Game On! Newcastle v Crystal Palace

Game On at St James' Park
Game On at St James’ Park
Afternoon all. Welcome to this ‘Game On’ article which today will take us through every twist and turn of the visit of Crystal Palace.

It’s game number three of the Premier League season and we’ve yet to register a win or a goal. If both of those change today it should promote a better feeling around the place as we head into the first international break of the campaign.

It’s also our last game before the transfer window slams (for some reason it always ‘slams’) shut which is quite topical given our lack of goal threat and until that deadline passes there will be a continuous cry for an extra striker. In fact even beyond the window our need for a reliable striker is apparent but I guess we’ll soon find out whether we end up with one or not. I suspect the latter.

Being a 3pm kick-off there is no live TV broadcast of the match here in the UK however there are reports of numerous overseas and online channels showing the game so if you know of a decent stream please don’t he shy and share it with us by posting the link in the ‘comments’ section below.

For injury news and full preview of the match you’re best advised to head over to the match preview which features a history of the fixture and some stats thrown in for good measure. For official team news please see below.

Which just about brings this to a close as there is nothing left for me to say. I just hope that come full-time we’re talking about a first league win of the campaign and with that a first league goal of the season.

Howay the lads!

Quoting net spend is a false stat. We don’t know the details of other fees and wages etc.

Yes. I’d like to see us sign a £15-20M striker but I don’t think we need that to stay in the league. And you know we’ll only sign one if the deal is right.

As far as player signings go, we just have to deal with it that Mike Ashley’s remit is to sign players that will be assets to the club (i.e. their value will increase over time). He’s a businessman, that’s what he does. It’s down the rest of the guys at the club to focus on the football.

#nufc are spending the last few hours of the window trying to sell Hatem Ben Arfa.

    got our priorities right then…

  4. TDS, But the football takes a second place as it’s business first with Jabba, you cannot treat a team as a business like SD, by buying cheap and selling high. All that does is swell the bank balance not the trophy cabinet and any player cohesion in the team is constantly disrupted each window when we sell any of our success stories . That approach will never lead us onto the glory land despite what the board say. We have taken this approach for several windows now, selling our best guys and signing cheaper versions who may or may not come good, are we any closer to the top 5 ?, have we won a cup .

Aarons may have looked promising at Bristol but loads of players do. Come on…you know the way football works. Every club has exciting youngsters that people say could be the next big thing. But most of them don’t fulfil that promise. Obviously we know more promising NUFC youngsters than any other club but some obvious ones are Ricketts, Rodwell, Bentley…my Watford supporting mate swore blind that Gifton Noel-Williams would be an England international for years…

Aarons certainly wasn’t the real deal. He just had promise.

Hearing #nufc unlikely to sign a MYM replacement. Thinking is he wouldn’t have played. With HBA news, it could be a frustrating night…

  7. Will people NOW agree Graham Carr is redundant as a scout for this club.

Whether it be he scouts poor players or this club isn’t set up to utilise the players he scouts – he is utterly pointless at Newcastle.

  8. This whole window has left me frustrated.

New players in great. How many did we need?
Cabella, De Jong and Sissoko all better in the middle.

Selling our winger (HBA + Marv) yet bought no wingers.
    Obertan and Aarons only wingers.

    Riviere and Ferreyra?
    Are the premiership standard?

Janmaat looks the only good buy, yet he is just replacement.

For me, compared to the team that finished the season in 5th, this is a million miles away from that team. And worst of all, players like Krul, Colo and Sissoko seem to have completely lost interest in playing for us.

    Well done Pardew and Ashley.

      (Quote)

  9. KIM

Yep. Ashley treats the club as a business. Just the same as most owners do. That’s modern football, not an indictment of NUFC.

I can’t see any issues with squad cohesion other than HBA causing problems. In fact compared to the days of Dyer, Bowyer, Carroll, Huckerby etc. I’d say our squad looks wonderfully behaved and definitely working together!

Closer to the top 5? Bloody hell that’s tough…but I think we need to assess that at the end of the season, not after adding 7 players to the squad and just 3 PL games in. Closer to winning a cup? Well, we need luck for that…any club can beat any other club on the day so it’s just a matter of it being your day every game. One season we must get that luck surely??

  10. BIGPAPA

Errrr…Cabella is definitely a winger! And Riviere can play there too, as do Goofy and Sissoko.

  11. TDS It will take the club a million years to break the top 4 with Jabba in-charge. It’s very frustrating for us fan’s.

  12. so we just release a player who was on the bench Sat and is wanted by Roma… for a loan deal 😆 😆 😆

we’ve spent nowt and now we’re giving away substitutes to claw back some wages.

I’m starting to think we should of kept Shola

  13. TDS, cohesion as in playing as a well oiled machine all knowing each other and each others jobs, not behaving well lol.

  14. Our we turning into a cricket team because cricket bores me. I get the joy of watching my team get nailed on a weekly basis while Jabba thinks it’s funny.

  15. This squad as it stands is weak, no back bone and if Colo or Willo get injured it’s Saylor or bust, great just fecking great. Hopeless situation to be in, praying for no injuries now .

Unless a new owner wants to come in and spend huge money and push the FFP rules as far as they can, then the only way of doing it is this way I think…

It needs to be a slow build up, establish us as a solid top half team (attracting better sponsors and better young players) and create a platform to push on. Splashing out even £100M wouldn’t make us one of the top 5 sides and it would just put us into more debt but with very little hope of recouping it (considering the revenue from Europa League is so low).

      (Quote)

  17. Well ,while they spend all night trying to offload Benny I hope he sticks two fingers up to every deal offered, serve em right.

  18. KIM

Aaah. Well, the first half of last season I’d say we did. Then Cabaye left and we didn’t seem to have a plan B. Ridiculous.

But I think we need to give these guys a bit longer considering that we have quite a few new players.

      (Quote)

  19. TDS that’s what I want mate. A billionaire like Chelsea and City have. At least he could sponsor us for a big fee. My dream comes true.

      (Quote)

  20. I don’t get the centre half issue though…it wouldn’t make any sense for MYM to leave without knowing who the replacement is, unless he caused some problems internally and Pardew has no intention of playing him.

      (Quote)

  21. TDS – yes, a League Cup for example, and I’d be delighted – the year we should have won was the Chelsea fa Cup SF defeat, when we really should have won, and would have beaten, was it Milwall in the final? But no, we have to get to finals versus the Champions, each time.

Prem has said it often enough – for NUFC to be top-10 season in and out is, by post-1927 standards, very good, no unprecedented. Any who think that because of the SBR few years, or the large crowds that we should naturally be competing top-5 are dreaming, unless we find that Geordie Sheik or Oligarch.

However, I have believed, based on Ashley going Ape when we haven’t reached top-10, that top-10 was the club’s consistent aim. Not exciting like nights in Milan, but cement that top-10 position and a) Ashley sells up for more money and b) greater odds on a League Cup run sometime.

My concern with the current squad, as we debated the other day, is that I think we need a quicker CB to be realistic top-10 contenders, especially now MYM is gone. I can live without the striker, as, like you, I see some promise in De Jong, Cabella, Riv and Perez. (I’d still have liked another CF). if we don’t get that CB in, then we’ll have to be luckier with form and injuries than we have been for years, just to get top-10, and that, I do think, is not great club management.

Opinions about football players – refreshing?

      (Quote)

  22. TERRY

Fair enough. Personally I don’t like that because it’s fake. I like being a proper club where we can be excited about unearthing new talents rather than just playing fantasy football.

And you can’t really slate Ashley for not blowing hundreds of millions of his own money on NUFC.

It was Villa in the final I believe mate. I think that was the game when monkey mackem Poyet scored 2 and Shearer crossed for Lee to score too. Odd game…

And yes, I think we shaded that game and were unlucky to lose it. I can’t believe that we would have lost to Villa in the final that year. We were stuffed by Arsenal and Man Utd in finals, but they were better teams. We were much better than Villa that year.

I agree on the top 10 thing and I think we should be proud of having a top half PL club. And I also agree that we need that extra centre half. I don’t understand what is happening in that area…but I struggle to believe that we held up Debuchy leaving to get Janmaat yet we’re going to lose MYM and end up with Saylor, Satka, Streete etc. as backup…

Opinions about football players is very refreshing! 🙂

  24. TDS Ashley’s worth 4 billion. Surely he could sponsor us 500 million. Get us a descent manager with a team capable of making the top 4. Like Walker at Blackburn. He would be a hero at toon if he did that.

      (Quote)

  25. TERRY

Yeah, but why should he? That’s just not him. That’s like a new landlord buying the house that you’re renting and then complaining that he doesn’t put in a new kitchen and put in a whirlpool bath.

Some owners buy football clubs to be heroes, others buy it as an investment. In fact, most buy it as an investment.

I’m not going to slate players for not joining us for a lower wage and I’m not going to slate owners for not spending hundreds of millions on us either.

Hearing #nufc “Cheick Tiote set for a medical ahead of a 8.5 switch to Tottenham” 😯

      (Quote)

  27. I’ll slate Ashley if he doesn’t sort out the business side of things, Charnley for not ensuring players are recruited and sponsors sorted, Carr for recommending **** players, Pardew for losing the dressing room, making bad subs, using the wrong tactics or picking the wrong players, and the players for not doing their best in training and on matchday.

That’s all I ask, for people to do their jobs for this club I love. Just as I would. I don’t expect them to do more than that.

      (Quote)

  28. Can’t sell MYM and Tiote on transfer deadline day without replacing them…just can’t happen.

Yep, I’d join in with slamming Ashley if that happens…

    But it hasn’t happened yet…

      (Quote)

  29. Is anyone going to finally accept that NUFC is ran by people with poison in their veins?

This club is built by Ashley to do nothing but stand still. Still no money spent and just recycling the money received. I hope that ****** is going to take his money and run.

Id take relegation and relegation again if it meant getting rid of the cancer that is Mike Ashley.

      (Quote)

  30. Sky Sports News at Tottenham now…not a single mention of Tiote so I reckon that’s complete garbage.

      (Quote)

  31. Is he setting up for a sale. Before Christmas?

Like TDS says, not over yet, but getting late, and we don’t do late inbound business, do we?

      (Quote)

  32. WE WILL NOT SIGN ANYONE. GO HOME FOLKS. ST JAMES IS IN DARKNESS, NOBODY IS THERE TO DO BUSINESS. although… we could sell a couple.. 👿

      (Quote)

  33. TDS that’s fair enough mate. I agree that everyone should do there best at the club. Manager, Player’s, Owner, Fitness staff etc. I would disagree about Ashley investing 500 million in sponsorship because he will get that back in advertising from Sky, BT, Champions league. It also attracts better sponsorship than wonga. I got to much ambition. I don’t want to wait another 50 years to win something, I’ll be 85 years old and I might kick the bucket by then.

      (Quote)

  34. And Mark, no mention of Tiote on that Twitter site…did you make that up? Or get it from 2013?

      (Quote)

  35. I understand the buying players cheap and turning them into better players gaff, but what I don’t get is why we have to always be looking to sell them on for a profit routine.
Why cant we just for a change keep them as a squad for a couple of seasons and build a team to be proud of.
There is enough tv revenue coming in to pay the bills, wages etc. with plenty left over.
we seem to be in a cycle of selling and buying needlessly, all brought about by a total lack of ambition to win anything.
Players want to win SOMETHING during their careers.
    Why not at NUFC ❓

      (Quote)

  36. TERRY

Nah. If investing £500M meant a guarantee of making it back, every billionaire would do it! Chelsea is still in huge debt to their owner and if you want to maintain a CL team, then you have to pay CL level wages and spend a lot each season to keep the squad at that level.

It’s slowly slowly I’m afraid mate…let’s just hope for some thrilling games, a thrilling cup run and hopefully we can see some progress this season!

      (Quote)

  37. BB

Because if they’re that good, then they want to move to a bigger club. Like Fabregas, Modric, Berbatov, Ronaldo etc. all wanted that move too.

      (Quote)

  38. Oh and I don’t know any other NUFC fans that want the Chelsea/city approach.
We should be quite capable of competing with these teams the old fashioned way, given a good enough coach and club ethic.
Unfortunately we have a hopeless coach and a club ethic of making money. Nothing else.

      (Quote)

  39. BB, that is exactly my point earlier, they say they want to keep Pards ( 7 year deal) for stability, yet off load our best players willy nilly.

      (Quote)

  40. I can’t believe we can go into a new season with 3 unknown strikers in the Prem 😯

Why do we always do it. we’ve got/had loads of mediocre wingers. Jonas, Ober, Routledge, Marv, Sammy, Fergy, Goofy… stop the stock buys and buy a really good winger. How much are we spending on wages hiring ****, average players. Same as the forward line. Spend big or struggle 🙄

  41. Alan Pardew reportedly wants Hatem Ben Arfa out of the club today no matter what it takes.

According to talkSport radio, Pardew has told the Frenchman that he is surplus to requirements on Tyneside and as such active efforts are underway to get rid of him before the window shuts tonight.

The news has been confirmed by North East Lee Ryder on Twitter

  46. Yes, I hope Benny digs his heels in now.
If the club (Parsnip) want him gone that badly, then pay up his contract and release him for free. Simples.
Pardew really is a fucking thick **** imho.
I loath the sight and sound of him.

  47. ok
I thought if we released him early from his contract to get rid, he could sign on anywhere.
    I don’t know

  48. Big news lads! We’ve just signed a young striker named Dodgy Plonk from the Netherlands. Plonk will lead us to success!!!

      (Quote)

  49. For HBA it’s a simple decision to make- stay around bide your time and if the manager (please god) gets sacked you might make your way back into the team. If not you talk to other clubs in Jan. What’s to be gained by leaving now?

Pardew really must be gambling all on his relationship with Ashley. He has no other allies right now. His excuses and the performances have so alienated fans that he can’t expect anything but abuse. Meanwhile his mismanagement has left him with a disjointed, leaderless squad.

I know so many discuss Ashley’s strategy and how we can’t hope for much more than this. While I agree to an extent Pardew is a liability even to Ashley’s plan of mid table mediocrity. His tactics leave an isolated striker who should never be asked to lead the line as he is clearly not that sort of player. He runs talent like MYM, HBA, Bigi etc into the ground. And to top it off his teams have no spirit.

Moreover he’s a grinning self satisfied ____. We are in for one long season.

      (Quote)

  50. I think Ashley is quite comfortable sitting 1 point above the relegation zone. What a football mind this man has! Unbelievably clever! We may even move to 2 points above the relegation zone for a brief time.

      (Quote)

  51. Why is nobody else celebrating the acquisition of Dodgy Plonk? This is big news for us mates. Now we have 4 young inexperienced strikers to lead the line! Beautiful.

      (Quote)

  52. at least with Alan insisting on playing one striker we should have a striker fit for the rest of the season..

  54. Some up to the minute comments from wor Alan:
“I don’t understand you scraggy lot. We’re safe in 16th place for the moment. I’m paring the club down to a lean, mean fighting machine. Hatem has to go. He didn’t even like the scarf I just knitted him. All we need in defense is Colo and Willo. That’s obvious. Our strikers will come good some time in this decade. Just let me do my work and we’ll avoid relegation again. I’m sure of it!!!!”

Nothing is a defensive genius. You can’t fail to understand why we will be signing him surely. 😎
