Game On! Newcastle v Hull City

Game On at SJP
Game On at SJP
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to our match article which will cover the visit of Hull City this afternoon.

It’s early days in terms of the Premier League season yet United have managed to tick along quite nicely in terms of results.

A 4-0 humping in our first game of the season wasn’t the best start, and our goal difference is still smarting from that, but four games unbeaten since the opening day has given supporters a cautious optimism. However it’s not just results that have mattered though as performances have also been better. Simply put we’re playing better football these days and there is a sense that if we can keep these players fit and performing we might actually be able to muster a decent season.

Standing in the way of us continuing our run today are Hull City managed by former Mackem manager Steve Bruce. He will no doubt want to prove a point as the last time he was seen at St James’ Park he presided over our fiercest rivals heaviest defeat on Tyneside in living memory.

It’s an interesting game on paper as United should have enough in the tank to despatch the newly promoted Tigers, but United always seem to struggle when they are favourites and that is something I’m very mindful of.

Team news will be added in below, in full, as and when it becomes available but it’s always worth checking the comments at roughly 2pm as team news is often posted there first.

Being a 3pm kick-off means that the game is not being shown live here in the UK but it is being broadcast overseas so finding a stream shouldn’t be too much of a hardship. If you do happen to stumble across a reliable stream then by all means share it by leaving a link in the ‘comments’ section below.

That’s just about it. Will we fall the right side of expectation today? Or will Hull City be celebrating a third win at St James’ Park in four seasons?

Howay the lads!

  1. 4-3-3 is only effective for us when Barfa is on form.

The players let Pardew down today.

    @Big Dave

You seem to forget. You are stating the obvious to TGS. The huge difference is , TGS would rather have Jokey in charge than Pards so his assessment of better managers differs from ours. 😯

    @Toonsy

I’m lost what you expect bloggers to say that’s going to make it interesting.

How many managers do you think would have the balls to do that after the start he has had.. might not be ready for the premier league just yet but i cant help but like him. Lets hope he continues to fail at Sunderland though 😀

I have to say the massive amount of optimism i had before the season started has taken a real knock today. I am hoping for a win against leeds i would wish we hammered them by 3 goals at least but we dont do big wins under alan pardew we do scrappy wins and thats about it.

  3. Ben Arfa didn’t have a good game but he didn’t have a bad game.

Hull specifically targeted Ben Arfa & Debuchy and we did nothing to counteract it.

Ben Arfa should have swapped flanks with Remy. Alternatively when Gouffran came on for Cabaye, Ben Arfa should have gone in the middle.

In any case, Ben Arfa is better through the middle than he is outwide. If he is ineffective in a specific position then he needs to be allowed to move.

      (Quote)

  4. Groucho my first post after the game was to say Ben Arfa was our worst player and i have seen a few others say he was bad aswell so people have criticized him.

      (Quote)

  5. Santon & Debuchy are both wingbacks or perhaps even wingers that have been forced to play full back.

Both of them in the same team can leave the centre backs vulnerable. I don’t think Krul has played good or bad and normally he’s fantastic for us (perhaps it’s because Harper isn’t around anymore?_

In the summer we should have swapped Cabaye for Sakho and played:

    ————————–Krul————————
    ———-Mbiwa——-Colo——-Sakho——–
    Debuchy——-Sissoko—–Anita—–Santon
    ————————Ben Arfa——————–
    —————–Cisse———–Remy————

      (Quote)

  6. With Cisse up front a pivot man behind him is crucial. That has to be Ben Arfa in the league games surely. Try 4-3-1-2 against Leeds Pardew. Play Marveaux as the pivot man to rest Ben Arfa. Play Cisse with Gouffran up front at least to start. A fair bit of choice for the 3 man midfield and we can have Dummet and Saylor in there to rest Santon and Colo. Eliot is fine in goal. Should be a fairly strong side.

  7. We can talk formations, systems, tactics & player selections but in the end it doesn’t matter. It’s more than just picking formations and players.

It’s about the manager & coaches drilling the players into set routines. They need to instruct the players on the positions that the players need to take up. What the players should do and when.

“Sometimes we wouldn’t see any of the strikers, because he’d have them training at a different time.

“It was the same with the midfielders.

“He’s an innovator and one of the people who I’ve learned most from during my career.”

      (Quote)

  8. Ferguson talking about Pardew:

“I haven’t spoken to him recently, but I admire his work.

“I see the emergence of a very good side. They’re very determined, organised and have a great belief in themselves – that’s the hallmark of the coach

“He’s instilled these qualities in his team and we know how difficult a game it’s going to be against them.

“This is the best Newcastle team I’ve seen for some years. Having watched their games recently, they press the ball very well and they’re not afraid to flood players forward in attack.

“They’re very positive and have no hesitation in committing themselves to attack at any point with a number of players.

“Newcastle have got different qualities from a lot of other teams. Their belief in terms of winning matches is very strong and that’s something we have to be prepared for.”

Ok, i lied. This was said by Sir Alex about a currently unemployed manager………

      (Quote)

  9. That’s a very interesting formation with the right players KK. The idea of Debuchy and Santon as wing backs is a very good one I think. Sakho would have been a fantastic signing and those 3 might have been able to pull it off defensively. It just looks like a very effective setup but it would require the right coaching and manager. Three men at the back has been tried a few times in the Prem but not very successfully. Chelsea, Man City and Wigan all tried it in the last couple of years but it does seem to get found out more often than not. Still, worth a try but we just don’t have the players for it right now and Colo is losing a bit of pace. I would settle for 4-3-1-2.

      (Quote)

  10. G2 the sad think is that when Benny needs criticised it normally means that we have lost, I just think thats a heavy burden to carry but I still think on a bad day he can still win us a game, but just not today.

KK how do you know that Pardew was Lambastads choice ?

Troy yeah TGS is quick at saying we should sack ” theFool ” but then as you say he would maybe be happy with JFK 😯

      (Quote)

  11. That’s true Big Dave. Benny needs proper team play around him and defensive support. That’s why I’d like to see 4-3-1-2. Surely we could at least try it?

      (Quote)

  12. Benny was poor but these are the things you have to deal with him in the side. He can be terrific and poor in one game and equally he can be terrific all game or poor all game as well. He doesn’t worry me as much as Cisse or Cabaye who have both been in poor form for well over a year now. Everyone was poor bar Remy today though. Goof looked alright when he came on. Santon was ok. That’s about it.

I don’t think Mike Ashley gets involved in the managerial appointments since he hired Joe Kinnear (first time).

“Llambias was a close ally and champion of Alan Pardew.”

“A key mover in Pardew’s recruitment nearly three years ago but in recent months perhaps not quite as close to Ashley as he had once been, Llambias may have found an outlandish Monday night radio interview given by Kinnear painful listening.”

My impression is that Mike Ashley bought the club to enjoy himself. The fans didn’t want Allardyce and Mike would definitely have heard of Kevin Keegan being a legend at the club. Mike Ashley hired Kevin Keegan to please the fans.

Mike Ashley also decided a DoF would be a good idea but i don’t think he chose who the DoF should be. That choice was down to Llambias and he chose Dennis Wise.

I think i remember Keegan saying he was not happy with Dennis Wise being in charge and told Llambias about it. Llambias didn’t care so Keegan so Keegan quit.

Mike Ashley tried to persuade Keegan to stay but he also didn’t want to overturn Llambias’s decision so Keegan quit.

Mike Ashley thought it would be a good idea to hire his good friend Joe.

A point in this situation is a minimum, especially at home… 👿 👿

I thought Anita was our best player today. So intelligent in his positioning and play. He’s always cautions but i suppose that’s his job, to keep the team ticking over.

He’s a real pain for the opposition when he closes people down and gets too close to them. They always make mistakes and do a quick pass backwards.

  16. Leeds are in 12th place in the Championship. W3, L3, D2, and a 0 goal difference. Can we give them a good game? I hope so.

      (Quote)

  17. I could accept losing if Hull played incredibly well but they didn’t……

Instead we played the way we normally play….

Even in the last game against Villa i didn’t see us playing with a particular style. I didn’t see any rehearsed 1-2 passes. It was all just a jumble and the team with the better players won.

The team is not organised. Nothing practiced. Nothing rehearsed.

      (Quote)

  18. Dave@388-it’s simple for the Ashley lovers, good choices are his, bad are Llambias’ or Pardew’s or Carr’s or Kinnears….even though he appointed the lot 🙄

      (Quote)

  19. KK it seems you find it impossible to put blame on Jabba, for me if he cant get the basics right then he’s at fault and shouldnt be in footie.
As fo not wanting to overturn Lambastads decision over KK well that just shows how weak Jabba is .

MM I tend to agree with you

      (Quote)

  20. Has anyone thought where we would be without loanee Remy ? 😯 😯 😯

Without his goals, and HBA’s occasional brilliance, relying on Cisse to pull us through ? Man we would be really in the ****. It’s all too risky if you ask me. Could it be that perservering with Cisse may actually be DESTROYING his confidence ? Maybe the lad NEEDS a stint on the bench, though I’m not sure how we can arrange that.

What’s the opinion on the blog ? Should we really perservere with Cisse until he gets things right ? The lad seems to be totally lost for months now… 🙁

      (Quote)

  21. @BIG DAVE

I blame Mike Ashley for not hiring the right people. Nothing else.

Other than appointing a **** Dof, Chief Exec, & Manager(s) i think the club hasn’t been run this well in decades.

I don’t really expect him to hire the best people for us because unless it’s somebody obvious and well known, he probably hasn’t heard of them.

      (Quote)

  22. I’m with you Munich mate. Cisse needs to sit now. Play Remy and Gouffran. What we’re trying with Cisse clearly isn’t working. I’m not writing him off but for the good of the team he needs some time out of the starting lineup. Which coach works with Cisse and the other forwards the most? Surely it’s time to change it up there as well. Pardew has said very little about him but surely he must be worried.

      (Quote)

  23. @ NEWKIE

    Mike Ashley hired:
    Kevin Keegan
    Derek Llambias
    Joe Kinnear (as manager)
    Alan Shearer
    Joe Kinnear (as DoF)

I think they were all bad choices.

    Derek Llambias hired:
    Chris Hughton
    Alan Pardew

Chris Hughton was a good choice. Alan Pardew was a bad one.

Why do you call me an Ashley lover? I’m just calling it as i see it and the way i saw it today, Mike Ashley & Joe Kinnear were not to blame for the defeat.

Some of the players deserve some of the blame. Most of the blame goes to the coaches and manager.

What is wrong with any of these views?

Cisse isn’t even close to scoring a goal. Can’t remember an attempt from him today. The problem is we have nobody else. For the sake of the team never mind Cisse he needs rested, we are playing with ten men

      (Quote)

  25. @Munich Mag

I think he should play the whole game against Leeds but i would drop him against Everton.

He would need the rest and i think he is lacking confidence. He’s also missing some of his love for the game

      (Quote)

  26. If Benny is going to neglect his defensive duties week in week out then Tiote and Anita need to play together at the back of midfield. Omit Cisse and tell Benny to roam the field looking for space rather than being stuck to the touchline

      (Quote)

  27. You’re just telling it like you see it as far as I understand KK. Blame in a team sport is always difficult to assign. Pardew is 47W 33D and 46L with us. The struggle for mediocrity will continue with him as manager I would say. Definitely not much more and hopefully not much less. Supporting him won’t destroy us, but it won’t lead to anything of significance either. If there was one thing I could recommend to Ashley it would be to bring in a top class manager and support him to the best of his ability. That would be the most positive thing he could do for the city, the supporters, and the club.

      (Quote)

  28. KK-I just don’t see how you can flippantly say KK was an Ashley choice and Pardew was a llambias choice, just because Pardew he was appointed while Llambias was in place. Otherwise did Mort appoint KK? As if.

Ashley will have had the final say in all club appointments. Maybe he is not bothered about all the player transfers-cheap ones-but he will be involved in all the big cases, and use his helicopter to ship players out if necessary (and he can take credit for the Carroll sale in that fashion). If he’s involved in them then he will obviously want to appoint the manager. Hughton because he was cheap, available and would take any job…..Pardew-exactly the same credentials…

      (Quote)

  29. @NEWKIE

It’s not flippant. Llambias was the Chief Executive. He was the man running the club. I’m sure he did run the big appointments by Mike Ashley but it was more keeping him in the loop rather than asking for permission.

Chris Mort arranged for Keegan to be hired. It would have been on instruction from Ashley. I’m not sure Ashley chose Keegan specifically but i do know that Chris Mort was looking managers that the fans would want because that was what Mike Ashley told him to do.

      (Quote)

  30. After the mess (most of it caused by Derek Llambias) Mike Ashley just doesn’t really listen to the supporters anymore.

He’s doing it his way. Pardew got his 8 year contract from Derek. I’m certain Mike Ashley will not keep him here that long unless Pardew has seriously got us challenging the top 6 every year.

Joe Kinnear will tell Mike Ashley it’s time to change managers, Mike Ashley will tell Joe to sort it & we will end up with a new manager.

The problem is Joe Kinnear knows almost as little as Mike Ashley about football.

I really hope Graham Carr suggests the next manager but for now Pardew has a job until next summer. Seriously. We will average 1.5 points per game, finish mid table and then Pardew will get sacked.

It will only happen sooner if we average 1 point per game between now and January.

      (Quote)

  31. KK I have asked but you havent answered how do you know Pards was strictly Lambastads choice ? Or is it just that that would suit your Jabba is god argument ?

      (Quote)

  32. Everton away next in the league. A definite challenge for us. Martinez looks like he’s getting settled in properly now. He’ll have some ideas about how to handle our attack. Baines is obviously a key for them. One of the best English players around now.

      (Quote)

  33. @BIGDAVE

Apologies, i thought i had already answered (post 391) but it probably wasn’t clear.

I can’t say 100% who hired who but from what i’ve read:

“Llambias was a close ally and champion of Alan Pardew.”

“A key mover in Pardew’s recruitment nearly three years ago but in recent months perhaps not quite as close to Ashley as he had once been, Llambias may have found an outlandish Monday night radio interview given by Kinnear painful listening.”

Based on the above i would say Derek Llambias hired Pardew but neither Derek or Mike have confirmed who is responsible. It certainly makes sense because i can’t possibly see why Mike Ashley would be interested in Pardew but i’m sure Pardew & Derek have a closer relationship (even before Newcastle)

I’m also of the opinion that Mike Ashley doesn’t follow enough football to make these decisions. I honestly think he delegates now and is just running the club as he would run a business.

When he first bought the club i think he just bought it for fun (as you do when you’re a billionaire).

      (Quote)

  34. I can’t see Pardew getting the sack if we finish mid table. That’s Ashley’s target surely. 😯

      (Quote)

  35. @BIG DAVE

I don’t think Jabba is god but he’s not the devil.

The club is in a very good place at the moment. The problem i have with Pardew & the coaches is that they are holding us back.

If we had **** players and Pardew & the coaches got the best out of them, i would see no reason to change. I just see so many players with unfulfilled potential.

      (Quote)

  36. KK but Jabba and Pards were friends so how do you know it wasnt his choice.
As for buying the club I think you will find that his no 1 reason for buying the club was to promote SD I thought that was well known .
Troy anything above 18 is jabba’s target

Other than appointing a **** Dof, Chief Exec, & Manager(s) i think the club hasn’t been run this well in decades………

They are some major appointments so to say it’s being run well apart from them does not make sense.

Since he’s arrived, he hasn’t decreased his loan which he wants back. In fact, he’s increased it by £30m. 🙄

      (Quote)

  38. Another fact not mentioned so far is that we have too many individuals out on the pitch rather than a team . When they play as a team it works well as in Remy’s first goal but then you have random pot shots when a well placed pass would be the better option as in Debuchy shooting from distance when he had 6 ,yes 6 players well placed ahead of him 🙄 . You can tell it’s a world cup year as too many trying to be the hero when it should be about the team . That’s one thing we can’t lay at Pards door. All the same ,he needs to bang some heads together and work on our corners cause they are beyond **** .

      (Quote)

  39. Surely we’ve not forgotten Pardew’s CV:

Sacked by West Ham (Premier League)
    Sacked by Charlton (Champioship)
    Sacked by Southampton (League One)

How does somebody getting sacked on their way out of league football get a job at one of the biggest clubs in English football?

  42. Spot on Kimtoon @421. Some very good points there lass. I think it’s been pointed out many times on here that the team often doesn’t play like a team. Under pressure we tend to break down and play as individuals. Ben Arfa still wants to do it on his own too often and once the defense gets unsettled the hoofball begins. Our methods of keeping possession still aren’t good enough a lot of the time. I’m not sure it’s in Pardew’s nature to really adopt the possession game so I’m not expecting it anytime soon.

      (Quote)

  43. Lukaku immense yet again then. Seriously why didn’t we go for him on loan? He is absolutely great at bringing others into the game-something we need from a centre forward in this side. Even if we’d just had him and Remy on loan it would have been acceptable if we could have at least bought Remy at the end of the season.

      (Quote)

  44. G2 ,I know you missed the match today but we got very straggly in the second half ,just went to pot really .Funny enough though Remy could and perhaps should of got a hat trick as he missed from 2 yards out in the 89th 🙄 summed the day up really mate.

      (Quote)

  45. Agree its mental how Chelsea has let him go again what a player he looks easily chelsea’s best forward. We play Everton next and im not looking forward to it at all we can barely handle Danny Graham never mind Lukaku.

If we get a few bad results in the next few weeks then i dont see Pardew being able to turn it around and we will have a worse year than last year.

I think Bafe Gomis would have been a great signing as he offers that great hold/link up play and we would be a much more dangerous in the attacking 3rd. Lets hope we get him on the cheap in January like i think we will…

      (Quote)

  46. Consistency is one thing we haven’t had for a long while now. We play a decent game, then a bad one, then an indifferent one. With Everton and Cardiff next, both away, this doesn’t bode well. Everton are undefeated and Cardiff will be tough as well. I see no pattern being established to suggest we are going to be a top 8 team this season. If we took 4 of 6 points from the next 2 league games I would be encouraged but I don’t think it’s likely. Much more likely we’ll get 1 point from the next 2 (a draw with Cardiff). That would give us 8 points from 7 games. About on par with last season.

      (Quote)

  47. Thanks for that Kimtoon @429. Yes I keep hearing we let it all get away from us in the second half. Frustrating to say the least. Remy is our best striker by far and he doesn’t even really belong to us. That is not a good way to run a club. If Joe can’t do something in January he should be gone.

      (Quote)

  48. KK I am not surprised that you are tryong to put the blame on Lambastad rather than Jabbs but on the end it is up to jabba to hire the right men and if he doesnt then he isnt doing a very good job

ultimately Jabba needs to hire the right people. In fact, he only needs to hire one decent DoF or Chief Exec.

  52. Pardew and his backroom really need to see how other managers train their players.

There was a time Pardew was one of the most promising managers in English football. There is nothing promising about him now but all is not lost.

Pardew just needs to realise it and learn from other managers. The players are certainly better than what we’ve seen.

  53. Bielsa’s training sessions:

Synchronisation is fundamental, attacks automatic, movement mechanised, the pitch partitioned with tape, moves constructed and deconstructed piece by piece, passes made instantly.

The circulation is constant. One exercise involves eight squares: two players cannot occupy the same space; if a team-mate enters your square, you vacate it. Crossing and shooting exercises, following specific, interchanging “passageways”, do not end with the shot but with players sprinting back into their starting positions.

Defence and attack are not separate.

Too many ball watching mids when we were in defence… i think we went out expecting to win and hull went out trying to win., we lacked that bit urgency and intensity…

I can’t wait for the week of Pardew is a **** manager posts 👿 which is fair enough because the subject hasn’t really been discussed in any great detail…

      (Quote)

  58. @AMF

We didn’t really attack properly. There were no clear chances. We can’t create chances like other teams from open play and we certainly can’t score from set plays.

We could just say it’s one defeat but it’s not really, is it?

There haven’t been any changes to correct the mistakes we made last season. We are still playing in the same way only with better players.

  63. Have a rational debate about all things Newcastle? (with the emphasis on ‘rational’)

Annoying bloody loss that one. I don’t think Pardew can be BLAMED for the loss, but I didn’t see much in the way of a plan B, whether Pardew can be blamed for that or whether Hull simply nullified everything is open to debate.

Frankly, I don’t think we played badly overall – it was nice to see some attacking play and trying to play balls into feet in and around the penalty area. But Hull defended really well, stuck to a tight defensive game plan, crowded out Ben Arfa and swamped the midfield as they went forward. Scored a great goal as well.

We couldn’t find a way to change things; everything we tried was snuffed out. Awful defending for the goal after half time – again, like at Villa.

It seems that many people forget that there are TWO teams that play a game of football. Hull got it right on the day. It happens. That’s why there are no easy games.

Pardew has to take the blame for no plan B. His subs were terrible. In two and a bit seasons I have seen enough to know Marveux is not a wide player. Where did he play him wide left and right. The subs should have been marveux for cabaye. Gouffran for Cisse. Ameobi for ben arfa
