No New Year cheer for United! West Brom 1-0 Newcastle

Berahino gives Baggies the win
Berahino gives Baggies the win
Newcastle failed to record a firs win of 2014 at the the first attempt after losing to West Bromwich Albion yesterday afternoon.

Saido Berahino scored the decisive penalty a few minutes before full-time after Matej Vydra was brought down by Tim Krul, but the reality is that the performance just wasn’t good enough.

Neither side created much in front of goal although West Brom did have the better of the limited chances on offer in what was in all reality a tame affair. The result is undoubtedly a blow for United, but perhaps the more concerning news is the red card awarded to Mathieu Debuchy which will incur a three game ban, and the news that Fabricio Coloccini will be out for four to six weeks with a knee injury.

I can’t comment too much on the match as I’ve only seen the limited highlights on offer and I had the joys of a 13 hour shift at work yesterday so missed it all in real time, but from what I’m gathering the performance just wasn’t there.

I said in the article which covered the match that no game is easy and that you must perform in every game if you want to do well in the Premier League. United still have an heir of inconsistency about them and it would appear that our purple patch is over.

We’ve now got two home games coming up starting with the visit of Cardiff in the FA Cup on Saturday followed by a league game against Manchester City before away trips at West Ham and Norwich bring January to a close. How many points would you fancy from those?

If anything these last two games have confirmed to me what I kind of always thought – that we are a top-half team and nothing else. With a bit of wind behind us we could finish a bit higher like we’ve done before, and when faced with issues we could finish lower like we’ve done before. From this though we just have to move on.

Howay the lads!

  1. Absolutely furious at Pardew for that defeat. Debuchy cost us any chance of a victory, but Pardew’s tactics cost us a point.

Why on earth did we continue with a high line against a side width no real aerial threat and no striker that likes to play with his back to our goal? We should have dropped deeper and had West Brom play everything in front of us. They could have played another 30mins and wouldn’t have broke us down if we had done that.

That was Pardew’s first mistake, but the most criminal thing was the fact he didn’t change tactics despite us receiving several warnings. Berahino came on and broke our “offside trap” two or three times before Vydra did the same and won the penalty. Why the f**k didn’t Pardew address the problem?

He’s let us down this week. Nothing to do with tiredness.

  2. Why do we always get games whereby a new manager officially take charge of our opponent(Cardiff)….

Hopefully the new manager effect doesn’t cause us yet another chance of going further in FA CUP…

Or else, a string of losses is impending. 🙄 🙄

  3. The kid – if Pardew is sacked maybe you could run for manager/head coach – with that attitude towards the cups you’d get on great with Mike 😆

  4. I can see this season ending in a damp squib. Come April, May time those heading for Brazil will find reasons to miss games, wont go into 50/50 challenges. Accumulate as many points as we can before the end of March and settle for mid table mediocrity. A wonderful thought isn’t it

Mike Ashley would spend £100m on a player if there was a good enough business case for it.

I’m not joking. If he spent £100m on one player & that there was a 90%+ chance that the player could bring £150m into the club, mike ashley would do it. Who wouldn’t??

From his point of view, he’s not just going to throw money at a transfer just because the fans or pardew think another player is needed. He wants evidence that it’s worth his investment & that the manager isn’t just playing football manager with his money.

The list of managers i’ve said might not have managed in the premier league but that does not mean they are not better than pardew.

Guardiola hasn’t managed in the premier league either. If he wanted to come to newcastle you wouldn’t come on here saying ‘nah, we’re better off sticking with pardew’ would you?

My point is that there are better foreign managers than pardew. It’s the same as wanting tom ince. Is ince really better than his foreign counterpart? I doubt it.

Why should we look to foreign players & managers? Because for too long english football has been stuck in the dark ages.

There is a very good reason why england have not won a major competition in 50 years.

Pardew is still here because derek llambias gave him a stupid contract & some fans wanted mike ashley to give pardew another season.

There is no doubt that he would have lost his job if ben arfa didn’t score the winners in the 2 games at the start of the season.

The odd thing is that there are alot of pardew fanboys on here. Somehow pardew has become unsackable. It doesn’t matter if we barely avoid relegation, we’ll blame mike ashley because he’s the devil.

  10. Wow.
    😐 😡 🙁 👿 😥
Are you lot available for weddings and bahmitzvahs?

I do agree with a lot of the criticism of Pards over yesterday – not adapting during the game, not rotating and all that. Buckstop and all that. But it’s just one game. He got it wrong, just like every manager does several times a year. “The Special One” has screwed up more than got it right this term, but I’m pretty sure you’d all have your tongues up his **** if he walked through the door.

All this ***** about replacing Pardew because he’s not good enough is just bigotry; you’d just replace him with another manager who is at least as fallible and far more of a risk. But at least he’d not sound southern, eh. And at least the dodgy bits on the new guy’s CV would be with overseas clubs so we can ignore them easily.

While I’m ranting, here’s the biggest claptrap of all: “We are the last big club in the premier league with a not very good manager.”

Since when? A wee home truth: our average finishing position since the Premier League started is 10th.

    TENTH.

We had two brief dalliances at the top end, one under KK and the other under SBR. and both paid for by going into massive debt. Without those two periods of relative brilliance we’d have an average on a par with West Brom and Villa.

So here we are, with the club making money, on a points total we’ve not seen at this point of the season since the SBR days – and people are calling for the manager’s head.

    Bloody unbelievable.

    Oooh, that feels better.

  12. KK – you really aren’t joking are you?! 😯 There is no way on earth that Ashley would ever spend £100m on any player!. I don’t imagine him ever spending £100m on 10 players!!.
The policy is the right player at the right price – that means buy cheap sell high. A £100m player would not sign for 80k pw or less – it would never happen and I can’t understand why you would even suggest that?!.

As for Pep – who knows?. It must be far easier to manage when you have the Barca or Bayern squad available to you. Could he do a better job than Pardew – more than likely. But could he win titles and trophies with this squad – I don’t think so.

Ask Spurs if foreign managers are better. Redknapp to AVB didn’t work out very well did it?, did they go for another foreigner? – Tim Sherwood, unbeaten so far with the same group of players.

Cabrella is a better player than Ince in my opinion. But Cabrella is £14m and Ince is £4m (ish, according to reports) – so which is most value for money?. Also we have to have English players in the squad and Ince is a young talented English player.

“There is a very good reason why england have not won a major competition in 50 years”.

Yeah – because we are too quick to look abroad IMO. We should be looking to develop English players and managers.

Finally – if your list of foreign managers are so good – why aren’t any of them at Sunderland, WBA, Cardiff, Crystal Palace or any of the other clubs that changed their managers in the summer?.

You don’t half muddy the waters fella.

You’ve just dismissed all the top 7 finishes we’ve had since we got in
    The premier.

Under KK, Dalglish & SBR we finished 2nd more than once, 3rd more than once, 3rd more than once, 4th 5th 6th & 7th on numerous occasions.

Almost half our finishes have been in the top 7.

We’ve qualified the CL & Europa.

The finishes have been in the bottom half but the achievements of those top 7 finishes should not be written off as just an average 10th.

      (Quote)

  14. The Kid – Heitinga isn’t for me either. Not sure how much Everton want for him but at 30 he wouldn’t be one for the future. With Colo and Wilo also 30 plus I’d sooner see us go after an early to mid twenties player personally.

At the right price I think Gomis could do a job, and would certainly be ahead of Shola and Cisse for me at the minute.

      (Quote)

  15. Troy: but that’s what an average is. 😆

The whole point is to make people consider both. We get the ‘deluded fans’ phrase aimed at us a lot, and it’s because too many only remember those good results, and happily ignore the others and the fact that we’ve won nowt. That leads to unrealistic expectations, which leads to daft calls for managers’ heads as soon as they make a mistake.

The average is the average. And NUFC, in the Premier League era, are a mid-table club. If we’re doing better than that, surely we can accept we’re still going to slip up now and again?

And yes, I still believe that had Debs not screwed up we’d probably have won yesterday.

      (Quote)

  16. BB&KK. You have both posted what I was wondering yesterday re- Debuchy’s rash tackle, it does make you wonder doesn’t it. Can’t understand why he went in two footed like that , it was a proper brainfart, likewise Krul’s action and he’s a lucky boy ,I thought he was off for sure like. As for the game, most pundits seem to think the Baggies were the better side yesterday and I can’t argue that we were better, we wern’t . I was really hacked off when I saw Shola picked ahead of Cisse who I think would of fed off Debs crosses better than Shola but every one was saying it’s Sholas hold up play which got him picked. Well the truth is Shola has roughly two decent games a season and he has had them now and should be left on bench now. Lets get Cisse starting again and see if he can regain some form ,moreover he’ll see that the manager has faith in him again. Thought we were pants in the final third yesterday ,very poor and West Brom wern’t much better but us going down to ten made it easy for them in the end.

    2) – Manchester City have a ridiculous squad
    3) – Arsenal spent £40m on a world class player and have a very good squad
    4) – Liverpool have Suarez
    5) – Manchester United are the biggest club in the world
    6) – Spurs spent a hatful and have a very strong squad

why would we expect to get into the Champions league ahead of any of these teams? quite frankly its a near impossible job and with the amount we have spent we have done well to be top 8!

    Lets hope anyway.

I think the jan transfer window should be shorter say 2 weeks. It always seems to roll on and noone makes any moves until the last few days. Its a headache and a general pain in the ***.

The only reason I love it at the moment is because last year we signed 5 players in five days!

Can anyone clarify….I believe Remy cannot be bought by another club in our loan period nor can he be recalled? Anyone know?

I think it was two seasons ago after the summer window when someone worked out that we’d been linked with 153 players and not one of them ended up at the club.

I do wonder if we should just loan in a decent striker to cover us until either Campbell or Armstrong – or both – come through. Right now I’d be happy if we get another striker in regardless of the shape of the contract.

  26. As we all saw yesterday we’re crying out for another attacker/striker. Shola’s never been it, Remy’s not quite as good as we thought and Cisse’s a lost cause. Pardew simply won’t try HBA up front. Gouffran’s ran himself into the ground and has been really poor for the last three games. No goals no points.

I worry about Cabaye too. Little short legs just can’t get up and down enough and he’s always trying the 30-40 yard pass, effectively playing himself out of the attack. I’m not saying drop him but I’d play him deep and we always look a better team with Anita in there. Disappointing yesterday but it had been coming and I’m not dispirited with 6 points from 12 over the period. We’ve been on a remarkably good run but to get anywhere near top 4 it has to be sustained over a long time. We’re not there yet.

Believe nowt till hes in the shirt.

      (Quote)

  30. Kim, that’s probably sensible. I should do the same. But I know I won’t. Pathetic, really. 🙄

On the up-side, good to see Cambell’s done well enough to earn an extension to his loan (and rave reviews from his manager) and that Armstrong continues to rip through opposition defences – albeit very young ones. Some real talent there, if we can just nurture it properly.

Who else do people think may come good from our development squad?

I’ll give the fat bastad credit for that at least.
Oh and Troy NO I don’t want to see Pardew fail. Quite the opposite.
I want him to get it right. And I praise him when he does. But sometimes his actions take some understanding.
I said all along that the Arsenal game wasn’t important to us, in the grand scheme of things. It was far more important to have a fit and healthy team for the west brom match, so we could get 3 points from them.
Pardews ego took over and his desire to prove we could play as well as the top teams, resulted in us losing to arsenal and losing to WBA.
We now have tired, injured and suspended players, for up coming matches. All needless imho.
Hence I call Pardew for the clown he is.
Senseless dumb actions of a clueless idiot.
Yes he has done well to get us to where we are and the points tally we have, but then he blows it with a mega brainfart like this.
I’m sure Ashley is well happy tho, now that the threat of Europa footy has been removed 😉
8th place finish would be just about perfect for the fat controller. Who cares what the fans want ❓

  36. Liam…Last time I checked(which was yonks ago so it may have changed) a player can only be recalled from a season long loan in the event of a permanent transfer being agreed between the parent club and the buying club, however I don’t know if that would still apply when a “loan fee” has been paid as in our case with Remy, I’d “guess” in that scenario he couldn’t be recalled…hopefully 😕

How bad or boring will the football have to get before you realise Pardew is not going to take this club to the next level.

‘While I’m ranting, here’s the biggest claptrap of all: “We are the last big club in the premier league with a not very good manager.”’

Why do you not think we are a big premier league club?

We have the 7th/8th most expensive squad in the league.

We’re the 20th most valuable club in the world.

We have the 10th highest average attendances in europe.

We’ve spent more than a quarter of our time in the league in the top 4. Only Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea & Liverpool have done better than us.

We’re 6th in the all time Premier League, ahead of Everton, Tottenham, Man City.

Still, i guess in some people’s eyes we’re just a wee club in the North-East, right?

It was disappointing and Sholas inclusion a total waste of time, Debuchy was daft and Krul would have been better letting Vydra go round him. He was running wide on his weaker foot and defenders were getting back on the line but hey ho, ifs and buts.

The cup might have come at a good time, Give Cisse, Ben Arfa, Marveaux (remember him) and Saylor a full 90 to get up to speed again. Then hopefully our Director of fuckall will finally show us what hes being paid for and sign a couple of players who can make an impact and keep the season alive…

I’m not sure why that’s difficult to understand?

£1m, £10m or £100m, it’s all the same to Mike Ashley. He’ll pay whatever is necessary as long as it’s worth it.

If that means signing a £25m player that will almost guarantee us Champions League football, he’ll do it.

We buy low and sell high in theory although really only Carroll has been a huge profit so far. We’re a decent team with a thin squad and with Debuchy and Colo out it doesn’t bode well for the next few games. I don’t know what Pep could do with this squad but i would guess that he would do a better job than Pardew. Therefore, there are better foreign managers than Pardew.

Are there any better foreign managers that would come here? I’ve given a list of realistic alternatives. I’m not sure why we should all be grateful that Pardew is here managing us. It’s really not like he is the best we could get.

AVB points per game = 1.9 (72pts over a season)
Redknapp points per game = 1.73 (66pts over a season)

Ince’s dad thinks Tom Ince is better than £15m Zaha & is worth £25m so i’m not sure where the £4m figure comes from. £8m from Cardiff is the offer that was accepted so that’s a bit more realistic.

‘Yeah – because we are too quick to look abroad IMO. We should be looking to develop English players and managers.’ – nobody was looking abroad in the 70’s & 80’s.

English players & managers are given more time & opportunities than their foreign counterparts but they still lag behind. All clubs would love to have home grown players & managers – it would be cheaper than transferring players in.

The truth is that it’s a national problem & that they’re just not good enough.

‘Finally – if your list of foreign managers are so good – why aren’t any of them at Sunderland, WBA, Cardiff, Crystal Palace or any of the other clubs that changed their managers in the summer?.’

I would say we’re a bigger club than all of those clubs & i only gave a list of managers who would come here. I don’t really expect to see Fatih Terim excited to be at Crystal Palace TBH.

    Anyway:
Sunderland – Gus Poyet = Foreign

    WBA – still looking

    Cardiff – Solskjær = Foreign

Crystal Palace – Tony Pulis = First season in the Premier League so they went woth someone that knows the league.

I read a good article a few weeks ago on why we should have known Fergie was retiring the moment he signed van Persie. Would he signed an injury-prone 29 year old player if retirement wasn’t on the agenda at the end of the season?
He signed van Persie as he wanted to end on a high and new that RVP would give them the short-term goal power required.

  58. Yes being tonked isn’t going to help us in any way. But look out with Man City coming in. We may just get that tonking even without Aguero. We look fairly thin at the back now for at least the next 3 games. Is it Saylor to the rescue then or Mbiwa?

  59. Sounds absolutely spot on ST mate @148. It makes sense but it makes his replacement look hopeless. Moyes is probably cursing under his breath. Nowadays it isn’t easy to find brilliant replacements because Man City have already cleaned out a big part of the market and PSG, Real Madrid, Barca etc etc are in there with big money as well.
