Are we about to see incoming transfers at NUFC?

Luuk who is back...
Luuk who is back…
Earlier this evening some rather interesting news emerged from Newcastle United.

Quieter than expected but just in case you weren’t aware, the January transfer window is open which means clubs can do business once more.

Now generally the mention of transfer windows sends me to sleep. As a United fan I’ve kind of starting wondering who we’ll see leave rather than who we’ll see arrive with last January proving to be an exception in terms of activity rather than the norm.

However sources at Sky Sports News “understand” that Mike Ashley has sanctioned the arrival of up to four players in this window with no pressure to sell any current players to finance these deals.

Details are sketchy but one rumoured deal is supposed to regard the arrival of Luuk de Jong on an initial loan deal with a view to making the switch permanent in the summer.

It was well documented that we were in for the Holland striker previously but the former FC Twente front man opted to join Borussia Monchengladbach instead where he has since struggled to settle.

Another name mentioned has been that of Remy Cabella of Montpellier. The versatile attacker can play on either wing or as an attacking midfielder although a price tag in the region of €14 million would seem to me to be too steep for us.

If we do strengthen then great. It’s what we all want but at the moment there is nothing concrete in any of this and actions ultimately speak louder than words.

There are still obstacles however if this does turn out to be true. One of those obstacles is Joe Kinnear who might actually have to do some of the work he is paid to do and get players “over the line” to coin a popular phrase in these parts.

Of course its just as likely all rubbish and we’ll end up with nobody. Putting my tinfoil hat for a moment, how about the club leaking a bit of positive news like this following on from some defeats and a cup exit?

Cynical? Me? I never used to be…

  1. Toonsy, as if the club would do that 😯 😉

As always I expect nowt but hope for loads 😛 and believe nowt until they’re holding up the shirt.

If I were a cynic I would say its a bit dodgy that 2 of the players most linked with a move in the past(Krul and Cabaye) are injured, mmm…good job I’m not a cynic though. 😉 😆

  2. That Remy Cabella dude is way over priced at 14 million hes worth about half of that figure 😯

  3. Anyway off to bed. Terrible chest pains. Must be the healthy eating kick. I’ve not started it yet but just the thought of it is making me feel weird 😆

  4. Not many people have picked up on the tactical genius of Pardz 😯
he has astutely lost a couple of games just before the transfer window gets into full swing and now we are looking to sign up to 4 players. The man needs to be commended for such a bold and brave move! 😉

  5. Really TOONARMYELITE?
You don’t think Remy Cabella is worth £11.6million in the current market…
I don’t think you know a lot about football tbh.. I’m gonna go ahead and guess that apart from a couple youtube compilations, you’ve probably never even seen him play!!
For the sake of argument though, I shall humour you AND say you don’t think he is 1/8th of the player Gareth Bale is!?
In case I am right though, I shall educate you.. He is basically a younger, more skilful and faster Cabaye. Yohan is probably a better passer of the ball with slightly better delivery but Cabella is just (if not, more) creative.
Considering Cabaye is worth about €20million at 27, I would say you are WRONG, SO SO WRONG. Go educate yourself before you write some non sensical trash on here again. Regards

  6. only a sucker would pay 14 million for him and no1 will match there value you watch mr know it all ALB_CHEZ

      (Quote)

  7. @ ALB_CHEZ

so how dos a player lose 86 million off his value in 3 months, its cause he wont worth that in the 1st place, and he aint worth 14 million nether

  8. Cabella is having a good season, even his chairman has said as much.

Hes scored 5 goals this season & 2 assists in 8 starts. Only scored 7 in 38 last season, and 2 the season before. he’s still only 23 though.

I would say 11.6mil is a decent price for a young developing player. He’s certainly no Cabaye but has the potential to be as good, time will tell.

I reckon the days of the Toon snapping up Cabayes for 5 mil are difficult with other teams looking @the same market as us..

He can’t be too bad if Man U and Arsenal have been sniffing around him.

      (Quote)

  9. Never heard of Remy Cabella. But I’d never heard of Tiote either, so not going to guess how good he is.

Definitely sounds like the type of player we need though.

  10. Got to agree with the train of thought by some on the convenient injuries to Cabs and Krul 🙄 .

As for players coming in ,I am trying hard not to scour rumour sites ,twitter and SSN for titbits since most windows it proves to be a futile exercise. As with all things Toon I expect the unexpected now. 😉

  11. Toonsy I reckon purchases we make now will be offset by sales in the summer (rather than the usual other way round).
Reasons being that we have half of France on our books and they will likely have an inflated value after the WC.
Would be surprised of we don’t get rid of some of the deadwood this window though. Striker aside we have a pretty big squad. .
Number of summer sales will probably depend on whether or not Europe is made.

      (Quote)

  12. who knows how much more they will knock off if we wait another 3 months might be closer to what hes really worth 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  13. lets just say if they think fatboys ganna get 14 million out of his wallet for him,,then i would not be holding me breath if i was them 😆

  14. @ MARK
<<<<<<<<<<< cant see caybeye leaving this window meself, unless it was a huge offer, but if his injury reports are true, i dont think he would pass a medical anyway.

even then Remy Cabella just aint worth 14 million

      (Quote)

  15. whether he goes now or later, this lads transfer’s already paid for.

I reckon Ashley is thinking a-head 😯 , knowing buys now will keep us in the hunt in the league but at the same time we have players to sell at the right time..

(given we do actually sign anyone lol)

      (Quote)

  16. The only thing i like about fatboy is unlike our owners in the past he wont pay over inflated prices for players, and wont be muged off unlike some of our prevous owners

      (Quote)

  17. Toonsy…You’re getting the chest pains for the same reasons as me then 😉 😆

    Aussie 😆

TBH I don’t think we’ll see any big names leaving this window, maybe some fringe players like Obertan, Gosling, Marveaux etc…hopefully.

On Cabella I’ve only seen him a 2 or 3 times so can’t say whether if he’s worth the cash or not but if he plays consistently like he did in those games than he’d be well worth it imo…but then it’s not my money so Fatman may disagree 😉

      (Quote)

  18. i wouldnt trust jabba to the end of owr street hes got a good partner in joe another fly by night imo they have taken the buzz out of the toon just my feelings on it others might like the way they work got to give them top marks as con men like 🙁

      (Quote)

  19. @ RICHIETOON
obertan was riping up trees in that league come over to the prem and look what happened to him 😆

      (Quote)

  20. just cause he looks the bee knees in that league thats played at walking pace dint mean hes ganna cut it in the prem

      (Quote)

  21. I’d be happy with 4 in and 4 out let alone just 4 in.

Staylor (might have to wait til summer now) Shola, Obertan and Jonas/Marv

    for

Hold up striker, creative dedicated attacking midfielder, winger with crossing ability and a youngish CB, would be handy if they could cover lb because it seems like all our LBs and Anita/Mbiwa are more comfortable on the left…

We’d have to spend more money than we would receive in transfer fees, but with Staylor/Jonas/Marv wages of about 150k it’s not really putting us at long term risk. Get those players in and we can have a real pop at Europe league place. Won’t happen though.

      (Quote)

  22. If Ashley does want to folk out €14m on this kid then let him crack on.
This is the type of player we need IMO. A midfielder who will create chances for our forwards and chip in with goals himself.
This lad actually plays higher up the pitch that Cabaye.

Ashley is willing to sanction up to 4 transfers in. Well that could be:

    Luuk De Jong – loan
    Cabella – €14m
    Gomis – €2-3m
    Dekoke – compensation payment

So an outlay of around £15m on 4 players isn’t unrealistic under Ashley I reckon.

I also read that Norwich may be interested in Jonas.
I wonder if we could offer Marv as part of the Cabella deal.

      (Quote)

  23. well I’m not going to get excited.

We’ve heard it all before. Potentially 4 players in? I’m sure we said that in the summer too

      (Quote)

  24. TAE…Obertan didn’t rip up any trees in that league and the French League is a lot stronger now that it was then imo …but if you want to use that sort of comparison then Cabaye looked ok in that league and ok in ours so your comparison isn’t really valid.
Altidore did rip up plenty trees in the Dutch league but I’d said he’d do nowt over here because I’d watched him a few times in the Dutch league and despite his stats he just didn’t look a good player and imo not good enough for the Premier league, but I give my opinion on players that I’ve actually seen play in games are you? I’m not saying whether I’m right or wrong it’s just my opinion 😉

      (Quote)

  25. Sharpy-yep very similar thoughts to yourself mate.

Still not entirely convinced by De Jong or Gomis really, but then we’ve limited ourselves so much by sticking Carr in France and telling him not to move, we’ve just got Gomis and then De Jong who was a failed target from yonks ago.

They don’t just do fairies in S. America, some strong players down there as well that would no doubt suit!

      (Quote)

  26. Obertan and Marvs could still go out and would prob get us 4 – 5 million if we’re lucky – I doubt we would pay €14m for Cabella, way above our price range for somebody who is not a guaranteed first team player

Day 6 of the January drinking sabbatical …. getting grumpier by the minute

      (Quote)

  27. <<<<<<<< has a theory all our players bought in a year will all be brought in jan so if 4 players come in bonus, but will expect us to sign no1 in the summer

      (Quote)

  28. , Montpellier president Laurent Nicollin has said there is no offer from the toon agents have been in touch but not from toon 😕

      (Quote)

  29. I always love the conspiracy theories popping up around windows, Remember how Carroll wasnt really injured when we sold him 😆 🙄

The only players i see leaving in this window are Marveaux who Ashley will want off the wage bill, Obertan who does absolutely nothing that Sammy cant do with a geordie accent and a home grown quota token and Gosling who will probably sign for blackpool for a small fee now instead of leaving for nowt in the summer.

Theres great value in this window: Capel for £6m, Gomis for £3m, De Jong whos available on loan apprantly and Mancienne from hamburg for a nominal fee, Versatile defender like Perch with better technique. Those four for about £12m would strengthan us in all areas and help us kick on like Cisses arrival two years back…

      (Quote)

  30. From what I remember Obertan didn’t do owt in the league, it was his performance for the French U21s against the English that caught everyone’s eye.

Silly really because those matches are dangerous to gauge players on…how many Englishmen have looked good only to slot in nicely at the championship.

Richie-you were right on altidore mate, the dutch league is a strange one for making strikers look a lot better than they are a lot of the time. Certainly didn’t see Suarez becoming as good as he is now though. Liverpool have done great business on him.

      (Quote)

  31. CC…My injures comment was very much tongue in cheek, hence why I said I couldn’t see any big names leaving this window 😉
Ref Carroll I’d be more suspicious if someone told me he was fit 😆

      (Quote)

  32. CC-The Carroll one was the best one, he was sent to “recuperate” in Dubai and was actually on a mission from Ashley in order to sell the club to some oil princes 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  33. <<<<<<<<<< has a buddy over there thats seen a fair bit of him seen him twice meself,he knows his footie and when i asked him a price value he rated him between 5 and 7 million, was unimpressed meself with what i saw and i also looked at his u tube video

      (Quote)

  34. Cabella looks like the love child of HBAs father and Cabayes mother. Spooky how he plays like a hybrid of both (whilst being no better than either of them)

its a bit stupid that we’ve been monitoring him – we missed out on a much better player in his ex team mate Younes Belhanda in the summer. He went to fkin Russia!!

    quick off the mark again

      (Quote)

  35. Newkie…Aye, you can’t guarantee any player being able to perform in another league, any signing is a gamble even a player staying in the same league can fail at a different club but that’s football.

      (Quote)

  36. TAE…FAir enough, as I’ve said just my opinion. We’ll find out how good he is when he signs for Man Utd 😆

      (Quote)

  37. CC – I don’t know how he’s got on in Germany, but Mancienne didn’t look much cop when he was playing in the PL before going to Hamburg. I know he was just a young lad at the like but not overly convinced.
He could cover CB or RB from what I remember of him.

      (Quote)

  38. @ RICHIETOON
more chance of me becomeing the pope 😯 than him signing for man utd imho 😆

      (Quote)

  39. Rich

Aye it wasnt really aimed at you or anyone in particular. Just they started popping up again as soon as Colo got injured and went through the roof with Cabaye and Krul knacking themselves.

      (Quote)

  40. TAE… I don’t know, they signed the aforementioned Obertan and they weren’t as desperate then as they are now 😆

CC…I think it’s been Tiote too several times with his nailed on move to Chelsea 😉

While we’re plucking names out of thin air(which I generally hate doing but I’m bored) a player I mentioned a couple of times last year is Grenier at O Lyon has always looked a good player when I’ve seen him, probably would have better options than us though if they ever sell him.

      (Quote)

  41. @ RICHIETOON
they might be in the market for a midfielder but if they do buy 1 i think it will be a proper defensive midfielder

      (Quote)

  42. Look at all you guys trying to save Jabbas money.. “ohhh, hes not worth it” “ohh, he won’t make it, dont spend that much” 😯
you all sound like you are on Jabbas payroll 😕

      (Quote)

  43. CC – I wouldn’t be against it mate. I agree we need English players and there is always benefit to having such a versatile player within the squad/on the bench.

I just hope they focus on the priorities of the 1st team. I’m all for improving the squad and bringing young uns like Dekoke into the squad. But if that leaves us with Shola and Cisse up front then it’ll have been a **** window IMO.

I’d love for us to get the players in early. Then get rid of some, then spend time looking to loan out another 2 or 3 as well – I’m thinking Bigi, Sammi and either Good or Dummett again.

      (Quote)

  44. Toonsy@10 puts it perfectly:

‘A player is worth what someone is willing to pay…’

Ashley will only buy players that are underpriced & will make a worthwhile contribution to the team.

If suarez was offered to us for £30m, ashley would have no problem paying.

If lampard was offered to us for £1m, ashley would say no deal.

      (Quote)

  45. Is cabella underpriced at £10m?

Is he better (or will become better) than what we already have.

If the answer is no to both of the above, he isn’t coming.

      (Quote)

  46. @ AUSSIE MAGPIE FAN
not fatboys money its the clubs money 😯 loves the way you splashing the clubs cash about over there 😯 ,if he was worth 14 million id say snatch there hand off 😆

      (Quote)

  47. Also, if we are (unlikely) willing to offer 14million for him then why wouldn’t be just offer a little more for Lallana. Sure 18mill would get him.

Don’t believe we’ll pay that much for a relatively unknown player.

      (Quote)

  48. I see Cabella’s wiki has changed

    Manchester United[edit]
On the 6th January 2014, Montepellier agreed a £10 million fee for Cabella’s services. He signed a 5 year deal on the same day.

    😆

JJ-I would rather take De Jong.

  49. I see West Ham’s owners have given the dreaded “backing” to their manager. I bet West Ham fans aren’t singing his praises anymore now are they, silly buggers, but typical I suppose.

It could just be another case of edward norton in primal fear…

  51. @lee_ryder: Reports in France suggesting that Evian are interested in taking Gabriel Obertan on loan #nufc

      (Quote)

  52. Newkie I bet West ham fans will be furious with the owner’s. Sam spent most of there transfer budget on Andy Carrole who’s been injured all season, just like Owen was for us. Sam is an experienced manager at premier league level but he has poor judgement on scouting. He did the same to us with Geremi, Smith, Cacapa etc. Then you have average players on high wages and can’t get rid of them. He play’s ugly hoofball like we did last season and I think they will go down this season.

      (Quote)

  53. I know there getting a new stadium off the government but the debts West Ham our mounting reminds me of us when we went down. They make Ashley look sensible with money.
