Game On! Newcastle v Crystal Palace

Game On at St James' Park
Game On at St James’ Park
Afternoon all. Welcome to this ‘Game On’ article which today will take us through every twist and turn of the visit of Crystal Palace.

It’s game number three of the Premier League season and we’ve yet to register a win or a goal. If both of those change today it should promote a better feeling around the place as we head into the first international break of the campaign.

It’s also our last game before the transfer window slams (for some reason it always ‘slams’) shut which is quite topical given our lack of goal threat and until that deadline passes there will be a continuous cry for an extra striker. In fact even beyond the window our need for a reliable striker is apparent but I guess we’ll soon find out whether we end up with one or not. I suspect the latter.

Being a 3pm kick-off there is no live TV broadcast of the match here in the UK however there are reports of numerous overseas and online channels showing the game so if you know of a decent stream please don’t he shy and share it with us by posting the link in the ‘comments’ section below.

For injury news and full preview of the match you’re best advised to head over to the match preview which features a history of the fixture and some stats thrown in for good measure. For official team news please see below.

Which just about brings this to a close as there is nothing left for me to say. I just hope that come full-time we’re talking about a first league win of the campaign and with that a first league goal of the season.

Howay the lads!

  2. Liam I think that deal will be dependant on a new defender coming in.
Unfortunately we have so far failed to get any over the line.
My feeling is that we are done until January.
By which time we could have a new manager 😛 😛 😉

  3. Our abject failure to off load players is as embarrassing as our failure to strengthen the areas we are desperate for.
The clever boys running the club, not so clever after all.

      (Quote)

  4. Saints got Aldy then. Weren’t people using southampton as a cautionary tale and saying how their squad has been ripped apart because of the success? They’re playing well enough on the pitch, have assembled some great replacements and arguably making a good fist of improving the first team. Imagine their fans have quitened down a fair bit..

      (Quote)

  5. If we’re unloading Mbiwa, surely, surely we need a new centre back in? Ok he wasn’t great but he could play across the back four to a degree. He was our go to right back half the time…who else is going to play there? Santon? Haidara?…

      (Quote)

  6. Beardo-Anita just doesn’t cut the mustard for me, he’s too frail for a defensive role and he gets terrorised in the centre of the park. Unfortunately his shooting is woeful and he naturally avoids getting into the box so he can’t really play in an advanced role either. Every time we play him at full back the opposition just need a long diagonal ball to cause him trouble.

      (Quote)

  7. BB, maybe no one wants our highly paid **** players… so how can we get rid of them! 😉

      (Quote)

  8. I couldn’t disagree with that Newkie, but for some reason Percy thinks otherwise.
Anita has been a big disappointment since his arrival unfortunately.

      (Quote)

  9. Just don’t think Anita is made for this league. He has to have been the strangest acquisition to date, except for maybe the wrong Amalfitano. We spent 7.5 mil on a central midfielder when we could have done with money spent anywhere else…

We can’t play him colback and Tiote, and I know who I’d drop.

      (Quote)

  10. Do Mbiwa is going on loan. That’s fair enough as we are supremely strong in defence! 😯

Finally people may get aboard the reality train and realise our squad will be so much weaker than it was last season it will be quite dangerous.

3 or 4 PL wins in the whole of 2014 and now a weaker squad… What could possibly go wrong?

      (Quote)

  11. There’s so much wrong with our team at the moment it’s hard to comment. The game totally passed De Jong by. Not fit or far too fast for him? Hard to tell as he only had 3-4 touches. If Riv gets 10 this season it will be a miracle so we’ll probably see Cisse restored as main man. Cabella seems to be improving if slowly, Janmaat and Colback are OK and I think Ayoze will come good. But what’s up with Ferrarya? We’ve had him six weeks now.
We desperately need to replace Willo. The way he just stood and watched their guy control and shoot for the 2nd was disgraceful.
Depressing stuff but hopefully Pardew will be gone as I predicted by Oct.

      (Quote)

  12. I also agree with Newkie – Gouffran (who may be our best striker) has been **** since xmas. He just isn’t a winger. It’s a Pardew problem. Doesn’t matter what he calls the formation we play like we’re 442. Bloke’s stuck in the eighties. Whatever happens just keep your (442 shape). Dinosaur.

      (Quote)

  13. Georgio

You’ve just slated half the team and then hope Pards is gone by October.

I can’t argue with your points, I’ve been saying the same. What’s Pards meant to do with a **** squad. ?

      (Quote)

  14. Next game is against Southampton isn’t it? Dear god I hope not. I really don’t think supporters can take a good thrashing, and it will be a good thrashing too.

I’m just about finished with NUFC.

      (Quote)

  15. STUART

Please shut the door on your way out. NUFC doesn’t need fans who are finished with the club after we sign 9 players and are only 3 games into the new PL season.

      (Quote)

  16. Stuart you just said the one thing that’s not acceptable – it’s our club, whatever is going on, and most of us have seen it p,entry worse than today, seen much worse owners and really bad managers. If you want Easy success, go to a Chelsea of Man City blog.

      (Quote)

  17. TDS – NO we have replaced 7 players and have 2 back on loan where they came from.
We are so much weaker than last season already.
We have never replaced Cabaye or Remy.
The club is a fucking disgrace.
Rotten from top to bottom and supported by stupid deluded fans who turn up 50k at a time to watch total and utter dross every other weekend.
I totally understand where Stuart is coming from.
Who are you to say which fans NUFC needs or not.
Everyone has their own opinions and are welcome to share them here to get them off their chests.
Dear me, perhaps you would be better off going onto Ed’s blog.
All they do is fight with each other. Pathetic
    👿

      (Quote)

  18. Oh another one telling people where to go.
    sheesh 👿
Who wants easy success anyway ?
Most just want to see a decent performance from the Lads on the pitch with a little inspiration from the bench.
God almighty, where is it written that we have to enjoy the utter shyte that’s being served up at the moment like ❓

      (Quote)

  19. Stuart has every right to feel brassed off, just cause 9 have come in it means jack ****, all they have done is replace what’s missing. They have not replaced Remy, Ba or Cabs, at least not with the same quality anyhow. Even Pards admits he wants another forward in and lets not forget this windows net spend is around £3m hardly gonna break the back is it. Our team looks shambolic at the back and if we don’t bring in a CB especially if Mbiwas off it’s a disgrace imo and bordering on negligence. Not one of us on here has the right to condemn fellow fans for their opinions and telling them to go elsewhere when they are fed up with it all is out of order. Yes we have seen worse at the club but how does that make it better now, it’s like that python sketch where they all try to out do one another with how bad things were when they was kids.

      (Quote)

  20. No one is enjoying seeing NUFC struggle, and without new first team player(s) it will be a struggle. Over more than 35 years, however, I’ve never let poor football on the pitch, thieves in the boardroom or idiots in the dugout dilute my support for the club – my grandad and my Dad supported theToon before me, and if we don’t keep on keeping on, then I might as well say to my lad that it would be okay to support a CL club, not his family club, his local club. I, for one, can’t understand support being dependent upon success.

      (Quote)

  21. Fans have the right to be brassed off but saying you’re “just about finished with NUFC” crosses the line for me.

3 **** league games in and some people are writing off this team and our new players and threatening to stop supporting the club…it’s pathetic.

If you’d offered this window to fans at the beginning, most would have taken it.

Nothing wrong with being critical of certain decisions or being disappointed by certain things, but fans get behind the club, not complain all the time that it isn’t meeting their expectations.

      (Quote)

  22. Too many fans seem to have the mistaken impression that the first time under KK and the time under SBR are standard for NUFC. They were our golden periods since the mid 50s!

I didn’t start to support NUFC on condition things were always that good.

      (Quote)

  23. Troy – didn’t think of it like that but our form since xmas is stonewall relegation form. Some may argue that it’s only 3 games into a new season and give them a chance etc (that’s what proper fans do apparently). The 3 games are just a continuation of last season’s rubbish. I predicted a torrid start to the season, mainly because of the amount of new players, resulting in Ashley puling the plug on Pardew by the end of Oct. Nothing’s changed my mind. 2 or 3 of those signings don’t look up to it to me. Can I still be a proper fan in the championship? A new manager will just save us.

      (Quote)

  24. TDS – things have rarely ben that good, but then again, its not wrong to state the bleedin obvious, that things could be a hell of a lot better.
I think there is a lot of frustration with the way things are at the moment.
We may well have managerial stability, with the 2nd longest serving so-called manager in the EPL. But the club is blatantly in turmoil once again.
For it to be so early in the season is an indictment of the regime, who clearly don’t give a toss anyway.
Fans aren’t important, just the money, money, money.

      (Quote)

  25. TDS, It’s a culmination of successive windows being poor that is irking many of us under this regime. Many fans are blinded by 9 in comings and as much as I am pleased to see De Jong, Colback and Janmaat in particular, I’m not fooled into thinking they have done brilliant business. It is maximum in for minimal spend and it shows mate. What they should of done was get 3 quality guys in, a CB, FORWARD and Playmaker to directly replace Remy, cabs and Colos replacement or new partner imo. Then add a couple if a good price/deal came along either now or January. The important acquisitions should of been dealt with at the start of this window.

      (Quote)

  26. GEORGIO

Did I say anything like that whatsoever? We’ve signed 9 players (albeit with only 7 added to the squad I know) and they need to be given some time surely?

I’m talking about fans threatening to stop supporting the club, not fans having opinions about this player or that player.

      (Quote)

  27. KIM

Mate, face it! Players of the quality of Cabaye and Remy don’t want to join NUFC! They all want to join a big CL club so the only hope we have is to sign them at just the level below and try to develop them to that level.

We’re still a big club that can get good deals. £12M for Long is crazy! Even £28M for Lukaku is really big money and a gamble for one player that a fellow CL club didn’t see as good as Ba or a misfiring Torres.

I don’t think it’s a brilliant window either but expecting us to blow £50M on transfer fees for 3 players just was never going to happen.

      (Quote)

  28. Kim – so much for the in depth scouting of players before we buy them.
Making sure they are not only a good enough player for NUFC, but that they have the right personal qualities etc …blah blah blah bullshit.
There should be an inquest into all of this.
Troy has said previously, and I am starting to agree, Carr is scouting the wrong players for Pardew and for NUFC.
The list of Carr recommended signings who have flopped is growing ever longer.
    Carr OUT 😆

      (Quote)

  29. Gotta back up TDS here – if, as seems near certain, we don’t sign either a CB or a CF, then then we are certainly weak for this window, and it’s all very risky and very disappointing.

No matter what I think about the window, however, and I welcome all views on the team, the manager and the owner, I can’t get my head around how it’s ok for anyone t say they’re done with NUFC – if people had done that in the old second division, under Jim Smith or Ardilles, or when the Hall’s took out of the club the money that should have pushed both the KK and the SBR teams on then we would have a choice ipof supporting Berwick or the Heed.

      (Quote)

  30. TDS _ ” so the only hope we have is to sign them at just the level below and try to develop them to that level.”
That is the funniest thing EVER.
More players get ‘PARDEWED’ than develop into better players.
Even our GK has turned **** lately.

      (Quote)

  31. BB

Most clubs are run that way! Forget the days of SJH who bought the club as a fan. Abramovich may have bought the club as a plaything, but most owners treat it as a business, albeit a fun one to run.

I agree, we’re lacking someone senior who really gets the fans and can engage with the fans, but frankly that wouldn’t make things any better really….it would just make some of us feel better by giving good PR.

The club isn’t in any turmoil whatsoever, that’s a total myth concocted by the media who love to wind up tightly strung Toon fans.

I’d like to see a commanding centre half and a big and clinical striker too, but I’ll always want to see the club moving forward. If we’d signed those two early on and not the others, we’d have people complaining that our squad is too thin…it’s never perfect.

      (Quote)

  32. BB

That is complete horseshit. Some fans slag off the quality of our signings because we aren’t spending big money on big names and yet we’ve turned bargain deals of the likes of Cabaye, Ba, Debuchy and Remy into players good enough to move to top PL clubs. And others have come on too.

I suppose Alex Ferguson is **** because the likes of Demba-Demba, Veron, Taibi and Bebe turned out to be **** too? Were they all Fergied?

      (Quote)

  33. Stuart didn’t say he was done with NUFC.
What he actually said was “I’m just about finished with NUFC.”
We all know that ‘once a mag, always a mag’.
Like I say its more an outpouring of frustration than anything else.

      (Quote)

  34. TDS – that is the ONLY way NUFC are moving forwards.
Buying them cheap and selling at a massive profit.
    Good business indeed.
Doesn’t move the club on one jot tho.
We will still aim for mid table mediocrity at best. Nothing more, nothing less.
The next big sale will be young Rolo.
We are NOT developing players for the benefit of NUFC, but I’ll bet the bank balance looks awesome.

      (Quote)

  35. TDS – the he’ll SJH ran the club as a fan – granted he was really goor at PR, but Keegan had to walk out on him to get any funds released, he sold Sir Les just when we had a real chance to stay at the top of the league, he, his son and his cronies took millions in ‘bonuses’ and ‘dividends’ out of the club each and every season, even when we only addedBowyer after CL qualification, and he made an absolute mint on his investment – oh, and he was fully involved in the FFS decisions that nearly bankrupted the club then was such a fan that he sold to Ashley (who I thi k is, on balance, a more responsible owner, bad as he is)

Rant over. Loved some of the football, way more angry than about now because it could have been so much better and we missed our chance to be in the elite then…

      (Quote)

  36. So basically we are a stepping stone club for players to move on to bigger and better clubs with REAL ambitions.
    Well isn’t that just marvellous.
    WOOOO FUCKING HOOOO 👿

      (Quote)

  37. Pardew doesn’t ‘develop’ players anyway. He won’t even give Armstrong more than 3 minutes at the end of a game, nor Bigirimana, nor Campbell oh and he has done a stirling job on MYM too.
Don’t talk to me about developing players.
    THATS your horseshit right there.

      (Quote)

  38. Oh and as for REMY- he was too good for us in the first place.
All we did was showcase him for other teams. That’s not development in my book. We even paid a loan fee for the pleasure. Great bit of business that one was.

      (Quote)

  39. So the news is all about MYM going to AS Roma on loan, but there is nowt about any possible replacement coming in.
Cannit be right. Are we really gonna start the season with only 3 CB’s ❓

      (Quote)

  40. oh wait I missed the Nastasic link. Phew
There’s a one we can develop for manc city’s benefit.

      (Quote)

  41. TDS, Is it not worth spending £15- £20m on a quality forward who may keep you in the PL with his goals for next couple of years than risk relegation and all the loss of TV cash and place prize money?. What we have done is false economy mate imo, our net spend is £3m ffs

      (Quote)

  42. TDS also I don’t believe they won’t come to us, it’s a matter of finances and we won’t pay the transfer fees asked.

      (Quote)

  43. I read the other day Lacazette wants to come but we won’t cough up the asking price, we’d rather haggle over a couple of million and risk losing millions if relegated.

      (Quote)

  44. BB

Actually, our bank balance really isn’t anything to write home about…it hasn’t been for years! And yes, as we’re not a CL club, we will be vulnerable to big CL clubs poaching our players. Would you rather we spent big money on average PL players like Long, Gomis or Cleverly?

Do you think the only way to move the club forward is to spend massively?

We’ve made some decent enough signings and if they improve like the likes of Tiote, Cabaye, Debuchy and Sissoko did then we can keep moving forward.

We should be aiming at top 8 this season in my opinion.

      (Quote)

  45. Exactly KIm –
we could have had Lacazette here last month if we had only paid the asking price, or at least offered close to it. All we did was offer a derisory amount and got their backs up. Now we are desperate and they hold all the cards. Good business dealings my ****.
    Clueless imho.
£12-15M would have been a good deal for a striker that knows where the back of the net is.
It’s all well and good buying players with potential, and hoping to bring them on, but you need a sprinkling of top quality in the mixer too.
Unfortunately I think we will reap what we sow this season.
A poor crop from a dodgy farmer.

Well…yeah…and I’ve argued that side of things before to be honest. But if you discount that era, we’ve basically done nothing for decades!

No doubt we did miss our chance to be in the elite. With excellent management at all levels, we could have done so much better. But then fans of Villa, Leeds and Blackburn could be saying the same. Fact is, Liverpool and Man Utd. are just huge clubs, City and Chelski are artificially inflated and Arsenal are the one club who has grown from a big club to a very big club due to being really well run.

Things could always be better…fans of every club could say that…

What we really need is a bloody trophy! Tell me the next biggest club to have not won a trophy for 45 years…

Some of the deals we have done have been cracking. My gripe is that we are not looking to keep them to move the club forwards, but just to sell them on to make a profit. Its madness.
Oh and Tiote and Sissoko are not improving either. That is patently obvious by the lack of interest in them in the market place. Despite Tiote being touted to all and sundry.

Plenty of players of all clubs have developed and plenty haven’t. You can’t slate the club for MYM and Bigi not matching your expectations and not credit the club for Aarons, Cabaye, Tiote, Krul etc. developing.
