomorrow though. For now, take a bow Hatem!

P.S; Just a couple of stats for you following on from the game yesterday.

– Hatem Ben Arfa has scored in all three of his appearance against Fulham.

– No team has played fewer long balls this season than……. Newcastle United!

  1. @Stu
Really good read. Probably the fairest article I’ve ever read on Ashley’s tenure.

  2. It’s a carbon copy of last summer.
I do believe we are on the brink of signing a few players (as we were last summer), however it will only be sanctioned if someone is sold to fund it.
    January was emergency signings.
It’s not totally different to Spurs.
It’s just they are in a different league to developing players to us/better at buying players that have the potential to hugely improve.
    – Carr/Pardew/coaching staff to blame.
Also doesn’t help that our owner dallies when replacing sold players.

  4. @Sharpy

    told u we’d only sign 1 striker.

If it stays the same we are a f**king joke. Pards cries for forwards, we’re linked with 3. we scout in Belgium and France for what?

2 Flair players looked at.. whats happened there?

MA has took the p**s out of Pardew and the fans and hired a total clown to do precisely jack-****.

Pardew will be a brave man to smile through this and say he’s happy we didnt lose Cabaye but we’ll go with what we’ve got

and we let Harper, Perch and Simmo leave.. 😯

  5. lol all the toon fans are waiting for a bit of news while Pardew, Ashley and Kinnear have their feet up at home eating their tea knowing our business is done for the summer..

  6. So we have spent:

2 million on Remy (on loan) and are paying his 80k/week wages.

His wages are basically covered by the players who have left:
    Xisco – 50k
    Perch – 15k
    Simmo – 20k
    Harper – 20k
Total saving 105k/week- Remy’s 80k/week. Left over 25k/week (or 1.2million pounds per season). Which I’m guessing is the loan fee we agreed to pay for Remy.

Net capital outlay = 0… Seems about right doesn’t it. We’ve spent nothing, our wage bill is the same as last season and Ashley pays off another huge wad of his loan. I reckon we’ve got another 2/3 seasons of this until Ashley sells. (If we stay in the Premier League).

    So basically we’re saving 10k/week.
And and getting around 1mil for the sale of Perch.

Oh and I was wrong, Villa have signed another striker!

What the **** are we doing man??.

  10. Sharpy – Don’t worry, man. We will make our move in January when we’re in danger of relegation, but it will mean we have saved a bit of money because apparently players are cheaper in January… Although I think they call it a false economy if we are relegated and our attendances drop by 20% due to a lack of effort by the club. After all, if the club don’t make the effort, why should we?

  11. Very good read Stuart @289. Thanks for posting it. It doesn’t help us get through these nightmare summer windows though does it mate? Sitting helplessly watching virtually every other club strengthen while we do nothing. Watching Pardew flail in the wind, sending out meaningless sound bites while Joe does nothing and Mike probably laughs in his castle (alone as he should be I would think).

      (Quote)

  12. Llambias used to say that we avoided the January window because panic buying made prices rise Stuart @311. Now the policy seems to be the reverse mate. It seems to me that the management just says whatever comes to mind and since they have very tiny minds it doesn’t add up to much at all.

  14. We still lack creativity from out wide and Shola is still getting a game upfront….We need at least two we are getting none!

I’m usually not this negative but we have been a laughing stock for far too long under Ashley. Bringing JFK in was the final nail in the fat mans coffin for me especially after they have strung us along with bollocks all window!

We all deserve a lot better than this ****! He is exploiting the fact we love the club and can’t just walk away!

If our partners treat us even half as bad as the club treats us supporters we would have got rid along time ago.

      (Quote)

  15. Is it possible we signed the wrong Amalfitano? West Brom just signed our lad’s older brother. Is he the better of the two? I suppose it doesn’t matter. We clearly know what we’re doing with all the summer signings to strengthen us for the long season ahead. Yes it’s clear Joe has it all under control mates. I for one am supremely confident we will be in the top 10 come May. Not.

      (Quote)

  16. Joe Kinnear has had a lot of stick recently but I was wondering if it was his fault. Was he given the job of DOF with £20m to spend (this is what he told journos) or was he given the job and told by Ashley you have nothing to spend? If he was genuinely given money to spend then he surely must take the wrap for this shambles but if he was given no money, then it begs the question – what the fck was anyone given the job for?

      (Quote)

  17. Our transfer policy is a compete mystery to me. Since we can’t trust either Joe or Mike to speak a word of truth and since Pardew is completely clueless about what is really going on there is no way of even guessing why we’ve done nothing. Has Mikey been told we are solid as a squad again like last summer? Does Joe spout bollocks to him or just say nothings? All I know is that our management group is a complete disaster. No other club at any level would have anything to do with Kinnear. Pardew is mainly a flunky and a scapegoat for a disinterested owner. Pathetic. Get out Ashley.

      (Quote)

  18. Come on JJ ,play fair!
We reportedly paid QPR a £2m loan fee for Remy and sold Perch for £600k – so that’s a nett spend of £1.4m.
On the wages – you did not take into account the wages saved on the 6 players we have loaned out, which should be a combined saving of at least £30k per week to add to the £25k you identified.
If we loan out Campbell that will be another saving.
It could be a whole six months before Ashley breaks even on this window!
    Disasterous!

      (Quote)

  19. Unbelievable pile of bollocks every summer. For me this summer has been the worst of all. We’ve let several decent bench players go and brought in 1 loan player who is in danger of serving time. We have a DoF who hasn’t got a clue and would never admit it. We have an owner who has completely lost interest. How he thinks this will lead to getting a good sale price for the club I have no idea. Unless he really does enjoy the abuse and plans to keep torturing us indefinitely?

  20. G2 the whole show is a sham mate like the wonga deal, virgin were paying more so the storey goes, thing is Brandon would not move money about, wink wink

      (Quote)

  21. Sounds about right for us ice @322 mate. If there is a shady deal to be had I’m sure Ashley will find it. Wonga should be the perfect partner for him. Low life meets low life and falls in love. A match made in heaven. 👿

      (Quote)

  22. the whole thing is a total farce. From Pards saying at the end of last season players have already been identified to Kinnear coming in saying if Pards wants players he’ll ask. Then players we’re identified again another list was draw up and a back-up list.. Kinnear then suggests everyone is happy with the squad even tho he flies to France and Belgium then to a meeting in the Med on a yacht , back to Pards saying we need a forward and a couple of flair layers..

do any of these crackers communicate?

      (Quote)

  23. With Cabaye not being sold and Arsenal and PSG going after better players Cabaye’s swollen head should come down a few sizes now. He’ll have to shut his gob and play hard and well to get a sniff at the French squad for the World Cup. Has he got the guts for it? We should know soon enough.

      (Quote)

  24. Spot on Mark @325. A pissup on a yacht by the 3 stooges. That’s what we get for the club’s benefit. You couldn’t make it up mate.

      (Quote)

  25. …I’ll hold my hands up if fk all happens though. Honestly thought Fatboy would bring in a few this time around. Stardust raises some valid points, but it doesn’t escape the fact he gambles with NUFC’s Premier League status year in year out. For the sake of about 10m we could guarantee (in my humble opinion) a top 10 finish. We drastically need more creativity in midfield. And another striker is STILL needed. We were absolutely ***** against Fulham until Remy and Cabaye came on. Last season’s summer deals also don’t wash as squad enhancements, as we’ve since sold Perch and Simpson. Cissoko was good business, but not in the area we need to strengthen.

Fk knows why I’m wasting another transfer window D-Day evening watching SSN. 😕 😆

      (Quote)

  26. Deeply disturbing that the owner can’t be bothered again this summer. I don’t think he even looks at the squad, just the bottom line. So much spent this year, so much coming in. No signings and he makes a profit for the season. Perfect. Follow the same plan each season with occasional panic buys in the January window to make sure we don’t get relegated. Joe will spout off when he feels it’s necessary and Alan will just say anything and hope to keep his job. The ideal setup for a man? like Ashley.

      (Quote)

  27. If Shane Long is available we should get in on him!!!! But we will probably end up signing no one and by january they will recognise the need to spend again and so on and so on. We will be at the mercy of fatty’s gambling on us doing well while breaking even or maybe making a slight profit. Sadly

  28. If Lukaku goes to Everton on loan I am going to be flipping ****** off.
Why are we so utterly incompetent.
Why did we not sign bloody Redmond.

  29. C’mon guys, seriously what did you expect today?
The soundbites that have been coming out of SJP have all centred around our alleged vulnerability to losing the so called “purples”.
Surely you must have realised that Ashley did not make any funds available unless a player was sold.
The FOOL is also part of this as he has been touting his own players to the press etc.
There is no conspiracy between Ashley and Jokey to oust the FOOL, the FOOL is part of the master plan!
    “To mediocracy and beyond”

  30. *I meant January deals btw, not summer (not that anyone’s arsed anyway).

APP, I was thinking about Shane Long too. There are bucketloads of available players. I’m shocked we’re doing sweet FA. Gomis, shmomis. Do we not have contingency plans? Or are all our publicised interests all just a ruse to placate anxious (pissed off) fans?

    Load of old *****.

  33. Come on guys – this is brilliant! With each passing minute we are further into the black! There is nothing more satisfying as a football fan than knowing we are going to hve an exciting season of footbal flirting with relegation AT THE SAME TIME as paying Ashley back that little bit quicker.

It was a master stroke bringing in ‘sledge hammer Kinnear’ this summer. With his communication and negotiation skills we are rest assured that not a penny will be wasted in this transfer market. It’s brilliant news for our future.

You can call me one happy Toon fan 😛

    😕

      (Quote)

  34. well as much as we trusted Pards and Kinnear regarding signing players we shouldn’t be surprised we’ve been kicked in the nuts again. Ashley must be pissing himself laughing at us. He’s probably having a cigar reading this blog 😆

  35. So Mark@339, we were all led up the garden path again then? Surely not.

What pisses me off is Pardew saying we need 2 or 3 players at the end of last season, then 2 months later saying they all met up at the end of last season and agreed our squad was strong enough. He spent pretty much the whole of last season fucking whingeing on about how weak our squad was. Whatever excuse he can think of, he still whinges on when we’re beaten by a sub-standard side – yet we’re now apparently strong-enough! Yeah strong enough until 4 or 5 of our first teamers get injured or suspended. Fucking short memory that bloke.
He has been vocal in the past about Fatboy needing to spend, but he changes his stance on a flipping (see that Trumpet 😉 ) weekly ******* basis. Dunno why I’m getting wound up though. It’s plain for all to see, Pardew and the puppet master are two peas in a pod.

      (Quote)

  36. It’s going to be a long hard season for Joe and Alan unless we play consistently well. If we have virtually no injuries to key players that might be possible but when has that ever happened? We have very little on the bench in attack or on the wing. We are 1 serious injury at CB away from a huge problem as we only really have Saylor and possibly Good (I don’t rate Willo and neither does Pardew now). We are very thin at RB. We have no possible replacement for Ben Arfa. We don’t have enough scoring in the lineup unless Cisse suddenly returns to form. But everything is fine apparently judging by our transfer activity.

It’s for exactly the same reason I don’t watch TV programmes. I have a big cardboard box in my front room with a hole cut in the front, and get my mates to stick their heads inside and act out movies. I’ve even drew on a volume switch and a massive available channel list to make it more interesting. I recently watched ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug’.
Admittedly isn’t wasn’t that good as I’ve only got one mate and he had to play all the characters, but at least it cost me **** all. 😎

  46. I have to admit, despite my anger at not signing anyone, I am kind of glad we are not being linked about.

This transfer window has confirmed, openly, for the first time that this whole transfer window thing is a scam for the media to get ratings, web hits and paper buys. Not only that, but the big teams have also lost themselves in the hype. Man Utd and Arsenal would never have acted this way in the past.

We may as well struggle on with what we have, anything we get now will be rushed and not what we really want.

  50. This is just a replay of last summer. And it will probably have the same result. A season long battle with relegation. We can’t rely on Cisse to score as he first did with us. We can’t rely on miracle strikes from Ben Arfa every game. We should be better with Remy in the lineup but what about injuries? We have an unsettled player in Cabaye and several other midfielders have been inconsistent, as has our starting RB. Marveaux can be decent or terrible. I have high hopes for Anita and Mbiwa but we still have several players in the squad who should have been gone by now. Kinnear has been and will continue to be a waste of time.

  51. Well ,even though I knew no one would come in from when the window opened I’m still utterly ****** off with it.The sooner that fat ******* sells up the better imo . I hope if we are depleted by injuries and struggling Pards doesn’t come out with it as an excuse because the fact is that scenario is preventable and he knows it . No , if he says he’s happy tomorrow with what he’s got then for me he cannot use injuries for poor form ,not when he’s not had the balls to speak out and say what we all know and think.
