Cabaye’s Capital Gains! West Ham 1-3 Newcastle

Cabaye celebrates the opener
Newcastle returned to winning ways following a run of four defeats by deservedly beating West Ham at Upton Park yesterday.

Yohan Cabaye stole the show once more as he pulled the strings from midfield and bagged a goal either side of a strike by Loic Remy.

However an unfortunate own goal by Mike Williamson just before half-time gave the hosts a way back into the match which made things more nervy than West Ham deserved on the day. The victory was deserved and could have been by more goals with some more clinical finishing but a win is a win and that is just what the doctor ordered.

Newcastle took the lead 16 minutes into the match when Steven Taylor surged forward playing the ball down the left for Yoan Gouffran who passed in field to Yohan Cabaye who stroked the ball home after sidestepping West Ham defender Razvan Rat.

It should have been two soon after but for Gouffran’s effort being cleared off the line before Moussa Sissoko spurned another great chance to double the lead by firing tamely at Adrian after being played in by Cabaye.

A second goal did arrive just after the half-hour mark as Loic Remy applied the finish to a fine team move by controlling Moussa Sissoko’s right-wing cross with his chest before poking home.

At 2-0 we were cruising and fully deserved the lead but a goal just before half-time gave the hosts some hope as Mike Williamson bundled into his own net after Carlton Cole’s initial shot was saved by Krul.

Half-time: West Ham 1-2 Newcastle

As you might have expected, a goal just before the break gave the hosts a platform to build on as they launched the ball forward at every opportunity. And it would have paid off had Cole not fired a Matt Taylor cross wide from six yards before Andy Carroll, introduced just after the hour mark, skied Stewart Downing cross way over from eight yards.

But despite a bombardment of high balls into the box, the kind we painfully know Allardyce’s football can produce, United held firm and sealed the win deep into stoppage time. Hatem Ben Arfa was brought down on the edge of the West Ham box giving Yohan Cabaye the chance to line up a free-kick, which he did perfectly curling his effort up and over the wall and into the back of the net via the post.

Full-time: West Ham 1-3 Newcastle

That’s six away wins for the season already – last season we managed just two so we’re looking at a vast improvement in fortunes on the road. It’s also our fourth win on the spin in London where we always used to struggle.

Yes it could and probably should have been more comfortable but the home side were always going to give it a go in the second period after a dire first half. That is just how it goes, but we held firm and got the win we deserved.

Howay the lads!

  1. Think Remy is a poor man’s Henry. But still a very good player.

I don’t think Cisse is that far behind him though. Remy has the better first touch. Cisse has the better finishing ability.

  2. So Shearer still thinks Chelski will win the league. They don’t look anything special to me, compared to City and Arsenal. One of those will win it I think.

  4. Anyone seen that story about the Scums Fletcher in the Mirror today page 17 ?

He spat on the back of a rickshaw driver then posted a pic of the phlegm on the guys jacket with the message ” al spit on ya back ya c***.” 😯 He also filmed it on his mobile and posted it but has now removed it from his account.
Most of the pedicab drivers in London are foreign students, they do this job to pay their way through their studies.

They truly are Scum that lot.

  5. I did, but now I think Arsenal will conk out near the end and City will win for me. They are getting stronger and have the resources at their disposal. Over 100 goals already. 😯

maybe if all the rest of there games were at home but they aint and i think there away form will cost city the title

  7. DJG ,I can’t believe City will go the entire season the way they are ,at some point they will have a little dip surely 😕 .

      (Quote)

  8. I can’t believe Arsenal will go the whole season without a dip though, they are playing lovely football but they are not the invincibles squad. Depends if they add in January, I doubt City will not sort out the away form. They sorted it for their trip to us and even though we had the Tiote goal, they had at least 2 clear cut chances we were lucky not to concede and then the last goal. Arsenal scored one from a free kick, had hardly any shots on target and then hung on for their lives for last 15 minutes. ❗

sort there away form against us 😆 thought they were lucky to get away with a point never mind all 3 😆

  10. Plus in a horse race or title race, if it’s close for most of the way, what often happens is the one who was first runs out of steam towards the end and the one in second or third has some left in the tank. City have more in the tank than Arsenal, in my humble opinion but I could be wrong. 😛

  11. They beat us 2-0 and had about 2 cleared off the line. 😕 Hardly lucky to get a point, doubt we would have won just because of the goal we had chalked off. 😉

Where would Liverpool be without Suarez? Probably where they are now.

We’d be pretty much where we are now without remy.

Remy is not worldclass, we’re not a one man team & we have a perfectly good striker (Cisse) on the bench who could come in & do just as well.

What we really need is a Lukaku, Benteke type player to replace Shola. If we don’t sign Remy then a replacement for him too.

Remy is a good player but we’ll carry on just fine without him just as we did when Carrol left & when Ba left.

Alternatives to Remy? I don’t know any but i’m sure Graham Carr does.

I’ve never said we’ve got **** players. Quite the opposite. I think we have players that should be challenging for 4th especially as the league is the only thing we have left now.

I have said we’ve got a **** manager & i don’t think anybody actually disagrees with that point although he has almost got us challenging for a Europa League place.

I’m not sure why you think Sissoko is a better player on the right wing? He isn’t & it isn’t his preferred playing position.

However we don’t really have anybody to compete with him there (Obertan?), which is the reason why we need a winger.

I think Ben Arfa has done well this season especially considering the lack of playing time he’s had.

He’***** the wood work a few times, won a penalty & some free kicks, provided assists etc.

Absolutely right about tiote though. Some fans wanted to sell him for £5m or £6m just as they were willing for cabaye to be sold for £10m & just as they are happy for Cisse & Ben Arfa to be sold cheap.

  19. Mourinho said Liverpool have a big advantage because they don’t have to worry about the Champions League.

    He’s right.

Whoever gets knocked out of the CL earlier than everyone else will probably win the title (except for Man Utd).

  20. Chelsea don’t want Ba & they have Lukaku going there next season.

They will want to get rid of Ba & i think we’d have a big chance of getting him if we were interested in this window & especially in the summer.

I think Ba would be a better signing for the way we play than Remy just because we seem to prefer 1 centre forward leading the line.

  21. We’re heavily linked to De Jong and Cabella I see. So what is JFK doing? Well he’s been to Germany to book his tent at Oktoberfest, he’s been to France on a booze cruise and now he’s in rehab. No wonder Jabba appointed him. He’s perfect – he does nothing and spends no money so for Jabba it’s just spot on!

  26. All that separates the whole bottom half of the table after well over half the season is 5 points. I don’t think I’ve seen that before. Then there are three teams at the top who will not be caught. 6 points below them are Liverpool and Spurs, with Everton also challenging for 4th. I can’t see the teams from 7th to 10th breaking into that. We would need to go on an amazing run. Can you mastermind it Pardew? 😛 We could catch maybe one of Spurs, Everton and Man U but not all of them and I don’t think we’ll catch Liverpool whilst Suarez is there, but I don’t see Liverpool as title challengers. It’s going to be interesting to see who gets relegated though, it could be anyone of the bottom 9 teams in my opinion. I hope Stoke, West Ham and Cardiff go down personally.

Toonsy@93, Yeah but you wouldn’t be classless enough to spit on the guys back, post a pic and laugh about it on film would you. That little scrote earns £40k a week and feels the need to spit on the back of a guy who probably doesn’t even cover the cost of his cab out of his wages, he’s a **** of the highest order imo.

When Suarez was banned at the start of the season Liverpool were doing just as well as they are now. They are far from a one man team.

You should also look back on this blog to see what people thought of the players last season.

I don’t have any problem with the reason or manner in which Ba left. He went to a bigger club, with better players, facilities, money & a world class manager.

I think he’d have no problem coming back to us as he would most likely start more games than he has done so far at Chelsea.

    @staurt79
That’s £21m! That would be a very good price for him regardless of whether or not we get Cabella.

I doubt it’s true though because we aren’t desperate for Cabella & we already have enough strength in depth to cope without Cabaye…

      (Quote)

  29. STUART79
I have the sneaky suspicion that Cabella is pencilled in as a Cabaye replacement. I don’t think we would spend that sort of money for an addition without a sale. 🙁 I doubt he could replace Cabaye though. Kinnear has something up his sleeve apart from just a snotty handkerchief.

We don’t have a replacement for Cabaye at the club. If we do why aren’t PSG bidding 21 million for whoever it is.

Fulham and West Ham to date are the worst teams I have seen this season and would be two out of the three for me. Who joins them is hard to say. Can see it having a different perspective every week

  33. I would like it to be Stoke, because they are an awful long ball/ set piece team who don’t belong in the ‘best league in the world’. In the championship possibly but not in the prem, alos because of their manager and the game they had at SJP where their fans say the ref won us the game when really it was their own fault. It makes a mockery of the standard of the league when a team like that can bully their way to safety every season. Cardiff because I just don’t like them or their owner and don’t think they belong in the PL with Swansea (one Welsh team is enough) 🙂 West Ham because of the money they have spent and their new stadium which will be bigger than ours, and obviously because of Nolan, AC and Fat Sam, it would be funny if they go down. I’m not really bothered about Fulham but they don’t deserve to stay up. I would like Crystal Palace to stay up. I just like the fact that they are the only South London club as there are loads of North London clubs. Sunderland I don’t want to go down. Anyone who wants them to go down is a bit anti-football IMO. There would be no derby and one PL from the North East (unless you count Hull) I never want them to go down, just to be lower than us.

I suspect it depends on who has the toughest run-ins out of the bottom half as there’s not much in it. Could be an amazing last day if it stays like this. I can’t remember all the bottom teams being on similar points before, normally by now there is one team at the bottom where you think, ‘they’ve had it’.

Big fan bases, mainly manned by bell ends. Especially Forest. Arseholes.

Anita is just as good as Cabaye at most things & in my opinion a better team player.

Cabaye leaving also increases the chances that we’ll see more of Cisse, Ben Arfa or Marveuax because Pardew doesn’t know how to rotate his squad.

      (Quote)

  39. The Forest fans I’ve met have generally been alright, other than a little deluded that their stint in Europe with Clough makes them a bigger club than us. I think they were quite unlucky to go out of the Prem when it started up and have suffered pretty badly as a result. My only problem with them and Leicester coming up is that they actually have owners who will plough money in. Leeds thankfully are still pretty frugal and therefore are always welcome back to the top 😛

  41. Newkie, Yeah it’s all a bit tight and cosy down there isn’t it, glad we have a 17 point cushion . Think Cardiff are certs to drop and Norwich could well get sucked in especially if we beat them. Have a feeling the Scum will survive this season , Fulham could well go and as for west ham, well they need to ditch Sam and bring a couple in if they are to have any hope. Palace have looked far better lately so think they’ll be ok.

      (Quote)

  42. Newkie , Who do you see top 6 come may? ,I still think top 3 will be ****, City, Chelsea but who for 4th, 5th and 6th?, gonna be interesting, and have a sneaky feeling Manure won’t finish in the top 6 even, can see Liverpool ,spurs and us or Everton above them.

      (Quote)

  43. Kim-think you’re right about the Scum staying up. I think Fulham will go down, but there’s plenty to pick. Be interesting to see how WBA’s new manager does as well.

As for top 6 I still think City will win the league followed by Chelsea and then Arsenal (unless Arsenal buy a new striker now) Didn’t want Liverpool to grab a champions league spot but if Suarez is playing I think he can fire them there. Then I would say Spurs, Manu, Everton and us. I think if they get Rooney and Van Persie back they can salvage a bit of their season but not enough to get fourth. I can’t see us getting ahead of them without buying two quality players and I don’t think we will. Everton will run out of a bit of steam at the end I reckon allowing Manure to get ahead.

      (Quote)

  44. Newkie, Would love to see Manure out the top 6 like, not too fussed who ends up ahead of them tbh 😀

      (Quote)

  45. Kim-will be funny for sure, only thing that worries me is that they will always have the money to bring in big names-if they lost a CL spot to Spurs or Liverpool it will only boost those two ahead of us further. As much as I hated Manchester United it’s Liverpool/Spurs that we need to implode, not them.

      (Quote)

  46. Prem-we’ve done well against the top sides, usually we come out well against them after letting ourselves down against weaker sides. I was worried that after doing well but arguably being robbed against Man City we’d slump a little but we put that to bed thankfully.

  47. Anyone know if Cabaye is able to enforce the ‘Webster Rule’? If so I’d be tempted to sell for £20m+ now, rather than let him leave for £6m in the summer. He’s certain to leave in the summer at the latest, but I think he’d rather stay until after the World Cup for guaranteed game time reasons (and maybe his and his agents bank balance). He’s been a good servant (more often than not) and we can’t give him either Champions League games or wages in the foreseeable future. It was Kevin Keegan who said it is a 3 year roundabout nowadays. Whatever did happen to Enrique???

      (Quote)

  48. How well are Swansea doing at the moment! They strengthened their squad in the summer and they have a top manager in Laudrup! They have handled the Europa league stresses really well! 😯

  49. Ben Arfa seems like a bit of a loner. Both socially and in terms of his play on the field.

For me, he is the most sell-able player in our team. I’d happily accept anything around 8 million pounds for him.

Considering we arn’t paying Jonas’ wages, we’d have 8 million for Ben Arfa. Plus rid of his wages. Surely we’d have enough available for that classy attacking midfielder we are craving.

Thing is, if Ben Arfa goes, then Cabella has to offer more. Not in individual skill but in what he can offer to the starting eleven.
