Game On! Newcastle v Hull City

Game On at SJP
Game On at SJP
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to our match article which will cover the visit of Hull City this afternoon.

It’s early days in terms of the Premier League season yet United have managed to tick along quite nicely in terms of results.

A 4-0 humping in our first game of the season wasn’t the best start, and our goal difference is still smarting from that, but four games unbeaten since the opening day has given supporters a cautious optimism. However it’s not just results that have mattered though as performances have also been better. Simply put we’re playing better football these days and there is a sense that if we can keep these players fit and performing we might actually be able to muster a decent season.

Standing in the way of us continuing our run today are Hull City managed by former Mackem manager Steve Bruce. He will no doubt want to prove a point as the last time he was seen at St James’ Park he presided over our fiercest rivals heaviest defeat on Tyneside in living memory.

It’s an interesting game on paper as United should have enough in the tank to despatch the newly promoted Tigers, but United always seem to struggle when they are favourites and that is something I’m very mindful of.

Team news will be added in below, in full, as and when it becomes available but it’s always worth checking the comments at roughly 2pm as team news is often posted there first.

Being a 3pm kick-off means that the game is not being shown live here in the UK but it is being broadcast overseas so finding a stream shouldn’t be too much of a hardship. If you do happen to stumble across a reliable stream then by all means share it by leaving a link in the ‘comments’ section below.

That’s just about it. Will we fall the right side of expectation today? Or will Hull City be celebrating a third win at St James’ Park in four seasons?

Howay the lads!

  1. Sunderland looked absolutely dreadful today. They are in it deep already with 1 point and a -8 goal difference. It looks good on Di Canio. First manager to be sacked without a doubt. I can’t see where they’ll get goals and now Fletcher is out as well. Poor at the back, poor in attack. Surely we’ll win in the Stadium of Blight.

  2. Solano-Aye we drop him. Don’t care if its Remy as CF or Goof but one of them needs to come in. His form 20 odd months ago was incredible, but he’s just a very average player.

      (Quote)

  3. @G2

Did you see when Fletcher went of they were down to 10 men because pdc had used all his subs early 😀 They are in deep **** this year. Though i am now a lot less optimistic about ourselves now as well. Still not as worried as the mackems should be 😀

  4. santi

He almost certainly wont be telling them to let players run off them at set pieces like they did for the 2nd goal.

‘We lost because we conceded 2 **** goals. 1 **** goal is ok but 2 is not.’

‘The problem today wasn’t about the defensive mistakes. It was the lack of attacking threat.’

The first statement was a direct contradiction of the second. 😯

  6. @NEWKIE & Toon TRW

You think i’m a WUM because i think Pardew is a **** manager?

I think you both are the WUM’s for thinking he is perfect for us.

Could you imagine Everton hiring Pardew instead of Martinez?

Or Swansea hiring Pardew instead of Laudrup??

Or Liverpool hiring Pardew instead of Rodgers???

It wouldn’t happen because Pardew is ****.

      (Quote)

  7. The game was there for the taking. Pushed up too much leaving us exposed a bit. But hey this is Newcastle we are supposed to playing 5 goal thrillers. Cisse still not on form, but credit to Hull. They played like a decent side. Perhaps the anti-Pards people would be happy with Brucie?

      (Quote)

  8. Toonsy/Premandup oot. You’re both gash.

KK-You’re a WUM because you think our squad is capable of competing with Spurs and because you implied we should be the 20th best club in the entire world. If you’re not a WUM you are bat **** insane, in either case i can’t be arsed getting involved with you.

Pardew is not perfect, where have I ever said he was? That statement just sums you up. I’ve said countless times, he’s an average manager and considering Ashley employed him and continues to employ him and has recently appointed someone even worse for the position above him, then i’m not filled with much hope if we sack him. That’s it.

      (Quote)

  9. Aye Santii I saw that. Di Canio is not suited to the Prem at all. Their owner must be pulling his hair out already. 😆 As for us, I still think we’ll finish between 11th and 14th due to lack of depth. Cisse is a huge problem as well. He is playing himself right out of the side. This has been going on for more than a season now so it’s not just a case of a bit of a slump. Overall he is a very average player and it is showing again and again. We need another quality striker in January without a doubt.

      (Quote)

  10. @DJG – 310

It’s not a contradiction. Read it properly.

If we didn’t concede, we wouldn’t have lost.

The bigger problem was the lack of attacking threat. I wouldn’t care if we lost this game as long as we knew how to threaten Hull.

    We didn’t.

As i say, Remy scored because Cisse mis-hit his shot & Cabaye had his shot blocked

      (Quote)

  11. SOLANOSTRUMPET
I was going to give Cisse as long as possible, as some people have said it would knock his confidence to be dropped etc. But…….it’s gone past that point for me now. Time for him to be dropped for Remy and Gouffran or Marveaux on the left against Everton IMHO. I would give him the Leeds game but when Remy is scoring (he should have had a hat-trick though) I would drop Cisse not. As KK just said, look at the lack of goals, that is the main centre forwards job and Cisse just isn’t doing it at the moment. What is it now? 10+ games without a goal, that is shocking.

  12. I’m with Toonsy and Prem…it’s not a menage et trois though….honest g’vnor 😯

Reet off for a few beers now, I’ll leave you lot to bicker amongst yourselves 😉 … oh and JJ, at least it’s the result you wanted 😉 😆
…oh aye and so far we haven’t lost any ground in the race for the Premier league title so it’s not all bad, smile people 😀
    …reet defo off now 😎

      (Quote)

  13. Solano,
Not the result so much that bothers me.

I’d have settled for a draw. But the continued errors that just seem to show no sign of improving.

Ie. The set pieces and diabolical defending.

      (Quote)

  14. JJ – these are adults FFS. If they can’t motivate themselves to give 100% and be fully committed to ariel battles?!.
Are you seriously suggesting that we don’t work on defensive, offensive play, set pieces and all of those things?.
We had 11 international footballers out there today. They are clearly coached well enough to catch the eye of the national managers – though I don’t know how many would have got selected off the back of today’s performance like.

      (Quote)

  15. @NEWKIE

Stop trying to brush the question aside.

Is Pardew better than the players he is managing or is he worse?

I think he’s worse but you clearly think otherwise.

Spurs are not this gigantic club you think they are. Sure they just spent £100m but most of the players they bought were below £15m. They have more games than us this season so need a bigger quality squad than us. That doesn’t mean we should just give up and not compete.

I can guarantee you that Everton will compete with the top 6. Probably Swansea too and Southampton are not far either.

If football was all about the money then yes, we should be the 20th best club in the world. As it happens, football is not just about money. It’s about management.

That’s why you see Dortmund in a CL final, & Everton consistently finish above us.

Your problem is that you blame mike ashley. I only really care about the footballing side and for that the buck stops with Pardew.

      (Quote)

  16. Cisse Gash as usual today. Playedwith 10 men most of the game waiting for the 11 to produce something special.

Really thought Remy was great but the goals we never carefully contrived but rather mis hit and deflection falling into our path much like Goufron’s goal against Villa.

      (Quote)

  17. SHARPY

Yes the players did make mistakes. Most players do in most games.

As i’ve already said, unless we have some truly awesome performances from individual players, we can’t score.

      (Quote)

  18. KK You are an example why people say Geordies are delusional (sorry if I offend any local folks here).

Do you think Ashley will hire Laudrup? Rodgers? Martinez? Will they come to work under Ashley in current circumstance?

It wont happen because Ashley is well, Ashley.

Are they better managers than Pardew? Probably.

You are just too ambitious for the club. If you want to support the best club in the world, go support Barca or Real Madrid. Or Manchester United because they always win at least. Newcastle will only become the best club in our heart. 😀

Sleep well mate, hope you can dream that Newcastle has become the best club in the world.

  19. I thought the whole idea of the blog was to express opinions. If we all agreed all the time it would be boring and I wouldn’t bother coming on. As it is we get a wide range of ideas, some very interesting, some a bit extreme, but always enjoyable to read.

      (Quote)

  20. It’s bad coaching that’s the problem.

What do they do in training? I don’t care if players switch off and we concede. It happens.

What should also happen but isn’t, is that we should actually be able to create real goal scoring chances. We’re not doing it because we have **** coaches and a **** manager.

      (Quote)

  21. Crystal Palace manager Ian Holloway says watching Swansea play inspired him to change his coaching methods.

The 50-year-old watched Swansea, who were managed by Roberto Martinez at the time, “four or five times” after being sacked by Leicester in May 2008.

“They made me realise how beautiful the game is and how passing and moving can make you a better defensive unit.”

  22. Sharpy,
I’m not saying we don’t work on it. But clearly we work on it wrong.

How is it possible to be so poor at set plays when they train every day of the week?

    Richie,
Not the result I wanted now. We needed to lose the last three. But we won, so Pards has a job till January at least. 😉 😛

      (Quote)

  23. Michael12 You are probably right but a goal is still a goal no matter how it comes. Mishit, deflection, blunders or crackers only count as 1 goal each time.

      (Quote)

  24. I was going to bring up Swansea again as well. I watched their Europa league game and they were brilliant. Laudrup has them playing so well, with great confidence on the ball. Beating Valencia 3-0 away is a real achievement. We aren’t in that class yet and may never be with Pardew and Ashley (I won’t even bother to mention Kinnear). The way ahead with us is never clear as we have too many obstacles within the club.

      (Quote)

  25. @Toon TRW – 327

Why is it delusional to think a better manager than Pardew would like to work at the club under the current conditions?

Ashley hired Kevin Keegan didn’t he? Not many people had a problem with him then.

Laudrup, Rodgers & Martinez could have ended up here had they been asked.

Pardew is here because of Derek Llambias. I really doubt he’ll be here for the next 7 years. Mike Ashley will get rid of him. He won’t replace him him Joe Kinnear but with someone else.

I’d rather sack Pardew and hope for a better manager, than stick with him and watch him screw up.

What’s the point in football if your target is to finish mid table?

People blame Mike Ashley but he is way better than Freddie Shepherd. He’s helped assemble the best team we’ve had since SBR.

Is it such a crazy idea that he might hire a better manager than Pardew?

Someone like Philippe Montanier who i’m sure Graham Carr is aware of.

      (Quote)

  26. Philippe Montanier just moved to Rennes and i highly doubt he would join us before next summer JJ.

Though he was my first choice to replace Pards before i realized he was keeping his job.

      (Quote)

  27. Mike Ashley does not interfere in the footballing matters.

The people responsible for the footballing side of things last season were Derek Llambias & Alan Pardew.

This season it’s Joe Kinnear & Alan Pardew.

I won’t have a go at Joe Kinnear (yet) as i honestly don’t think he has done anything (good or bad).

The problem is Pardew. We knew it when he was appointed. Some of us know it know. The rest of you Pardew supports need to wake up.

      (Quote)

  28. There is no point in finishing mid table KK mate. It’s only a point on the way to a proper destination. For me that would be top 6 (just) with European football and a manager who relishes the challenge. Not 10th with poor cup performances and a manager who doesn’t want to be challenged to find a way forward with the resources he has. We at least need ambition at the managerial level when we have an owner that offers so little.

      (Quote)

  29. @Santii

Yeah, i agree he might be reluctant to come now but we would be a really tempting opportunity for him & stranger things have happened.

Fatih Terim would also be an option.

It’s just about getting these names to Mike Ashley (presumably via Kinnear). I honestly don’t think he’s heard of Montanier, Terim or even Bielsa.

Mike Ashley is just an occasional football watcher. He doesn’t really follow the game.

      (Quote)

  30. Whey, it’s all doom and gloom on here tonight.
Cheer up, there are still plenty of games to go this season.
We had a similar result against Hull in 2008 , losing at home 2-1. That game was played in September as well. The result effectively kept Hull in the premiership.
    Oh ****, It relegated us.
Not to worry though, we’ve got a better manager and players now and we should avoid relegation.
Kim – only 33 points to safety.

      (Quote)

  31. Cheer up man we’ll win enough games and beat the monkeys, thats all that matters this season. We don’t want Europa League. ❗

      (Quote)

  32. Spot on G2

I’ve already said, if we had a rubbish set of players we could blame Mike Ashley.

As it happens he has assembled a fantastic team. The missing link to us being a force in the Premier League is some decent coaches and a good manager.

Swansea are doing way better than us and there really isn’t an excuse for it.

      (Quote)

  33. That’s the problem. Pardew has a top 10 target to keep his job as Derek Llambias has already said.

With the players Pardew has, that is a very easy target.

There is no risk of us getting relegated. There shouldn’t have been last season even with the extra games and injuries.

Without a change in manager we will win some, lose some and finish mid table. We’ll have games like today & games like last week. Most of all we, won’t be going anywhere, we won’t be progressing. Utter waste of talent.

      (Quote)

  34. SIDEKICK
I don’t know about others but I would love to see, Toon, Sunderland, ‘Boro, Hull and Leeds in the Premier League, the more North East/Northern teams the better. Not at our expense, but I hope Hull stay up.

      (Quote)

  35. Why is it so difficult for some managers & coaches who get paid £££££s, to actually study the game,

to see what methods other managers are using,

    to copy them,

    to tweak them etc

Why do they just do the same boring stuff in training and then go home instead of learning & developing.

      (Quote)

  36. But what do we want DJG? That seems to be a big discussion point. Do we want to pretend we’re going to contend for Champions League football? We aren’t, and there is no chance with Ashley clutching the purse strings. But we should challenge for 6th, 7th or 8th and we don’t seem to be headed that way. There are very few things we can change quickly, but one would be to get a decent manager. Pardew has had more than enough time and there is no consistency in our performances and no clear way ahead with him. His football vision is very limited and seems to center around basic survival and keeping his job. It shouldn’t be acceptable.

      (Quote)

  37. I don’t for one second believe Pardew is a top class manager. But I do believe in blaming those who are responsible – and today it was the players responsible for that defeat – simple as that.

    KK –
“I won’t have a go at Joe Kinnear (yet) as i honestly don’t think he has done anything (good or bad).”

I don’t get that like?. If you think he’s done nowt, surely that’s a bad thing and justifies you having a go?!.

      (Quote)

  38. I’m not criticizing Pardew for today’s game. I didn’t get to watch it sadly. But like many others I’m saying we’ve had more than enough of his management (more than 100 games now). It won’t take us anywhere we want to go. We won’t finish in the top 8, even with limited injuries and a cup run is out of the question because we don’t have the depth. We don’t have sufficient cover at RB or striker and we badly need a winger as well. We did almost nothing in the summer and it’s going to hurt us badly again this season. Joe didn’t do nearly enough. He didn’t part with players like Jonas, Willo, Obertan and Gosling and he didn’t bring any more competition or depth into the squad. He was a waste of space in other words and with Pardew as manager it means another season of disappointment. I don’t like saying it but it’s there for all to see again this time round.

      (Quote)

  39. Still gutted that we threw away 3pts today but going by some you would think we got hammered.

Sharpy yeah some players have to take their share of the blame.
KK do you really believe that Jabba is that thick that he doesnt know that with a quality manager that we would be a better team ?

      (Quote)

  40. @Sharpy17

Ordinarily, yes if you do nothing you get stick but….

Joe Kinnear has joined recently and so i’m giving him time.

Was it you that said Redmond would be a good signing for us? (it’s those kinds of things he should be making happen).

I’m giving him until the end of the 2014 transfer window for players & until January for him to replace Pardew with someone better.

Pardew (3rd longest manager at the club) has already has his chance. He’s had plenty of time. It’s over for him now. It was over before today.

      (Quote)

  41. “The team that finished 5th, you can see similarities, but that team had a consistency in performance as a team, not individuals.” AP

That’s true Pards. So now are you good enough to fix it?

      (Quote)

  42. @Big Dave

I honestly think Jabba would like to hire a better manager but he doesn’t know who…..

He doesn’t really follow football so how could he? Somebody needs to tell him what to do (i guess that’s Joe Kinnear’s job?).

Joe Kinnear probably hasn’t heard of Bielsa, Terim or Montanier so it’s down to us to push for Pardew to be sacked.

Hopefully the papers will name so decent managers and Joe will pick it up from there.

Alternatively Graham Carr could suggest Montanier.

      (Quote)

  43. Sidekick@341 ,Aye only 33 ,gonna be hard getting them going on todays effort. 🙁

As I see it we came out the traps flying . First 15/20 mins we looked fantastic and Hull couldn’t cope ,but the second they equalised everything changed if I’ve said it once I’ve said it a million times our Frenchies are confidence players and the Hull goal rocked them ,their heads drop and there is no leader on the field to lift the lads back into the game. We could really do with a dare I say Barton/Nolan type player or two to instil said grit and desire . I love our French guys but we need some grit ,be it British ,German ,Dutch what ever . Our defending was dreadful today ,forget Cisse or any other attackers, what’s the point of Remy doing the business twice if we leave acres of space for opposition forwards to get unmarked into our box 😳 not once but twice , pathetic. As for the winning goal ,well it was a piece of class , great goal Krul had no chance. I don’t like the way we never threaten at corners ,how can all our players be so poor on corners 😕 I have to ask what happens in training. Not entirely surprised at the result as Hull looked good at City and work hard as a team and don’t let their heads drop when conceding a goal.

      (Quote)

  44. Pardew is ultimately responsible for both results and performance, he needs to go, simple as that,

      (Quote)

  45. KK I dont believe that he is that stupid and if he is then he should sell up straight away.
He has the manager he wants simple as and he has the DOF he wants.
So how can he be doing such a good job at the club if he cant get the best men to run the club

      (Quote)

  46. Santii – It’s not about agreeing or disageeeing. It just bores me. Same **** different day. We played we lost. That’s about it really. Just how I see it 🙂

      (Quote)

  47. KK – Joe may have just started, but he’s a football man and has done this role at Luton so knows what is required. That aside, Pardew and Carr would already have a list of players wanted.
Yes he got Remy in, and that’s a good signing.

If he wanted time to review things before making permanent signings then fine. But then why wasn’t Lukaku, Ba, Sinclair or Moses signed by us?. A loan deal would have got Pardew the cover he needs and bought Joe time to get his head into the club.

The Mackems had a similar issue with O’Neils management style. They were buzzing that Di Canio would bring new ideas and move them forward – fast forward to them singing ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning!’ after today’s game and do you think they think it was a good move now?

      (Quote)

  48. Take a look at our goal difference again this season. It’s already very telling. A -3 goal difference and we’ve played some pretty poor sides already. It just looks a lot like last season again to me. We’ll finish somewhere between 11th and 14th. Not nearly good enough.

      (Quote)

  49. What’s with the Cisse bashing? I know he is an easy target after recent performances but today I thought he put in a reasonable shift and is showing signs of linking well with Remy. If you want to have a go at anyone today then pick Ben Arfa – or is he untouchable? I was at the match and I thought he was rubbish and atrocious. Should have been subbed first.
We started the match like champions but after scoring we stopped going forward and started messing around with the ball at the back. In the end Hull could have had five. What happened with the half-time talk. Hull keeper had nothing to do in the second half.

      (Quote)

  50. If Pardew continues to stick with Cisse I will begin to question his sanity again. No goals in 11 straight games now and almost no real sign of improvement. That can’t be acceptable. To continue to play him with no plan as to how to change things so that he is incorporated better into the team will add more fuel to the sack Pardew fire. Pardew must make some kind of real, positive changes that we can see are useful or what is the point? We don’t even need to go into the set piece problem obviously. No other team is as poor at set pieces as we are. Corners are a humiliating joke for us.

      (Quote)

  51. Kim we are badly lacking a real leader that has the balls to tell the players to sort their **** out, but the problem is do you think the frenchies would take being told ?

TGS there is lots of far better managers than Pards but do you really think Jabba would employ one ? as I dont, I firmly believe he has got the men he wants, and he will be happy to finish anywhere above 18th and weshould be comfortable mid table team.
I just think we deserve better and should be fighting around the Euro spots

      (Quote)

  52. Forgot to mention that our players were guilty of standing still waiting for the ball to reach them them. The Hull players read it nearly everytime and nipped in to take the ball. Ben Arfa doesn’t look fit to me.

      (Quote)

  53. No offense Groucho but no striker can go 11 straight games without a goal and not get criticized. It’s going to continue as well. I’ve watched him since he came to us and it’s just not there. The one timers from 18 yards or further out aren’t happening. He has no skill on the ball to speak of. If a defender comes anywhere near him he passes the ball backwards. I just can’t see it changing. I wish I could but I will have to see a tremendous change in form over a considerable length of time to be convinced.

      (Quote)

  54. I don’t think anybody is panicking yet but I see last season happening again with a slight improvement thanks to Remy. Already a -3 goal difference which is ominous for me and Cisse in absolutely shocking form. No cover for players like Debuchy that are struggling either.

      (Quote)

  55. G2 to be honest I know Cisse cant go on for ever but he has looked better in the last 2 games, but yeah he will have to start hitting the net soon other wise he will have to be dropped I just fear that dropping him now could leave us with a bigger problem, but I am starting to worry about him

      (Quote)

  56. Geordie How long did Shola go without scoring and for how long? However I don’t disagree with what you say I am just pointing out that Ben Arfa was the worst player on the park today and nobody has criticised him. Why not? Not only was he poor going forward he gave Debuchy no cover at all.

      (Quote)

  57. Good comments Big Dave and Groucho. Ben Arfa needs to be criticized fairly. When his moves don’t work and he loses the ball he can be a detriment to the team. I don’t think Debuchy can handle that when it happens. I’m not sure Debuchy is going to be the answer at RB and that worries me as we have done nothing to replace Simpson (Joe are you there?). And Cisse must score soon as you say Big Dave. That’s what he’s there for. He just doesn’t look like the same player to me as when he first came. The criticism will continue against many of the players until we see a string of well played games. Now we’ve got Leeds and we’ll need to field a different side. I think we’ll see Marveaux, Shola, Tiote, and possibly Dummett in there, along with Eliot in net. Let’s hope they all perform well.

      (Quote)

  58. I think KIMTOON @ 356 has pretty much summed it up.

Also Cisse needs the ball in space. I haven’t seen him once this season where he’s had the ball at his feet whist facing goal. We don’t get behind the opposition and we’re still not creating the chances that Cisse needs to score.

Cisse is our best goal scorer. But that’s all he is. Gouffran & Remy are much better rounded team players.

The problem is our playing style. To me it just looks like Pardew & the coaches just work through the same training sessions week in, week out. Pardew then picks the team, attempts to motivate it and then sends the players out.

    That’s not good enough.

Pardew was not Mike Ashley’s choice. Mike Ashley’s choice was Kevin Keegan, Joe Kinnear and then Alan Shearer (desperate choice).

Alan Pardew was hired by his biggest surpporter (Derek Llambias)

      (Quote)

  59. If we had done good summer business (it’s starting to sound familiar isn’t it?) we wouldn’t be in this spot. I can’t for the life of me understand it. Sell Obertan, Gosling, Willo, and Jonas for whatever you can get for them (grand total possibly 8M pounds). Bring in a competitive winger, right back cover to replace Simpson and a young striker with promise. That is the very least that should have happened. There is no point having a DoF if he is clueless and first blasts everyone while speaking complete bollocks, and then disappears.
