Cabaye’s Capital Gains! West Ham 1-3 Newcastle

Cabaye celebrates the opener
Cabaye celebrates the opener
Newcastle returned to winning ways following a run of four defeats by deservedly beating West Ham at Upton Park yesterday.

Yohan Cabaye stole the show once more as he pulled the strings from midfield and bagged a goal either side of a strike by Loic Remy.

However an unfortunate own goal by Mike Williamson just before half-time gave the hosts a way back into the match which made things more nervy than West Ham deserved on the day. The victory was deserved and could have been by more goals with some more clinical finishing but a win is a win and that is just what the doctor ordered.

Newcastle took the lead 16 minutes into the match when Steven Taylor surged forward playing the ball down the left for Yoan Gouffran who passed in field to Yohan Cabaye who stroked the ball home after sidestepping West Ham defender Razvan Rat.

It should have been two soon after but for Gouffran’s effort being cleared off the line before Moussa Sissoko spurned another great chance to double the lead by firing tamely at Adrian after being played in by Cabaye.

A second goal did arrive just after the half-hour mark as Loic Remy applied the finish to a fine team move by controlling Moussa Sissoko’s right-wing cross with his chest before poking home.

At 2-0 we were cruising and fully deserved the lead but a goal just before half-time gave the hosts some hope as Mike Williamson bundled into his own net after Carlton Cole’s initial shot was saved by Krul.

Half-time: West Ham 1-2 Newcastle

As you might have expected, a goal just before the break gave the hosts a platform to build on as they launched the ball forward at every opportunity. And it would have paid off had Cole not fired a Matt Taylor cross wide from six yards before Andy Carroll, introduced just after the hour mark, skied Stewart Downing cross way over from eight yards.

But despite a bombardment of high balls into the box, the kind we painfully know Allardyce’s football can produce, United held firm and sealed the win deep into stoppage time. Hatem Ben Arfa was brought down on the edge of the West Ham box giving Yohan Cabaye the chance to line up a free-kick, which he did perfectly curling his effort up and over the wall and into the back of the net via the post.

Full-time: West Ham 1-3 Newcastle

That’s six away wins for the season already – last season we managed just two so we’re looking at a vast improvement in fortunes on the road. It’s also our fourth win on the spin in London where we always used to struggle.

Yes it could and probably should have been more comfortable but the home side were always going to give it a go in the second period after a dire first half. That is just how it goes, but we held firm and got the win we deserved.

Howay the lads!

  1. Aussie,
Swansea don’t have anywhere near as good a squad as we do. They strengthened but they also lost players and they are missing their best player.

They will pick up. I think they’ll finish top 10. 😯

  2. Knocky-he can’t-well-he can use it but I basically pointed out on here the other day that it would cost him/the club he joins more money in the long run that it would to just outright buy him for say 20 million. Basically most Sporting Courts will rule that the club will be due compensation from any club that Cabaye then joins-that could be something like 15mil+ I would imagine. That club would then have to compensate Cabaye for initiating it (assuming it was pre planned) and would have to stump up a 12-18 mil signing on fee (because those fee’s are taxed, cabaye isn’t exactly going to take the 2-3mil left from tax and take a big cut himself is he?)

Just the rags and newcastle fanzines writing up **** to try and make everything bad again.

Aussie-I heard it’s because they’ve been really unlucky with injuries pal. Like last year all of our injuries were expected/deserved because Pardew and Carver are such bad coaches they can’t keep players fit, so that was fair. But Swansea have been really cursed this year, poor them.

    😛

  4. JJ, excuses excuses mate! Laudrup is a wonder manager and injuries shouldnt come into it! 😛
Newkie, true enough mate, our management can coach the goals and skill out of players and also coach injuries into them! 😆

  5. Joe Kinnear might have a panic attack waking up in his office, looking out the window, realising the players aren’t there. What do I tell Ashley, his going to kill me because he going to have to buy a new team and i’ll have to pull my finger out my **** and sign some players. The tea lady walks and tells him there in Dhabi for a week but by then his heart gives way. This isn’t funny but why have we got a senile demented man with a bad heart as DOF. Answer Mr Ashley ?

      (Quote)

  6. JJ-Where do you get that from about being a loner socially?

I still think Cisse is more sell-able and fits least with the football that we play. But then we’re woefully short up front and I’m not sure anyone wants him anyway. Cabaye seems a cert to go in the summer, it would take a miracle for us to reach top 4. Whenever he goes it’s a big opportunity for whoever is left in the middle to see if they can step up to the plate.

  7. Newkie,
This isn’t the first time when the team have gone away on a “bonding” trip he hasn’t gone. He usually goes back to France at every opportunity.

      (Quote)

  8. JJ-It’s usually to see his family though isn’t it? That’s the jist I got. Not sure if that really makes you any less sociable, just means he’s not dying to get his **** wet away from the missus like Pards and co who go abroad. 😈

  9. according to the papers (people believe what they want to believe it seems) this must be PSG’s 10th bid in 2 years. According to people last year Anita was Cabaye replacement then and he is still here.

Sick to death of the whole thing really and Newkie he has been a cert to leave for two years now every window people have assumed he is leaving. Although it is likely he will leave in the summer I just wish people would just stfu about it and wait and see.

If there is one thing you can rely on Ashley to do it is to get the most amount of money possible for him, so I am not to worried. every player is replaceable.

Cabaye is a Newcastle player on great form that’s all I care about at the minute and whatever happens I will love dreamboat for some for some of the goals and magic moments he has give me.

cringe worthy Stem the jokes about Kinnear stopped being funny about a week after he came back. starting to think you write for nufcmad

  10. Cheers Newkie
My understanding of FIFAs Article 17 is ‘it states that any player who signed a contract before the age of 28 can buy himself out of the contract three years after the deal was signed. If he is 28 or older the time limit is shortened to two years.[10][11] Article 17 was introduced in December 2004, with effect from 1 July 2005’ the buy-out being the value of the remaining contract eg 2 years at £50k per week. Cabaye could then add on say £5m for himself (advisors etc) and the buying club would still be quids in – or am I missing something. I think Cabaye is a great player but i’m still of the opinion that Newcastle should dictate when and for how much he leaves. We bought a relatively unknown player who had a great first season, an average second and then went in a strop at the beginning of this season. I’m guessing that if he wasn’t playing as well as he is now, then he’d be sitting tight and seeing out his contract. Much as I want to be entertained I don’t want players, who see us as a stepping stone, to bleed the club dry. We (as well as most other clubs) will always be a selling club if the price is right. Selling our best players at the right price is the only way we can finance buying more ‘Cabayes’. Owners with limited funds are not going to spend millions on players who can run down their contracts and leave for nothing at the end or indeed throw a hissy fit and refuse to play until they get their own way. Let the top 5/6 carry on and bankrupt the game until they get bored. Chelsea have 23 players out on loan for christ’s sake – including Lukaku and Moses. Ba might as well be on loan. I look forward to the day when transfer fees are outlawed and football has a sustainable salary cap – FIFA Financial Fair Play my **** as Jim Royle would say. Much as I am enjoying this season (i’ve enjoyed ‘supporting’ Newcastle most seasons – like marriage ‘for better or worse’) I must say modern football is beginning to depress me – Viva La Revolution

  11. JJ 😛

Santii-Actually I always said Anita was here to play alongside Tiote with Cabaye attacking mid, although that never really happened after he arrived because the team was always so patchwork. In the summer I laughed about the Arsenal bid as well-even with Arteta getting on I just don’t think they needed him, he’s not who I’d pick defensively and they didn’t need an attacking mid even before they bought Ozil! I didn’t think he’d be going anywhere if he played like he did last season. That being said I do think he will go this summer-but I have nothing against him if he does, like you say if he continues in good form and doesn’t mess around then there’s not much more we can ask for. Players move clubs, just the way it is. I’m not whining about Ashley selling our best players though because the reality is we are a stepping stone-99% of football clubs are.

Santi- If Santon’s positioning is anything like it was on the weekend he’s probably made the wrong flight, that’s if he didn’t get hit by the team bus on the way to the airport because he was standing in the road. He’s a good footballer but so bloody frustrating as a defender ❗

  12. Knocky-see this link mate http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2009/may/20/webster-ruling-matuzalem-cas-compensation

The Court of Arbitration for Sport is a higher authority than Fifa and can set compensation awards. Basically it will force the player/the club he joins to pay fees which could be well up to his transfer value or more.

If it was so easy Van Persie and so many others would have moved for a pittance. Mountains out of molehills this one I reckon.

That was an embarassing attempt at sarcasm 🙄

Everybody on here is in agreement that by global standards, Pardew & Carver are rubbish.

English managers & coaches in general are rubbish which explains why we’ve struggled to win anything for a very long time.

Your sarcasm attempt was made worse when you joked that Pardew & Carver couldn’t get the players fit.

It’s no joke mate, they really couldn’t get the players fit which is why the brought in a fitness coaches.

Too many games & not enough squad rotation also causes injuries.

Rushing players back was another cause of injury (Ben Arfa, Cabaye).

Keep trying newkie. You & aussie will make troy proud.

      (Quote)

  14. Aye KK, so bad it gets you every time it seems 🙂

Anyway I’m more having a go at the flavour of the month Laudrupp worshipers who were previously acolytes of Steve Clarke and seem to jump ship to any manager who has a 4-5month good spell. Not so much the Pardew bashers like you, this time 😉

I suppose our squad were entirely unfit for the 2011-12 campaign as well? Shocking display, you know, like when our midfield pairing were the hardest working in the PL, Jonas and Raylor were massively up there in work rate. That kind of thing…. 🙄

Like I said, Pardew and gang were definitely unprepared for the Europa League, minimal experience (Carvers was yonks ago in a different era of rotation really) the trips away messed up the usual training routines for both those who traveled and those who stayed, who likely got away with less effort without their boss keeping an eye on em. Is it so much they are clueless? I’m not so convinced.

      (Quote)

  15. Sorry newkie I wasnt really aiming my points at you there (more the internet in general). I was just using your wording to make my point.

      (Quote)

  16. @newkie

It’s an issue close to my heart. Pardew being manager almost justifies Kinnear being manager too so yeah, you’ll get me every time re Pardew! 😆

You’re giving Pardew credit for ‘upping Jonas’s workrate 😯 ❗ . I suppose he was really lazy before, just like Marveaux is now.

Soon we’ll see Marveaux become the next Jonas, oh wait that’s Gouffran, nevermind…

As for the Laudrupp fans & previous Steve Clarke fans, i just think they’re looking for an alternative to Pardew so i have nothing against them.

However, Laudrup (& even AVB) just don’t seem to be anything better than avaerage imo.

As for Steve Clarke, he really felt Lukaku’s loss.

I think quite highly of Rodgers & Martinez so it will be interesting to how Martinez copes after Lukaku isn’t there next season.

I’m confident Everton will do just as well next season as they are now.

    Top 8
    1) Man City
    2) Chelsea
    3) Arsenal
    4) Liverpool
    5) Everton
    6) Man Utd
    7) Spurs
    8) Newcastle

I still hold out hope of finishing above Spurs & Man Utd.

I think realistically we have a squad capable of doing it & really battle against Liverpool & Everton for 4th but everyone knows my opinion of Pardew, Carver, Kinnear – 3 good old fashioned Englishmen.

      (Quote)

  17. @newkie

‘Like I said, Pardew and gang were definitely unprepared for the Europa League’

    – now it’s you that’s finally talking some sense!

  18. It certainly wasnt Pardews decision not to strengthen the squad before last season. He spent the whole summer asking for signings and must have been ripping his hair out when Llambias fecked up the De Jong, Debuchy and Douglas deals.

Nobody expected us to maintain form in the league and europe with just Anita, Bigi and Amalfitano 😆 as first team signings. We were totally up against it from day one.

If and when we do get back into europe; Id hope the club have learnt their lesson and allow the manager to add a couple of experienced heads to his backroom staff (like fulham have) who could oversee training while the manager and co are abroad. We need 4 more players on top of the current squad and like for like replacements for any significant outs to have a squad capable of juggling all competitions imho…

  19. So SSN saying Kinnear has told them Cabaye definitely won’t be sold in January mmmmm
We will only bring in Cabella if ther are injuries to the first team squad. Also interested in Salah the Basel winger.

  27. @g2

    That’s a very good point.

There is no point having Cisse on the bench.

We’re safe from relegation, we’re out of the cups & so unless we’re really going to push for europe, there is no excuse not to be playing him ahead of Remy (unless of course Remy becomes permanent).

No point trying to boost remy’s value at the expense of decreasing Cisse’s value

  28. @GFN_France: To clarify, Laurent Nicollin is the Montpellier Chairman who says there is a deal for Cabella for after June w/ Newcastle. (1/2) #MHSC #NUFC

@GFN_France: Louis Nicollin, President of Montpellier (and Laurent’s father) denies an agreement with Newcastle for Remy Cabella, but admits offer (2/2).

Pick the bones out of that 😆

      (Quote)

  29. Montpellier Chairman Laurent Nicollin has confirmed to local paper Midi Libre that he has agreed a deal with Newcastle to sell attacking midfielder Remy Cabella but not before June of 2014.

He had the following to say:

‘We have agreed a deal with Newcastle, something I will not go into. However, the deal does not include the departure of Remy Cabella before June. That is a certainty.’

More to follow on this breaking story.

Louis Nicollin, the President of Montpellier and Laurent Nicollin’s father has denied these claims that a deal has been agreed with Newcastle but that an offer has been made.

Get French Football News however understands that Louis Nicollin’s comments are an attempt to lure interest in from other clubs to hijack Newcastle’s Remy Cabella preliminary agreement in order to attract a better offer and that the Montpellier Chairman, Laurent Nicollin, is indeed speaking the truth. Newcastle have an agreement in principle to sign attacking midfielder Remy Cabella from Montpellier this summer.

So there you have it 😆

  30. Aye lads. And Ben Arfa may become a problem as well. Is he going to be happy playing a bit part for us? I don’t think so. Has anyone else noticed how thick around the middle he seems to be now. Reminds me of Jonas last season. Is he not staying fit? Very worrisome. He looks at least 10 pounds too heavy to me. He should be whippet thin and hungry.

      (Quote)

  31. G2 Arsenal fan’s would want to sign Ben Arfa up because Wenger would know how to get the best out of him. I think buying cheaper players than we already have is the was Ashley likes it. Probably lower in wages as well but its sad we can’t compete with the top 4.

  32. Pissed off with this whole Remy Cabella thing already, hate transfer windows. Nicollin whats his face is using us to get a bigger fee me thinks.

  40. ice,
That’s why I’m so annoyed Cisse is sitting bench.

If Remy was actually going to be signed I’d be happy. But we are just screwing the confidence of our ONLY striker.

We won’t finish top four. We won’t finish lower than 10th. So let’s give these guys some game time and try get Cisse firing again.

I say it again… Pardew has no forward thinking.

Enrique ~ I’m not bothered, he still hasn’t got champions league yet at Liverpool, he will now scrap for it with Everton and Tottenham Hotspur. Hardly the big bad ‘glamour club’ he said he was leaving us for is it? Rather embarrassing.
Cabaye~ I’d rather he left now if we are going to lose him for less money in the summer as the couple of positions we drop will not be worth as much money IMO. Maybe I’m getting to influenced by Ashley and financial sensibility but if someone wants to leave and they are worth money I would always rather see us get the money and spent it on targets. Will Cabaye be the first player in a while to beat the regime? Possibly imo. 😈

I posted that Shola would need to be considered as Pardew would give him as much game time as possible.
    Some posters disagreed.
Those who are wondering why Cisse is not getting much game time should now know why.
I have also posted that Pardew will fight to get Shola a contract extension. With Remy going back to QPR in the summer and Cisse probably wanting out sooner rather than later , it only strengthens Pardews arguement for Shola.
Again , I will expect a lot of posters to disagree .

  54. Hard to say Sidekick mate @224. Shola looks even slower now if that’s possible and he did nothing with his last sub appearance. Completely invisible. Pards may like him but if he lets Cisse and Remy go and extends Shola’s contract (or if Mike and Joe do rather) then there are going to be a lot of unhappy supporters.
