Transfer Wrap – Deadline Day

Well I awoke this morning, quickly made myself a coffee and switched on my tablet and headed straight to the Newsnow link to catch up on all the last minute deals we were working on in the dying hours of the transfer window. I must admit as the page on the tablet was populating, I felt a little trepidation based on our recent performances on deadline day.

Not again!
Not again!

From there it only took but a moment to realise that most of the headlines were centred around the loan departure of Yanga Mbiwa to Roma and a last minute loan deal for Ben Arfa to go to Hull. I then doubled check all the headlines looking for a small glimmer of hope that we had replaced these players but there was none to be found. Even now I am struggling to see the sense of letting these players go without replacing them. I can understand it if they are wanting to clear some space in the squad for new signings but you think the next logical step would be to fill those space with new signings. Both of the players we have let go have not figured prominently in the first team in the second half of last season and the start of this one. But what they do offer is options should we need them. We have now removed any chance of utilising these players and we are probably going to look at some of our younger guys to fill the void. To be honest I am all for giving the younger lads a go but we tried this the season after we finished 5th and look how that played out. We now have a high number of inexperienced premier league players and the board are playing a dangerous game going into this season proper.

Maybe there is some greater master plan that the board has in mind. Come January we will fill the gaps in the squad and the master plan will be complete. It is one hell of a gamble if this is indeed the thought process behind these two players been loaned out. Sure there is a financial benefit but it is hardly break the bank stuff if you ask me. So once again Toon fans have been left wondering “what if” (or what the f*ck) at the end of another transfer window. We have seemingly fallen one or two steps short of doing a really good job once again. Even as I am typing this up, I can barely muster any positive thoughts as I contemplate the aftermath of another deadline day.

What are your thoughts?

  1. When it suits, SDJ will have cost £3.75M but if he doesn’t work out, people will be saying that we was a waste of £6M…

  3. TDS – If were near the bottom in Nov he won’t be sacked. Ashley has an aversion of spending money that hasn’t been funded by players sales. All that money has gone so he wouldn’t pay Pardew off. He also knows that no other manager would accept the restrictions he puts on his managers and no other would talk the bollocks he does for Ashley. Pardew is perfect for Ashley and he knows it. We have won only 4 games in 2014 and have collected 18 points in that period. That’s relegation form and he’s still not been sacked. Any other manager would be gone so it’s not going to happen.

Come come my little Begas. You should not misquote me.

That’s naughty. All my posts have had he same theme. I expect a relegation battle. I expect there could possibly be a relegation on the cards.

I certainly don’t want it. But you shouldn’t concern yourself with that. You think we are stronger than last season. 😛

We should be top 10 then. Oh dear. 🙄

You mean Ashley has an aversion to spending money that the club doesn’t actually have? When you consider how much we spend on players, can you tell me why you totally discount loan fees, wages, signing on fees, agent fees etc? Are they all free?

Pardew was seriously hamstrung when Cabaye was sold against his wishes in Jan and not replaced. That was incredibly stupid. I care about this season now and seeing how the new players will do.

And of course Pardew can be sacked. There’s no way Ashley will risk relegation!

Please don’t take it to heart. I don’t know you personally. 😉

That goes to everyone in the Clueless Crew. Remember, these are only my honest opinions of you all. You may be smashing little humans in reality. I could look beyond your ridiculous opinions if I met you.

I mean. You can’t be that Clueless about everything. I’ve heard you’s on, talking about TV deals, shopping, ironing, buttered scones. The nighty night club involves an array of subjects other than football. 😯

  7. Boy o boy is Troy going to look a dill pickle if we dont get relegated! I am sure he will sqirm his way out of it with a myriad of bullshit excuses if we don’t! 😛

  8. “I fail to see how anybody who calls themselves a fan can hope for relegation. It’s these good-times fans who desert a team when they go down and come back with hands on hearts when there’s an upswing. No time for that sort of person.”

    As usual I disagree.

I think many of the fans who see Ashley selling if relegation occurred wouldn’t enjoy seeing their club in the lower league, but would take the sacrifice if it meant long term benefit.

They would still continue to support the team in the lower league, in fact more so than under an Ashley regime in the Premiership, so how that is being a “good-times” supporter I’m not too sure.

We simply want to support a football club, not a giant advertising hoarding for a billionaire.

  9. Aussie,
We won’t get relegated. Ashley won’t allow it.

He wants mid table mediocrity and for that we have the perfect squad.

The only reason we may end up near the relegation zone is because of an inadequate manager who makes our side look poor against the likes of Crystal Palace.

  12. Why on earth do some people think:
1 – if we get relegated Ashley will sell?
2 – if we get a new owner, he will be any better?
3 – if we get a new owner in the championship that things will be as good as now even after 5 years?

All that happens if we get relegated is we lose top players, we lose sponsors, we lose top youngsters and we lose lots of money. All contributes to setting us back several years to get back where we want to be. You’re totally off your rocker if you think that’s a good thing.

  13. BRISVEGAS @88

That’s it…right there…some fans seem to be complaining because our club isn’t currently delivering them with what they want from a football club.

I actually CHOSE to support NUFC, not being from Newcastle. I chose to support this club because of the fantastic passion from the fans and because it means being part of a fantastic group supporting a fantastic club. Sticking together when things are bad, or just average, will make things even better when we have a good period!

I hear fans of top clubs whinging because they didn’t win the PL or didn’t sign a £50M player. It’s sad that we seem to have fans like that too…

  14. TDS
The crucial and important bit of your comment is “to get back where we want to be”. You could ask 50 people on here and get a different answer. I have never seen Newcastle win a domestic trophy and at 55 have accepted that in my life time I never will.
In the years of supporting the Toon a good few have been in the second tier and it wasn’t that bad. I woke up the next morning, had my family and friends around me

  17. TOBY

Very well said. I think you get what it is to be a Toon supporter.

There’s no reason we can’t win a trophy though. Much smaller clubs have won one since 1969 and it’s just the matter of getting the luck of the draw really. Any club can beat any other club on their day so we just need it to be our day for the cup games!

I think some of the disgruntled fans are missing the real point though. The thing that I think is the biggest shame is that there’s no real spokesman at the club who gets the fans. We’ve had the likes of SJH, KK, FFS and SBR. Even Roeder and Hughton seemed to get on well with the fans and we also had players like Shearer and Lee too.

Now we have literally nobody in that role…

  18. TERRY

You’re totally entitled to that wish of course, but please keep in mind that there are many of us who don’t want that. I’d rather cherish some success knowing that we earned it the proper way by quality scouting unearthing some gems, youth players cracking into the first team, astute management and the Toon fans roaring our team onto some success.

I know all of that isn’t perfect now, but it never will be. But hopefully one day it will click and we’ll have another glory period.

  19. I would have liked another striker and CB in but am a little confused over the meltdown on Ben Arfa and Mbiwa

Ben Arfa didn’t even have a squad number and wasn’t going to be In the 25 man squad. Mbiwa has hardly played for us so not sure people have seen enough of him to think he’s so good. As for CB depth, maybe the club rates Streete and Satka more than him or maybe Lascalles has an injury recall provision

  20. Come come Aussie

You must keep up. Stuart has a go at you about that all the time.

I said we will be in a relegation battle. I have said that Ashley will be forced to spend our cash in January to save us from relegation.

I’m happy to stick by that as long as you stick by your prediction that we will be top 10. 😉

  21. TDS – You ask me if wages, signing on fees and loan fees are free? No, wages are well covered by the income of the club exc player trading. I would bet the wage bill hasn’t increased in the last 18 months. Even now, everyone forgets that we have brought in fewer players than we let go and that I imagine has cancelled out any increase in wages.

But also please don’t try and tell me that our costs as a club have gone up by more than £30m per year since the new TV deal started.

Since we signed the biggest kit sponsorship deal in our history and got the new TV deal all our new players have been funded by selling players. Our costs just have not gone up in line with the increase in our income so you are talking complete and utter rubbish. In fact the fact you don’t understand makes this conversation completely futile.

Why are people who don’t understand accounts constantly going on about the money at our club? If you want to do this, go through the accounts in detail, learn the details of how transfers are conducted from a financial perspective and then come back to share your wisdom with us. But your amateur financial observations are frankly embarrassing…

On the football side of things…who have we lost of any significance since the START of 2013/14 season?

    Cabaye (replacement – SDJ)
    Remy (replacement – Riviere)
    Debuchy (replacement – Janmaat)

Ok…that’s it. I’m not saying our replacements are instantly going to be as good as the outgoing players, but seeing as all 3 went to top CL clubs, we can’t expect that.

Then you look at fringe players that have been replaced by supposedly better players:

    Shola (replacement – Perez)
    Gosling (replacement – Colback)
    HBA (replacement – Cabella)

Then you add Ferreyra to the squad too (we didn’t sign LDJ until Jan if you remember and he contributed virtually nothing).

Who else did we lose? Oh…Tav? Marv? Fatlatino? Not relevant. And replaced in the squad by the likes of Raylor, Aarons and Armstrong.

MYM is an odd one…but if he’d fallen behind the likes of Streete and/or Satka, then it made sense to get rid of him, especially as we can only register 25 players. Same thing applies to HBA.

Please, don’t ignore this post and come back to me with garbage about “the Carroll money” or “the Cabaye money”. I’ve lined out some genuine points here regarding players that have gone and players that have come in. Do you agree with what I’ve lined out?

I drove alone in my Vauxhall Corsa from Newcastle to Cardiff and stayed overnight only to see us get stuffed by Man Utd. Please don’t tell me that Geordies hurt more after that defeat.

Sure, it’s different if you actually live in Newcastle. The buzz after a good win was fantastic and I can imagine it being a bit miserable at the moment after the disappointing start this season. But that’s got nothing to do with being a Geordie.

And it could easily turn around…we still have the same number of points as Man Utd I believe…

I’m not really bothered about the wage bill though mate. If I want to find out that I can check the accounts when they come out a year or so later. Otherwise it’s just speculating.

It’s also disingenuous to list both LDJ and Cabaye in the same place when people are talking about outgoings. They didn’t play for NUFC at the same time so we never paid wages for both of them.

And if someone gets pedantic and says there was a day crossover, I’ll find them and paint their car with red and white stripes… 😉

      (Quote)

  32. TDS – I absolutely disagree with you on the above. Cabaye is a French international and his replacement can’t get in a pretty poor Dutch side. I’m not saying SDJ isn’t a good player, I think he is, I just think he’s as good as Cabaye. Rivière hasn’t played for France, Remy has and their records are polar opposites and Cabella for HBA, well I’m sorry but he has a lot to do to be a better player than HBA. HBA is a really good player, he has just not been used correctly. Disgracefully really.

    I’ll try and make this as simple as I can so you understand;

Remy scored 14 league goals for us last season and got a few assists and Cabaye got 6 with about 10 assists and he was only here for half a season. There is just no way on earth that Rivière and SDJ will reach that level. Someone did once say that we should make up them goals by spreading around the team a bit. It’s hard to do that as they can’t all play and to score as many goals as they’ll need to they will all have to play an awful lot of games and there aren’t enough games in the season.

You also go on about other experienced players who left and have been replaced with young players might be the next Messi or Ronaldo, but are just as likely to be the next Adam Campbell. Big risk!

For the money, any accounts is pretty simple; income offset by expenditure. Now I know amortisation ect… Is used but it’s quite normal in football club accounts. It doesn’t really account for income (real money into the club) rising and expenditure (wages ect…) staying static. Take away player trading and NUFC will have made tens of millions of pounds profit! Can’t hide from that! You will probably argue cash flow is the issue, well I’m sorry but if Ashley insists on paying every club up front for players but is happy to give any buying club credit then that’s his problem.

  33. I can’t see how relegation will help us. It will just make us poorer than we already are. Like it or not, we are now in amongst a group of clubs like Stoke, Swansea and Hull. 34. This is what Geordies are really pissed off about:

    Our entire record in 2014: P 22; Won 5;Drawn 3; Lost 14.
    Our home record in 2014: P: 11; Won 3; Drawn 2; Lost 6.
In 2014 we have failed to score in a higher proportion of our games than anyone in the entire football league, with just over 66% Hartlepool are second in that table.
In 2014 we have failed to score in 14 of the 22 matches, conceded 3 or more goals in 8 of 22 matches, and scored more than once in only 4 of 22 games.
    Under Alan Pardew (all time):
Newcastle’s premier league opponents have scored first in 58 matches, and in those games Newcastle have come from behind to win only 4 times, drawn 9 times, and lost 45.
We have NEVER won a game when behind at half-time.
We have lost 17 home matches in the last two seasons, the worst record since ’58-’59.
We have scored fewer set piece goals than any other PL team in the past 3 seasons.
We have lost by 3 or more goals over twenty times.

      (Quote)

  35. TDS
Pardew wanted Benny and Mbiwa out of the club at any cost.
Not only do I think we will be paying part of Mbiwas’ wages, I would hazard a guess that we did not get a loan fee for either player.
Anyway, do I get a bonus point from the pre season predictions for saying Benny would be given away for free and are you keeping count of the number of times the Carroll money is being mentioned cos I’d like a bonus point for that as well. 😀

  37. STUART

Fair play for at least trying to address my points…

But…I didn’t say that we had replaced them with the same standard. That’s just unrealistic! Cabaye left because he’s a player at his peak who wants to play CL football. Every player of his level wants to play CL football if they can, so why would they come to us? If we pay double the wages? Well, that won’t happen and that’s what got us into financial mess in the first place. Cabaye is a squad player for PSG and Arsenal wouldn’t pay more than about £11M for him either I believe…

Riviere is a bit of a wildcard and I agree he doesn’t look as good as Remy. Again…same point as above. But we have more goal threats now than last season so hopefully we’ll have 3 or 4 scoring 10+ rather than relying on Cisse/Ba/Remy like in previous seasons.

Cabella for HBA…did you read my previous post? Irrelevant. HBA barely played last season. And HBA wasn’t even worth a punt from the likes of Liverpool or Everton. He went to bloody Hull…says a lot about how highly clubs rate him.

I’ll try to make this simple so you will understand too…

Cabaye scored 7 goals and actually only got 3 assists…it’s far too early to predict what Riviere and SDJ will do, but as I said, I expect goals and assists to be more shared around the squad. Last year we only really had Cabaye and Remy providing goal threat. Now we have quite a few, they just need to learn to play with each other. Hopefully quickly! It’s not about them all playing, it’s about the opposition knowing that they have several players to worry about rather than just worrying about Remy in the box and Cabaye outside of it.

Simple question…who has left the club since the beginning of last season that you would happily have back? Players that are a loss to our club. Cabaye, Remy and Debuchy for sure. Not one other player for me, not one.

On the money side…the accounts show the profit, it’s as simple as that. There will be some years that we make a profit because it would be stupid to plan to break even every year! You don’t sign a player for £10M because you have £10M, you sign a player for £10M because you need him and it’s a good deal.

So if we’ve got a bit of money left (which I believe we do), then rather than rush a buy, maybe we can get someone in Jan who will do what Cisse did for us.

  40. TDS – We’ll see, but I think you’ll find I’ll be correct once again and we will be amongst the lowest scorers and worst defence in the PL. Not a good combo.

Regards the profit of the club. Our income has gone up by £30m a year at least over the past two years and our expenditure hasn’t gone up in line with that, in fact I doubt it’s gone up at all, yet we have only spent money on buying players with the money we receive from selling players. So there is a rather large deficit. Why? What do we gain from having that deficit, if we aren’t prepared to spend it?

      (Quote)

  41. Georgio – well what?! – you’ve already said that Pardew played him when he was unfit – is that my fault?.
When have you got this £3 mil figure from?!. I’ve seen £6-7.5m but never that little.
I believe when fully fit he will be an excellent buy – but even Messi looks gash when he’s not fit.

      (Quote)

  42. STUART

Ok. I can correct you on that one. Our income went up by around £30M at the end of the season just gone. Some clubs (e.g. Saints & Norwich) spent that money last summer BEFORE they had even received it. I reckon if you include various fees, then we’ll have spent more than we received, but I still think we had enough left to sign another first team player. Like I say, if you don’t get the player you want, it’s better to keep your money in the bank than blow it on a player who is no better than what you have.

You’re welcome to your prediction of course, I just don’t understand why you appear to have no excitement at all about some of our new players. Isn’t there something in you who has this desire for Cabella to be the new Ginola, Riviere to be the new Asprilla or SDJ to play like Teddy Sheringham?

  43. Soton, Swansea, QPR improved their squad Big Time. But I think that if the plan is to bring Satka/Good/Streete as 4th choice, I cant complain. Ive watched Good play, is ball playing is very decent, and he can do a job on set piece, hope he’ll get a chance as I see a long term Coloccini replacement in him. We need to trust Abeid, Aarons, Santon when back, Raylor, Ferreyra and Cissé who are both better than Riviere for me. think about drop Gouffran, or even Sissoko, Id rather see Sameobi and Ayoze given a run on the wings, Cabella and Aarons being 2 obvious choices in the starting line up. If Bigi could take Anita’s spot too, that wont be a bad move.

Some may think Pocchetino is foundor of that team, but that team for me, was build by Nigel Adkins, a very decent English Manager, that Id take if AP sacked, as Tony Pulis. 55. LST- Agree with you on Mbiwa, dont want to dismiss him, but he’s been a bit overhyped, and never solution to our problems, shoud invest big on a Shawcross type of CB long time ago!

I don’t think most Saints fans would agree that they have strengthened. Lost lots of key performers in the PL for unknown quantities…could be ok for them or they could struggle to adapt to those changes.

Totally disagree on QPR. They did similar last time and it didn’t work for them.

Caulker and Fer were relegated last season, Sandro is surplus to requirements at Spurs, other players are new to this league (and I bet they haven’t been scouted for as long as our recruits).

Austin is in his first season in the PL, Phillips is unproven too, Hoilett flopped last time, Zamora is past it (never really had it) and Taarabt has failed in the PL several times too.

They’re a bottom half PL club for me and possible struggling against relegation.

  58. It’s a matter of opinion, TDS, and my opinions are always closer to the reality than anyone who has something positive to say about this club under this regime. Since we have finished 5th we have never once improved the team. I suppose that’s obvious though as we have finished about 16th and 10th since.

Did you really seriously just say that? Your opinions are closer to reality than mine just because I happen to disagree with you? Wow…

Well if you’re so **** arrogant to insist that your OPINIONS are more valid than mine, then I won’t bother trying to talk to you about my obviously inferior OPINIONS…

  60. So Aussie. You are in agreement with me then? A relegation battle it is?

Come come Aussie. Tell me what you predict. 😉
