Cabaye’s Christmas cracker! Crystal Palace 0-3 Newcastle

Cabaye crushes Palace
Cabaye crushes Palace
Newcastle produced a dominating performance to brush aside Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, with Yohan Cabaye proving to be instrumental in the victory.

The France international scored one and could have had a couple more with a bit more fortune as he pulled the strings in midfield.

In truth United deserved the win and the three goal margin that came with it. Crystal Palace were simply blown away in the first period and despite fighting back for a brief spell at the start of the second half they never really looked like causing Newcastle any problems.

The start of the match was rather drab with United perhaps just shading it purely through the amount of possession they managed to maintain albeit without really threatening the Crystal Palace goal.

That changed on 25 minutes though as Cheik Tiote set Moussa Sissoko free on the right. The former Toulouse man cut in and played the ball back to Cabaye who stroked the ball home via a slight deflection off Mile Jedinak.

There was a nervy moment soon after the opener however as Crystal Palace nearly equalised through a Tim Krul error. The Dutchman came to claim a cross but flapped at the ball which inadvertently bounced off Mike Williamson only for Vurnon Anita to hack clear off the line.

But that would have been harsh on Newcastle and six minutes before half-time the lead was doubled through Danny Gabbidon who turned a Mathieu Debuchy cross into his own net under slight pressure from Loic Remy.

Half-time: Crystal Palace 0-2 Newcastle

The home side rallied in the windy conditions at the start of the second period and forced a sequence of corners which were all dealt with by the United defence. However it was Cameron Jerom who blew the Eagles’ best chance of getting back into the game as he blazed an effort from seven yards over Tim Krul’s goal.

From then on the treat subsided and Newcastle became the dominant force in the match again. Hatem Ben Arfa came on and almost had an immediate impact as he dribbled into the box and laid the ball off for Yoan Gouffran who smashed an effort from 20 yards off the crossbar before the former Marseille man tested Speroni with an effort himself.

Ben Arfa wasn’t to be denied though and when Shola Amoebi was sent tumbling in the box it was Ben Arfa who struck home the resulting spot-kick to give the scoreline a more realistic reflection of how the game actually panned out.

Full-time: Crystal Palace 0-3 Newcastle

It was a good performance by us. Palace may have been struggling but they’ve been good in recent weeks and pushed Chelsea all the way at Stamford Bridge so this result, or any result away in the Premier League, is a good one. We controlled the match and 67% of the possession seems to back that up.

The win gives us 30 points prior to Christmas which is better than many of us imagined I’d think. We now have homes games against Stoke and Arsenal over the festive period to contend with. It’s early days of course, but would you bet against us having 36 points by the turn of the year the way we’re playing at the moment?

Howay the lads!

  1. a great performance y’day. 5 wins away from home. 2 wins less then top spot and two defeats more..

If only we had of beaten Hull and West Ham at home and beat the mackems away, we’d be top..

Not good enuf.. Pardew out! 😆

  2. Sometimes a team will win despite the manager (eg 2 wins in 2 games from Ben Arfa at the start of the season).

Other times a team will because of the manager.

Ultimately though the manager needs to take responsibility for how well or badly their team have done. No excuses such as injuries, bad luck etc.

I’m no fan of Pardew but at the moment he is doing his job & he is doing it well.

I think we’re a club that should be getting a minimum of 60pts a season.but we should really be challenging for 4th. Pardew has got us challenging & the performance have been better too!

      (Quote)

  3. If we do make it to 4th (big if!), we would expect Mike Ashley to make some signings, right?

Wouldn’t it also make sense to replace Pardew for a manager that has managed in the Champions League?

It would be very harsh but no different to what happens when some teams get promoted.

      (Quote)

  4. lol ashley spend big.. more chance of selling big..

why wouldnt we keep Pardew if we got to the champs league, surely he would deserve a crack at it considering he got us there.

What happens when we get knocked out, sack the Champs Lge manager for another?

I was thinking in terms of improving the club. If pardew has us consistently finishing 8th, would that guarantee him a job for life? Or do we want to see year on year improvements?

Some managers get their teams promoted, perhaps deserve a chance in the premier league, do badly & get replaced.

What does it take for pardew to be replaced or does he have the most secure job in the league?

      (Quote)

  6. Hopefully everton lose & arsenal win.

Southampton seem to haven fallen away. They really need a bigger squad, the next few games will be tough for them with such short rest periods.

      (Quote)

  7. KK, it’s difficult really as even if he consistently was getting us into the top 8 you could argue that he’s doing enough, given the restrictions he’s working under. By that I mean no big transfer kitty to get the quality of personal required to take that next step forward into top4. Whether he has the quality to manage well at CL level is another question altogether , tbh I doubt he has but it would certainly be interesting to see if Ashley would stick with him if we made CL position.

      (Quote)

  8. KK – look at the success Martinez is having at Everton. That is largely down to stability that Moyes brought to the club having consistently finishing 6-8ish. Of course we should aim higher but we need stability and to establish ourselves as a top 6-8 team in the league on a consistent bases first – IMO.

Would you replace Pardew with AVB – he has CL experience, or what about RDM who won the cup?.

      (Quote)

  9. KIM imo jabba would stick with pardew as top managers cost money plus dont think they could work with this set up

I actually think overall, mike ashley has been a postive for the club.

I don’t think he has ever tried to annoy the fans intentionally. His big negative point is hiring the wrong people.

Otherwise i would say everything else he has done has been a good thing.

I also don’t think he is an alien.

Everything he has done at the club has had a certain logic to it – definitely no unpredictable.

      (Quote)

  11. KK i still think jabba sees us as a money making machine at the end of the day, just my thoughts on him mate

      (Quote)

  12. @kimtoon

I don’t think pardew is under any unusual restrictions.

He is not in cotrol of transfers but mourinho & pellegrini are not either. Barcelona & real madrid also sign or sell players regardless of what their managers think. I would guess it happens at most clubs.

I would expect mike ashley to stick with pardew as he already knows pardew.

Personally i wouldn’t stick with him as i think pardew is limited but that would also be very cruel.

      (Quote)

  13. @KK

Pardew is limited. he’s promised players every season to see ne1 arrive.

I doubt Mike would want a decent manager as they’d expect a budget every season. Pardew seems content to toe-the-line even if he gets flak from the fans every now and then and I think Mike’s totally happy with that.

      (Quote)

  14. @sharpy17

I agree, stability with the right manager is a big positive.

Martinez & everton is a bad example though. Otherwise we’d have to say moyes in struggling now because of the frequent managerial changes man utd have had over the last 25 years!

I wouldn’t say everton are doing better this season because of what moyes did last season & in previous seasons.

Moyes took everton as far as he could but i think martinez is better & could take them further. The change should have happened regardless of wheather ferguson retired or not.

It should be the same as replacing a bad player with an average one.

You’d replace a decent player for a good one. Surely the same should apply to coaches, managers, medical staff, director of football, scouts etc?

      (Quote)

  15. @mark

Our squad has improved since pardew has been here but i very much doubt that it was down to pardew.

I also don’t think a decent manager would demand transfers. Quite the opposite i would have thought.

A managers job is to manage the players he already has & to get the best out of them as a team. A manager dealing with transfers is very old school imo, i doubt we’ll see it in the top leagues in the future.

A manager should just define the type of player they need for the team, nothing more. The transfer fee or player age etc shpuld be none of the managers business.

Alot of managers also toe the line. Even mourinho.

      (Quote)

  16. @icedog

There are alot of easier ways to make money than buying a football club. Also money is not as important to a billionaire as it is to us.

The reason mike ashley is tight with transfers isn’t because of the sums involved. To him it’s all the same, £1m or £10m. He just wants to know that he’s buying value for money & not getting ripped off.

    It’s worked so far.

      (Quote)

  17. People keep saying Pardew has to work under difficult constraints. What a load of ****. What he gets his team improved year on year? Very good job security? Good scouting system? Works with some great players?

Ohh wait our best players might be sold for large amounts of money that will be reinvested into the team. Who in their right mind could do such a thing. Mike Ashley and his Third Reich

English teams are nearly the only teams in world that don’t use a director of football and you can see even that is starting to change. People will say having to work with Joe Kinnear is a constraint what has he done so wrong in terms of his job role? Stopped Cabaye our best player from leaving and got our top goal scorer in on loan. Nothing spectacular but nothing bad either.

A load of managers would love to have all these “constraints” that Pardew is under. Poor Alan Pardew how does he do it…..

      (Quote)

  18. I’m sure mourinho would considering toeing the line at newcastle totally different compared to Chelsea. we only spent 2mil on Remy, we also saved on players wages as we sold players and made a mill on Perch.

Whereas Chelsea released loads but spent 63mil im sure quite a few managers would be happy with this set-up 😆

      (Quote)

  19. Stability is over rated, Chelsea have changed managers almost every year and still managed to win something every season, Man City pretty much following that model although it obviously helps having almost unlimited funds. It’s obviously a risk at a club like ourselves / Everton where funds are limited

      (Quote)

  20. I’m inclined to agree with Ice, I think he sees the club as a drain on his finances and has reached the stage where he won’t spend on the club unless he can get a decent return as in a cheap relatively unknown player with promise or a good player coming out of contract. I have no problem with that in itself but if he has any ambition to see us compete with top 4 in the league he will at some point have to spend that bit more on a quality goal scorer and hang on to our talisman players. If we keep selling our stand out stars and replacing them with another up and coming star only to sale them too then all we do is stand still. Idon’t think football club ownership will ever make an owner rich, for most it’s an ego thing where they throw cash at it in an effort to win a cup/the league, certainly that’s the case with Chelsea,Citeh, and to a certain extent Manure and Liverpool, though both those clubs have great history that wasn’t bought in quite the way Chelsea and City’s have been. Quite what Ashley wants I’m not sure, he doesn’t seem in any hurry to offload us, yet it seems he isn’t really fussed so long as we stay in the league, all very luke warm really.

      (Quote)

  21. @mark

    Fair point about mourinho 😀

In terms of lack of transfer activity, i honestly don’t think we needed to do much. A striker might have been good but we already have cisse on the bench.

Our squad is very strong considering we don’t have european games. Especially when mbiwa, ben arfa & even anita struggle to get game time. Even players like marveaux & staylor can’t make the match day squad.

      (Quote)

  22. @KK

we don’t need much, thats the problem.. will we get that little we need? Will Remy be replaced adequately in the summer? will Cabaye be replaced?

If not, a decent manager wouldnt be happy with these decisions. Pardew would just smile & soldier on telling us we can’t compete with Real Midrid 😆

      (Quote)

  23. What “restrictions” does he work under Kim?

I’m not his brother i am just not a sheep and can form an opinion based on evidence.

      (Quote)

  24. @kimtoon

I think mike ashley said when he bought us that he was prepared to pump (perhaps drip is a better word?) something like £10m a year into the club without taking anything out.

Personally i have no problem with that at all. I do think he would sell us if someone would pay him a fair price for the club but only because some fans went over the top & made death threats etc.

I disagree about man utd not buying success in the same way as chelsea & city though. I would say man utd pioneered the approach of buying success.

You ask a question based on two things that haven’t even happened yet.

“Will Remy be replaced adequately in the summer? will Cabaye be replaced?”

How is anyone supposed to answer that?

      (Quote)

  27. @mark

You’re right, we only need a few more additions but i do think we’ll get them.

This was posted by somebody else:
No need to panic. Ashleys transfer record has been very successful apart from Milner every other transfer has been a success.

Nolan out cabaye in . Carroll out two dembas in. Enrique out Santon in. Simpson out debouchy in . Many more key additions . He might not be everyone’s cup of tea but he is steering the club in the right direction . Cabaye won’t leave in January if they are going to sell him it will be after the world cup after his price most likely goes up .

      (Quote)

  28. @ KK

its very debateable that santon is better than Enrique in fact would say enrique was better meself and at least he was left footed

      (Quote)

  29. @KK

aye we have a great squad of players, let hope we keep it that way as we’re on a good run. Any hesitation in the transfer market IF Remy or IF cabaye goes could be bad for the club..

      (Quote)

  30. Santi@30 ,well for starters he has no ‘ real ‘ input on players in or out, he constantly said Carroll was going nowhere when, oops 😳 . Then we find out that the board say cups and Europe are not priority just staying in the league is the remit 😯 ,which begs the question why the hell is Pards even bothering or the fans bothering to spend their cash if that’s the level of ambition. Fact is Pards was well out in the cold, job wise and Ashley threw him a lifeline, in return he has to put up and shut up, sorry if that isn’t what you wanna hear but it’s my firm belief . Oh and his employer is a proven liar as shown in court proceedings in the KK case.

santons only young yet but 1 thing hes got to work on is stoping the cross comeing in from his side hardly ever gets the block on the cross

  32. “well for starters he has no ‘ real ‘ input on players in or out”

As i have said having a director of football or someone else in charge of transfers isn’t a hindrance. I am glad Carroll went thank god we have a sensible owner. 😳

saying cups are not a priority this season after a relegation threatened season would be common sense really.

“proven liar as shown in court proceedings” rabble rabble rabble Clutching at straws when you mention Carroll and this lol

      (Quote)

  33. TAE you could argue for Santon or Enrique but you have to say are left back position is a lot stronger depth wise than it was.

  35. Agree Haidara has looked very solid every time he has played for us. Hope your right mark but it will be hard for him to get game time and i can see it becoming a problem later down the line. Maybe one of them will have to go or change position

      (Quote)

  36. Santi@45, Stop being pedantic, you know full well what I’m on about. Yes we know the Carroll deal was a good one in retrospect but the fact is he was sold without the manager having any say. As for clutching at straws when I mention ‘ that ‘ court case , well you would say that as it doesn’t fit your remit that Ashley is our saviour. He’s a liar that’s fact , and he’s probably still lying his head off over all kinds of **** now that we’re unaware of.

      (Quote)

  37. Haidara also gets a lot of blocks on crosses comeing in from his side on what ive seen of him when he plays

      (Quote)

  38. aye, you could be right there mate. I like Bigi, just not sure if he’ll get a game if we continue the way we are, we’re likely to buy IF Cabaye leave.

Not too sure on Sammy, hope he makes it obviously

      (Quote)

  39. I don’t understand why Sammy & Bigi are not loaned out. I would say they are our best prospects and i guess its because they are close to the first team but we should be getting them out with a recall clause. They are not learning anything sitting on the bench/under 21’s

Loans don’t work for everyone but look at Dummett. Who here thought he would be (one of) the best of the youngsters coming through. I am sure there are plenty of teams that would love to take Sammy or Bigi for a few months.

      (Quote)

  40. Anyone else think Tiote’s suspension has come at the perfect time?

Better he misses the home game v Stoke than the home game v Arsenal imo.

Also, it presents Pardew with a fantastic opportunity to reward Ben Arfa for his recent form and play him in his favoured no.10 role. Cabaye can drop back and play alongside Anita and between the three of them we should be able to dominate the central area.

…I just hope that’s what Pardew does and doesn’t instead opt to play 4-4-2 with Ameobi up top. Defending long balls is Stoke’s bread and butter.

      (Quote)

  41. yeah i would agree with that Santii,if we not playing them ourselves get them out to some1 that can give them the games they need to improve.

<<<<<< sees taylor still been linked with QPR, dint mind selling him meself if we ganna be bring in some1 better, but dont think 2 millions enough meself

      (Quote)

  42. The Kid – I was thinking the same about Toto.
I’m sure Anita and Cabaye can handle the midfield.
Cant see shola getting a start either, as Pardew is enjoying this possession thing.
I can actually see Cisse getting a game tho.
Debs supplying all them crosses into the box, should be just what he needs to break his duck. 😛

  43. Mark – it is not good to look so far ahead and predict such a haul of points. 😉
Take a leaf out of Pardews book. Look no further ahead than the next match. That is all the Lads are focused on. How to beat stoke
Its quite refreshing that it is they who are keeping our feet firmly on the ground for a change.
Looks like we are having a very good season. 😛

I’d take 7 points from our next four games, mate. If we get that I think we will still be in 6th by the end of it.

    BB

I hope you’re right about Pardew liking the whole possession thing. This leaves him with one option and that is HBA in the no.10 role ahead of Anita and Cabaye. I really think we can do Stoke some serious damage if we play those three in the middle.

      (Quote)

  45. I wonder if Saylor could be used in a deal for Remy?
Saylor and £5m for Remy or something like that – would clear a canny chunk of wages to cover Remys as well.

We’d still have enough CB cover til the summer I think.

      (Quote)

  46. Sharpy – might have a job convincing Taylor with that deal tho.
Don’t think he would be too keen

      (Quote)

  47. BB – don’t give him a choice!. Force him out like they did with Carroll … Oops, did I just kick a hornets nest 😆
I think Saylor probably knows that he’s 4th choice CB now though, because of other players form and injuries he’s suffered. He may want the move if he’s gonna get to play – he may even be first choice there.

      (Quote)

  48. @Sharpy

If Remy wants to stay, Taylor the other way is an option.

All hinges on who comes in for Remy tho. Id break the bank and offer him 110k per week

      (Quote)

  49. Big Dave

I actually think we have a much better chance of keeping Remy than the club is letting on. I imagine our loan deal with QPR includes some kind of 1st refusal clause and Remy has already integrated into our squad.

I also think the teams that could attract him will be looking at better players than him (kind of why i’m hoping his barren spell goes on a bit longer).

I think most competition for Remy comes in the form of Everton. However, if they don’t make Champions League, which I very much doubt they will, then we can offer him the better wages/fans/stadium etc.

      (Quote)

  50. The kid I would love to keep Remy as I think he fits in well with our squad , but I just dont think we have any buy clause in the contract and apart from that I dontthink we would be willing to pay the wage he wants on a fulltime basis but i hope im wrong

      (Quote)

  51. Bit of a controversial question, but when we play Sunderland next year we could be the side to put the final nail in their coffin. Would anyone else want to be the team that sends them down, or would you rather they stopped up so we can have the derbies next year?

    😕

      (Quote)

  52. Dave – I didn’t think Suarez would commit to Liverpool for another 4yrs mate. I don’t know, but Remy is playing regular football, is playing well and is already loved by the Geordie faithful and that is important I reckon. He could look at Suarez or he could look at someone like Ba, I suppose it all depends on his advisors and what drives the lad really.

As for stopping til he gets a better offer, isn’t that the case with every footballer at every club?. 😆

      (Quote)

  53. Sharpy yeah in general that is the case for them all but some more than others , but as I said I dont think we will want to match his wages on a fulltime basis .
The kid its a hard one I love the derbies until the day of the games then I get nervous and wish we didnt have to play them as losing causes so much pain but then winning brings us so much joy . So over all I dont think that answers the question 😆
