Victory at last! Newcastle 3-0 Cardiff

Shola opens the scoring
Shola opens the scoring
Newcastle managed to sign off their home campaign in winning fashion for the first time since 2006, putting the final nail in Cardiff City’s Premier League coffin in the process.

A strange game with little riding on it for the hosts and everything riding on it for the visitors resulted in a pretty comfortable win for a side who have lost the last six on the spin. Aside from a few scares, United deserved the win as Cardiff dropped out of the Premier League with a whimper.

Perhaps the strangest thing about the game was the atmosphere within the ground however. At times it was poisonous as fans vented their anger towards the manager and owner, but by the same token the team remained backed at all times. The planned walk out did go ahead but the numbers who took part weren’t great enough to make the impact that was desired although fair play to those who participated for trying to do something productive.

Frazier Campbell missed the first real chance of the match, snatching his shot wide after Tim Krul made a mess of dealing with a cross from Fabio but United soon started created their own chances, with our right side proving especially fruitful in attack.

Loic Remy saw his effort blocked after Moussa Sissoko crossed into the centre before a shot from Mathieu Debuchy forced David Marshall to push the ball wide. From the following corner Debuchy was again denied, this time by a combination of Marshall and the crossbar before United finally took the lead in the 18th minute when Shola Ameobi nodded in another Sissoko cross.

The former Toulouse man nearly turned from goal provider into goalscorer shortly afterwards, first seeing a shot and then a cross deflected against the woodwork. Despite all of the missed chances it could have been level at half-time had Tim Krul not denied Wilfried Zaha with an outstretched leg.

Half-time: Newcastle 1-0 Cardiff

The second period was a largely started as a largely flat affair with the home side seemingly content on preserving the slender lead and Cardiff unable to rouse themselves into any meaningful attacking move.

However the introduction of former Mackem Kenwyne “Julie” Jones did tilt the balance in favour of the away side temporarily as he forced a point-black save from Tim Krul before Fabricio Coloccini somehow managed to clear an Aron Gunnarsson effort off the line.

Cardiff continued to press, they had to, and eventually United exploited the gaps and made them pay.First Cheik Tiote surged forward on the right before seeing his shot deflected to an unmarked Loic Remy who finished from six yards out to make it 2-0.

It was 3-0 in stoppage time as Dan Gosling crossed for Loic Remy who headed downwards towards goal. David Marshall would have had it but Steven Taylor nipped in and forced the ball home.

Full-time: Newcastle 3-0 Cardiff

I haven’t really got much to remark on regarding the match. It’s a case of “job done” which I suppose is an improvement on recent weeks. It should, and I suspect won’t, paper over any cracks however. Vast improvement is still needed in many areas and an interesting summer awaits.

After our trip to Liverpool next weekend.

  1. G2 , In all seriousness you could be on to something with the whole pervert angle mate. There is something really perverse about the way he treats us the fans, he obviously gets off on seeing us suffer. I have a most disturbing image now imagining him knocking one out at the close of every transfer window safe in the knowledge he’s saved a few quid. 👿 I need to take a shower now.

  2. Well just read on the Chronicle website pardew want’s to give SHOLA a 1 year contract extention 😯 😯 the ****** is just taking the **** out of us . Guess we wont be seeing him get out of the dug out much next season , in the words of a past chairman “They dont know how nasty we can be”. First game at SJP next season is time too let them know .

  3. A lot of you are still whinging on about our play after that mind boggling defeat of Cardiff. My mind is still boggled in fact. 3 goals for and none against! Unbelievable excellence. Excitement galore. Thrills, spills, wor players running amok. Just imagine next season. Shola may reproduce his form from this season! Saylor may play a few minutes! Dummett may drive balls into the opposition’s wall and terrify them! Krul’s feet may get even skinnier! Beautiful.

  4. Only a deviated prevert would suggest signing Shola to a 1 year contract extension. Harrumph. Alan you’re a sick man!

  5. Kim good article indeed. Those guys do good work and their site deserves more traffic than they get IMO

  6. Axel I have said all along that Strolla will be kept on as it saves us having to get another striker in that we might have to buy and pay proper money for.

  7. For wanting to extend Sholas contract alone he should be shown the door, if he thinks he’s our saviour then I truly give up any hope left.

  8. KIMTOON By wanting too extend shola’s contract he should be hung from the Tyne Bridge with the rope tied around his testicles while wearing a Sunderland shirt

  9. Just tuned in. Haven’t had time to read any previous comments.

Anyone fancy a fight over Pardew??

Anyone who dares suggest that he could do better with the pile of **** he has at his disposal better be prepared to meet me on the town moor for a one on one !! 😈

    Fizzin. 😈

  10. @Kim. Good article.

Just shows we can compete. We have money sitting there to spend and have lost 19mil in matchday / Commercial Revenue… thats enough to keep Cabaye at newcastle 🙄

looking at his share price we’ve definitely got the short straw. I’d love to see the list of companies DL & MA told to “**** off” when enquiring about matchday adverts. Mike knows his company and his shareholders can make a lot more by advertising instead.

  11. Mark I agree, I’m starting to think he knew about the Debt/mortgage repayment and chose to use it to his advantage, after all it makes no sense that such an astute business man would fail on such a basic level.

  12. @Kim

you could be right there. As most things with Ashley, we’ll never know the truth.

3 days of thrashing out a deal and he didnt spot that? 😯

  13. KIMTOON i dont think he did know about it ,he did not do due diligence . He got rich quick floating SD on the stock market and bought the first club he could get his hands on , just a fucking shame it was us . The man knew the premiership is shown around the world and thats what he wanted ,did not matter which club he would of covered any stadium he could get with SD signs .

  14. @Axel

I’ve repeatedly said that Pards has no say on recruitment.

He wants Shola as a coach. That’s different. Who knows. Shola might be as good a coach as Jose Morinho, Fergie or Wenger who never played top level football. 😉

      (Quote)

  15. Mark .I have been thinking that for a long time tbh. It’s perfect in it’s simplicity. He never has to pay to advertise his tat for as long as he wants, if he was truly pissed off at the ‘ surprise debt ‘ wouldn’t he of clawed it all back by now ❓ , No he has actually increased it in fact. Truth is if we are such a poison challace he could take the Cabs cash ,the tv cash ,sell a couple of our top players and recoup his debt and flog us for a realistic price and still make some money. Ask yourself why he doesn’t, the answer lies in the dramatic increase in SD share price since buying us.

      (Quote)

  16. TROY you could be right that Shola could make a good coach , trainer , manager .After all he has played under some good managers . Trouble is Pardew wants him too stay on as a player and is quoted as say he will ask the owner if its ok .

      (Quote)

  17. Axel ,yes that’s my issue too, he could well make an excellent coach as you say but we need fresh blood through the door. Younger ,fresher legs who can actually score more than 2 or 3 goals a season. 🙄

      (Quote)

  18. Well with Liverpool winning with 3 goals and counting they have it all to play for especially if Man City slip up . Expecting a right royal pasting on sunday 🙁

The most powerful companies in Britain are the newspaper companies.

The tabloids decide who will run the country. The Sun can bring governments down.

I’ve no doubt that Pards is in the sights of the Chronicle because of the criticism he’s gave them.

I have no doubt they are influential enough to drive Pards out.

Pards made the biggest mistake of his career criticising the Sunday Sun and Chronicle.

The gullible fans can’t see through it.

    I can. ;-).

      (Quote)

  21. @Axel.

Can you provide the link where it says Pards wants to sign him for another season.

  23. TROY in fairness too Pards he is only slagging them off because Ashley told him too , after banning them all . That though is one of my gripes with Pards he needs to grow a pair and tell the owner to **** off , after all Pardew holds one trump card nee ****** else will want too work for the fat knacker . Pards needs too stand tall and start telling the truth and not talking so much bullshit ,oh yeah he needs the team too start playing a bit of attacking football too . Even if he starts doing that i want him out though too much water under the bridge so too speak.

  24. Shola: Yes, we’ve had our fair share of ups and downs over the years but on the main I’ve been overwhelmed by the support and everything that has come with playing for Newcastle United.”

His manager Alan Pardew, who is under severe pressure to make improvements to the team, also revealed he is planning to make an offer.

“That’s something me and Shola and the Board will look at,” Pardew added.

“He’s been an absolutely magnificent servant for this football club.”

      (Quote)

  25. Alan Pardew wants to hand Shola Ameobi a one-year contract.

The Chronicle understands that Pardew sees value in keeping the experienced striker on the books at St James’ Park next season as a senior player. But he will have to convince his board that extending Ameobi’s 14-year stay on Tyneside is worth a squad space.

Ameobi admits that his future is in doubt but for now he will be hoping to head to the World Cup in Brazil for Nigeria.

Pardew has told some players who have been released that they can base themselves at the club’s Benton base for pre-season training if they don’t get fixed up with a new club.

And Ameobi will be welcomed back after long service with the Magpies if that were to be the case.

Pardew said after the game: “That’s something me and Shola and the Board will look at. He’s been an absolutely magnificent servant for this football club.”

Ameobi grabbed the 79th goal of his career for the Magpies and is now joint third top scorer in the Premier League record books for Newcastle alongside Andy Cole. Only Alan Shearer and Peter Beardsley have more.

Ameobi refused to rule out extending his stay on Tyneside. He said: “I never say never in this game because I don’t know what is going to happen next season, but it has been a fantastic 14 years for me here and I’ve loved every minute.

“Yes, we’ve had our fair share of ups and downs over the years but on the main I’ve been overwhelmed by the support and everything that has come with playing for Newcastle United.”

Ameobi was delighted to sign off the season with a home win. He said: “It was important to show our character, that we are still fighting for every point. Professional pride kicks in as you cross that white line because we want to win.

      (Quote)

  26. Well Pulis has certainly instilled fighting spirit into that team I’ll give him that. 3 goals in 11 minutes is quite something.

      (Quote)

  27. G Johnson had a mare for their 3 goals..

    @Kim.

Pulis has shown how to install belief into a team. thats with **** forwards and **** defenders & without internationals. If he had Remy they would of won the league 😛

  28. The bin dipping ******’s have well and truly screwed it up ,their is no way Man city will throw it away now .i just love it 😀

  29. @troy

2 pts ahead of Stoke & 5pts ahead of Palace – do you really suggest their squad is as good as ours?

We’re also only 8pts better off this season despite not having to compete in europe or the cups & having a stronger squad than last season – hardly an improvement.

I feel bad for Pardew as a human being but not as a manager – as FJ says, if he can dish it out to Ben Arfa & Marveaux then he should be able to take it.

Could we have gotten a cheap unknown manager to do a better job than Pardew? Absolutely yes – Simeone, Klopp, Garcia are all examples of managers getting the best out of their players.

Pardew has no loyalty to us. Wenger is loyal to Arsenal, Simeone to Madrid, Martinez to Wigan & now Everton, Klopp to dortmund.

Pardew is rubbish & he insults the fans – is he any different to Kinnear?

      (Quote)

  30. @TROY 177

got to agree with you there. Really stupid of Pardew to criticise the local papers.

I have to admit its a little ott from the Trinity owners, even Simon Birds doing his bit…quite embarrassing really.

I can remember when the Chron were pretty pro-Ashley for a bit and refused to speak out. The banning then the criticism has got them into a frenzy

      (Quote)

  31. @Axel

I asked you to show me a link where Pards wanted Shola to stay on for another season.

You provide a chronicle article where he doesn’t state anywhere that he wants to offer Shola another seasons contract.

Please read the article again and decide whether Pards is being diplomatic considering he has another game to go or is telling you he is wanting Shola to sign a new contract.

I’m sorry Axel, but this is what I’m up against daily. Misinformation. You might get away with it with Aussie but you won’t with me. 😛

    Hilarious. 😆

      (Quote)

  32. Yeah I said when the ban was made it’s a massive mistake and shows they understand nothing about the power of the local press who up until that march had been pretty wet when it came to criticizing the club. The club should of took it on the chin as the paper had no choice other than to report it really .

      (Quote)

  33. @Mark

I have no issue with the paper attacking Ashley or Pardew.

If people can’t decide for themselves what is right or wrong then more fool them.

Pards needs to learn. He’s bloody 50 yrs old. If he hasn’t learned to play the press then that’s his fault.

    No sympathy whatsoever.

I don’t blame him like others for the plight on the field but being a football manager is also about dealing with the press.

KK was a genius. Pards has used the press to his advantage so when times are tough he needs to learn the same trick.

More fool him. Up the Chronicle. They do a good job. It’s a shame the readers are thick but that is life and a manager needs to understand that.

      (Quote)

  34. In addition, my real hope is, that Ashley suffers the same fate. The Chronicle is as influential on Tyneside as the Sun is nationally.

Ashley hasn’t realised that but they are capable of bringing him idem over time.

They are so crafty, they didn’t react with article after article with the ban. They continue to publish the Toon supplement but now craftily and slowly gouge and dig at the eyes of the club without anyone realising the slow onslaught.

I genuinely believe they will drive Ashley out before the fans unless Ashley sees the light and forgives them. 😉

  35. Troy, it’s refreshing to see that you have finally learned about misinformation after all these years. Now you need to get your head around wiifm (what’s in it for me) and then you can start to see how spin works as well, in relation to media outlets (including blogs, tweets, etc).

Be gentle with those folk who are still learning. Remember that there was once a time when you too were ignorant of these forces.

I’m looking forward to the silly season and laughing at those who hang on the every word of twits and media monkeys. If it served their purpose they’d tell us that Star Trek was a documentary. 😆

The sad thing about that, though, is that people would believe it, and say they always thought that was the case. And then they’d find evidence to support the claim.

      (Quote)

  39. I’m glad you are looking forward to the silly season mate! 😆 You do realise that we will only sign the sh*t players we are linked with! 😆 😆

As far as hitch hikers go… well Troy did look like a little lost dog when I picked him up from the side of the road. I really felt sorry for him but he did perk up a bit when I told him we were going to Brisvegas! 😆 😆

  40. I see Anita and Saylor have both come out and said that the players were not affected by the fans protest at the match on Saturday. My guess is they know the real reason behind the protest and probably agree truth be told. They will want more signings and ambition shown as much as us and I wouldn’t mind betting they’d like Jabba gone too.

  41. I see Colo has confirmed he’s staying nxt year and said we’ll hopefully sign a few players.

      (Quote)

  46. I know a lot people have an unabashed hatred for Shola Ameobi but judging on past windows, would you rather go into next season with him or without him? He’s scored more goals from open play than Cisse this season and I would say has generally played better with Remy, and he’s also proven he can play alongside Ba or other goalscorers. Cisse has shown he struggles to do this.

Now I would say a proven goalscorer is an absolute must because Cisse is still misfiring whatever the excuses made for him and Shola has never been prolific in his life.

In an ideal world Shola would have retired about five years ago, but as it stands I barely trust Ashley to bring in the two strikers we are desperate for let alone three if we release Shola and Cisse wants to move on.

Then again I guess some will be watching the world cup with baited breath hoping someone breaks his leg and ends his career 😕

      (Quote)

  47. Newkie , I would keep him for another season even if its for leadership in the dressing room. Look he was never a world beater but he is a decent player , he shouldnt start games anymore but at the minute he is needed due to lack of options.

      (Quote)

  48. @Newkie

    No.no.! No!

Your point was totally and utterly lost when you said Shola has played better than Remy! 😯

How can anyone ever suggest that? Remy has been outstanding since he came and his overall CF play puts him way above any player in the squad as a footballer.

      (Quote)

  50. I said before he went to Palace that we should have been in for Pulis – I really rate the guy.

I don’t buy that he plays hoofball either. There was a nice article on the BBC this weekend claiming that he analyses a team and works out how best to utilise them – not his fault that the Stoke team was full of cloggers when he joined!

Plus Jabba would like him as he’s never been relegated!

      (Quote)

  51. Troy-I said he’s played better *with* Remy not than Remy. I don’t think Cisse ever really got comfortable with Remy, I think he struggles to get partnerships going. He either needs a 90 minute target man which Shola clearly isn’t, or we need to totally replace our front line. I would rather do the latter but we’ll see what happens in the summer…

Johno-Aye, I would have been happy to keep Harps on instead of elliot as well, not sure elliot is an improvement just younger, and Harper knew the club and the fans better than anyone else, probably more than anyone still involved in football tbh.

      (Quote)

  52. Obviously Remy was our best player and had we signed him and had him alongside Ba I think we could have pushed on nicely, but sadly now we won’t have either because we haven’t had a managing director strong enough to remove Ba’s clause and sign Remy for 7 mil and the going rate of wages when we had the opportunity! And now we’re likely to be back with Shola ffs. Sad times.

      (Quote)

  53. I would keep Shola.
He should be pushed to 4th place behind Adam Campbell.
Cisse needs to be sold and we need two new strikers.
Squads generally need 3/4 strikers depending on which formation they will be playing – we need two decent strikers as it stands already – Cisse is on too high wages to be kept as backup so it stands to reason that we should keep Shola in the reserves rather than add another need to our already huge transfer wishlist 🙄

      (Quote)

  54. Newkie, agree, Ba and Remy would have been a good duo up front but neither of the like passing so they would probably come to blows after a period of time! 🙂

  55. TROYwell mate I told you Southampton would finish above the toon you said they would, not bad for a guy that cannot speak a word of English, yes they spent more than us but you still have to get them to play as a team as spurs found out to there cost, maybe pardew can learn something there

Don’t be silly. That’s one of the most ludicrous things I’ve ever heard! 🙄

      (Quote)

  60. Aussie-true, but I was reliably informed by JJ that spilled shots from a striker that result in someone else following up and scoring count as assists, so in reality Ba and Remy should work wonders together 😛

  62. Troy-I accept your apology for misquoting me fella, I realise how hard it can be for you to say those words 😆

As for Shola, I’m being a realist. Like I said, if you’d told me Shola would still be playing for us five years ago I’d have both laughed and cried. Looking at the summer and next season with the possibility of us having only Cisse, Campbell and Armstrong as our strikers well…given the choice of Shola or no Shola then I would take him.

But if we bring two quality forwards in then obviously I would let him go.

      (Quote)

  63. Troy – you wouldn’t keep Shola as 4th choice back up?
I don’t know enough about the youngsters these days, is there anyone other than AC ready to be on the fringes on the squad?
Also our squad is lacking in any vague identity or passion as it is. Ameobi is at least someone that we know cares about the club.

      (Quote)

  64. I think Armstrong needs another year in the youth squad/reserves personally.
