Game On! Manchester United v Newcastle United

Game On at Old Trafford
Game On at Old Trafford
Good morning one and all. Its an early start today as two United’s clash at Old Trafford. Those two being Manchester and Newcastle United.

Oncs upon a time those two United’s used to be rivals and went toe-to-toe for the Premier League crown.

We fluffed it whilst the Red Devils didn’t and the rest is, as they say, history. Manchester United went from strength to strength whilst we fell away, but there will always be a part of me that is left wondering “what if”. What if we did hold out? Where would we be now? Would we have been able to take a seat near the top of the Premier League table for a more sustained period?

I guess it doesn’t really matter now. That was many years ago now but today is all that matters. As detailed in my match preview, Manchester United have been shaky so far this term but they do have a habit of performing against us.

They are without Wayne Rooney, who again has a habit of performing against us, but they still have dangerous players. Check out the full team news below.

The match itself is being broadcast here in the UK via BT Sport and is also being shown worldwide so picking up a stream should be fairly easy. If you do find a good stream then by all means feel free to leave a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

On paper there has never been a better time to play at Old Trafford but I’m still not expecting anything. A better performance than what we saw at Swansea would be a start though.

Howay the lads!

Manchester United: David De Gea; Rafael, Jonny Evans, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra; Nani, Phil Jones, Tom Cleverley, Adnan Januzaj; Javier Hernandez, Robin van Persie

Newcastle United: Tim Krul; Mathieu Debuchy, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini, Davide Santon; Yohan Cabaye, Cheik Tiote, Vurnon Anita; Moussa Sissoko, Loic Remy, Yoan Gouffran

Subs: Rob Elliot, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Gabriel Obertan, Jonas Gutierrez, Hatem Ben Arfa, Shola Ameobi, Papiss Cisse

  1. We deserve the win. Not by much but enough for a 0-1 win.

Every player played decently & quite a few played even better. Debuchy, Tiote, Remy. Tiote was probably the best.

Our midfield is so much better with anita in the there. Tiote doesn’t have to worry about his positioning or where to pass once he’s won the ball because anita has it covered. More games with anita, tiote & cabaye please!

I can’t help but wonder how much better we would have been if the likes of gouffran, cabaye & remy were rested agains swansea.

We weren’t anywhere near to our best today but we still beat man utd at old trafford.

Credit to pardew. He took most of my advice & he’s reaping the rewards now!

  2. We didn’t just win today, we played well. We stopped Man Utd playing, they looked totally clueless. Brilliant to see the fans leaving early.

Hats off to the likes of Boots and TGS giving credit where it’s due. I think Pardew has used his squad brilliantly well today, and to play Cabaye, Tiote and Anita was a great call. They totally controlled the game tonight.
Today for me proved that Pardew fully deserved the recognition of manager of the month!.

    41yrs man …. Fantastic day for us Geordies 😛 😛 😛

  3. Its probably a good thing that Cabaye will miss next week. He look out on his feet, a week off will do him no harm..

  4. I have too hold my hands up and admit i doubted Pardew could take us too the next level ,he has proven his doubters including me wrong . We have a good manager that can replicate the days of Sir Bobby of that i am now sure . i was 2 the last time we won at Old Trafford so thanks Mr Pardew it was a long wait .

  5. Thought we were mint today, controlled the game – Pards even made good changes and had a decent game plan
Tiote was my motm but close thing – Debuchy is on track to win player of the season with his performances so far

    Happy as fook

      (Quote)

  6. Pards oot – we should have won 5-0 and we only won because the players decided to ignore his **** tactics

  7. Stevep, we don’t have game plans mate, JJ has told me as much a number of times now 😛

  8. Saw one comment….

Thus far, Newcastle has picked up points against Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and now ManU…. two of these being wins on the road. I think it’s time to start seriously including them in the discussion about finishing in the top 4.

    😯 😉

  9. What do ya call that lineswoman is it massey or something like that. Every game i have seen her in she gets every big decision right.

Considering we have had a few dodgy calls go against us the last few weeks i was so glad to see her flag up in the air.

Nani the dirty we ******* should have been sent of as well. It pisses me of so much that nothing was made of that dirty challenge. If it happened to one of the top 4/5 teams you could bet your house that it would be a disgrace and lucky to be on the field.

      (Quote)

  10. Wouldn’t it be great if we made one or two quality signings and really pushed those top four.

What happens to Man United financially if they fail to qualify for Champions League? Just how in debt are they?

      (Quote)

  11. Debuchy played well today but worrying he came off with a limp – hope that’s just cramp or something not too serious.
Tiote and Sissoko were my men of the match today. Toots was solid in the middle, but Sissoko was a decent threat going forward and had great vision and composure for Cabayes goal. But he also provided great cover for Debuchy today as well.

I’m fucking buzzing with that game today like!!!!

I was -7yr old when we last won there 😆 😆

  12. AOD

Aye but look at the teams we have lost against. We will finish top 10 but we should not be getting carried away.

One extreme to the other…. oh the joy of being a Newcastle fan

      (Quote)

  13. I woudn’t consider “Joy” as a right word being a newcastle fan…

    Hazardous…. 😳 😳

  14. **** me we have some old gits on this blog like 😆 . i was born 16 years after we last beat Man United 😛

      (Quote)

  15. Santii – leave context for tomorrow mate, let yourselves get carried away for 24hrs man buddy 😉
Tomorrow my priority will still be to get that 40 points mark ASAP …. But tonight we’ll win the fucking league!!! 😛 😛 😆 😆

  16. @AXEL – 231

Calm down mate. Pardew has improved slightly but moving onto Sir Bobby’s level is a completely different thing.

I’m one of his doubters & he hasn’t proven me wrong yet.

This squad is good enough to challenge for a top 4 place. Most seasons we won’t make it but some seasons we should.

If we do make top 4, Pardew will get alot of deserved praise but anything less & in my opinion he’s just doing his job to a decent standard.

If we finish with less than 60 points, he would have done a rubbish job.

  17. How bad will Man Utd’s season have to be before Moyes gets the sack?

I was under the impression that the club wanted to give him time in the same way SFA had time, so Moyes doesn’t have to win anything for a couple of seasons but…

if he finishes 5th, does he get the sack?

      (Quote)

  18. Moyes wont be getting sacked tho.
He is “The chosen one” don’t you know.
But they will have to spend hundreds of millions of pounds to get back in the top 4 next season.
Absolutely loving it.  😆

      (Quote)

  19. I think Moyes is doing badly, but there squad isn’t as good as the top 3’s. And not much better than Spurs/Liverpool’s considering how injury prone Vidic/Carrick/RVP seem to be.

  20. their*
If we draw/beat Soton we will have more points at this stage than we had in our 5th place season

  21. Fantastic result and have to credit Pardew with the set up and tactics. I was 17 the last time we won at OldTrafford 😯
Debuchy and Tiote were my joint MOM but have to give credit to Williamson again. The lad has settled and looks more confident for a run of games. Thought he was immense and won everything in the air.

      (Quote)

  22. Pardew is definitely going to be next in line for the England job after the WC.
    Keep it up son 😛

      (Quote)

  23. We’re 9 points better off than last season.

We have just as many points as we did in the season we finished 5th.

Pardew has improved slightly. The squad has improved even more.

A couple of defeats in a row & we’ll be back to midtable mediocrity.

A couple more wins & we could really challenge for 4th.

      (Quote)

  24. KK – “Pardew has improved slightly.”
Have to disagree mate. He has actually improved vastly and has/is still learning from his past mistakes.
I doubted his game plan today, but he got it spot on AGAIN.
5 wins out of the last 6 is no mean feat.

      (Quote)

  25. We do better when we’re the underdogs.

I don’t know if Pardew lets the players get too confident or if it’s the players on their own but when we’re playing against ‘easier opposition’ we don’t do enough.

Man Utd have a huge hole in midfield. It’s nice to watch them squirm.

      (Quote)

  26. Newcastle’s Chieck Tiote: “We knew it would be difficult to come to Old Trafford and win. We think we played well and that is why we won the game. The second half was difficult for us because they tried to create chances but we stayed compact. We kept the ball and that is why we won the game.

“When you win a game you get confidence. We beat a lot of good teams, the key in our team is we play together, we work hard and we close down. That is a big, big win, we will never forget that.”

      (Quote)

  27. Newcastle manager Alan Pardew: “It’s one of the top moments in my time here, it’s been 41 years we’ve been waiting. A magnificent performance. I know we won’t get the headlines because of United and David Moyes, but we deserve them because the players were magnificent.

“I asked them to play differently today, to keep the ball and we did that. We made it difficult for them and it’s a great day for us.

“I thought we were worthy, we had control and they didn’t have too many moments. When the game was controlled I thought we were in charge. I thought Hatem Ben Arfa changed the game off the bench and he now knows the sort of work rate you need in this team.

“It is tough for David Moyes and I thought events worked against him with no Rooney. He’s a great person and great manager and the best thing this club can do is stick by him. They’ve done that before and he’ll come out smiling.”

      (Quote)

  28. @bb

I wouldn’t say he has improved vastly because what has he improved vastly at?

His tactics & substitutions are pretty similar to last season. Last season too many injuries, out of form players & too many games resulted in us finishing low but we weren’t far off a top 10 finish.

He should be doing better with this group of players. It’s the best squad we’ve had since we were last in the champions league!

We’ve had a mixture of good periods & really bad periods over the last 5 games. 4 wins out of 5 is impressive but we’re nowhere near our peak yet.

Hopefully Pardew proves me wrong & really does manage to get the best out of out players (consistently). I doubt it but 4 wins out of 5 has brought him time to prove me wrong.

      (Quote)

  29. Newcastle United midfielder and matchwinner Yohan Cabaye: “We had to come back to the basics to win the game and that is what we have done. The manager told us before the game (about Newcastle’s record at Old Trafford), maybe it was the right time to to come here and win the game.

“We were just focused on the game to do the right things, stay solid and we are all happy today.

“No more pressure on us. The league this year is quite open. The big teams are on the top and it is very hard too say who are going to league, we are sixth or seventh and get some confidence to play relaxed and not think about the relegation.”

      (Quote)

  30. its 5 wins out of 6 mate.
Consistency is the word, you’re right.
Seems like we are getting some.
getting rid of the relegation threat lifts a big burden off the players.
you say Pardew should be doing better with this group of players. I don’t see how.

      (Quote)

  31. We are sixth or seventh and get some confidence to play relaxed and not think about the relegation.” ❓ ❓ ❓

We’re 5 points from 2nd place, we’re going to win the league 😆

  32. Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul: What a win that is .. 41 years last time we won at old Trafford.. Great spirit and believe again.. Nice journey home.

  33. @bb

Pardew has done well results wise. He’s done better than he had to. Wins against Chelsea, Spurs & Man Utd! It’s the kind of form a champions league team has!!

What he should be doing better is getting the players to fulfill their potential & ability on a consistent basis.

We’ve seen some consistency but Swansea is a typical example of where there isn’t any consistency.

Ben Arfa, Cabaye, Cisse, Tiote, Sissoko, Anita, Remy, Gouffran!! Our team is fantastic but we haven’t seen any of these players at their best…yet.

      (Quote)

  34. The Swansea match was a brain fart from Pardew.
He has put his hands up and admitted such.
    I respect him for that.
He got it wrong and we paid the price.
No one expects him to be perfect, else he wouldn’t be here.
At the end of the day, all that matters is the result.
Particularly considering the current schedule of matches, 2 wins from 3 matches in 7 days is very very good.

  40. Not bothered about Stoke just yet, but next week we have Southampton, who will give us a real test.
The way they are going, I’d probably be happy with a draw.

Have a read mate and enjoy.
No I don’t want him sacked, it looks bad on the club at the end of the day.
I am now waiting for him to get the England job after the WC 😛 😛

  44. In all seriousness Troy, he deserves more credit than the media are giving him.
But it’s all about Moyes 👿

“Let’s give Newcastle some credit, the tactics they employed were spot on. Remy is fantastic player, Sissoko was excellent so Alan Pardew has to have a lot of credit.
