Transfer Wrap – Deadline Day

Well I awoke this morning, quickly made myself a coffee and switched on my tablet and headed straight to the Newsnow link to catch up on all the last minute deals we were working on in the dying hours of the transfer window. I must admit as the page on the tablet was populating, I felt a little trepidation based on our recent performances on deadline day.

Not again!
Not again!

From there it only took but a moment to realise that most of the headlines were centred around the loan departure of Yanga Mbiwa to Roma and a last minute loan deal for Ben Arfa to go to Hull. I then doubled check all the headlines looking for a small glimmer of hope that we had replaced these players but there was none to be found. Even now I am struggling to see the sense of letting these players go without replacing them. I can understand it if they are wanting to clear some space in the squad for new signings but you think the next logical step would be to fill those space with new signings. Both of the players we have let go have not figured prominently in the first team in the second half of last season and the start of this one. But what they do offer is options should we need them. We have now removed any chance of utilising these players and we are probably going to look at some of our younger guys to fill the void. To be honest I am all for giving the younger lads a go but we tried this the season after we finished 5th and look how that played out. We now have a high number of inexperienced premier league players and the board are playing a dangerous game going into this season proper.

Maybe there is some greater master plan that the board has in mind. Come January we will fill the gaps in the squad and the master plan will be complete. It is one hell of a gamble if this is indeed the thought process behind these two players been loaned out. Sure there is a financial benefit but it is hardly break the bank stuff if you ask me. So once again Toon fans have been left wondering “what if” (or what the f*ck) at the end of another transfer window. We have seemingly fallen one or two steps short of doing a really good job once again. Even as I am typing this up, I can barely muster any positive thoughts as I contemplate the aftermath of another deadline day.

What are your thoughts?

  1. I think it’s a great move, which will cost Pardew his job.

Maybe this is the first true sign that Ashley wants out.

      (Quote)

  2. Losing Hatem Ben Arfa will cause uproar at the toon. The bloke was a fans favourite, never to be seen again in a black and white shirt. To being nurtured by Steve Bruce, a geordie boy, will just rub salt into the wounds. We didn’t even make money on the bloke, as his contract runs out next summer. 2 fantastic bits of wealing and dealing by the toon, 15 million worth of “talent” offloaded for a zero return.

      (Quote)

  3. It’s sad as it shows how much influence Pardew retains. Players the club have invested so much time and money into can be effectively given away

      (Quote)

  4. It has long been said that Pardew doesn’t have a say in player transfers but I don’t think it could be said for these two deals. Pardew would have had to of signed off on this and told the club to move them on… Maybe he was promised extra players in return?? Who knows but it has left us short… 😕

      (Quote)

  5. Not sure he’ll be bothered, He wanted the pair gone and sadly like last year with JFK the club have wrongly put faith in the opinion of a buffoon over Graham Carr who must feel like packing it in again

      (Quote)

  6. And Jonas trains alone on the beach in Argentina.

I wonder if HBA has a gagging clause in his loan move.

NUFC is still a toy to Ashley, as for Pardew he is the clown and the board are the jugglers trying to put on a show for us muppets, but we are not as thick as we may look and can see right through it.

It really is getting close to the end of the line for many of us.

      (Quote)

  7. Gone through the whole day shaking my head at the way these guys do business. Count me in the “what the f*ck” category of fan.

      (Quote)

  8. Wow. 😯

    The negativity. 😯

Why so much doom and gloom now? 🙄

Why bother following the toon if your glass is half empty all the time? 🙄

I am positive cos I predicted all this weeks ago and expected nothing different so it’s water off a ducks back and I’m prepared for life in the Championship. You really should get your heads round it. The Championship is a good league. 😉

The happy clappers have turned into the happy slappers, hitting everyone in their anger. 😛

Now here’s a prediction from the predictor. Aussie will have backed a fortune that Ashley would save the day and buy a top striker. 😳

You have to love the President of the Clueless Crew. 😛

  9. Whey the last day of the window went the way it usually does for us….fekn ****.
We haven’t just needed a CB for this window, we’ve needed one(at least) for fekn years, so what do we do? we actually get rid of one ffs!!
Getting rid of Benny whether it was the right or wrong decision is going to unleash the hounds of hell on Pard’s from the terraces unless he starts getting results immediately, he will be given no more time from the fans imo.

Aussie from the last thread, unless the rules have changed (assuming I read and I’m remembering them correctly) you can’t recall players from a season long loan unless it’s because a fee has been agreed with another club to sell them.

      (Quote)

  10. Pardew would just want rid of the players and not want anybody in.?

Which manager in their right mind would want that?

Yes Mike, get rid and please don’t buy anyone. The smaller the squad the better for me Mike. 🙄

    FTSOTB 🙄

The logic of some people makes me howl. 😆

      (Quote)

  11. Sharpy

But I predicted all this so it’s not a surprise. 😉

You were plucking players names out the sky as if they were real targets for us. I scoffed and you kept doing it. For weeks.

Don’t blame me for your naivety 😉

      (Quote)

  12. @Begas

Surely, a football guru and always upbeat person who constantly criticises others for moaning, should be happy and clappy and lifting everyone’s spirits and talking about fresh air and roses and all things nice and sweet. 😆

Leave the reality stuff to me and Stuart. It doesn’t suit you. 😛

      (Quote)

  13. Troy, did you see my post about the day went to the races together on the last thread? 😉

      (Quote)

  14. Richie, thought as much mate… I was just clutching at straws trying to get my head around why we would sell/loan a defender when it is a position we are already weak in.. 😕

      (Quote)

  15. @Begas

You went through a whole day shaking your head. 😯

That must be some record there fella. You must have looked pretty stupid shaking your head whilst walking the dog, eating your food, all day at work. All the time shaking your head. 😛

    Woo hoo hoo hoo 😛

Ice, I’m point scoring for fun here. 😆

      (Quote)

  16. Troy…I’ve been touched by reality for 7 years now, I still have my hope and faith but I also have my expectations, I always “expect” my hopes and faith to come crashing down in flames. That expectation has kept me sane (ish) thru the Ashley years. 😉
Can you see Pard’s surviving if he doesn’t start getting results immediately?

      (Quote)

  17. Aussie

I did see it. I always knew you would blame Pardew.

Pardew doesn’t want players. He wants shot of them. He would have been fizzin if Ashley had overruled him and brought in a top CB and CF.

“Get them out the door Mike”
“The money we are paying them on wages is really annoying me Mike! ”
“And don’t even consider getting anyone else in! ”
“You’ve already bought me too many players!”

    The Predictor. 😉

Has Sharpy started plucking out names for the January window yet? 😳 😛

      (Quote)

  18. @ Richie

I honestly don’t know what Ashley will do with Pards when we end up in a relegation battle. My guess is, he’s Ashley’s perfect foil and will stick with him through thick and thin.

It will all depend on what Pardew has said to Mikey behind closed doors.
He could well have been demanding Mikey buys more players and warned him of the consequences. Mikey might have told him to do his best with the paper thin squad and assured him he would keep his job no matter what. He gambles that we have enough to stay up each season and he might advise Pardew that he has to agree to it or be sacked.

      (Quote)

  19. More like this….
“Mike don’t worry about getting any more players in. With my masterful tactical nous, I will get the best out of the lads we has”
“Are you sure you want to lose Mbiwa, we are already short at back Alan”
“I is world renowned as a defensive specialist Mike, I’ll sort the defence out, don’t you worry. The fans also love my attacking football too!” 😆

      (Quote)

  20. wheyyyyyy, there’ll be massive pressure heaped on Cisse when he comes back. Be good if Chucky ever gets some game time, I still think he’s our best bet from the current crop of fit strikers.
When is Curtis Good due to be fit again?

      (Quote)

  21. I’m surprised that some people are surprised, this is the way Ashley works and has done from day 1..few injuries and we are in big trouble, letting my m go without getting in a replacement is criminal.

      (Quote)

  22. Troy…I just think with the “Benny thing” and the lack of CB (especially letting 1 go) and not getting a “proven” striker that the fans will turn big time on Pard’s whether it’s his fault or not. It may not even take Ashley to sack him, you know how venomous the atmosphere at St James’ can get and a person can only take so much before they snap and Pard’s may quit himself. Of course if he turns result around quickly then all would be forgotten.

      (Quote)

  23. Don’t ‘be a *****. Noone is saying he didn’t want top players to come in but he wanted both of them out and had been trying to get rid all summer.

He would have gone along with it regardless of replacements certainly in Ben Arfas case.

      (Quote)

  24. Um, so what happens if we get an injury at the back? It just seems like they have managed to get 2 high earners off the payroll and not strengthened were we needed to.

      (Quote)

  25. Cant fault Troy’s logic here to be honest. But, yes we knew it would end like this as this is Ashley’s NUFC. However I honestly do believe Pardew was desperate to get HBA out the door, which is just a battle of ego’s to be fair.

Were short of creativity and goals so lets let one of our better attacking players leave for one of our rivals and we have a pathetic defence so we will let one of our centre halves leave to play CL football. Could you make this stuff up? Well Troy and I did as good as.

    Just sad!

      (Quote)

  26. @Aussie.

Pardew obviously sanctioned these deals as well as keeping hold of Abeid. (which he happily admitted) he’s not just a coach, he’s part of the problem

      (Quote)

  27. lol a couple of seasons ago, Mike apparently told Pardew, Get a centerhalf in!! now we’re weaker then we were then considering their age / injuries…

      (Quote)

  28. Many of us predicted that we wouldn’t sign anyone else! And many of us said that HBA would leave.

I’m disappointed that we didn’t replace MYM with a top centre half and didn’t sign a real number 9 striker but had we been offered this window at the beginning, we’d have taken it. And people wonder why FFS always did his deals late…he was slated for not giving them a chance to do pre-season with us but the fans loved it…

We have several players to come into the squad and I can only hope that SDJ, Rivière, Cisse or Ferreyra start banging in some goals soon.

Most interested to see who takes MYM’s place in the squad. Is Streete or Satka good enough? Was Pardew happy for that or was he demanding a replacement which just wasn’t delivered.

Not bothered about HBA. Loads of talent but no application. It’s a team game and he didn’t fit in. From rumours, he had arguments with other players so why would anyone want him there?

      (Quote)

  29. Gimme a break. If HBA was all that, then the likes of Liverpool, Everton or Spurs would have taken a punt on him.

      (Quote)

  30. TDS – I don’t think anyone is too bothered that two players left but its the fact that the manager said anyone leaving would be replaced when we all knew that was bull ****.

My view now is I hope we get relegated as I truly believe thats the only way this football club will move forward. I will no longer go to the majority of the games and will be willing us to lose every game (apart from Mackems) as when we get relegated Ashley will be gone like a shot this time and we can move forward.

What a sad indictment of this regime that they make supporters feel this way.

      (Quote)

  31. @TDS

we arent in the same class as Spurs, L’pool or Everton. we should be but our rivals are the likes of Hull.

Its not a tragedy…yet. lets see by xmas how he does there and whether we could of done with him here.

      (Quote)

  32. STUART

Then I’d say you are seriously deluded. There have been a lot worse times at our club and if fans had deserted us when we were languishing in the old second division before SJH and KK, then we wouldn’t be the club we are today.

Fans have the right to slate the club’s decisions and to ask that certain things are changed, but I think it’s frankly disgusting that so called fans would want us to lose and to get relegated in the misguided hope that it creates some change at the club. I have no idea why you think Ashley would just let the club go on the cheap if we were relegated…he didn’t last time.

Try getting behind the team, things have been a lot worse at NUFC.

      (Quote)

  33. Relegation 😯 f*** that. Pardew would be the perfect bloke to get us back up 😆

Pressure will get rid of Pardew and his bullshit, **** tactics, **** man-management, **** everything..

      (Quote)

  34. so now the the senior conductor of the reality train wants us relegated!!

Wow Troy get a grip of your crew!! 😛

      (Quote)

  35. MARK

He might do really well for a while but look at his history. He’s had issues in every squad he’s been in.

We need to have players with the potential of playing for the likes of Liverpool. Ok, they’ll eventually leave but hopefully for big money and we can reinvest. Spurs did exactly this but they’re years ahead of us.

      (Quote)

  36. Why is everyone so negative. ? 🙄

I thought you’s were the happy clappy brigade and criticised others for being negative. 🙄

    So hypocritical. 🙄

      (Quote)

  37. I can honestly say, hand on heart, I saw all this heartache coming.

I’m just so pleased I saw it months ago. The difference is, I look at history and not hope. 😉

Sharpy and his gang will be drafting up a wish list for next January now. 😆

I can’t wait to see it tomorrow. 😛

      (Quote)

  38. Not surprised at all we haven’t signed anyone else.

What I am surprised at is that we have let a good defender go for nothing and are still paying 80% of his wages when we are short of defenders?

    Its insane.

Ben Arfa we won’t really miss because Pardew was never going to play him anyway.

Having said that, our squad barring injuries in the defense should be more than capable of beating the likes of Crystal Palace, and other lower midtable teams at St James.

I don’t think we will though because Pardew is utterly clueless. So here we go with other **** season.

      (Quote)

  39. TROY yes I see you point scoring, normal for you, just not my way,but note I have said from day one (about 7yrs) that it was the end for football loving fans when jabba bought the club its all about profit for him and as long as we hang on to PL he’s happy but I was told I was a negger and jabba has saved us from a fate worse than death(but won’t point score on that) it was big Dave that agreed with me,I also said from day one that Pardew was **** and should not be at our club,a lot said oh but he got us to 5th in lge so don’t rubbish him,he was a lucky tw-t it was the worst PL season ever for a lot of clubs,it won’t happen again, once again I will say there is nothing for us while jabba has the club apart from heartbreak

      (Quote)

  40. JJ

No credible source I’ve seen to say we’re paying 80% of his wages. More likely it’s made up by a bitter member of the media to stir up highly strung Toon fans…sadly, easy to do…

      (Quote)

  41. well done Troy, your greatness should have its own link. 😛

Now lets be happy and sing along with Troy and his favorite song..

I am the one and only,
    Oh yeah!
Call me, call me by my name or call me by my number,
    You put me through it,
I’ll still be doing it the way I do it,
And yet, you try to make me forget,
Who I really am, don’t tell me, I know best,
I’m not the same as all the rest,

    Chorus:

I am the one and only,
    Nobody I’d rather be,
I am the one and only,
You can’t take that away from me
I’ve been a player in the crowd scene,
A flicker on the big screen,
My soul embraces, one more in a million faces,
High hopes and aspirations, ideas above my station
maybe but all this time I’ve tried to walk with dignity and pride

    Chorus

I can’t wear this uniform without some compromises,
Because you’ll find out that we come,
    In different shapes and sizes,
No one can be myself like I can,
For this job I’m the best man,
And while this may be true, you are the one and only you!

      (Quote)

  42. DEB

Krul, Santon, Janmaat, Sissoko, Tiote, Colback, SDJ, Rivière and Cabella from our first team. I’d add Haidara, Arma and Aarons from our others.

      (Quote)

  43. The only way this club can move forward is when Ashley leaves. Two things will make this happen; 1) Supporters stop going to games and let his poxy company advertise in empty stadium and 2) Relegation. Ashley does not have the inclination nor could he be arsed to go trough all that again. The club in the Championship would be a disaster for him and SD.

We need him out – whichever way, he needs to go.

      (Quote)

  44. I fail to see how anybody who calls themselves a fan can hope for relegation. It’s these good-times fans who desert a team when they go down and come back with hands on hearts when there’s an upswing. No time for that sort of person.

As for the window, well, as baffling as the Y-M deal is and the lack of an incoming defender, I don’t think there’s any reason at this stage to go all hysterical and start thinking that the sky has fallen.

The more balanced among us will still support the team, no matter who is in it (or isn’t), no matter who the manager is, no matter who owns it, and we’ll still continue to make assessments based on what we see on the park, not making “predictions” based on paranoia and egoism.

    Howay the lads.

      (Quote)

  45. Bloody hell, why would anyone call for us to get relegated! 😯 Do you know for a concrete fact that Ashley will sell up if we do? 😯 A ridiculous statement… that is as narrow minded as it short sighted… 😕

      (Quote)

  46. BRISVEGAS

Well said mate. Perfect in fact.

I think that’s one weird thing about Newcastle…in other cities, the fair weather fans are more inclined to support Man Utd or Chelski, but in Newcastle, it’s frowned upon and most of the football fans support NUFC.

So now some of them are stuck with NUFC by virtue of where they were born. I don’t think being a NUFC supporter is always in the blood…

      (Quote)

  47. I went to every home game in the Championship and I continue to go now.

Some people are so short sighted its no wonder they spout rubbish. The same people who follow like sheep even when the club is getting shafted every step of the way. Action is needed and IF relegation is required for us to rid this evil from the club and the city – so be it. It will be worth the pain.

      (Quote)

  48. that’s the reality crew for you. they all come out to play when things are going bad to tell us all how great they are in predicting our doom 😆

and now they want us relegated 😯

    that’s clueless for you 😛

      (Quote)

  49. Stuart, has Ashley stated he will sell up if we are relegated?
Nobody follows like sheep as you allude to, most have put their pitch forks away and stopped burning witches some generations back, However you seem to cling to the notion that you have to hurt Ashley financially to get him to leave. A financial beast like Ashley will scoff at such actions and more than likely fuk the club even harder as punishment. But by all means keep fighting the war Rambo! 😉

      (Quote)

  50. TDS – I can only see 2 players in that list that someone like Liverpool would be interested in. Rose tinted mate.

      (Quote)

  51. AMF with comings and goings at the club we are about two mil in front, now can you tell me have we saved the interest from Carroll sale to spend in Jan 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  52. Just to clear up;

I don’t want us relegated. I’ve never said that. I’ve just said I’m prepared for it. I’m just surprised others believe we will be in the top 10 cos according to them goals will flow from midfield, we have a stronger squad than last year, Remys goals will be covered. 🙄

Why is everyone bothered? Most have said we will be in the top before yesterday? Where’s the problem? 😛

You aren’t starting to agree with me are you? We might be in a relegation battle this season? 🙄

      (Quote)

  53. Still don’t agree with those wishing losses and relegation on us. Never have and never will, it’s bizarre. If you could guarantee a new owner who would buy us the league, the vanishing of the debt, the influx of a new generation of geordies who will take the champions league by storm, sure I might contemplate it then, but it’s all just speculation.

      (Quote)

  54. GEORGIO

Specifically the point was regarding players that Liverpool might be interested in in future. Frankly, if they were good enough to be CL players now, then they would probably have been sold too…I don’t think there are many players in clubs outside the top 7 who you think are CL level.

All of those players I listed I think have the potential to improve in the PL and then interest a CL club. I think that’s why they were signed essentially.

      (Quote)

  55. Ice 😆 mate, I think you are onto the master plan the club have developed! 😆 I forgot all about the Carroll interest money when writing the article! 😉

      (Quote)

  56. Troy – the players that I put forward were all realistic targets. Everyone on here, including you said we needed a CB and CF adding to what we had. All I did was offer some names to get people’s thoughts – isn’t that the purpose of the blog?.

I’m disappointed that we didn’t get the CF in, but acknowledge that the club did try with 4 different targets – they just wouldn’t spend the money – which is annoying.
But what pissed my off yesterday is that they have also let 2 first squad players go on loan without replacing them. That is BS IMO.

You call me naive, fine. As I said to you weeks ago, i really don’t care what your opinion of me is. But I will also hope that the club will strengthen the squad in every transfer window – and will
Always be disappointed if they don’t.

      (Quote)

  57. AMF well you can save it for a thread in Jan mate,it will Troy time to work out where we are going by then in case he’s not sure 😀

      (Quote)

  58. Quote Troy Stavers @ 66 “I … want us relegated. I’ve … said that.”

    Unbelievable! Just unbelievable!

      (Quote)

  59. Relegation battle…what rot. If that’s even looking a possibility come November then Pardew will be on his bike.

One minute people are slagging off Ashley because he just wants to stay in the PL, next it’s because he just wants to settle for that 8th to 10th range and now people are thinking that a billionaire businessman is so dumb that he’s going to risk a major asset by flirting with relegation??

Crazy. People seriously think that our squad is worse that Leicester, Burnley and West Brom for example?

      (Quote)

  60. Sharpy – you have banged on about SDJ for 2 years now. I’ve never seen such a poor debut as his on Sat, even worse than his brother. Pardew said he’s not match fit, so why play him? There’s got to be a good reason why Ajax let him go for £3.75m and nobody else was interested. I’ve seen a 45 year old Beardsley looking fitter, faster and more sprightly than that.
    Well . . . ?

      (Quote)

  61. TDS – more rose tinted I’m afraid. Which bit of our current relegation form don’t you understand? What is it now – 5 wins in 25 or so, leaking goals for fun, no decent strikers or CBs. Pardew won’t last til November.
    Leicester will be a surprise.
